you could probably find some jack stands at walmart for $20. Otherwise 1 wheel at a time will take all day or longer

Did you use a clear coat? I am going to paint my sti wheels black for my silver sti and I can not decide between a flat black or a shiny black.

So I finally am posting some pics of my painted wheels.

Duplicolor Bronze, with clear coat.

don't mountains maake great backdrops! I love where I live :D

They are shod with summer rubber (FK451) and have seen 2 seasons now, with no discernable damage to the paint - it's quite robust. I painted mine when free of tires so they have total coverage. And I only paid $100 for the wheels, which were in perfect condition  almost sad to paint them...almost. I think the bronze looks tits with the Winestone (burgandy).

Just a side note:

Duplicolor is fine if you're painting your wheels a new color and want to save money. However, I would never use Duplicolor on the actual body of the car and especially if you're trying to match the color. It's a shot in the dark at best and the quality is questionable. Just my 2 cents :)

sandblasting isn't nearly important as a good primer for everthing to stick to, i sandblasted the pieces to my billet grills i built before i painted them and didn't use primer, just some krylon and it already started to chip a little (6months), it doesn't really help that the grill area is a war zone on the highway though.
Nicholas Mouyos 01-19-2007 09:36 PM

i will do mine soon, im goin flat black, thanx for the post tho, i was going to try and post a thread for how the best way to do this, but all questions answered....
thanx and the rims look sweet... diggin the polished lip...

Do you think that the same process would apply for aftermarket wheels? I have a set of 18x8 Buddy Clubs that are starting to chip and I want to make them a satin black. do you think I'll need more than one can of paint and clear?

You shouldn't have any problems, I did it to my ADR rims without any problems. I would by 3 cans of paint and 2 of clear.

Duplicolor ftw! I painted my wheels on my Eunos Roadster bronze using it... I also used their clear coat. I tried without it before and the paint wears pretty fast without it

Tried this mod last night. Takes about 2 cans for full coverage on stock wheels. for a thick enouch coating, though, I would reccomend 3-4 cans of paint. also did my 18" buddy clubs. Found out that VHT makes a gloss black that almost perfectly matches the sheen of the tire when they are clean (no tire shine, just clean) took 2 cans, but still need to do some touch-up, so I'm gonna order another can.

schiarelli 07-05-2007 11:31 AM

how long did it take you guys to complete the whole process? i need my car for work every morning (except weekends). should i reserve an entire saturday or sunday, or just one day after work (i get out around 5).

also, i drive a silver 02 wrx wagon, i was thinking graphite, what do you guys think?
criscross79 07-05-2007 11:41 AM

Just to be safe I would just take one day during a weekend .. in my experience ( 4-5 times) It usually takes between 4-6 hours. It all depends on how much of a perfectionist you are, how many coats of paint you apply, and how well you prep the wheels for paint.

Chris
schiarelli 07-05-2007 11:55 AM

ok, just to get it straight...

1. scotch bright pad entire rim and sand down rough spots.
2. clean very well with degreaser
3. dry
4. mask off tires and valve stem
5. paint
6. clear coat

does that sound too simple? many people didnt seem to prime and sand between coats, is this necissary, or does my procedure sound ok?
clbd39 07-05-2007 12:25 PM

i primed and wetsanded just becasue my primer wasn't the smoothest thing because of some overspray and one of my index cards fell over, but that's just me, i doubt you HAVE to, it's personal preference...

stixtasy12 07-08-2007 02:07 AM

has anyone painted their stockers white, thinkin about doing that for my 03 bugeye wagon
schiarelli 07-08-2007 10:55 AM

^^ white on white? if i were you, i would do the graphite color or something like that to contrast. maybe just plain black even, that would look real good. i really like the graphite color, i just painted my wheels graphite, im puttin them on my car today, ill post pics.
transamrocker 07-08-2007 01:18 PM

POWDERCOAT is the way to go for painting rims...even though you do mess up an oven
Norcalrallyist 07-25-2007 08:55 PM

I sprayed the primer on my wheels the other day and they all have a fine dusty sort of grit on them. I knocked that down with some sandpaper and now im wondering should i spray another coat of primer? Also what did I do wrong to get this weird gritty stuff I did 3 coats of primer holding about 5-7 inches from the wheel.
clbd39 07-25-2007 10:02 PM

the overspray from the other wheels kinda made mine gritty lol or maybe not... so i did it when it wasn't windy and it came out perfect! but sanding works as well just get it to something that the paint can stick to! :)

Some primers can be "dusty". Just use a brush and brush it off. You don't need another coat of primer

Do you need a primer to begin with?

I was thinking of sanding it down, cleaning, spraying with 3 coats of flat black, 2 coats of clear...
boozy04 09-07-2007 10:56 AM

i didn't use any primer on mine. just make sure you get them scuffed up real well before you paint.
criscross79 09-07-2007 01:42 PM

besides helping the paint to stick better, primer can also help cover inperfections in the rim, but I have painted with and without and haven't noticed a huge difference either way.

add a little touch to the wheels, by applying red pin stripe (See DYI on RA-R style gril).... i had plenty of tape left, so i use it as a lip...

ghetto? rice? - perhaps... then again it is my auto-x wheels/tires set up that takes a lot of beating and i dont care too much about it:)

How long do you usually need to wait between applying another coat of paint or clearcoat?
kaizoku_jeff 09-14-2007 12:13 PM

been a while since i checked the thread, but those '06+ with painted rims look nasty. shoefan just for clarification (haven't seen any lips on our rim style) how did you go about painting the lip and keep the lines so straight? your black/red combo looks very nice.
criscross79 09-14-2007 12:28 PM
How long do you usually need to wait between applying another coat of paint or clearcoat?
I usually wait about 10 minutes, but it all depends on how thick you appy the paint, humidity, type of paint, etc. I have waited as long as 45 minutes though on a humid day with a thick coat.

Chris

I did my stockers bronze last weekend. Turned out kind of lousy because the friggin wind was killing me. It wasn't windy when I started and then every time I sprayed, it was like gail force winds came through! I'm not sold on the bronze on WRB so I'll probably redo them in graphite or gold.

wait at least 15-20 minuites or else you'll get orange peeling, and you'll have to start all over again, trust me...
