mass dampers arent about the track being bumpy, its about going over the curbs, so itll make a decent effect no matter what the track. As long as they are [DD]crashing over the curbs[/DD] then mass dampers will help.

Agreed Ferg.
It's going to get even worse next year with Vodafone going to McLaren. We'll have Ferrari, Honda, Super Aguri, Toyota and McLaren all with mostly red cars. If Lost Boys buys Midland it will mostly oragne so that will make it even harder. I think F1 racing did some type of study about it at the beginning of the season.

Here's a useless piece of information...
Fernando Alonso has used the same R26 chassis, #03, at every Grand Prix this season.
Michael Schumacher has used two chassis this season, #253 which he wrote off in Australia, and #254, which he's used for every race since then.
Jenson Button used chassis #04 for the first eight races, then #05 for the last five.

They didn't use it at every track, and didn't use it last race so I don't think it will be such a big deal. Sure it helped, and they were hit hard in Germany because they were running it and didn't know what to do without it, but they're fine now.

I think you're rushing the "fine" comment a bit Stu. Renault were crap in Germany and Hungary was hardly a race that allowed them to show their true speed.
Turkey is a bumpy circuit, maybe even more so than last year now that the track has settled. It'll be very interesting to see how competative the R26 is without the mass damper there...something the car was desinged around afterall.

i think they are going to be slower going through that 4-apex over the curbs at that speed. and considering how thats a fast long corner, that should be a good bit of time added to their lap.

Just saw a weather forecast for lotsa sun all weekend... blazing hot (high 90's) on Sunday. Since it's a tire war, this presents another opportunity for a lop-sided race if a tire company gets it wrong (again). Let's hope not!
Can't wait to see Kubica in the dry for a full race weekend... That kid really knocked my socks off in Hungary. It may become easy for one to argue that BMW were smart to dump ol' JV.

On the mass damper systems

whats this mass damper business all about?
In the nose cones of the cars, they have mounted ~20lbs of ballast weight on a spring. It is a dual suspended chasis in concept.
Autosport.com had a nice article describing these systems...
Jonathan Noble, Autosport.com, July 20, 2006
...Mass dampers are simple mechanical devices that comprise of a weight, believed to be around 9kg, mounted {on} a spring. They improve a car's performance by dampening out tyre bouncing frequencies throughout corners and therefore keeping grip levels more consistent...
Autosport's technical consultant Gary Anderson told the magazine earlier this year: "You see a car bouncing, such as when it hits a kerb. This will be around 8-9Hz (hertz, unit of frequency equal to one cycle per second) on the tyres.
"This device will get an equal frequency going in the opposite direction. It's a bit like a tall building designed to withstand an earthquake where they put the water tank on the roof - so that when the building sways, the water is going in the opposite direction at the same frequency."
...Renault were believed to be the first to use the device, although they have never officially confirmed that they were running with it. Red Bull Racing, Ferrari and most recently McLaren have subsequently developed their own systems.
...Michelin's rubber has a more compliant structure than the Bridgestone, meaning there is more benefit to be gained from damping out tyre bouncing than there is in the Japanese rubber.
Great question! Hope that helps!

Sure they had a lot of problems at Germany but that was because the mass damper was suddenly removed. They had run all of their testing and simulations with the mass damper. In Hungry they were no where near as bad as before. In P1 and P2 they were running competative times.

