Gauges and AC unit Light Color Mod part 1

Accurit Performance 01-15-2002 05:20 PM

Guages and AC unit Light Color Mod..

ok guys.....after seein two posts about the same thing.....i think its time to release these bad boys...

this idea i got from a friend who did this last year....=)

ok...you need a philips head and tweezers for this mod...

first off i did the AC Lights...i took apart the dash trim so i can get to the AC bulbs....

everythin coems out pretty easily....if you dont kno how to check on AZSoocby.com or jus leave a post and i ll reply...

i took out my head unit to i can have better access to the AC.....then i took out the AC and took off the two dials(directional control & Temp) and the lil knobs? i don t know hat you call them but the all come off very easily a slight tug....

then removed the face plate for the AC.....there u ll find two bulbs...and tube like plastic that carries the light to the display...the two bulbs both have green silicon on them....use the tweezers and peel off....if the lights been on for a bit its easier since its warm....peels off better....jus becareful not to break the bulb!

then u put on the bulb cover on....i used red...because first using blue it was more like a teal color...not a nice rich lookin blue shine...

you jus slip on the covers....it will stay on there and wont fall out(its made for a 194 bulb) even though the bulbs are pretty small....

then i jus threw everythin back on....

so 2 Bulb Covers were Used...

(i ll post pic here when i get a digi cam hopefully later tonite)

Part 2

Gauges....u ll need a Philips head, scissors and a tweezer...

remove the two bolts...take apart the trim....then 3 more bolts for the gauge cluster.....then remove the plastic, its only clipped on...and then the cluster trim.......this helps to have more room while workin....

then on the back side of the gauges....there are bulb sockets that twist right out....only 4 of them is needed to change the color....
(pic will be added)

the bulb for the fuel and temp is a 194 bulb(i may put in a hyper white bulb there later)

there are 3 more bulbs that help light up the Speedometer and the odometer.... these are smaller bulbs like in the AC....u need to trim the silicon bulbs covers so it fits in the bulb sockets

while doin this the Mileage will also change color...

durin the day u can t really see what you did.....but at night it looks great....
(pic will be added here)

so 4 Bulb Covers were used for this mod...

a total of 6...

since the bulb covers come in packs of 5 i ll jus send 6 to each person who wants to do both guages and AC unit.....
i ll post this up in the Classifieds...or please feel free to PM or email me as well

ooooo...looking forward to the pics...

have you noticed any change in brightness with the blub covers?
Accurit Performance 01-15-2002 06:50 PM

nqwan - yeah the brightness isn t as bright as b4 but looks good at night...its harder for me to tell since i tinted out the plastic cover for the gauges since my indiglo's were too bright....

i wonder if they make small hyper whites for them...hmmmm

Acc
Elite421 01-15-2002 07:56 PM

So your going to sell this? if not when can i find them and how much? also what if you doubled up on the blue covers? Would it be a darker blue or too dark? Is there any darker blue avalable?
Thanks Alex
Accurit Performance 01-15-2002 08:14 PM

Elite421 - even if u double up the ligth then wont be as bright....

i m gonna see how purple will look...when i order some after i get back from Japan =)

i have blue and red in stock.....i think i mma return the blue oens for soem more red and purple....ihad this forawhile but was lazy to do the mod(after doin the indiglo gauges i didn t wanna touch the gauges no more hahaha)

but red looks hot...=)
west_aust 01-15-2002 08:30 PM

just waiting to see some pictures, both would look better than green

how's the red? is it real red or more orange, like you find in bmw's?
nqwan 01-15-2002 09:04 PM

oh, i forgot the inevitable question...will these work/be available for the wrx? :D
Elite421 01-15-2002 09:39 PM

I'll probally end up going red then
ALex
Accurit Performance 01-16-2002 07:58 AM

ok...lookin again last night while driving around at night....

