How To: Custom Installed Yakima Rack part 3

RR BuGGz 09-27-2006 12:54 AM
The paint looks good with the paint. I did the same but got impatient and didn't allow the paint to dry :o

Needless to say, the clips went on with fingerprints and tacky paint
:) Believe me I almost got impatient but decided to wait it out. Besides I need to find a vinyl shop able to cut some rockblocker film. Every shop said it was too think for their plotter. I may have to just used a paper cutter and cut square pieces. Can't wait for this to be done. My wife started taking the Jeep to work which is the only vehicle with a bike rack. Been missing a lot of riding time lately.
Hank3 09-27-2006 09:20 AM

Haha - I meant to say "pieces look good with the paint." Fixed the original response :o
MoJack 09-27-2006 12:17 PM

I didnt know the clips came in pairs of 2. Just assumed there were 4 inside. I suck.
<---- Going back to rackattack.com to order and wait some more but in the mean time is modifying the 2 clips he does have. What kind of paint did you guys use.
Hank3 09-27-2006 03:36 PM

Paint choice isn't a huge deal - it's really up to you. I just got some Rustoleum from Lowes in semi-gloss.
Rapid_Roo 10-04-2006 01:30 PM

great write up. thanks. :D

? does the fairing help with the wind noise. is it worth it ?
cMags 10-05-2006 08:13 PM

I just got a set of Yakima racks on my wagon and the noise was pretty loud at 60+. I just installed (maybe an hour ago) a 32" fairing (needs to fit between the rails on a wagon) and the difference was amazing. I wasn't sure because of how small it was and how high of the roof it sits with those feet, but man they're nice and quiet. I can hear my mirrors howl again now
RR BuGGz 10-06-2006 12:42 AM

Finally got around to installing mine. One minor problem though. The front part of the weather strip by the front windsheild keeps popping up. The clip stays in for a little while then slowly pops out. It's the first clip that pushes onto the roof not the first slide clip. It happens on both sides. Theres a bit more pressure to clip the weather strip in with the q clips in. So I think it's putting pressure on the front causing it to pop out. Anyone else have this problem?

Mine has been installed for almost a couple of months now and it hasn't had this problem. Maybe check to see if your clips are damaged to where they're not fastening properly? I know I broke a couple of clips while installing, but I ordered some new ones and replaced them :)

Did you just get your clips from the dealer? I broke a few myself ;)
Hank3 10-07-2006 11:50 PM

I actually ordered them from Wilkins Subaru. They offer stuff at discounted prices - the difference in price with shipping still beat out my local dealer's price. I would've went with Subie Gal, but she's on the opposite side of the country from me - I needed it fast. Since you're on the west coast, try to order some from her. Or you can go to your local dealer - don't know if they would offer it at discount prices, though.
iamtherealwoody 10-11-2006 03:43 PM

Man just in time, I was about to order some yakima racks for my WRX, but this looks 100x better than stock install. I dont have anything to make cuts though, but thank god my uncle is a carpenter. I will definitely do this in the next few weeks, tired of putting my 8'0 funboard in the front seat.
Vikingmoose 10-11-2006 07:26 PM
... tired of putting my 8'0 funboard in the front seat.
You were able to fit an 8' funboard in the front seat? I couldn't even fit a 7'6" funboard in my car.
iamtherealwoody 10-11-2006 10:06 PM

I know its pretty crazy. I have you put in into the driver side rear door and out the front passenger side door. then push it to the back driver corner of the rear windshield then finally goes into the foot space. Only without fins though.
03scoobyRS 10-27-2006 12:44 AM

this is awesome, on both my drivers side and passenger side windows are chipped at the top where those stupid clips hang down. i usually have two 44 pound bikes on the rack and im not driving like a grandma so that migtht help. but this idea is unreal, and im doing it.
IllNastyImpreza 11-02-2006 12:13 PM

Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice. I'm gona have to try this one. I was scared about how I was gona get my snowboards up to the mounting with my little impreza....

thats actualy pretty convenient.... btw how much does a decent rack cost?

Couple hundred bucks at least. Check your craigslist if youve got one.

I lucked up and got q-towers, crossbars, fairing, 2 viper and one king cobra mounts, and lowrider towers (sold already) for $200. I think thats the deal of the year, considering the guy dropped probably 700 at least for all of it...
webcrawalr 11-04-2006 02:36 PM

Anyone try this with a Q4? Looks to be the same length as the Q7 but the tab is already bent as far as we'd need it... no bending would be required which means it'd be much stronger.

Can anyone with a Q7 measure it's length?

Nice car.
iamtherealwoody 11-16-2006 06:28 PM

So its imposible to do this with the WRX clips right? I hate how the racks mount and always take them off when im done with them. its a hassle.
SaabaruPaul 12-02-2006 09:53 PM

Now that many of you have been using this custom rack install for a while, how would you say it's holding up? I've heard one or two people with problems with the rack staying on tightly.

