**New Pics**GOTO:Racing's new race car for 2006: The Legacy GT
For everyone who has been interested in seeing these cars raced, we may have the cure for you. Last week we brought a 2005 Legacy GT into our stable and began it's preparation for wheel-to-wheel competition in 2006. We are building to both Grand-Am Cup and US Touring Car specs, and the car will be ready for testing after the new year.

Below are some pics from the first week of the build. Right now we are coming up to the end of the fabrication stage. I will post updates as the project takes shape. Enjoy!

Ready to start building?

All I can say is WOW. It looks like I might be traiding my baja T in for a 06 LGT sometime after the new year. I just have run into some relly back luck with my baja.

Good luck with the project guys. Keep the pics updated and progress of the build up! I'm jealous with all the project and different classes/cars that your team gets to play with.

I know, isn't is amazing the things we would rather have than money...

Seriously though, this project is going to be possible because of the contributions of some really generous people and companies. I will detail them all as the car comes together and their contributions become clear.

To start, we have to thank SOA for their support in getting this project started, and helping us to work on homologations for the various racing series we are looking into.

I'll have to get into that later when I have such funds to run NASA's USTCC ;) Which series do you guys plan to run in?? It's going to be a little bit hard to compete against fellow STi's in the same category and class..

Very cool. Can't wait to see it in full livery. :D

Please don't make it look like one of those silly rally car liveries...that'll never go over w/the kids.

Sweet ride! Great to see a GT getting prepped to race.

Are you going to be installing door diagonals or "x"s in the cage? Is that 1.75" or 1.5" tubing? Looks good..

The Driver side is going to get a GrandAm spec NASCAR style triple door bar. We have not finalized the design of the passenger side yet.

Chris Lock
outback2.5HO 12-13-2005 05:19 PM

The triple door bar is a good design for the multiple side impacts that the are common in road racing (especially NASCAR).. ;) Why not use the same style on both sides?

What size tubing?
goto_racing 12-13-2005 05:42 PM
1.75x .120. Grand-Am rules would have let us do .90 wall, but USTCC required .120. But at the weight we will be running at, it won't really matter. Rather err on the side of saftey.

Chris Lock
trhoppe 12-13-2005 05:46 PM

Not sure on grand am rules, but can you pull the window glass, etc without a nascar style bar? If not, I would think double nascar bars would be nice as you could get rid of all the glass. If you can remove the glass, etc regardless, there was a good discussion on honda-tech about the pros and cons of nascar bars in other types of impacts other then a side impact. Seemed to me that a gusseted two bar "x" where the bars met in the middle but didn't cross each other was the best solution.

Grand am spec states that window glass on driver and passenger side MUST be removed. I think NASCAR style bars on passenger side would be a good idea to help offset the weight from the driver side without jam packing your ballast box. Also be prepared Chris, starting in May GrandAm is requiring the BSR fueling rig as spec fueling rig, so be sure to get that one from the get go.

We just received the homologation from Grand-Am today, and it has been added to their rules on the website. Here they are:

Subaru Legacy
Wagon/Sedan
2005 (2.5)

Final Drive: 4.11:1
Fuel Capacity: 17.0
Weight: 3050

Notes: Tire size 225/45/17. Must run stock exhaust with muffler, stock air box with stock air filter, stock boost and stock RPM Unit.
trhoppe 12-14-2005 06:26 PM

Ouch on the Notes!
solo2wrx 12-14-2005 06:32 PM
Ouch on the Notes!
That is what I was thinking. But I guess the car is putting out decent power and should have enough to compete in the ST category of Grand Am Cup.
trhoppe 12-14-2005 06:37 PM

What is the "RPM Unit"? Can you do ECU mods and boost? More imporantly, is that 3050 with driver or w/o?

-Tom
What is the "RPM Unit"? Can you do ECU mods and boost? More imporantly, is that 3050 with driver or w/o?

-Tom
We are clarifying that right now, but we imagine they mean we need to keep the stock rev limit in effect. We are required to run data aquisition to keep track of our boost levels, so we got a motec DA system. For ECU mods we are getting an Ecutech.

per the GA rules, weight is measured "dry" and without driver. Add driver and fuel, and we are looking at about a 3300lb car!