the red looks REALLY nice in the AC Unit......lieka nice RED....not orange.... :)

in the gauges....i swapped out all of the 4 bulbs....but i do still have my indiglo gauges in the speed and odom....(i took out the fuel and temp indiglo) so my fuel and temp is now also red....its nto as bright as the AC UNit....but i m gonna try to stick a hyper white bulb and red cover there since its a 194 bulb.....i ll do this later today.....and the Mileage/trip meter is hard tos ee at night....then again it could be the glare fromt he indiglo....hahah...
then i ll post up how well it looks later....

i m still tryin to get pics(friend needs to roll on over wit a digi cam)

Is there anyway to change the brightness of the dash lighting? I mean going beyond the max adjustment? The green lighting in my wrx isn't very bright at night, even at max.
bbbradley 01-16-2002 12:37 PM

Another option is just to use some glass paint, color of your choosing, and paint the bulbs. I found it at a crafts store. I did this to the gauge lighting in my Miata. I am very happy with the way it looks.

/bill
Accurit Performance 01-16-2002 01:06 PM

bbbradley any pics? only thing about paintin them if they brun out u have to paint it again with the co ers u can jus take off and put on the new bulb...=)

NeoGeo i m not sure...other option would replace with higher watt bulbs but they re really small...never seen bulbs like that in a shop...

Accurit Performance 01-16-2002 01:07 PM

u jus put in a hyper white bulb for the Fuel and Temp....later tonite i ll give a look see....

and i ll TRY to get some pics tonite!

My Miata is tucked in for the winter, so if you don't mind waiting a few months I'll provide pics...

It takes all of about 30 seconds to paint them, and once those sleeves are on for a while they tend to fuse to the bulb from the heat, so removal is not possible. You then have to find a source for the single sleeve, whereas with paint you already have the hobby paint.

/bill
mvstype 01-16-2002 01:40 PM

I can't wait to see pics. If it looks good I'll buy.

Mike
Accurit Performance 01-16-2002 01:46 PM

covers can t fuse since its alot bigger then the bulb it sits there with the socket(it holds it in place) if everyone wanted to paint it the option is there....if they wanna buy covers the option is also there....everyone has their own style of doin things i jus like to show people that theres more things u can do...

i hate having only one option....i like to have as many as i can!!!

My stereo is next

YO~!!! Bryon!!! hahaah

u kno i m not sure if pic can really help show the shien at night....i wish i still had my SLR camera

Acc
That doesn't sound very secure...oh, well, personal preference...

$3.00 for a bottle of paint vs. $10 for the sleeves. Either way pretty cheap.

/bill
Accurit Performance 01-16-2002 07:10 PM

when u put the cover on its held in place it won t move...same for the AC...when u put the face back on

i ll post this in the classifieds later in Feb....

I am very interested in red since my Kenwood unit can have red a red (or green) display. Any thoughts on the rest of the green (ie auto lights for those of us w/ auto trans)?

Thanks!

DEVO-2nd GEN 01-17-2002 04:51 AM

The shifter green is hopeless, it's green coated plastic..
if you can make the light bright purple and thru green it MIGHT become blue..

and yes, i wanted those cap thingies for my dash for a long time now, i took out my green a long time ago.. i like it halogen yellow more than green :D

gime gime gime !
bbbradley 01-17-2002 07:02 AM

FYI - If you want to get the right size bulb sleeve these guys have a variety of sizes and colors...and they are cheaper too. ;)

http://www.egauges.com/vdo_acce.asp?Subgroup=Light_Diffusers

I have bought some gauges from them in the past and they were very helpful, so if you are not sure the bulb size, give 'em a call!

/bill
LowNotezAudio 01-17-2002 12:02 PM

Nice work man I was one of the posts asking if this could be done but one thing I dont like is the bulb condoms they kinda restrict light and the color is a little off. You said the bulbs are 194s? I know for a fact that they sell 194's in red but I'm almost positive they make them in blue also. Why not just replace the whole bulb?

