Will this work on the newer 06/07 models too? I imagine so, but just wondering if they are the same as earlier models.
Also, has anybody experienced any damage to the roof as a result of this? I mean the roof panel seems pretty thin, and I would hate to put dents in where the feet contact...

the only real body differences in the 06/7 that i know of is fore of th a-pillars, so this should work fine. i did get denting in the roof panel from the first roof rack that i had (the one that blew off and scratched up the roof anyways), which is why i wanted the towers to sit as close to the black strips as possible. it's reinforced in that area and i think it should be fine. plus, since i had a hard time getting the towers to actually sit ON the roof (they sat up too high), i should think that the q-clips are taking a lot of the downward force (especially when compared with the hook-under-window-sill type carriers), so it'll probably be fine. let's hope...

oh, so i went up this weekend with the ski rack (big powderhound, so it's WIDE) loaded from edge to edge, and there were no problems with lift  . however, now i know that i MUST have the fairing, because the wind noise above 50-60mph is terrible. i thought that the large amounts of road noise (lots of urethane bushings and pillowball mounts) would surely block it out, but i was wrong
| wacerx | 02-27-2007 02:13 PM |
yeah the rack requires the fairing even when the bars are empty. believe me when its off season for boarding i surf alot and the bars alone make this horrible howling sound. bought the fairing the next day after putting my racks on cause i just could not stand that sound.

Wagon Rack Mod

I've done this, I'll post a thread about it soon. Pretty much the same as the sedans in this thread except a few things.
You need to remove the roof rails (obviously), and get a special pair of brackets to mount in the holes where the fronts of the factory roof rails went. The rest is mostly the same.
Quickie:
1. Delete roof rails, and/or remove black roof strips.
2. Install mounting brackets Part# 91024FA001 (Bracket Assy A), where front mounts of factory rails were.
3. Get a rack, bend some clips.
4. Mount it up, put roof strips back on, and you're good to go.
This took me a while to figure out what was different, and what I needed to do this, but it's actually not that hard. Time consuming, though.

Not very much on my car, but with 3 snowboards up there today it whistled like a bitch almost the whole way to the slope and back! :( oh well

I thought about that too, but its completely silent when I dont have any boards up there...I think its just the boards tips and edges cutting the wind...but its annoying! ;)
You need 4 of these, right?
Oh yeah, you only need two of them. And the hex flanged nuts to go with them. The size is M6-1.0, I believe (on the box). The brackets already come with the sealing stuff on the threads.
The reason why, is that we the car comes a pair of the mounting brackets already installed above the rear two doors, just like the sedan. It's when we remove the roof rails that we are left with only holes where the rails mounted. The front holes get brackets, the rear get plugged, hehe. Wierd thing is that these front mounting brackets that you need are wagon specific, and not the same as the sedan ones, or even the two factory installed brackets on our wagons. Getting those brackets was my only big hang up, since none of my local dealers had them in stock.
Hope this helps.
BTW My car looks so much better with this rack setup than any other factory rail mounted setup I've seen. Pics don't do it justice, it just looks ready for action. And two minutes later, racks are off, and my car looks clean again.

my bad, double bad post.

Started out with some Q7 clips from ebay. 35 bucks for 4, shipped.

took off my stripping thing and measured the distance to cut. I ended up having a 1inch width. I'd reccomend slightly larger than 1in. Maybe 1.1-1.2inches

I put electrical tape to avoid scratches while test fitting.

Me too,

First, thanks to jsavage for paving the way.
I did mine today too. I wish I would have known druzboyz, we could have done it together. It took my slow a$$ 7 hours and I'm still not finished.
It appears to be difficult but isn't
The only thing I can add is
Cut Q7 : 19.44 mm of both sides leaves 24.65 mm center peice.
Vise method: I hammered (with a block of wood) the angles to 100 degrees
44 inch crossbar : for front leave 150.97 mm hanging out on one side
for rear leave 163.06 mm hanging out on one side.
this centers the crossbar so you can tighten the pinch bolt on the q tower. This get you the m1 and m3 numbers
I still have to finish the ends and post my pics. I think I better wash it before I post the pics too.
Ichi

^^ you live in socal? My clips werent exactly 100 degrees, and one ofthe clips is off by about 2-3 degrees. I noticed after i had bent it. No biggy to me. Id rather just leave it as is rather than try to bend it again with the risk of breaking the metal. haha.
With your measurements though, it looks like youre striving for perfection! No wonder its taking you so long lol. After finishing and looking back at it, it could be completed in about 40 minutes by someone that understands how qtowers work and how to position them correctly the FIRST time.
and yea, thanks for the nice write up, OP.

damnit i wish i saw this when i passed up on an amazing deal on a full powderhound thule rack a few months ago because i have jdm rainguards and thought it wouldnt fit :(
i'm shopping for a used yakima or thule rack again and i was going to just remove the jdm rainguards, but now i think i'll do the install this way instead :)

| TROLL | 05-26-2007 10:18 PM |
put mine on this afternoon... kind of a pain in the ass to get it right to be honest. I didnt feel comfortable with a 100-110 degree angle of the tab... it just didnt seem to be hooking under very much and although it made for a tight attachment I was afraid that over time it might slip out. I bent mine to just about a 90 degree angle and it seemed to slip under and line up everything better for me. I think it might even grab under the bracket better with a less than 90 degree angle, but then it would really start to get in the way of putting the black trim piece back in place.
I did find that the mounting position of the front Q Towers gets in the way of bolting on the fairing as it was intended... thats ok, I just didnt use the 2 bolts and instead used 2 zip ties, which for what they're doing, are just fine.
I'll take some pics soon...