Power is not our concern, but you can see that tires and brakes will be a huge issue, especially since we are not being allowed wider tires.

Hello,

How heavy are the RX8s and does anyone know what they're putting down at the wheels? Also, Chris, is "stock boost" stock peak or stock curve? If it's the full stock curve, how will they enforce that if they let you reflash? Changes to timing or other things can affect the stock boost curve...

The RX8 will be 2700. I have no idea how much power it will be making

As of right now, we are assuming that it is Stock PEAK, since that is how they handled the other turbo cars.

Chris Lock
I would have to say that the RX8 is putting 200 to the wheels because they are allowed exhaust and intake and rotaries respond really well to these mods. Since the RX8 stock puts down about 190, I would say atleast a 10 horse gain with the exhaust and intake. I guess the Legacy will be in the same league as the BMW's as they weigh about the same and probably have similar power output. Either way getting stuck with that narrow of a tire is going to be a handicap.

Unfortunetely, we weigh 200 lbs heavier than the next heaviest car, the BMW 330. Its ok though, we raced all season last year in USTCC weighing 500 lbs more than our biggest rival.

Well to be fair, we do put out 250 hp/250 tq stock, and the 330 puts out something like 235 hp/215 tq (I think?). It still is a bit extreme in my opinion but thats what you get when you are AWD and turbo. Everyone is scared :D .

Have the restrictions that GAC has placed upon the LGT caused you to think twice about choosing GAC ST over World Challenge TC? That's not to say that the SCCA VTS wouldn't have been just as restrictive, but it's interesting that you chose a sprint style race series in addition to an endurance format.

Good luck regardless.

We enjoy both kinds of races, however I hardly call a 3 hour race an "endurance" really.

Why GAC? Mainly because it offers alot of career path choices for both our drivers and crew. It's ST->GS->GT->DP system is a great development ladder, similar to the successful ladder system of NASCAR. The series as a whole is beging to shape up a place where road racers can make real careers, and this atracts us. Also sponsors are really interested in it right now with it's recent attention and lots of TV time, and we hope to pick up funding.

Why USTCC? It has a high "bang-for-it's buck". As a West Coast based team, this entry level pro series keeps us close to home and keeps our travel and crew costs to a minimum. Sponsors on a budget can get on board with this for "reletively" cheap, and they still get their name in the side of a really hot car. Also this year has been rumored to hold some more pretty great support races for larger pro series like CART and IRL(also a good way to attract more funding)

Besides, IM already has WCTC covered, and the ESX car seems to have designs on WCGT If our goals as race teams is to promote subaru road race cars, it makes more sense to get them into as many pro series as possible and keep them there.

You know that that alone will give you a distinct advantage as there has been some pretty nifty, not proportional to a wrx, close to a stock STi, power gains out of the LGT just by removing cats and not even touching the EM.

I'll be very interested to see how this goes and will hoping thatyou guys come to ViR this year...I should be there for my school...so I'll keep and eye out...

as for the Rules dictated to you, I see tires and brakes being your big issues...they making you weigh 3300 loaded and on stock tires...kinda sucks....but we'll see if that stops you guys

Almost every car we have ever had has been the "overweight car". So we feel our experience prepares us well to overcoming these obstacles. Our setup, driving styles, and strageties are all geared toward tire and brake management, so we should be ok.

We know. shush! :). Like I said before, we don't feel we will be underpowered, but our ability to use that power is severely diminished by weight, tire, and brakes. Honestly I have no idea where we are going to end up, but we will let everyone know after the first test day.

A few more pics to hold you guys over. All the magor fab work has been completed, the interior painted Subaru 33A, and some work was done on interior detail pieces. We really liked the look of the stock dash, so in keeping with the spirit of Grand-Am Cup "stockness", we decided to leave it and the center console in and integrate our switch panels into them. Of course, we had to use carbon fiber... Also added some spring retainers to the trunk, per the GA rules.

This week: exterior paint, other detail work.
Next week: fuel cell, suspension, all other bolt ons.

Who will be doing your ecutek tune? PDXTuning has done some auto-x tunes with race gas and gotten some good gains just as a heads up, give them a ring if you want, however I am not sure your location, assuming east coast so that may not be an option to have them dyno tune your car unless they flew out.

keep up the good work.