I am trying to decide whether to do this custom install or buy the EDM rack from the U.K. I already have a Yakima rack, so this option would be less expensive.
Traffic 12-03-2006 03:13 AM

To ease your mind about the decision... I just got back from Big Bear earlier and it was windy. I mean winds of like 35mph+. I had two boards strapped on and had no problems going about 80 on the freeway against the wind. The only thing that worried me for a little was the excessive noise at that speed. Other than that, it held on pretty good.
wangless 12-28-2006 11:04 PM

Currently I've been trying to source these Q7 clips and they have been quite difficult to find in store. I was told by one Sport Chalet that they are actually being outdated and they have ONE pair on clearance for $10 hahaha. They found me another pair which is about 15 miles to the other store, I hope I don't bend them all jacked up :(
arco 12-28-2006 11:45 PM

hey jsavage. thanks again for the rack. it's been such a help. i love it
gopsu 12-30-2006 12:07 AM

Traffic, I have a question. Your car looks amazingly nice with that rack.

I am about to place an order, but not sure what qty to order.

Q Towers: ??
48" CrossBars: ??
Q83 and Q116 clips: ??
Big PowderHound SE: ??

Do I need two pairs for above items? Thanks in advance...
SkyRealms 12-30-2006 04:30 PM

^^^ the clips should be Q7
Mobutusan 01-03-2007 04:11 AM

Do the Yakima Q-towers still lock properly since there is a gap between the mounting clip portion and the footing portion? I'm not completely familiar with the locking mechanism, but I read on another site that someone didn't like this mod because you can't lock the towers. Any truth?

This setup looks great and I am going to try it on my wagon. Easier said than done since I don't have roof rails (previous owner removed them), or the front or rear roof brackets (on special order, front only), just plugged up holes. Oddly enough, I have the middle brackets? I'm probably doing this the hardest way, but I love how my car looks without roof rails, and I want a sweet rack setup for the winter.

TIA

I don't have a gap between the mounting clip and foot. Mine lock down just fine. I'm thinking if there's a gap, the clips aren't bent enough or the towers are in the wrong position on the cross member.

Q7 clips for sale...CHEAP!!
For those of you trying to source these clips, I found a guy on Craigslist who has 5 sets of Q7 clips for $15/set or $19/shipped. They don't get any cheaper. I think he's based out of the Sacramento area, but he ships, so who cares.

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/spo/256592426.html

Hope this helps.
LastResort 01-03-2007 02:19 PM

Do we know how reliable he is?
Counterfit 01-03-2007 02:30 PM

Well, if the Q4 clips are the correct angle according to webcrawalr, someone should try just cutting those to the right width/length.
PSMbaby 01-11-2007 07:08 PM

I just bought my yakima roof rack and I want to install it, it's set up to hook under the roof stripping. I don't know how to take the roof stripping off, any suggestions would be awesome. thanks!
PIAA_NISSAN 01-12-2007 12:39 AM

The first post or two should have a link to another type of rack install that shows you in detail. It's easy you basically take something like a small flatblade screwdriver, slightly wedge it between the door side an the rubber edge, hook it against the black clips and push back. I did all mine to just behind the rear clip and moved it slightly sideways so I didn't have to take it down all the way to the truck.
Well, if the Q4 clips are the correct angle according to webcrawalr, someone should try just cutting those to the right width/length.
The Q4 clips are too long, I compared them and they have the right angle but are way too long to work. As it is with the Q7 clips it tightens just right, any longer and your rack won't stay put:p
PSMbaby 01-12-2007 11:38 AM

cool thank you. i spent last night installing it. It looks awesome! i'll get some pics up :)
RUrunning 01-12-2007 01:07 PM

can the cross bars on the towers fit two ski racks? do they make a bar that wide?
Mobutusan 01-15-2007 04:33 PM

+1 for the Q4 clips being too long. I actually cut them and tried a pair and while the angle of the bend is right, the towers will actually sit up off the roof when tightened. Q7 is the way to go. I'm currently putting these on my wagon that has no roof rails. It's a bit different from the sedan install, and probably the most complicated way to do a rack on the wagon, but when it's done I'll have the best of both worlds. Sleek looks, clean rack.

Rack Mod on my Wagon
Well, I'm not sure if this has been done yet, but I just finished installing the modified rack onto my wagon. So far I love it. It looks way better than the factory rails and bars, and I can still be roof rail free in the summer! Here's some pics...