Yes my 07 does have these clips, www.rackattack.com should have Q-7's in stock.
| ilmaestro | 06-04-2007 12:34 PM |
If anyone is wondering if the older coupes (96-02) have these same brackets, they do, although the front bracket is pretty far back and altogether the two brackets are about 23" apart. Since the front bracket was so far back, I decided to just mount it the normal way on my coupe, else my bike would be sitting way to far back over the car.

wish I would have com eacross this thread before I put my rack on the conventional way. my 47 lb. downhill bike dented the hell out of the outside edge of my roof where the feet of the rack sit, Im sure this is a stronger part of the roof and would have prevented me from damaging my roof. dope!!!

Great post with lots of info but has anyone gone through a machine car wash using the Q7 mounts?
i own a car wash and my car gets washed alot and i dont want to have the rack ripped off because of weak mounts or something like that.
Also using the Q7 mounts, does it just slide under the factory roof mount loops? or does it bolt in some way?
Thanks

custom rack on wagon

Mobutusan, thanks for posting info on how to do this mod for the wagon! :p I've been searching all over. I just got a fully stock 06 WRX wagon, and the factory rails+crossbars are too far back to mount Yakima's new Sprocket Rocket bike racks in a forward position. I've came across this post:
Search for "WRX Wagon bike rack solution" (can't post links yet  )
However, these new racks are even longer, and I may still have trouble clearing the hatch. Regardless, several people have commented on how unstable it is compared to mounting the front directly on the rails. It doesn't look so sleek either.
Anyway, thanks again for the info! Now I just need to get all the parts I need:

(2) Brackets for the front - part# 91024FA001
(2) Rain gutter mouldings - part# 91046FE000 (left), 91046FE010 (right)
(4?) Expansion Nuts for plugging rear holes - drawer 45, bin K @ Home Depot, according to someone at Scooby Mods
Yakima rack system: Q Towers, Q7 Clips, 48" bars, 48" fairing
Already have the bike racks (Yakima Sprocket Rocket)
There needs to be a new thread on this! Let me know if I got my parts right...
Thanks,

So I have been watching this thread for aver a year now... Winter is coming up and I will be buying something before too long. How is the custom rack holding up for everybody? Any horror stories? dented roof? lost load? I guess I am just being paranoid...

just use some heavy wax before placing the towers on your roof, cause they *can* leave light marks in your paint after a whole season. adjusting the towers juuust right isn't exactly easy, but if you do, then stop worrying. i've loaded three skis and two snowboards onto my roof and then did 100mph into high desert cross-winds. no problem. oh, and get the fairing.

so far i put 2 small dents into my roof when the locking cable for my bike slipped out of my hands but this could happen to anyone. so far i've only mounted my bike on the roof and the rack itself is doing great. feels nice and solid.

you put it there permantly, or just while doing the initial install? Not like it is "permanant", but doesn't it get pretty funky in the sunlight after a while?

you're thinking too hard. just put it on your clean, WAXED paint DIRECTLY underneath where the towers touch the roof. no need for it to show.

I'm looking into ordering too, I think you need 1 lock per Q tower, 2 locks for the fairing (if you're buying one), and 2 locks for the carrier. So a total of 8 locks. and the crossbars come in a set, so you order a quantity of 1 and just 1 carrier. I hope i'm right.
this is what i plan on getting, sale ends today (10/8)

neg. you do NOT need a lock for the fairing. so there are 6 lock cores total. the turn "handle" that screws the fairing down has one arm that is too long to spin freely once installed. i don't know if that makes sense but you'll see once you get yours.

i bought a thule rack and the trimmings last season to do this mod. and needless to say, no it does not work, at least in the way i wanted. You can mount the towers to these points, but i wanted to leave the peices on and just detach the rack. no go. the thule rack's peices that attach are much larger than the little clips and while you can leave them on, they stick way up and it wasn't the stealthy look i wanted.
I returned all the gear, used my dads truck for that trip, and am looking at the Yakima for this season. Where I can modify the clips, put them in place, and dismount the rack when not in use, and the clips only stick up 1-2 inches above the liner (from what I THINK i have read)

I was asking how the clips were bent new before the mod not after I bend it. Anyway, I was sent the wrong clips and the new ones are good. So I no longer have this problem.

IceWilly,
How high off the roof do the modified YAKIMA clips stick up off the roof without the rest of the parts installed?
I am thinking of doing this trick again on my new car. Last time around I did it with a Thule rack...I wouldn't be against trying it with a Yakima though, and your statement intrigues me.
Got a pic with just the clip installed?
