Procedure:
Remove the plastic bezel surrounding the radio, pry at the cupholder edge of the bezel, slip your fingers under there and loosen the 6 clips that hold it in place:

Remove the 6 philips screws holding the radio in place, there are two that are far back at the bottom, use the long shafted screwdriver for this:

Slide out the stereo and pull off the black wire on the right side of the stereo, followed by the white harness and then the antenna, this is where the thin philips screwdriver may come in handy to press down the tab holding on the white wiring harness.

Now the radio is out and you got a pretty gaping hole so now you can look towards the HVAC.

This is the hardest part to explain, there are two little bulbs that are screwed in behind the HVAC, just below the AC and defroster buttons, reach your hand behind the unit and unscrew them, righty tighty applies. This is the best way to do it, so try hard; its much harder to disconnect the cables and wires leading off the HVAC. Then slip new bulb covers on them and put them back in

This is that the bulbs look like unscrewed with the new covers on:

Now that you've finished the HVAC, back to the radio portion, put it on a nice clean table at home, so you dont lose any scews. Take off the four screws holding each of the side panels on.

When you have done thas pry off the 8 black tabs holding the stereo face on:

Pinch the volume and skip/search button and pull them off

Now this is the part you should relax and be careful, we're dealing with lots of small electronic circuits so be gentle. Look at the back of the face part of the radio, it should look something like the picture below, there are 6 little red philips screws that hold the board onto the plastic trim, take them off, and lift out the green board.

See all those little red dots on the picture below? They are the original green lamp coveres(will actually be green on a normal radio), take those off and slip one or two lamp covers over each one. You know your a neat freak when your table looks like this:

Now you are going to have to deal with the screen, this is tricky if you dont know what you are doing, so pay attention. On the back of the board there are 4 little tabs (circled blue) that are bent sideways to hold the screen surround in place, bend them with your fingers or pliers so they look like and they can slip through the slot in the board. Look carefully at the part thats circled red, thats solder, make sure you identify properly before melting it, it should be a little clip coming off of the screen surround that goes through the board. Heat up your soldering iron and hold it to that red circled part, make certain you touch nothing else with the iron, while the solder is liquefied slide the metal screens surround off of the circuit board.

You will see two more lamps under there, pull off the old lamp covers and put on your new ones.

Reheat the solder and slide the screen surround back in place.

Bend back the little tabs (blue circles).

Finish off by re-installing in reverse order.
Note: This may sometimes take more than one bulb cover to get the desired color, on a side note, I tried blue using the lamp cover method, it came out a little too teal for my liking, the red color spectrum works far better.

Thats pretty nice, I cant believe I missed that. Nice shots of the back of the HVAC, gotta give the guy some props. Then again I thaught I'd do the whole deal, and maybe encourage some people to be brave enough to do their clusters. I wish I saw that sticky before I did it :furious: but I tried... :(
For the record the color is ALOT more red and darker, crappy camera and daytime pics...

i have a question. for just the hvac its 2 .2 condom covers? and key chain 1 .2 condom cover?
| Trunk_Monkey | 01-03-2005 04:23 PM |
I think I "double bagged" everything (see note at bottom of original post), there are 2 bulbs in the HVAC and 1 for the key ring, both are (.2) Click on the links in the "what you need section" at the top. Remember you need more for the radio and those are (.12)

I already have an aftermarket deck, so it should be much easier for me to do just the HAVC. You listed the condoms needed for the head unit and the HAVC. I need to know the condoms for just the HAVC. Thanks...
| Trunk_Monkey | 03-25-2005 09:42 AM |
Sent you PM, edited it into the "parts needed", and I'll tell you here: its 2 (.2), you'll probably just get em as a 10 pack. Im 99% sure on this, its been a while so when you do it get back to me so I can be sure.