Does anyone have any more information regarding this mod? I am looking for some more specific info. This is what I have collected so far:

The #194 bulb (standard in use for many gauges and used in the temp/fuel part of the gauge cluster) can be replaced by a hyperwhite for a brighter look. They can also be purchased in colors. These can be purchased from Import Car Parts Plus, Options Auto Salon, Lightlens.com and other places. The lights and little rubber caps may also be available from Egauges . The problem is I don't know what the size and/or model # the smaller light in the dash is (re: WRX). I may have to take my dash apart just to find out. I have not seen any pics with just the bulbs changed so i don't know how it will work. Any specifics would be helpful and i will be sure to document any progress that I make.
WrxW 02-01-2002 12:44 PM

Also would like to know what the 02 WRX take in the dash.
If it's the 194 were in luck..lots of colors aval.
Pat Green 02-01-2002 01:24 PM

They do in fact sell colored bulbs in most auto stores. Red and blue mostly. Better way to go than the condoms or paint-on method IMHO. The condoms have a tendency to block more light since they're opaque, and the paint-on method has a tendency to peel off after 6 months due to the heat from the bulb. :alien:
Dr. WOT 02-01-2002 01:47 PM

yes but in a lot of cases these in dash bulbs are soldered in and that is more work than I'm willing to go through, plus it brings unreliablity into the equation

simple solution: buy a car with dash lighting that you like
IMPREZA GUY 02-01-2002 03:16 PM

hmmm if you guys can do the dash, does anyone know how to make the fogs blue? and i mean light output, not just the fog lense
Dolphin Overton 02-01-2002 03:29 PM

Get some crappy Nokya bulbs for the fogs to make them blue. They will not be as bright though.

I have taken the dash apart in the wrx. There are many bulbs in there. some have the condoms on. Forget about changing the color, though. That is unless you want to take your needles off, remove the plastic plates with the numbers on them and sand the green coating off of the back of it, because that is what gives it the green color in the wrx dash. Someone in another thread did that, but they have issues with their needles now. I am going to learn to love green :) much fewer headaches.

BlackBeastie - are you sure?

on the GC gauges when u pull it apart u can jus take out the bulbs form the back of the gauge cluster and not fromt he front where the needles are.....i figure its the same as the GC as for the GD

i got soem pic si m gonna post soon of the mod on my car but i still need a wrx to try it on...

Accurit-
Yeah I am sure. I have only tried to change the color in the cluster. I have taken it out and replaced some of the bulbs with colored ones. The only thing it did was make the right side of the cluster darker. This cluster is not the same as the GC8 one so far as I have read. If I do anything it will probably be indiglo, but not the reverse color ones I have seen. Wait for black face ones.
Accurit Performance 03-18-2002 01:36 PM

man that sux.....well it saves me time pullin my friends wrx apart....maybe the HVAC is still do-able

maybe reverse indiglos are the way to go....they look awesome

=\ too bad i have the first gen indiglos aww shucks

Jasno999 03-20-2002 06:24 PM

I want to do mine in blue but I do,'t want to get indiglo cause I have autometer guages in the middle console and they have black faces. I do not want to change them out for new ones. I just want to go with Blue bulbs/condoms. But some people say that will not work..

Help me out here....
6Pack 03-20-2002 06:31 PM

I'll be installing the reverse indiglo shortly (already have them in hand).

What's the best way to do the other lights in blue (don't care about radio)? Anyone do this yet? How'd it turn out? How'd you do it? Pics?
Jasno999 03-20-2002 07:45 PM

