niiiiiice my weekend project!!!! NICE WRITE UP
icehockey101 11-11-2008 08:33 AM

Does this work with older imprezas, like a 93, or is it for the more recent models... How much does something like this cost?
Jncominco2 12-08-2008 10:46 PM

ordered 3 of the matrix LED bulbs and 3 bases
hopefully it will turn out nice :)
will post pics when i get them and get it installed (going to try and put the other one in the boost gauge.... betting it wont work, but oh well)
Jncominco2 12-13-2008 10:08 PM

NOTE: just a warning, the matrix bulbs fried my HVAC circuit board
others have used them just fine...just a thought
ya, that didnt work out. fried my circuit board. thanks whoever said that

so i got a new hvac, and heres the results
dipped the bulbs in scratch fix paint

the pics may be deceiving but are the lights dimmer than before? I can't imagine they would be the same brightness. Did you replace bulbs?
Jncominco2 12-13-2008 11:02 PM

ya, they are a tiny bit dimmer because theres a layer of paint on it
i really want to do LEDs of some sort, but i tried what someone said before and messed up the circuit board in the back, so i dunno
and yea i got new bulbs for it
Jncominco2 12-13-2008 11:31 PM

dont know if anyone can answer this, but if i ordered from superbrightleds.com, do i want the
T1.5-x Instrument LED bulb
or
NeoWedge Instrument LED bulb
or
74-x Wedge Base LED bulb
or what

for gauge cluster and hvac
i tried some LED's someone else said and it didnt work out so well..will one of those work just by swapping it?
PrimeSTI 12-18-2008 09:44 PM

I didn't use that matrix bulbs, so I couldn't comment on that. But I used the high power red LED's from superbrightleds (the ones with 3 high powered LEDs facing all directions) and it worked out perfectly. Same result as your HVAC, but no frying on the circuit board. I highly doubt a LED can fry your circuit board unless you somehow managed to short circuit some of the wires in the circuit board. In my HVAC board, there are tons of dielectric grease to prevent such thing.
Espresso 12-20-2008 12:32 PM

ok i put it all back together.

je255j 02-06-2009 05:34 PM

Great info in this thread! Unfortunately, none of it is regards to the '08-'09 Impreza 2.5i or Outback Sport. I'm trying really hard to learn how to change the colors of the instruments and HVAC, but I haven't been able to locate any information yet.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.
d0ugch0i 02-06-2009 05:49 PM

im so confused....
what size bulb and how many do i need
for the hvac, temp gauge, radio
for the gauge cluster, boost gauge??
BigEag205 02-08-2009 08:58 PM

do the bulb covers go over the green rubber thats already on the bulbs or do you cut that green rubber off and just slide the covers on? i cant get myu green ones pulled off
nation1979 02-09-2009 02:41 AM

what size led for a 06 sti hvac?im looking for pics of people who have had good luck matching their gauge color in the hvac controls.i order from superbrightleds all the time, just need to know what to order
d0ugch0i 02-21-2009 01:19 PM

any answer yet??
WRXDilettante 03-06-2009 09:35 PM

This doesn't work on the '06-'07 WRX HVAC. They changed to surface mount LEDs. Each knob has 3 white and 1 orange. The plastic that the knobs are made of is actually tinted green with silver/grey paint on the face. Even if I change the white LEDs I doubt I'll end up with the color I want. Any ideas?
d0ugch0i 03-24-2009 08:37 PM

guess no help....really wanted to do this.
guess no help....really wanted to do this.
i ended up using red model paint on the radio. looks really good, and i will be switching the gauges to red paint also. havent mustered up the gall to wire LED's in the HVAC yet. but for your car, you can probably paint them too.
je255j 05-28-2009 02:30 AM

The HVAC controls on the '08-? Impreza, I just disassembled, and it turns out they are illuminated by two tiny white light bulbs - which is to say, not LEDs, so they have a slight yellowish tint. The light from these two bulbs is spread out via a translucent piece of specifically curved red plastic, and then the backs of the HVAC dials are also painted red.

So, if I want to make these any color other than red (and I do), I'd have to remove that red paint first. This can be done with a Q-tip and nail polish remover, correct?

Then I'd have to discard that red plastic piece, which will unfortunately cause the light to be spread non-uniformly, and that's sort of a bummer, but not necessarily a deal-breaker. I mean, what else am I going to do? It isn't like I can just make another one of those made out of clear plastic.

And, lastly (almost), I'd have to replace those two white bulbs with LEDs. That's probably the only easy part of the entire process, and even it won't be that easy, as I didn't see how to even remove those. They should screw out easily enough, if I could expose the back of them.

How does one remove a HVAC control panel from a car, any car, with those metal cables attached to it? It seems pretty tightly tethered in place.

Finally, though it's really not important, I'd also love to replace (or have replaced for me, rather) the red LED for the AC on/off button, and that's soldered to that circuit board. That light totally should've been blue, and I truly have no idea why it's not.

Sigh.

