How to paint your Subaru badge, both the stars and the background! part 8

easterbran 03-18-2012 08:59 AM
Has to be like the dumbest "mod" ever. How's it make you guys feel to know people with Honda's paint their badges red. Just sayin, lmao
Haha must not be that "dumb" if you were interested enough to open the thread. Besides, when you have red sti badges and accents all over your car... in addition to red logos on Rally Armors, AND red Hella horns, a blue background looks mismatched. Sorry you feel this way and this is probably because you lack the creativity to even remove the badge. kthxbye

Hah I did an sti front end conversion and it's completely badgeless. But as far as the headliner and door card wrapping. I guess you're right.

working on my "I" badge. I have used finger nail polish, Oops remover, and model paint laquer thinner and still cant get all the paint off. I have rubbed it with cotton balls, cotton swabs etc. Let it soak in the thinner all night. This is just a cheap ebay i badge but they really put the paint to it.

I tried Oops with no luck, ran to the hardware store, picked up some Goof Off, and it got the paint off after about an hour of scrubbing with qtips and toothpicks

I want to put something there besides the star like a letter or something would you recommend sanding it to get the stars shape out and then just trying to hand paint it or if you said will it look all scratched up.!?

I didn't know the stars were grooved into the plastic I thought it was a plate or something you could just pop out instead of having to scrape off :(

I don't think that would be possible without doing a LOT of sanding, but you could try it. The stars are pretty deeply grooved into the plastic. Let us know how it goes.

Thanks. Was just some Tamiya modeling/hobby paint. I've had it on for about 2 months and no wear

Finally took my emblems off to paint. FYI there are two small pegs coming out the back of the emblems which make using fishing line a little difficult. I ended up just prying off both the front and rear emblems while trying not to scratch up the surrounding paint. As you can see in the first pic, there is a lot of sticky goo all over the back. I mostly used sandpaper to remove the blue. Then did very fine grit sandpaper followed by meguiars plastic cleaner and polish to get rid off all the scratches. Used a duplicolor metallic red paint on the back. Took lots of coats and some brush marks are barely visible. I think I might try spraypaint if I had to do it again just so it would be more even.

Agreed, recoloring the stars looks awesome, but after working the paint off the back of my first badge with tons of graffiti paint remover and seeing how the stars were completely impenetrable I just did the background. For my second time through i just sanded the paint off since i new the paint remover wasn't really going to help much. I think leaving the chrome stars is alright and goes with the chrome ring around the emblem that you will have. For whoever has the chemicals and maybe some advanced dental picks and patience to clean out the stars it should be sweet but I think most people should plan on just changing background color and keeping the chrome stars.

You can order OEM replacement emblems and try it out yourself before tearing off your own. They are a little expensive though and be warned that they come with preinstalled industrial double sided tape on them so you would need to scrape that off first and then work on removing the coloring from the back.

Bingo! Came out Perfect!! Gloss black backround.

Paint used = Krylon Fusion gloss black

I just put the emblem back in the chrome ring to take a pic and see how it would look.... Going to paint the chrome ring matte black in a minute. I'll get pics up asap.
Will be using Matte Black wheel paint for the chrome ring after I prime it with Valspar plastic primer!

So you guys seem to be the experts on this... Bought my car like this.
Well on mine (05 Sti), the chrome is just an indentation when you are looking at the back of the badge after taking it apart. So on mine that could definitely happen if someone started scraping off the chrome.
DrDustin 07-12-2012 11:05 PM

^ agree. Mine is 2011. You could scrape only the chrome portion, although it too is coated on the backside with blue paint that you would never see until taking it off. We are assuming your car was bought used? It seems odd though that they would just scrape part of the emblem and then put it back on without actually changing any colors. To reach into that indentation it would need to be off the car.
DrDustin 07-12-2012 11:11 PM

To more specifically answer the question... that does not seem normal at all and I don't think it would ever naturally happen after seeing how difficult it is to get through the coating on the back. The blue checked pattern is quite thick and I don't see how any normal weathering would affect it. Since it is also covering the chrome on the back I would say this injury is inconceivable without someone pulling off the emblem with an ice pick.
easterbran 07-12-2012 11:13 PM

I did notice a few scratches here and there on the chrome part of my badge when I was repainting it, though I bought my sti very used, so it may just be wear and tear...somehow.
chet24 07-12-2012 11:39 PM

I bought the car with only 20k miles, and the guy had not touched a thing in his car, and he was a big goober. I doubted he would try to change it, so I was just curious. I have a few other projects to finish up, and then it will be a repaint. I think I'll do white stars, and a further designated background color...

I have an '07 and the chrome is "flaking" off both the front and rear badges. I know a couple other folks experiencing the same issue. It's really strange seeing as how it does this with the emblem is all sealed up.

I guess it's incentive to pull it off and repaint it!
easterbran 07-17-2012 03:30 PM

I was thinking that maybe when the emblem heats up a lot on a hot day the chrome paint may not hold up so well and begin deteriorating?

The badge is from the trunk of my '11 Sti. I posted these badge removal instructions in another thread to help another member, maybe they will help you aswell....

1. Heat up thoroughly with either heat gun or hair dryer. I used heat gun.
2. Take fishing line and cut through all the adhesive you can get to from behind the badge using a saw-type cutting motion.
3. Take an old credit card and slide it behind the badge using the corner of the card to cut more and more adhesive. Eventually you will be able cut through to the bottom of the badge from top center. The card is slim enough to fit between the pins you speak of.
4. Lastly I removed the adhesive left behind with "goof off". I do not recommend this though. Try at your own risk. It didn't harm my paint but just because it didn't doesn't mean it won't harm yours.
5. Done deal, move on to next mod.

I was going to remove the chrome stars but after hearing How much work it is to get the paint off, i decided it wasn't worth the time right now considering how much work i already have on my plate at the moment. Also what some people don't know is that when you remove the chrome you get rid of the "3D" look that the chrome has originally since it's reflective. I'm not really a fan of that personally. I'm going to be ordering a new chrome ring, i don't like the look of matte black and gloss black with the ugly chrome stars that don't blend.

I kept the rear (hatch) emblem ring as chrome. Painted the background black. That one looks great.

As for the front, I'm going to throw some clear coat on the ring so that its shiny finish matches the surrounding shiny plastic piece of the front grill. Then, I think it will look good with the painted ring.