OK, I just recently got a new headunit which is blue, so I want to change the AC controls to blue - my question is, if I JUST want to do the AC colors, what size condom do I get. Do I get the .12 or the .2 and how many?? Thanks a million !!
| Trunk_Monkey | 03-31-2005 04:08 PM |
Its 2 (.2)'s, remember blue condoms come out teal, if you are ok with that go ahead, if not find out some more info on LED's, I have never used them so sorry I cant be of much help.
| antidote11 | 03-31-2005 04:59 PM |
Cool, thanks man, I just ordered 20 of the blue. :D
I just wanna do the Key Ring and the AC controls, so that should be plenty.
I figure I can double them up and have them look bluer
or I can cut a peice of deep blue lighting film and place that around the bulb, then put the condom on and see if that gives me a nice blue color. If not, then I will go with the red. Thanks again !! :D

I have a diffrent radio. It's half the face size and just does CD and radio. I figure it would be basically he same on the inside but has anyone tried it? I'd like to know it can be done before I go cracking it open. If I get no replies by next weekend I'll dig in and try to get some pictures up.

Like I said, blue comes out teal, even "double bagged". The lighting film might help, the problem however is that the incancedent light emits naturally weird hues. I was set on blue, tried it, but then went to red.

I think this will be harder with an aftermarket radio, post pics of the faceplate, some things like LCD readouts color can never be changed.

The stock radio has a B&W LCD, just lit up by bulbs, some radios have sort of an indoglo in the LCD's which you cant change. Carefullly take it apart and see.

HVAC is do-able, click on the links at the top for where to get them, they should be the same sizes. As for the stereo i think the main LCD part will stay green, looking for some info from the new-gen guys too.

When I did this a few years ago, I did the whole car with blue led's. I then changed the button areas on the radio to yellow leds. So now the guages are backlit blue with yellow needles, and the radio lcd is blue with yellow buttons.
I also designed a boost guage to fit in the Subaru din pocket that fits where the clock goes. This was blue 7 segment led too.

i just tried..... no go for me!
it seems that the green color is from the actual faceplate of each button. the faceplate button that lights up green is actually green painted over with grey. unless theres a way to clear colored plastic then im outta ideas. but besides that popping everything off wasnt so bad. pretty self explainatory.. the LED that lights up the buttons are clear
**edit**
second thought.... assuming the STI's are put together the same way i dont know why we cant just get the buttons from an sti pop them in and call it a day?
any takers?

No real way to do it except replace the clock, some have tried painting the screen with glass stain but its real dark.

RE: Clock
Sadly my poor suby's in the shop or I'd have looked at this already: is the green the result only of the glass being grteen, or is the display actually glowing green too? if it's just the glass, why have none of us tried replacing it with a new piece of glass in the color we want?
The basic solution I have in mind consists of going to Home Depot and buying a sheet of plexi ~ as thick as the glass and sandwiching theatrical gel between two pieces, or simply gluing a piece to the back side of one piece about as thick as the glass. cut to fit as necessary and you have an instant pane in the polor you want without dealing with the old stuff being green.
I'm hoping to try this step first this weekend, when I have my baby back.
And thank you Trunk_Monkey for all of these write-ups, I'm hoping to use them soon.

If you really dont plan on replacing that clock with some guages you can buy an evo clock and put it in there. One guy did even did a mod that showed temp and time so its doable.

I just did this mod on 03 and 04 WRX and just wanted to let everyone know that if you arent comfortable with your soldering skills, its not neccessary to melt the solder and completely remove the metal frame around the display panel on the stereo. One can just straighten out the tabs as described and pull the frame off and bend it down to access the bulbs. Then just push it back up and onto the display panel.

Well the website that trunkmonkey gives at the beginning has been sold out of red bulb covers for the last 2 months. And they were supposed to be in stock as of 3/31/06. But now they are out of stock until like 4/20 or something. Is there any place that sells .2" red bulb covers because i can't find any?

I think I saw another write up that someone used replacement red LEDs. Anyone have a link?
