:p :p :p , scott!
It's actually a pint glass (the one end is up real high so the PVC was perfectly vertical while the epoxy set up).
Man, that would be funny, a big pint-glass projector sticking out of your light......

I think you gotta go the all-black (well, all-painted, in my case). I think the bug-eye around the headlight is plenty. Plus, the painted turn signal area looks like an eyelid from a little distance, for just a touch of that "angry" look people always brag about. Not to mention, if you like that PVC idea, I think you have to paint out the rest of the turn signal area to really achieve the "projector" look...
| scottjua | 11-08-2002 12:39 PM |
no freakin way...I'm going the pint glass route! :D
but seriously I think I'll be brave and try the tinted signal area sans PVC...if it start to look like-a crud I will then make the decision to go all black or leave the signal area chrome...
I would like to see more pics of some DIY headlight mods with BODY COLOR instead of black. I saw one of a blue housing...an upclose pic, that was different from the one in this thread and it looked mighty spiffy.
I still can't wait to get some jdm lhd...I wanna see more pics of those as well.
Does anyone know if overseas WRXs like the STi Spec C use our lamp design exclusively or are the projectors an option. My guess there must be a weight savings...???

lighting
I know there is tons of debate regarding looks STI vs Morrette vs Prodrive vs Headlight mod, etc. I personally think that most of the alternate set-ups look good in their own right. What I need to know is are there any major advantages in terms of lighting between the STI/Morrette/Prodrive? I would definitly consider upgrading to HID, but i would need to create more plasma to sell first.:(
any help would be greatfully appreciated!

HID conversion ok for stock healdights?
Can the HID conversion kits work with the stock headlight housing? (I'm more concerned with performance over looks, so If I don't have to shell out for aftermarket headlights, I'd rather not) I know there's a limit that the stock bulbs run pretty close to for heat generation before the housing melts. I really don't know how the HID's work as far as heat generation.

i was going to do this, but i was reading in scc that some of the hid kits are illeagel because the stock housing is made for a lower output bulb. so putting a hid kit in the standard housing makes for a VERY bright, maybe blinding light?
not sure, it's what i read but it makes perfect sense. any ideas?

the reason the stock housing is not really meant for HID's is the reflectors....they are basically designed to make the most of the halogn bulb that only glows around the tip...where the filament is..the HID bulbs pretty much light up the entire bulb....basically creating a lot of light where the reflectors are not designed to focus...this therefore creates a lot of "stray" light and the dispersement pattern is pretty random..including into oncoming traffic....

The wiring harness that Morettes come with is poorly designed. You need to install a better ground in order to give the HID ballasts enough current to ignite the xenon. Similar to the "grounding mod" all you have to do is run a decent wire (no smaller than 16 gauge, I used 12 gauge) from the chassis to the negative terminal of each high beam bulb.
You also have to completely disconnect the daytime running light module behind the glove box because doing the easier DRL-disable by unplugging the DRL resistor module under the hood won't work for Morettes w/ HID.

Check out http://lighting.mbz.org/ Especially the FAQ...this is no newbie guide to lighting, read it all :) Hopefully Dan will fix the links to some of the pages. But in brief: HID in an enclosure not designed for them is dumb. HID's need to be projected in a very specific way to be effective, otherwise you will get backglare (reflection of rain/snow/fog) and blind all the other drivers on the road. It's not heat as much as light output. Do us a favor and don't install hiperwhites or whatever trash you find in NOPI :)

Beam...If you put HID in your stock housing, you will lose your high beams. Your standard 9007 is a dual filament bulb, whereas the HID capsule has no provision for switching between high and low beams. Yes, you will probably have enough light that high beam might not be necessary, but try telling that to the people doing your annual State Inspection. :(

I have morrettes with McCullough HIDs.
They are awesome. Highbeams? bah not needed anymore.
I get comments on my lights non-stop. People love them and so do I.
They are bright white with an almost blue outlook. But they appear laser paper white from the drivers seat. They cut through fog and rain like you wouldn't believe.
The morrette projectors (which I believe are hella made) are very very focused. They have a perfect line on the left side and flare up on the right side. With this design they light the road well without blinding oncoming traffic. You can see the line on cars in front of you and if you reach the peak of a hill or some other situation where they would be aiming up more than normal they can easily blind on coming traffic or cars in front of you. Drivers don't like this. They tend to get quite angry, and I can see that as their faces are clearly lit is such situations.
People viewing them from the outside can see an array of colors depending on where they are, at times they look purple, blue or white. It's pretty cool. They seem very similar to some the Audi HID equipped vehicles, I wouldn't be surprised if Hella made their lights as well since they are German.

