Just a heads up....
JPM will be making his race debut in a stock car next week, October 6th, in the ARCA/ReMax Food World 250 at Talledega. He'll be in the No. 4 Texaco/Havoline Dodge.
Speed will air the race delayed on Oct 6th, at 5:00 Pacific.
Should be interesting to say the least.

I was just thinking the other day that I hadn't really heard anything at all about what he was doing since he ditched F1. I figured he would immediately start running in some of the lower stock car series to start getting some seat time before jumping right into Nextel Cup.
It'll be interesting to see how things go this weekend.

McLaren only recently decided to allow him to start testing stock cars. He was still under contract, even though he wasn't driving during the race weekend.

Gerhart Edges Montoya for Pork Pole at Talladega
TALLADEGA AL (10-5-06) - ARCA RE/MAX Series veteran Bobby Gerhart is known as the Restrictor Plate King for good reason. The Pennsylvania native is the 2001 ARCA RE/MAX Series Talladega race winner, and has won at Daytona International Speedway four times (1999, 2002, 2005, 2006). Gerhart showed off his superspeedway prowess Thursday afternoon at Talladega, where he claimed his third career Talladega Pork Pole and ninth overall with a speed of 189.485 mph (50.537 seconds) around the 2.66-mile superspeedway. He sits on the Pork Pole for Fridays Food World 250 ARCA RE/MAX Series race alongside Juan Pablo Montoya.
We came here and tested a few weeks ago and the track was a lot faster than I expected it would be so we actually went back to the shop and decided to bring a whole different car here this weekend, said Gerhart. Talladega did a beautiful job with the repaving job. Its really an honor just to be here.
Formula 1 veteran Montoya, who has entered this weekends ARCA RE/MAX Series race to help make the transition from open wheel cars to stock cars, qualified second in a No. 4 Texaco-Havoline Dodge for Chip Ganassi Racing. Montoya, with an average speed of 189.451 mph, missed the pole by one, one-hundredth of a second.
Matt Hagans, Frank Kimmel and AJ Henriksen rounded out the top-five.
The ARCA RE/MAX Series will hold a final practice session on Friday from 9-10 a.m. Limited impound procedures will be in place for the one-hour practice session in which teams can only make a limited number of pre-approved adjustments. The Food World 250 is slated to roll off at 4:30 p.m. local central time. The race will be aired same-day on SPEED beginning at 8 p.m. Eastern.

Montoya finishes third at Talladega
By Diego Mejia Saturday, October 7th 2006, 00:11 GMT
Juan Pablo Montoya had a successful stock car debut today in the ARCA RE/MAX Food World 250 at Talladega Superspeedway.
The former Formula One driver finished third in an eventful race, which was red flagged after a multiple-car incident with 16 laps to go.
Montoya led the first 12 laps of the race but then was involved in an incident with drivers Brian Sillas, Doug Reid and Chad Miller, which forced him to pit twice under yellow and put him down to 31st.
The colombian put the No. 4 Texaco-Havoline Dodge up to second with 23 laps to go and was in the draft of race leader Steve Wallace when both were overtaken by series-leader Frank Kimmel with less than 20 laps to the end.
With 16 to go, six cars were involved in a huge crash, causing the fifth and final caution of the race, as the race was later red flagged.
Montoya was all smiles at the end of the race. "I've never had so much fun in my life," he said. "I'm not saying F1 is bad or anything. I think it's great racing as well.
"Initially I was a little bit careful. I was staying low just to get comfortable. Then we fell back."
Montoya looked strong until he got caught up in another car's crash and fell back.
"They came straight at me, and I was pretty lucky. The car went one way and the other and for some reason the car didn't spin. I was pretty pleased with that.
"The cars are unbelievable, but I haven't had this much fun in a long time. I passed probably 40 cars today easily. It's outrageous."

This is why I think everyone is wrong when they say he will get bored with NASCAR...
OK, but why would stock car racing be any different for our friend, Johnny Paul Montoya?
Why would he not became disinterested, or dissappointed, as he has w/everything else he has ran... From what we have seen previously, one could expect that after 2 to 5 seasons (depending how well he succeeds) of bouncing around & turning left in these 4,000lb tin tops, he'll become disinterested, and move off again...
It's the same driver, w/the same strengths and weaknesses, in yet another temporary stage of his career...
How long after an on-track disagreement over real-estate do we see this well known side Johnny Paul? I'm predicting sometime during his 2nd season... and it won't happen only once.
There is a strange, somewhat hierarchical, social dynamic that exists between stock car drivers. The hierarchy is not based completely on talent, or performance. But that social dynamic exists on the track, and can be critical to a stock car drivers success.
So Johnny Paul is happy now, but but his history indicates it may well be different after 2 or 3 seasons...