It looks like getting rid of all this red lighting (which I really want to do!) might not be possible. :( Or, at least, it sure as hell won't be cheap.

Alright, I've been reading several threads, but I can't seem to get a 100% confirm. What exactly are the bulb sizes I am looking for?

HVAC: ?
Gauge Cluster: ?
Keyring: ?

hadi10 08-18-2010 08:20 PM

i have done this mod to my 07 over a year now.. done it all by myself.. the hvac , the windows switches , replaced my cluster with an sti one..basically everything is converted into red...:) and it looks awesome..
you just need some soldering skills for the hvac
tahoebru 08-19-2010 01:46 AM

It seems that Parts Express no longer stocks the red bulb covers, but I found another resource, Electronics Plus.

However, they list the covers as .125" inside diameter (1/8") x .187" outside diameter (3/16")

Are these the same as the covers that you've used? They also list ones with a .125" outside diameter.

Just want to make sure to order the correct size so any help will be appreciated!

hey have you done the clock conversion yet? send me the link if you have
brianglawson 09-23-2010 10:19 AM

So in order to do just my HVAC, my OEM Boost Gauge, and My Key ring, i would need about 8 .2 covers?

What about the window switches??
Legend STI 12-10-2010 10:59 PM

anyone know where to get the red codom light covers from? Parts express no longer carries them.
quicksubie 12-10-2010 11:47 PM

Autolumination.com sells led bulbs that have up to 5 LEDs a bulb on them if you go to the site then scroll down look for the #74 bulbs click there those should fit they are wedge style bulbs.

I know this cus I changed my gauge cluster with them :-) (in my 05 Wrx)
Fat Black Pig Sac 12-10-2010 11:59 PM

how to replave HVAC color on 05 WRX?
quicksubie 12-11-2010 12:27 AM

^^^ sorry

Take hvac controls out, locate bulbs, fig out how many it takes I'm going to guess two or three. Go to autolumination.com scroll down look for #74 click then buy the color and how many LEDs per bulb you want. Wait for shipping then install, sit back and enjoy your new colored hvac controls
Fat Black Pig Sac 12-11-2010 01:28 AM

05 model has different type of bulbs, they are really small with 4 connectors and require precize soldering
quicksubie 12-11-2010 11:18 AM

^^ for what part the hvac?
inszelesta 01-03-2011 11:25 PM

Thanks for the idea will try
jma_1000 01-06-2011 02:48 AM

i just re-did my gauge cluster the other day and took all the red condoms out. they didnt look very good, anyways. i cleaned up all the green and black filament coating with nail polish remover and sandpaper, then used a salmon red stage gel. you can find them at any stage lighting/equipment place. it looks infinitely better than before, and the color is clean.

I just did mine because they were missing ordered from autolumination.com got 5 bulbs with holders and already had red bulb condoms on them, for $13.47 shipped. They look like the stock piece,10mmx3/8 19mm tall.Fit perfect look very good. And only took like 3 days to get.
cam07 07-17-2011 08:34 PM

Great info! I wasn't sure how to get those bulbs out and I really didnt want to break them. Question tho, the light in the ring around the 12v plug is a smaller led compared to the regular bulbs. Obviously you can buy the regular bulb covers anywhere, but where can I pick up those smaller bulb covers that fit that light??
ThatMichiganSubaru 07-26-2011 06:54 PM

Can anyone link me to a site for replacement LEDs for the radio bulbs? Really dont want to mess it up.
Adema2626 09-04-2011 06:30 PM

Just Changed my Cluster
I just got done changing out my gauge cluster to red. Just some additional info I want to add. Taking off the film takes a LONG time, so be prepared and be patient. Also, instead of using condoms, I replaced all the bulbs with LEDs. I purchased them though superbrightleds.com. I ordered the highest quality which was 74 HP3, and when they came in I thought they were the wrong ones because they didnt look like bulbs. If you choose this route, please know that the HP3 fits the same way as the bulb, it just looks way different. By the way, I have a 02 WRX so if anyone is looking for the exact size of the bulb it is 74. The websites wont show replacement bulbs for the instrument gauges, but it is the same size as the specifications for the ash tray bulb. Hit me up if you have any questions.
polish steve 01-26-2012 03:29 PM

Where can i get the red bulb condoms? The links in the original wright up seems to link to a new bulb with a wire. That is not what i want correct. Here's the link i get.

Nevermind. I'm going LED's from wrxman's link. Seems the best option.
iyzmi 02-21-2012 02:12 AM

Is there any soldering involved with changing the 02-04 style hvac bulbs to blue LED bulbs or do they plug right into the socket?
XanRules 02-21-2012 02:29 AM
Is there any soldering involved with changing the 02-04 style hvac bulbs to blue LED bulbs or do they plug right into the socket?
Depends on the bulbs.
I used Autolumination SMD towers and they plugged right in.

Ordering the 74 HP3 for the cluster now. But you're saying the "bulb" size is different for the HVAC controls? What would I need to purchase for that? I was under the impression that the HVAC controls were also a size 74 bulb.
