I just want to make sure I don't have any hazing so should I wet sand it? If so what do I polish the plastic with after?
| GFB | 12-29-2011 10:14 AM |
I didn't sand it, how I went about it (albeit inefficient) was to use paint thinner (this WILL cloud the plastic) but then used a buffer pad on my Dremel and plastic polishing compound that I had. I'd advise doing something else, as that all took me...well...a long time.
If you get any hazing, wet sanding may work well. It might be a pain to do inside the stars though.

Yeah I want it to have that nice polished look... Any suggestions on what I can do a practice run on.... I didn't practice on my tail lights on my old civic and ummmm let's just say it didn't end well lol. No way I'll repeat that on new wrx

Could always go to a junkyard and pick up a crap light from somewhere. If you can polish that up, you should be good to go.

Did this on my wife's '04. Used the goof off and probably 200 q-tips.
Ended up having a little crack in it but from more that a foot away it looked great.

I wanted to test before I did it. So I pulled out one of my extra badges today and gave it a shot. Time consuming especially since im a perfectionist but not a single problem. Take your time and do it right. I'll post pics once I get around to doing the emblems on my actual car.

And as for removing the paint I used 600 grit sand paper than a 1000 grit wet sand to smooth it.

I used a hair dryer to loosen up the glue and a very small flat head screw driver with electric tape wrapped around the tip to prevent it from scratching the plastic. Just my 2 cents.
Updated pic of how mine came out:
Matched the badge to the OBS paint scheme on the car (Green/Gold)

I want to do this now lol, though I fear I'd just mess mine up and would only tamper with a spare or just buy one already done. I'd probably pick a black&blue combo.
I also saw a sick ass batman emblem online but that would DEFINITELY be stolen within the week it's put up lol.

I did my front and rear badges silver to match the car (had to paint something so the paint was right there) but I left the stars silver. Kinda thinking black would have been nice, but at the time I was thinking the contrast would be too much. I think it came out good though, and will get a picture to tomorrow, hopefully.

Pretty sure it's an adhesive. I've heard a heat gun at low setting works with a little plastic chisel or softer prying tool but not to do it in front of the wheel for safety reasons.