You're right the Morettes and Audis share the same optics manufacturer, but it's not Hella, it's another German company: Valeo.

does anybody know??
I wonder if the JDM projector lights have the rubber gasket that seals against the hood(when closed) attached to them when you buy them. Or, do you have to purchase the gasket separately??? Anyone with JDM projectors have the answer?? Also, why waste time with a group buy for these headlights @$875 when you can just pick them up from Lisa @ Subaru of Gwinnett for $900 for the pair and not have to wait for a bunch of peoples to get together and pool their money.
| idealrides | 12-10-2002 07:10 PM |
Just thought I'd share this headlight-related lighting mod...
I decided that I wanted to convert my sidemarker lights into an extra set of direction signals because the signals that come with Morettes have no side-visibility whatsoever. Plus I can wire them up as running lights if I ever gate hassled during inspection.
Since I'm using el-cheapo clear sidemarkers off ebay, I got some amber LED bulbs so you don't see an orange blob behind the plastic.
I also got some LEDtronics 6-LED bulbs for the Morette citylights... these were pretty expensive but worth it for me because I hate how crusty-yellow the halogen bulbs look next to xenon.

why not DOT approved
This is an add for the Morette headlights, why do they make this statement?
"TUV approved, they are NOT U.S. DOT legal. They are legal only for off-road use, never for use on a U.S. public road."
Thanks
These projector headlights are a direct replacement for the factory units, but boast a much more aggressive look than the factory "bug eye" lights. In addition, the Valeo projector low beams are the latest in lighting technology.
The high beam is a high-quality Cibie reflector module, and it includes a 5-watt "city light" that can be wired to illuminate any time the lights are on.
Both high and low beams are fully adjustable for proper aiming, just like OEM lights.
These headlight assemblies come in black ABS plastic, ready to be painted. Installation uses factory bolts and mounting points.
Kit includes wiring harness and relays for simple, quick install. English installation instructions are included. They're made in France, so they are designed for left-hand-drive cars like we have here in the U.S. They come with a one-year warranty against manufacturing defects.
Note: While these lights are TUV approved, they are NOT U.S. DOT legal. They are legal only for off-road use, never for use on a U.S. public road.

It's just a disclaimer, they make that statment to cover themsleves legally because the Morettes have not been approved by the DOT (technically speaking, this is so their product can no longer be held to a "Warranty of Fitness for a Particular Purpose" test)

Has anyone had problems with these different headlihgts with the cops or at an inspection because they are not DOT certified right? They say they should not be ued on the streets.

2slow4U - Are you talking about the Morette on the White GC8? I have no idea, I just have it on for about 2 months. Do anybody have any experience about that?

bump
Any issues with EDM lights as far as cops/inspections, etc? If i trade in my stock ones for a set I want to know what kinds of problems I'll be facing with the Law.
(and a bump for this buried thread!)

SORRY if this is a stupid question, but what difference does it make if the headlights are RHD or LHD? it's just headlights in my eyes, right?

LHD pattern:
__/ __/
RHD pattern:
\__ \__
You can see the problem driving with RHD lights in an LHD country.

It's a topic that has been addressed several times on this board.
The only difference between LHD or RHD headlights is the beam pattern. The stock headlights on the North American Impreza WRX or RS basically just throw a big "blob" of light in front of the car, aimed slightly downward so not to blind oncoming traffic.
EDM's or JDM's are projector headlights with a reflector plate that creates a very distinct pattern:
__/ __/ for EDM (LHD) or \__ \__ for JDM (RHD)
The upward section of light will be "thrown" further ahead, lighting the curb, road signs, etc. With the JDM (RHD) this upward section goes towards oncoming traffic. Given the fact that both EDM and JDM have a significantly improved light output over stock, you are basically driving around with lights that blind oncoming traffic when you have JDM's. Owners of these JDM's usually work around that by aiming their lights all the way down. In that case you just spent 7 bills to light the road just in front of you and ending up with worse lighting than stock.
Just my 0.02c. YMMV

Thanks for the info about the headlight beam patterns.
I noticed on your site that you sell a LHD version of the STi headlights. I'm guessing these are not JDM but authentic Subaru lights designated for Europe or something? Based upon your information, it would seem LHD lights is what I would be looking for. I'm in Canada so we're LHD like you guys. I basically want to replace the OEM units with Subaru STi Projectors. Any info would be appreciated.
