How to paint your Subaru badge, both the stars and the background! part 9

BeachZone 07-18-2012 06:47 PM

Post pics when you get that done for sure!

I'll be doing this on my 05 shortly. White/red combo of some sort.
WRXinpa 07-18-2012 07:35 PM
It probably looks near identical to mine...

But unfortunately i think you will have to order a new badge like i am doing. You can't take off the enamel paint.
Lol, why didn't you just see my pic and decide whether or not you'd like that color scheme?

-Beach
Cancel your order if its not too late. I just used some Kleen-Strip environmentally-friendly paint thinner that I got from HD a while ago and it took off the black enamel without impacting the "chrome" surface. Took about 10 minutes. Looks brand new
BeachZone 07-18-2012 08:28 PM

Well i screwed up and sanded the chrome! Haha thanks anyways though

Oompamedic 08-08-2012 05:26 PM

Does anyone have an 09 or newer I wanna pull mine off to repaint front and back but can't figure out how to access the front emblem can someone help
toyotabb 08-08-2012 06:20 PM

Pull the bumper off to get to the back of the grill. Its 6 phillips head plastic screws, 12 plastic push clips.
xlaterdaysx 08-08-2012 06:32 PM

Just for the emblem? I didn't think you had to mess with the bumper. Just pry the emblems carefully
toyotabb 08-08-2012 06:35 PM

That also works but then you risk cracking it. Only takes 6 or less minutes to pull the bumper. That way you can push on the pins from the back to get it off.
mhs5074 08-08-2012 09:28 PM

Yea better play it safe and take the bumper off. Plus, it will be a good learning experience :)
(if you're new to this type of stuff, that is)
BeachZone 08-08-2012 10:10 PM

I agree with taking the bumper then grill off. It's a ton easier to get the emblem off that way and will save you time.

xlaterdaysx 08-08-2012 10:14 PM

I'm glad this came up then, before I go tryin it the other way.
DrDustin 08-08-2012 11:02 PM

I pulled of my emblem without removing the bumper. 2011 wrx. Although it was more pry than pull. The double sided tape they use is very secure and covers the entire back of the emblem so it holds on very well. You also cannot really get fishing line behind it because of the indent in the emblem and the two pegs that stick out the back. See pics in my prior post. I used a flathead screwdriver and putty knife to gradually work it off. You do run the risk of scraping the chrome ring or surrounding paint if you try it this way so use some sort of padding to protect. I'm pretty sure with warm weather and practice anybody could do this in one minute easily and you wouldn't have to worry about all those plastic clips and having an extra pair of hands to help you reinstall your bumper.

Does anyone know where to buy an 03 or 04 emblem that will fit on my 02 front grill?
epistax 09-21-2012 09:53 PM

WRB Badge?
This is a photoshop. I haven't done this.. yet.. and it's not my car...

I like the Subaru badge but it's too muted for me. I'll be getting a dark gray metallic wrx hatch and I was thinking (before even finding this wonderful thread) to try to enhance the emblem with a WRB backdrop. This is my hope / expectation.

Do you think this color / saturation is achievable outside the world of photoshop?
2011prez2.5L 03-31-2013 08:10 PM

I can see it has been a while since anyone posted to this, but what's the best way to get the rear emblem off? Heat and fishing line? Little bit of some solvent? I've got a 2011 2.5i and just got the front off, had to remove bumper. Word to the wise, clean your undercarriage first!!! I paid the price and 2 of the plastic push pieces broke. Regardless it was an experience
toyotanick 06-20-2013 12:43 AM

everyone is doing this to the front badge... but what about the rear? what are you guys doing to match?
I may have missed this earlier.. but is there a trick to keeping the chrome intact?
Yes... just don't remove the background layers where the chrome is located. I used several grits of sand paper to remove the blueish carbonfiber background. No worries because once the badging is removed and you have access to the back you'll notice where the stars are located they are actually inset so you basically can sand down the back to remove the background without harming them. I sanded several grits and finalized with a stage 4 1500 grit.

I did five coats on paint after taping the front off.. then reapplied new 3m auto two way taping just as it was from factory.

Mommymissile_wrx 08-21-2013 11:58 AM

didnt know how simple it was to do this, my badge is starting to crack on the inside hmm got to try it out.
The04of518 03-20-2014 09:19 PM

goof off did slightly haze the emblem so be prepared to wet sand and buff i personally on the second one taped off the front with electrical tape the tape started to dissolve slightly yes but it prevented the front from hazing. I used a toothbrush also worked better than qtips. girlfriend/wife's seems to work best.

Preludicrous 03-21-2014 01:19 PM

The only thing I would suggest for painting the stars (and ring if applicable) is to use a pipette instead of a brush. Just make sure the badge is level to keep the paint from running out of the recessed areas. It makes painting so much easier and lessens any mistake cleanups. I did this for a set of Honda center caps and they came out great.
Wrbboost 03-22-2014 04:15 AM
well im lost, exactly how do you get the front badge off on a 2013 sedan and the rear one off?
For the front I removed the bumper completely then took the grill out and heated it up with a heat gun "blow dryer" and slowly pried it off I didn't bend or break anything so that worked for me...I have not done the rear but I think by heating it up and pushing it out from the inside of the trunk would work or atleast get enough space to get under it

so really there is no reason to take off the bumper you could just take the badge off with it on?

Can you just buy a decent black badge that you can stick on in place of the blue one? I painted the badges on my Toyota, but they are a bit different than the subaru badge. It wouldn't quite work the same.

You probably could, but it won't look very clean. Painting is an easy process, I'd just paint it I were you.

brake cleaner
I haven't read through this whole thread, but a few years ago there was one that used brake cleaner to remove the background paint. I did this on my 07 badges and it worked great. It left the chrome stars intact and rubbed off the blue cf look. They were repainted grey to match my car, but were eventually stolen:furious: I'll try to find that thread-
P43 04-10-2014 01:37 PM

Heres that thread. It's pretty old

2013 STi Badge
I haven't found any any information on painting the badge of a 11+ impreza so i bit the bullet and and did it myself.

Here are my notes...

A little zap of the heat gun and a butter knife took the badge right off

it separates into two pieces

I used Purple Power and brake cleaner to get the paint off. The brake cleaner worked better than the purple power so i ended up using it more often. this process of removing the paint took 1.5 to 2 hours (while watching TV) with the aid of q-tips and little wooden dowels. the badge didnt crap or chip or anything with the purple power / brake cleaner.

You can see the checker board pattern in blue that does not get removed. I had to wet sand this off (water + dish soap + sand paper). Upon sanding it i realized i probably could have sanded the whole thing but that's just how it goes...

After wet sanding and the silver is removed and you can start painting the stars. i did red stars and black background since that is my theme. you can paint outside the lines and not worry about it since you can hit it with the sand paper again once it dries.
