I thought you were going to be able to see the black inside more......still very nice though
Mechie3 04-29-2008 11:29 PM

The black is fairly hidden. The main difference you notice (since my winter wheels are all silverish, and my summers have the silver outside and black inside) is that the wheels appear to be bottomless pits almost. My winter wheels show dirt/etc and have a defined depth to them. My summer and AX wheels make the silver rotor stand out more and don't show dirt as well. The black void feeling also makes them appear much deeper than they are.

soulbazz 05-09-2008 01:56 PM

Quick question...so if i'm painting black aftermarket wheels, how much do I need to sand before priming?

I just spent like 7 hours sanding the spokes only, first by hand then with an electric sander using 300-100 grit sandpaper.

Do you need to sand down to the metal before priming? Its not bad getting through the black top coat but sanding through the original primier is a biotch!

I tried using paint remover too and even that is having issues getting through to the metal.
criscross79 05-09-2008 02:01 PM

When your sanding, you don't need to remove the previous color. The new color will cover it up. When I paint wheels I sand enough so the new paint will stick. If you have been going for 7 hours, that should be plenty.

oh :D
but now that I have half the wheel sand down to the metal and half with paint on it, it would probably be wise to sand it all huh? so the paint has a homogeneous surface to adhere to? or is this still overkill

Thanks for the help!

just use some adhesion promoter and I think you will be ok.

The only thing I would be worried about (and it depends on where the paint is and isn't) is any lines that would show up from the painted surface to the non-painted surface. When you put new paint down it will change elevation based on the layer under it, so it may not look smooth if the surface level isn't the same all the way across.

Sweet thanks for the info.
I'll try to smooth everything out, then use that adhesion promoter stuff.

That should take a whole lot less time that what the heck I was doing. I'm going on the second day and I haven't gotten past the "sand" step  I was thinking to myself "how is everyone getting this done in 4-5 hours!!"
Boostinbildo 05-09-2008 07:56 PM

^ 4-5 hours? HA! It took me more than that just to prep my wheels for primer... Take your time man, its worth it.
asaturn 05-21-2008 10:38 AM

just fyi how I did my rims:

my plan was to totally black-out the inside of the rim and get the outside primed enough to promote adhesion. then go over the visible outside with duplicolor GOLD. from the factory, my silver rims were only primed on the inside (but it was grey primer so it sometimes looked like it should be silver) -- this always would get dirty anyway so I figured black will look cleaner.

I cleaned the rims with brillo pads (the kind that have soap in them), cleaned off all the dirt/soap with a power washer, then went over the rims with clean cloths and ether (not sure if this is a bad idea or not -- would've used paint thinner but I didn't have any handy)

I originally bought 2 cans of primer but had to go out and buy another -- 4 would've been a better choice so I could get better coverage, but I wasn't too worried about the inside of the rim (I just wanted it black enough that it'd hide brake dust)

since I was only painting the outside of the rims with gold, I only bought 2 cans of gold. so far this has been enough.

the tires were then masked off with tape (didn't bother with the playing card method) up to the tread (driving on them will wear off any overspray that makes it that far). I also masked off the valve stems.

I cleaned and painted the center caps separately.

did a few coats of gold once the primer dried. so far they look great. I'm at work right now so I'll post pics in a minute once I go home for lunch... I need to wet sand still and then clear coat them and polish them.

update: pics...

some of the paint was runny due to a malfunctioning nozzle -- it was spraying a really strong stream and way too much paint... had to switch it out. (note the crapload of gold paint on the wall) -- hopefully I can wet-sand the runs out.

Ok, well I finally gave this a shot and am really pleased with the results.

As you can see I used Dupli-color Gold, primer sealer, and acrylic enamel.

This is after sanding, but before primer. I used flash cards to block off the tire.

This is the final results. 3 coats of primer, 5 coats of paint, and 4 coats of clear. Im really happy with how they turned out. They are still setting as I speak. Ill put the on late tonight.

I made it... out of 1" wide steel stock from Lowe's

it wobbles a little. need to redo it with pipe instead.

asaturn 06-23-2008 05:57 PM

they look like a slight-green gold to me. but I have a slight color-blindness too. I guess everyone sees colors differently.

they look good. gold is supposed to look like that. otherwise you start getting into the yellow-orange golds (like the gold on brembo calipers and schwinn bikes)

Chris
asaturn 07-04-2008 10:52 PM

NICE

what paint did you use? it looks brighter than duplicolor gold...

PS: way better than the "time attack" thing -- I see that on far too many cars. gold is classic and can never be overdone on a subaru :)
criscross79 07-04-2008 10:54 PM

I used Duplicolor gold with the Duplicolor wheel clear coat.

It is actually a little brighter in person!!

Yeah, thats part of the reason I did the change ... it seemed like everyone and his brother was going with black wheels, so I decided to change it up a bit.

Chris
asaturn 07-04-2008 10:58 PM

weird, maybe your camera is just better... or it looks different on the red car. mine seem dull :( probably just dirty.
criscross79 07-04-2008 11:12 PM

It could be cause your car is black that the wheels might look darker. maybe the paint is just from a different batch :D

Chris

XanRules 07-05-2008 03:52 PM
For anyone who has used the Duplicolor Graphite and used clearcoat, did the clear change the color of the graphite? If so, how?
Clear coat should dry clear ... if the air is too humid, or if you put it on to thick, the clear coat will dry cloudy.

You don't have to. I suppose on brighter colors (pinks, greens whites) it might matter.

I've done it with just the front with gold and flat black and haven't noticed. If your're worried just spray for awhile in the openings of the spokes and the overspray/fog will settle on the inside.
02wrxRally 05-07-2009 04:47 PM

I did mine inside and out....got them used on CL and someone already did a gold spray on the outside, not inside...looked bad and looked like maybe only one uneven coat. My process was bare metal prime inside, prime outside, gold inside, gold outside, clear outside. Took one evening of cleaning/prep, and a saturday of painting

05wrx09 05-12-2009 03:14 PM

Whoops!
I learned the hard way guys, but if you don't mind spending time and money painting your wheels only to have them look this (see below) when they put new tires on then be my guest. If you are just using them as say seasonal winter wheels, that's fine too. But it doesn't matter how much prepping you do, how much cleaning and sanding and priming and coating and clear coating, the tire shop is going to murderalize them. Do I wish I just spent the extra $ and had my wheels powder-coated? Yes, I do. Very much.

it's not just that, it's also the general abuse the places like Discount Tire give these things. Look at my center area. Not the lugnuts, but around that general area there are cracks, chips, and like a spiderweb looking crack crap. I know the pics aren't high quality, but I'm just putting them out there like I said. When I have $400 laying around, I'm going to take them to get sandblasted and powdercoated. Then Discount Tire or whoever can do whatever they want to them and they won't look bad.