The guys at the local rack shop said my setup isn't going anywhere. If you follow the directions here to the letter you should be fine. The only thing I did different was when making the cuts I measured the exact clearance within the factory mounts and left the cuts slightly oversize and then beveled the edges with a bench grinder so they would fit VERY snug within the mounting tabs.
Yeah...I looked into this option, but the rack sits sooooo high on the car. And no farring would fit it sitting so high. Two pretty big draw-backs for me. Oh and the fact that it has to be ordered from the other side of the pond.
Just FYI, the Thule fairing fits with the Mont Blanc rack. I have one. I needed the taller rack because some of my buddies have Flow bindings and I have Ride bindings with beefy ankle straps that don't allow me to fold them up very flat. Not for everyone though, I sometimes get annoyed at how they look, but when they're loaded up I remember why I chose them.

When you're removing the weather stripping, be sure to wrap your screwdriver or door panel pry bar with electricians tape to keep from hurting your paint.

Do you happen to have any of these pics? I have flow bindings and was worried about scracthing my roof with the bindings if I carry more than 2 boards.

Where did you buy and was a direct rack kit or a "mod" like the yakima in this thread.

Thanks!

if you use the lift accessory with the yakima rack, you won't have a problem with flow bindings. if i carry more than two boards, i usually just tuck my back plate under the strap on my flows.

I bought mine from Cheam Motors in england about 5 years ago, I don't know where to source them now. I don't have any pics but I guarantee they fit with flows bindings down, but it also depends on the stance width. If you're stance is too wide, you may not be able to drop the bindings between the racks. My new rides on a Nitro come very close to not fitting between. The Mount Blanc/Subaru rack needs no special modification.

1) i just noticed that i said "also... as well," which is over-repetitive redundancy

2) you have a very liberal interpretation of "gold"

3) if the bar still fits, then i'd much rather have this configuration and not put anything against the roof... i had a bad experience with roof racks that hooked under the window sills with towers that sat on the roof

The whole point of getting the "gold" cams in between the marks is so the load rests on the feet, NOT the clips like whats in the picture. I just noticed it looks like his bars are cut too short as well. The towers look like they are sitting at completely wrong angles.

i should think the "load" pushing DOWN with the force of gravity isn't what you'd have to worry about. it's the drag pushing the load BACK when you're driving at 70+mph and the lift pulling the load UP as well. this has been MY experience. and in both of those cases, the force is going to be born almost entirely by the clips, not the towers.
ezoq 02-06-2007 10:04 PM

PIAA_NISSAN 02-11-2007 11:54 AM

In order for the towers to work correctly the weight bearing has to be done on the pad of the tower and the clips help keep the rack down on the roof allowing no lateral or foward/backward motion. I would not want the towers resting on the stripping for the simple fact it's a soft metal trim piece and will eventually compress and loosen rack. Seeing there is no adjustment left they will be worthless in time but to each his own.
Heres some of my pics-

just did this mod and looking forward to trying this out at speeds with three pairs of skis (one of which are fat skis) and a board. i had roof racks that hooked under the windows before, but they BLEW OFF! they ripped off my window sills, damaged my roof an c-pillar, and my skis got hit by a semi :( . already this looks MUCH sturdier, as i can shake the car pretty violently and yank up on the towers without any drama. i got the equipment from a specialty store, and they thought it risky that i go the "custom" route, as the yakima advised hook-under-window-sill route should be strong enough to "lift the car from" . whatever...

so the roof strips come off quite easily, but i noted that the clips holding it down slid BACK on the driver's side, while the passenger side clips slid FORWARD. also, they come OFF easily, but i was a little vigorous puting them back ON, and i cracked a few of the clips, so be gentle. other things i note on my install: adjusting everything so that it's all centered is by FAR the most time consuming part of the job. unfortunately i was not able to get my q-towers tucked all the way up against the q-clips an sitting on the weather strip. when positioned like this, there was a good half centimeter between the bottom of the towers and the roof. so i had to position them out further so that they were just adjacent to the weather strips. oh well...

i didn't get the fairing yet, as it was out of stock, but i am considering this for the future. also, i got the 48" crossbar, which fits pretty nicely, because it doesn't overhang the sides of the car much at all. but there's a good 4" that could be trimmed off each side to make it look cleaner. all in all, a very worthwhile mod, as i ski every weekend that there's snow to be had. i was getting tired of having my gear ride shotgun with only one, maybe two passengers squeezed in the back
PIAA_NISSAN 02-25-2007 01:35 PM

You did right spacing the clips and towers. Sitting your Q-Towers on top of the stripping next to the clips is not the way to go, if you look at the picture of it done that way you can see there is no room for further tension adjustment and is mechanically unsound. The original poster had the right idea which is very safe even though it's not factory specified and is the one everyone is having no problems with. IMHO it's only a matter of time before a deviation from the original idea fails.
Mobutusan 02-25-2007 11:56 PM

+1^^^^
Balabok 02-26-2007 02:51 AM

This sounds like a great idea for those wagon owners who deleted the factory rails and are in sudden need of said rails again.
mobilezen 02-26-2007 01:37 PM

patent the idea with their modified equipment so if they try to throw it out to the public, you get royalties. :D haha. good work.