Who let that guy Vettel in here?
Vettel tops times in practice 2 - Turkey
By Timothy Collings Friday, August 25th 2006, 12:03 GMT
German new boy Sebastian Vettel topped the times with a stunning debut performance for the BMW Sauber team on Friday in the second free practice session for Sunday's Turkish Grand Prix.
The 19-year-old made a sensational start to his Formula One career by setting the fastest time of the day at the challenging Istanbul Park circuit. BMW Sauber's new third driver clocked 1:28.091, which was 0.073s faster than Felipe Massa's Ferrari.
Jenson Button was third for Honda carrying over his pace from this morning's opening practice hour.
His lap of 1:28.506 was just under half a second off Vettel's quickest lap of the session. He finished marginally ahead of his colleague Anthony Davidson, who had a new engine fitted to his Honda in between sessions.
Right at the end of the hour there was a clash between world championship leader Fernando Alonso and Red Bull Racing third driver Robert Doornbos. The pair were running side-by-side heading into Turn 12.
Alonso was late on the brakes and slid into the Dutchman. Slight contact was made and both were able to continue to the pits.
In total there were more than 20 off-track incidents and spins in an action-packed session at the hot Istanbul Park track. The combination of the hot weather, where track temperatures peaked at 51 degrees Celsius, and slippery surface meant a lot of drivers made mistakes.
One driver to succumb was Jarno Trulli, who spun his Toyota at the second from last corner, but he was able to loop it round to continue.
Most drivers fell foul of Turn Nine however, a tricky left-hander at the end of the back straight. On one lap Michael Schumacher missed the apex of the corner and was stripped of his lap for the indiscretion.
Super Aguri's Franck Montagny went off there four times, while 14 other drivers also went wide and spun at the corner.
Pos Driver Team Time Laps
1. Vettel BMW-Sauber (M) 1:28.091 29
2. Massa Ferrari (B) 1:28.164 + 0.073 18
3. Button Honda (M) 1:28.506 + 0.415 10
4. Davidson Honda (M) 1:28.598 + 0.507 31
Vettel fined after just nine seconds
By Jonathan Noble Friday, August 25th 2006, 12:06 GMT
Sebastian Vettel succeeded in making a double bit of history at Istanbul on Friday when he was handed a speeding fine just seconds after the start of his F1 career.
As he left the pits to become the youngest driver to take part in a Formula One event, at just 19 years and 53 days, the German succeeded in breaking the pitlane speed limit.
An official statement issued by the stewards confirmed that Vettel was caught doing 64.3km/h in the pitlane, just nine seconds after the track had opened for first practice.
Despite the incident, Vettel's performances to top the times in the second session have fully justified BMW motorsport director Mario Theissen's faith in him.
"We think that even though he is very young, he has gained a lot of experience already, and he has done a lot of racing," said Theissen.
"He started very early and he has proven he can handle it. And that is why we applied for the super licence in order to give him the chance to provide it here."
Theissen has confirmed that Vettel's place at the team will be reviewed after this weekend.
"That decision is open," he said. "It will be taken on a race-by-race basis."

Sure they had a lot of problems at Germany but that was because the mass damper was suddenly removed. They had run all of their testing and simulations with the mass damper. In Hungry they were no where near as bad as before. In P1 and P2 they were running competative times.
 The thing is, the utter dominance factor is gone. We don't have a "best of the rest" scenario anymore until you get way down the field. Hungary isn't a good litmus test because of the nature of the track and it was wet most of the time.
Removing a key component means they have to go back and rethink other major parts of the package to compensate.
The whole thing sucks in my opinon. Sure the FIA wants to put on a good show and it's exciting that it will go down to the wire, but stick to the rules. Don't change them at the end of the season...
Pics of Toyota from Turkey today. The wing looks the same to me.
The front edge of the upper element sure looks like it's curving up to me! It's blocking out part of "Panasonic"! Interesting.

Re: Vettel - he was still 4 seconds off the lap record. :) ...and I have a feeling they set the car up for "go for it" mode.

I noticed that as well. But the new aero upgrade was supposed to be for the front wing.

True, but last year's times were a different formula so it's hard to draw a direct comparison.
Still pretty damn impressive for his first day on the job. :D

I agree with NYEJ25. Remind me not to listen to what Toyota calls "interesting" anymore.

I think it was Varsha, or maybe Matchett said this morning during practice that Petrol Ofisi is only on the car for the race in Turkey.

I was about to say, PO is there for this race because they are also a major race sponsor.

Yeah and its only on the 3rd car of Davidson. They do have the end plate of the front wing on the Jenson's and Ruben's rides though.

I don't believe it was a "NASCAR scneario" where they change the rules to level the playing field. If it is a double chassis then yes, it is illegal.
It was only wet on Sunday in Hungary, Renault wasn't 2 seconds off like they were in Germany, sure each track is different, but remember Schumacher got pole last year and didn't do much in the race there.