Ueah guys let us know how to do it
Murray 03-20-2002 11:39 PM

just a little FYI...
the pre 97 models had the different dash cluster layout, where the coolant temp and gas were on the far sides of the cluster...
well, i did this mod...75% of it anyway..
i only got 75% of the way because i didnt know the dash had 6 bulbs that had to be changed..not 5, which is all the bulb covers i had...(lack of planning ahead of time)
well, needless to say, the portion that i have done looks great in red, no more ugly green.
but i sitll need 3 more "condoms" to cover the one remaining in the dash and the 2 tiny bulbs in the heater controls..
so you need 8 total for old style guages..
---
also, taking out hte heater controls was a bi*ch..i had to pull out the radio, reach way up behind it with a long screw driver, and carefully unscrew the 2 screws that hold the front trim piece on..once thats out of the way you can simply pry off the black faceplate thing and se the 2 tiny green bulbs, which you cant get to with fingers..so tweezers are the only way to go, and they will most likely rip when pulling htem off, so it will take a few minutes of playing to get all the green off.
seeing how i dont have the red covers to put on those bulbs yet, it looks odd being "yellow" without the covers on it..but its better than green.
the guage cluster was also a fun piece to take out..im not sure about the RS's, but the 97L has a mechanical link to the speedo cable..so when you remove the screws to the cluster..you gotta pull hard to detach the cable, then just unclip the 2 electric connectors, remove the big bulb holders(not color coded like my old celica was.. :(, change the condoms or bulbs, then put em back in(remmeber, 6 in the dash of this style cluster).
re-attaching the cable is even more fun, because you get to take off the lower dash assembly(the piece your knees almost hit while driving, and reach your arm way way up in the back and feel for the cable, then do some amazing twisting efforts and feel for hte mating hold for the cable, then somehow hold hte cable steady(its a firm cable, so it shouldnt bend much) as you push the cluster onto it...

damn does that sound familiar...
anyway..
when i put the last condoms in place, i wll try to document it with a digital camera..i hope i can find one by then.
someone may want to try putting in brighter bulbs under the condoms, i noticed the light output of the red is about 3/4 what it was with the green.. but it still looks sweet!
especially if you have a red faced radio(Sony XPlod).
id suggest matching all the interior lights, it really makes it look alot better.
oh, i also took apart my switch for my rear defroster and determined that you can change the color of htat bulb too...if its not burnt out like mine seems to be, if you try this, be careful because theres a little grain-of-sand sized ball inside that completes the circuit when the switch is on..i was lucky isaw where it dropped.
the bulb in the switch is REALLLY small too..only a bit of red ink should be needed for that bulb.
anyway, enough about that...i will try for pics ASAP
Murray<--- gas guage is still green, plus 1/3 of speedometer...hehe, looks funny
Accurit Performance 03-21-2002 02:08 AM

the Blue condoms i tried before comes out like a tealish color....not a rich lookin blue that most of ya woudl prolly want....

so red is the best way to go....if not indiglos is another option.....when i can get my hands on a used gauge cluster i m gonna try somethin else to make ti brighter and more useful....

6Pack the radio is do-able a friend in CT knows how to....but since i got a new head unit i didn t bother with the mod to the stock unit...

Murray 03-21-2002 06:14 AM

if your interested in a spare radio for toying with, i got the stock tape player from my car, plus a few old radios from previous cars(AM/FM/CD/Tape from 90 Celica GT-S with optional audio sys. upgrade and a OLD tape player from an 86 Oldsmobile) as well. not asking for much for any of em, i got pics if you want as well.
hey Phil...im gonna be in need of 3 more bulb condoms, hehe, so i will most likely be trying to arrange meeting somewhere or something, unless you just wanna mail em my way or something.

6Pack 03-21-2002 09:34 AM

How to get a rich blue color for the temp controls? Paint the bulbs? Celophane?

(I wasn't interested in the radio because I'm replacing it with something from Pioneer or Alpine).
racerwad 03-21-2002 02:43 PM

done

ok-

so i just finished the install of red blubs behind the gauge cluster (speedo, tach, etc) as well as painting the little bulbs behind the HVAC controls. for the most part it is a fairly easy mod. you just need to be patient. i found red 194 size bulbs at my local shucks auto parts. could be kragen or something else in your neck of the woods. i also got a new pair of little bulblets for behind the HVAC controls. i forgot the size but there is only one size that ought to match. the aftermarket replacements are a little bit brighter than the stock ones which make a difference.

the paint i used was testor's flat red. all the reds match perfectly. the only real problem is the gauge cluster lights are dimmer than before, especially the odometer. i am now on the hunt for red 194 LED's. i think that would solve the brightness problem. another solution would be to get really bright white LEDs and paint them.

just thought i'd post my experiences with this mod. seems that people are having a brightness issues irregardless of whether they paint, replace, or condom the bulbs behind the gauge cluster.
