The "rim dudes" probably don't care about your paint job. unless you powdercoat or bake your paint on, it will chip with wear/abuse.
and you probably used very thin coats of paint .... the thicker the coat, the shinier it will be. thin coats tend to be fairly flat.
been a while since i checked the thread, but those '06+ with painted rims look nasty. shoefan just for clarification (haven't seen any lips on our rim style) how did you go about painting the lip and keep the lines so straight? your black/red combo looks very nice.
thanks for the complament jeff!!
To do the lip which we dont have, after the rim is painted and dried i went around the outer edge with painters tape like this

You have to go slow to get it right but its easy and looks great. After you have the lip taped off I layed a newspaper on top of the rim and taped off the exposed area and sprayed the red. After about 10 light coats and completely dry I took the tape off and clearcoated. Hope I answered your question!

Painted mine... looks great.
if you look close you can see some small dust - it was a little windy, but overall i am really satisfied. It was a beautiful day, i sat outside in my lazy chair and read... would get up every 20-30 min to apply additional coat. Pretty easy job, i think the most PITA is taping off the tires... otherwise shake point spray.

Okay, I painted my rims last weekend. I went threw these steps. and i think something went wrong
STEPS:
degreased w/ purple power
washed rims
wiped down rims
500grit sandpaper wet sanded
washed off
let dry
used index cards between tire and rim
2 cans of sandable primer
sanded with 500 grit wet sand paper
washed off dried
3 cans of 500* engine enamel semi-gloss black
2 cans of 500* engine enamel clear coat
My rims came out kind of dusty and the rims aren't "glossy" at all its more of a "matte" color. Help?
also, i have this white kind of dust coming off the rims this is my first time doing rims, or spray painting as a matter of fact. Anyone know what i did wrong? I have very even coats when i look at it, its just the rims are dusted and this black dust comes off? Thanks help is always appreciated!

The thicker your coats, the shinier it will be. So if you did a lot of thin coats it will probably be fairly flat looking.
I have noticed in my previous experience that when I have used engine enamel paint it does seem to be "dusty". As you spray, a lot of paint gets in the air and when it settles it leaves a layer of fine dust. In fact when I painted in my garage it left the floor black and I was actually able to sweep it out later. your best bet is that when your done painting you put the wheels in the open air to dry, and that should minimize how much dust settle on them. The wheels will also be shiner. Try taking a wet sponge/paper towel or something and try and wipe them down. A car wash might work as well.
Hope this helps
Chris

here's some pictures from my day of car work:

(didn't actually do anything on the interior just had my lights set up and stuck them inside for some cool pictures.)

(installed fender braces, you need to have the front off the ground and since i was painting wheels, why not just take it up a notch.)

(and here's the painting as it's drying. stay tuned for on-car pics.)
note, i also glued the crap out of my lip so it will stay on.
the fender braces are AWESOME and a huge improvement in front end feel and turning/steering response.
thanks micah for the warm garage!
btw everyone, i'm not new to this so i didn't do a writeup or anything. i probably did 8-10 coats of dap gold, then an overcoat of rustoleum(which is less reflective) gold, then two or three coats of duplicolor clear wheel coat. i have painted my wheels three times now. stock>bronze, sold, white>gunmetal>gold fresh!

Just FYI I decided to use the duplicolor paint and duplicolor wheel coating on one wheel and had the tire mounted after painting. I thought id give it a try just to see what would happen. Basically the paint survived the mounting but I got 3-4 chips that I will have to repair and im sure every time I get new tires I will have to repair double the amount of chips.

Keep the thin even coats. You're spraying too far away. The paint is drying before it hits the paint. They won't be glossy because you're not using gloss black. And skip the clear coat. It doesn't make sense to clear a semi-gloss unless you can find a true semi-flat clear. Clear is a can sucks anyway.

Okay I'm inspired. This might be a dumb question but:
Are any of you guys/gals painting the rims while on the car? If so, are you worrying about the insides of the rim getting painted?
Otherwise, whats the best way to prop the car up without any rims on it?
4 jackstands? I know the recommended lifting points for the stock jack arent ideal for jackstands so where would place them?
Thanks all,
Matt

^^^ I advise not painting them on the car! Will only end up bad. Just put the car up on four jackstands at the mounting points shown in the user manual.
Make sure you give the paint enough time to cure. Plan on them being down for two days. I gave mine 7 days to fully cure and then I waxed the clear before installation.
Preperation and patient are key from what I've found. It has worked out to be 1 can of color and 1 can of clar per wheel in my case, but i did multiple coats inside and out.

Okay yah doing on the car is only appropriate if you have a bucket car or truck. Thanks for the advice on teh jackstand points.
Damn 2 days and 4 cans of paint and 4 of clear???? I was guessing 1 day and 2 cans paint, 1 can clear from the impressions i;ve been getting on here. Thanks a lot for the input.

Actually, you could probably get away with what you're thinking, but I am an uber perfectionist. I spent a lot of time on every step and made sure every wheel was coated perfectly. It will probably be too much in the end. We'll see. (Haven't put them on the car yet.)

Ok guys heres mine. I posted in the other wheel thread, but might as well here too. I did mine the end of this past summer while my summer Prodrive wheels were still on. I needed new tires, so I was able to do my wheels with no tires on them. I used engine degreaser and steel wool for about an hour per wheel, 2 cans of duplicolor black paint, and 2 cans of duplicolor clear. When I do my prodrives this spring, I think I'll use 3 cans of each... O and I painted my brakes myself too.

Actually, I went to home depot:lol: I read here on nasioc that the rustoleum aluminum color was a near perfect match, so I went with it. It's not perfect, but as you can see from the pics it very close. Cose enough for me, since it cost me $25, and I plan on buying the sti skirts when I save enough subarubucks anyways. I had no problem what-so-ever painting the 1991 SS wheels I had, however, my WRX wheels WILL NOT be painted. I'm going to have to powder coat them, paint simply will not stick, no matter how much sanding or cleaning I do on them. In fact, even primer won't stick on them, it just bubbles off. >_< I've basically ruined a wheel at this point.
The tires are toast, so I'm going to have them dismounted and recycled, the valve stems removed, and cooked in an oven to get the paint residue and other crap off.

Not exactly stock wheels, but I painted my autocross rims. I wanted to do something a little cheesy, a little dumb, and a lot fun. :) No pics of the finished product yet. I untaped one of them yesterday and it came out great! Just need to add the enamel clearcoat.

Yes, it's going on WRB. My calipers are red(ish), my AX numbers are red, I have the red grill stripe. It's kinda like the gumball cars that are gray with pink wheels, white with blue wheels, blue with orange wheels. Just something to have a little fun during AX.

Make sure you set up a nice paint booth so no dust or debris get on the wheels.

How it sits now. I painted them around this time last year and there starting to get kinda scuffed. So do i stick with the same theme or go for a new color?

What it looked like the day i did them.

^^^I have that same combo with my stockers. Graphite/gunmetal on WRB. I think a dark metallic gold would look better.
