headlight thread
OK, After searching and turning out a couple hundred posts to root through with only one or two pics per post, I think we should start the official HEADLIGHT thread.
Maybe a moderator can make this a sticky once we get enoguh people posting pics.
Please post your pics of your headlights: Modded OEM, JDM, UK RHD projectors, Morettes, STi HIDs, UK300, prodrive, whatever... post em here please.
hope this works...

sometiime I absolutely LOVE Morettes and sometimes I don't...weird.
I am really beginning to like the Modded OEMs. I realize that it is usually deemed as a temporary thing, but it looks nice!!!
ANyone have JDM HIDs??? Aren't they slightly different from the normal Sti prjectors, in that they are a slightly more shiny (black chrome) housing??? Anyone???

TiRex,
That is exactly what I aws trying to find out also. I have the Silver Rex with te Orciari lights, but I wanted to see what it would look like painted to the color of the car. Personally, I like it with the offset color, but I was maybe thinking of painting the shell Gun Metal or getting a custom CF cover made.
Let me know what you think?

I am just wondering if any of you guys knows where has the best deal for UK300/Prodrive lights?
I have heard that they make 2 versions of them, one is w/ automated adjustable lighting ( dun really know exactly how its automated:p ) which runs $600~700
and, the one's w/ out the automated adjusting that goes for $300 or something..
I am looking for the second version so if any one has a clue, please let me know !!:D

Bes,
Sorry, haven't checked this for a while. My rims are Konig Toxxins, 18 X 7.5 wiyh a 45mm offset. They come in silver or white with a polished lip. I taped the lip off and painted the centers anthracite. I like them a lot.
scottjua,
Mine look black in pictures, but I actually painted them in Duplicolor cast coat iron engine enamel. Up close it is more of a gunmetal/anthracite color. And the turn signals still reflect pretty well because it is a metallic paint. I've heard a lot of people who do it with flat black lose most of their turn signal effectiveness.

Just wanted to pass along...
I think that no matter what headlight assembly you have, the turn signal lamps can easily be upgraded to provide a much cleaner appearance when off. Maybe everyone has already heard of these, but I've been using Philips' SilverVision lamps for a few years and I really like the look that they have. They are silver when off, but they glow amber.
Ski Man, these would look great with your blue anodized headlamps.
You can get them at a u t o l a m p s - o n l i n e

I really like that pvc sleeve mod to the blinker, but isn't there a super-reduced visibility of the blinker during the day? I mean i did the headlight mod w/ the blinker reflector painted, thinking that it'll make the amber look better since it'll make it darker, and i was right, but what i realized was when i was signaling behind a car, i can no longer see my signal light bouncing off their car.
| sonicblue | 11-06-2002 10:47 AM |
I don't think so, but I can't say I've taken a hard look. No question, there is some reduction, but I've tried to temper it with the following two things:
1) I did not paint the reflective area where the PVC sits, so there is a rim of reflective material still there, untouched from OEM.
2) I painted the inside of the PVC silver. Granted, it's not chrome or otherwise highly-polished, but it's gotta be a step up from painted black.
I guess, technically, I've done one other thing, too, and that is I rewired my side marker to also be a turn signal. Bottom line is, while visibility may be reduced, it should still be significant enough, even for daytime.

very very cool! :D any shot of it at a distance as well?
I was thinking about doing this until I get projectors next year...but had some ideas
1. using a darker chrome tint and applying it to the top amber refelctor area, giving it a still reflective property but changing the color to a "dark chrome" look.
2. masking off the bezels around the two aresas of the main lamp and the turn signal lamp to have a chromed ring, flat balck housing and/or "dark chrome" signal reflector.
3. doing PVC mod, on all flat black but applying refelctive tint to inside of PVC for more refelctivity, like your silver paint idea...
would the tint idea work? would it adhere and not come off? windows can withstand heat and moisture, but would it work inside the closed headlamp? If done well, and it holds I think it would look very cool...but maybe too over the top???

I think all of your steps may results in too much of a "segmented" look. Let me clarify a couple things:
- the main reflective area behind the headlight bulb is a separate piece from the rest of the reflective frame (see this pic).

I wouldn't paint that main area at all - just set the whole back half of the assembly aside during the process and only paint this piece.
- I did mask off the reflective ring behind the turn signal and parking bulb.
- Be careful with too many colors in there (dark chrome around blinker, what would you do around parking bulb? Flat black oustide of PVC, what about the "rim" of the whole reflective frame?). If you want to tape a lot, the most I would vote for is, maybe the rim flat black, the whole interior dark chrome, and the outside of the PVC flat black. You won't really see the inside of the PVC so I like the reflective material idea, could only help visibility.
As far as the tint not coming off, depends on what you use. I don't think your headlights get all that hot, with the exception of the area immediately around the headlight and, to some degree, the clear lens in front of the headlight. I don't think the turn signal area and parking light areas will ever get real, real hot to the point you need to worry about using "high-temp" (usu. good to 900 degrees!) stuff.
Here's a picture of the whole front. I will post some more straight-on daytime shots soon.....

I will post some more straight-on daytime shots soon.....

basically I only meant to have the dark chrome on the turn signal areas. The rest of it would be very hard to do indeed. And the main lamp I would leave the way it is...I would not want to mess with the ability to see at night, but I think the dark chrome look around the turn signals would look nice, as I like the look of both the all black housing and the chrome signal area in a black housing. So a compromise might be nice.
As for the masking and bezels, that might be too much, like you said. might not have the effect I am thinking of and may jsut look terrible. However I like the PVC idea, but don't want to hamper the signal bulb's effective range to the sides.
I like the int idea, and may try it on my signal area whne I get around to trying this mod.
edit: IS there a blue flake to that black paint you used on the housing? like the OEM black WRX color only flat?
