How To: Custom Installed Yakima Rack

BEFORE YOU GO AHEAD WITH THIS INSTALL, PLEASE: See my latest custom rack installation at:

I BELIEVE IT SUPERIOR TO THIS METHOD, ALTHOUGH SOME STILL LIKE THIS DESIGN... PLEASE READ THEM BOTH BEFORE GOING INTO THE PROJECT. APOLOGIZE FOR THE LACK OF PHOTOS BUT THEY ARE LONG GONE. IF YOU LOOK AT THE LINK ABOVE THERE ARE WORKING PHOTOS THAT WILL BE HELPFUL FOR THIS INSTALLATION AS WELL. THE OLD PHOTOS ARE LOST ON AN OLD PHOTO HOSTING SERVER ...GOOD OL WE-DID-TODD-RACING.COM :)
1) You'll Need to Purchase:
- Q Towers
- Q Clips (clip number: Q7)
- Crossbars
- Fairing (44") Optional
2) Wash and wax your roof!
3) Follow the initial directions of this link in order to remove the roof striping:
Clicky Here
4) Once the striping is removed you'll see the following riveted connection points

5) Now you must cut and bend the Q7 clips to fit into these connection point. I used a dremel to cut and two heavy duty plyers for the bending. Cut first, then bend. Also...DO NOT BEND BACK if you think you have bent them too much. Bend only in one direction and if you bent it too far, go spend the 20 bucks for a new set of Q clips and try again. The bend should be around 100 degrees. See the following for a good idea of the cutting and bending needed.

6) Do a temp install of the rack and mark on the crossbars about 3cm past where they stick out of the q tower. Cut the crossbars with a hack saw or pipe cutters (easier). This is purely aesthetic...if you want the bars to hang off the ends, then keep 'em long.

7) When you are adjusting the preload on the Q tower cams realize that the rack will pull to the side that is tighter...so use the flathead screws as a way to center the rack on top of the car. Once the rack is installed you must reinstall the roof striping. The trick here is to open both Q Tower cams and feed the striping through the gaps in the Q towers....hard to explain, but easier to understand once you have it in your hands. Take your time reinstalling the striping because it does take a bit more effort with the Q towers now in the way, but you should be able to get a good install.

Final Product:

Impressions:
I love my car with a rack...simply because it is that much more versatile. Not more jamming surfboards and bikes in places they shouldn't be. This rack install versus the configuration reccomended by yakima, thule, and RINNO I believe looks cleaner (no clips hanging down to the window trim) and is probably a bit more secure (due to the fact you are cliping to a structural component rather than an aesthetic component). You also don't have to worry about damaging the window trim. One big minus is that the rack does sit a couple inches higher than if you installed it the way yakima, etc. reccomends. To me, it is worth the added height for the added protection.
Lemme know if there are any questions....

That's a great write up. :) I used to have a Yakima Q tower set up on my Legacy. It always drove me crazy how close those clips were to the window glass edges.

as an owner of a Yakima rack...i would MUCH rather have mine done YOUR WAY! Everytime I close my door i felt like the window was going to break...there was just about 0 clearence for the window and the clips to clear eachother.....Ill definetly print this out and do it. :)

2 questions:
is there any flexing or bending of the roof now that the load towers are on the inside of the gutters (on the weak fart of the roof)?
can it be uninstalled and installed again without removing the stripping?
looks really nice.

No flexing or bending. Towards the center of the roof is very flexy...but near the edges it is stiff. The towers should be mounted right on the outter edge of the roof.
I highly doubt you could install and reinstall it without removing the stripping...and you'd also amost definetly damage the stripping by trying.
This method is definetly more directed to those who don't take their racks on and off every week or so. Although the stripping is easy to install/uninstall once you get the hang of it.

yeah...just not the best shots. Believe me, you can do the cutting and bending yourself. It is very easy and takes about 5 minutes a corner.

I usually surf at Seaside Oregon's point, Neah bay, and the straights in WA. This weekend I was a little adventurous and made it over to British Columbia. I lucked out...head high and one of the longest waves I have ever ridden (I would say 8-12 manuevers). Here is a crappy vid of a not so great surfer on a smaller than average set wave....it also only represents about 30% of the entire wave (I was shooting from in my car cause my arse was frozen after being in the water from 6:15 am - pitch black and cold!). In the PAC NW you have gotta really know a spot to be able to judge when it will get good..even the beach breaks are fickle due to our large tide swings. So to be able to go to a new spot and hit it good is rare, needless to say I was stoked. The driving along the coast is incredible too....minus the insanely slow speed limits, but at 6am I wasn't too worried. Not to highjack my own thread, but I have a hard time avoiding a surfing related question.

Something similar to the yakima Q7...?
Sorry, I have always been a yakima guy...best bet is to go to a dealer that has both yakima and thule, and find one similar. There is really no need for exact dimensions here...the one important thing is to get a shorter clip so you don't max out the adjustment on the tower.

not sure if you fully understand. The Q78 clip is the clip that is reccomended by yakima....it's longer so the rack can hook into the window frame. Using the modified Q7 clips instead (which are very short) allow you to hook into the subaru factory riveted roof mounts (see pics). When buying the clips don't say you need yakima clips for you WRX, simply say you need the Q7's. Still loving the rack....surf was excellent today, stoked and going again tomorrow.

That mod looks great. I have had yakima racks for previous cars, but didn't like the way the standard clips fit by the windows. I found this rack system from a dealership in England. It is very nice and comes with the locks and keys. The bars are the same as Thule bars so any accessories, Yakima or Thule can fit. http://www.cheammotors.co.uk/products.php?productId=135

If I had a wagon I would just use the factory racks. They look great and now with everyone accomidating stock racks for accessories like bike/surf/ski racks, there is no reason to go yakima, etc. IMO

Yeah...I looked into this option, but the rack sits sooooo high on the car. And no farring would fit it sitting so high. Two pretty big draw-backs for me. Oh and the fact that it has to be ordered from the other side of the pond.

I know it's an old thread, but nice write up. I have had my rack for several years with the same issues of thinking the glass will burst when you shut the door. In fact I accidently damaged my window frame and now I can't close the door unless I roll the window down slightly. I think I may give this install a try next week.
Thanks!

In my case yes for the driver's side only due to my own stupidity. I backed my car out of the garage, door wide open and slightly misaligned the window. Before I did that, it would just slightly click the top edge only. So the standard install will work. The install in this thread just looks so much better and you can slam your doors without worry. It also looks like the towers seat nicely on a flat surface instead of merely standing off the sides. I'm going to try this install next week.

man... i had ski racks that hooked under the window sills last winter. they were awesome because they were the two sided racks that held a mess of skis. great until they blew off my car... scratching up my roof and rear quarter panels.

Thanks for the write up on this mod. I just finished mine. It took about an hour and a half including painting the clips after cutting. My guess is that removal will not require removal of the weatherstripping and depending on how the rubber molds to the tower clip, it may be possible to slide it in place for re-install. This is hands down a stronger attachment of the rack.
The only thing different I found was the passenger side weatherstripping: the clips slide forward instead of back and the front grommet is white instead of yellow.
Thanks jsavage for an inventive install.

Great idea, man!
I just completed this over the weekend with some modifications to your idea; I did it with a Thule rack. I didn't have to buy anything, either. I just cut down the existing [door frame] mounting hooks with my reciprocating saw. I think that if I could do it again I wouldn't even bother taking off the weather strip, I would just lift it off a couple of the clips.
I am really stoked, it looks way better this way!
Thanks again!

specialev - Do you think you could post pics of how it looks using a Thule rack? And you did say you used the existing #206 fit kit, right?
| specialev | 01-11-2006 02:01 AM |
I can take a nicer, more descriptive picture for you tomorrow when it is less close to bedtime. I took this in my shop at some point.

I did use the 206 fit kit, however, I made some modifications with my reciprocating saw. I had to cut-off about 2 inches of material off the hooks that come in the 206 fit kit, leaving an approximately .75" wide tab that was .5" in length, which I bent at a 90 degree angle to fit into the hard points under the weather strip. Of course, you could get the Thule fit kit that is for the same application as the one jsavage used by doing some cross referencing and finding out what car it fits [I believe early nineties Honda Civic].

If you don't mind taking a few more shots, that'd be nice. Perhaps a side shot or close-up? Since I already have the 206 fit kit I might try it on that first and see how it works out.

| jsavage | 01-14-2006 03:25 AM |
Glad people are still getting good use out of the thread.
My rack just went through a 2000 mile road trip with two mountain bikes and a surfboard up top. I am now a San Diego resident and got out of the rainy NW just in time. Cruised at 120 mph in the California desert for hours (Californian's drive fast! - I was just keeping up with traffic, officer!).
Needless to say the rack is still solid as ever....still very happy with the mod.

Awesome write-up.
I have a general question... where did you guys purchase your Yakima racks? Who has the best prices on the net? This install doesn't look too bad at all... and I need a damn rack!!

are the thule racks much higher than the yakimas? or is it just the set up when using the rain gutters that make it seem higher than having it clip around the windows?

So to reiterate (sry for noobness)... I need:
- Q Towers
- Q Clips (clip number: Q7)
- Crossbars
- Fairing (44") Optional
Are the crossbars 48"??
And for snowboards.. what do i need.. the lift ticket 4 or 6 right? Or will the other models work too? Anything else? Sorry I just want to make sure and I couldn't find another thread... and i don't wanna ask a retail store and get ripped off. thanks nasioc.

They seem to have some really good deals. A complete Q tower setup inculding crossbars and Q clips for $ 206. You'll just have to make sure you specify you need the Q7 instead of whatever comes for a WRX. That cost isn't including a wind fairing or any attachment for bike/board or whatever. Still not bad from what I've seen.

Dumb question..

Is the 100lb load limit still applicable? Is that a function of the rack or the roof? Thanks!
| jsavage | 01-20-2006 01:21 AM |
Racks have a load limit, and roofs have a load limit. I believe the 100 lb. limit is the limit of the roof in this case. But I also know some cheaper rack systems have limits less than 100.
Reccomend people to check out the new company: RV INNO
They make racks and accessories that fit yakima/thule. Their surf rack is by far the best I've seen, and I'm sure their ski/board racks are good too.

I use the Thule box on mine. It holds a ton of stuff and keeps it all dry.

Ha Ha, you would scream at mine! I have a Thule box on top of my yakima rack with the crossbars offcentered so the box aligns with the side of the car. Purely functional as my car gets filthy in the snow. That way I don't have to lean on the car to open and get into the box.

I know... Im just a bit too lazy. Those crossbars are beefy! Maybe when Im really bored. As of now, they dont bother me too much.
I heard someone tried this after he looked at a picture. Instead of following directions and putting the clips into the little bracket, he just slid it into the weather stripping and as he was driving with some snowboards, they flew off and messed up the trunk and his stuff was on the freeway.