Juan Pablo loves racing. He didn't find himself racing in F1 and thus quit. He never made statements like this when he first tested an F1 car or when he went their full time. I expect him to do a few of the Grand Am or ALMS races too though. He's only quit one series so I don't see where you can correlate his previous history to stock carracing.

Not really sure where you're getting this idea that JPM gets bored after a few years...
As Stu said, the only series he's ever walked away from is F1, and that was after six seasons.
Watching JPM yesterday was like watching him during his first year in CART. You could almost see him climbing the learning curve as the laps went by. My favorite part was when he bump drafted his "friend" into the lead. HOnestly he looked like he'd been racing stock cars forever.
JPM will do just fine in NASCAR and I for one very much look forward to watching him next season. :D

i can see why he's having fun. i think passing is probably the best feeling you get for being a driver. winning is an accomplishment, but passing is an instant thrill when you know you are faster than the person you passed. and how many passes did JPM make in an average F1 season? less than 40?

It was entertaining to watch. I'm glad I recorded it so I could fast forward through the yellows, as well. They were *way* too long. It was also enjoyable, because the whole race seemed to focus on JPM. Even when he was back in the pack, he was center screen. That won't last long.
I found myself encouraging him to get closer to the guys in front. He was leaving bigger gaps than most drivers, since he is less used to drafting that close. Then he got plenty close at the end. That was pretty funny.
And the interviews before and after were the same delightful JPM I've always enjoyed seeing. He really seemed to be having a blast out there! He was grinnin ear to ear, and talking a mile a minute. I had a big ol' grin on my face just watching.
Who knows how long it will be fun for him and us, but I'm planning on watching more, which is more than can be said about me watching any other stock car race.

By Diego Mejia Monday, October 9th 2006, 01:06 GMT
Juan Pablo Montoya will continue his stock car learning process next weekend in the ARCA RE/MAX Series final round, which will take place at Iowa Speedway.
Montoya successfully made his debut in the series last Friday, qualifying on the front row and finishing third on a shortened race at Talladega.
The Colombian has already tested in September at Iowa Speedway, which was designed and is owned by former NASCAR Cup champion Rusty Wallace.
"Iowa Speedway is a tough track and will be a real test for me," Montoya said. "The hardest thing for me during the test was the braking. I got up to speed pretty quick, but I wasn't racing with anyone else.
"I'm looking forward to the short track experience, especially at such a great facility. Rusty (Wallace) built a great race track."
Montoya will be testing this Monday at Talladega with Chip Ganassi's Cup Car of Tomorrow and will then run at Memphis, before racing next Sunday at Iowa.
The Prairie Meadows 250 is scheduled to begin at 2:30pm local time on Sunday, October 15th.
That is correct, it is based on trust. If the other drivers decide that they can trust him in dicey situations they will work with him. If they feel he gives way when it is appropriate (ie not holding up a clearly faster car) and defending his ground when he has the postion without doing dangerous things, they will work with him.
He made some progress in that regard by that save when he got tagged in the passenger side door and made a clean catch to hold the car on line without overcorrecting etc.
He also showed he learns quick and will work with others by the bump drafting without putting his team mate in danger by bumping in the turns.
Running the Ganassi equipment he has a car that can run with the big dogs, and he has begun the process of showing he has the talent and control to run in packs without putting other drivers at risk.
I suspect he will be received quite well by the other drivers. He may get a few "rookie training sessions" by getting pushed out of the way a few times, but that is pretty routine for all the rookies as they learn the unspoken rules regarding when to give and when to take postion.
Busch debut for Montoya confirmed
By Diego Mejia Wednesday, October 18th 2006, 03:19 GMT
Chip Ganassi Racing has today confirmed that Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya will make his debut in a NASCAR sanctioned event at Memphis Motorsport Park on October 28, taking part in the Busch Series Sam's Town 250.
Montoya has competed in two ARCA events, getting his first experience in stock-car racing, first at Talladega where he finished third, and last weekend at Iowa Speedway where he crashed while battling for the lead, finishing 24th.
The Colombian tested at Memphis Motorsport Park last week but drove a Nextel Cup Car, so his race at Memphis will be his first time in a Busch Series car, which has less power than what he has driven so far.
This week Montoya is testing at Homestead-Miami Speedway, where he shares the track for the first time with all the Nextel Cup regulars.
This week's test could also be in preparation for his Cup debut, which could occur at the same track on November 19 in the season finale.
That'd be interesting if he made it into a Cup race this year...seems pretty likely.

He's a line to the fastest growing demographic in the south. Heck at the Iowa race there was a huge Latin American contingent waving Colombian flags teh entire race. That was in Iowa at a race track in the middle of cornfield. He also raced against Joey Hand from ALMS BMW PTG lineage. I'm gonna have to say that he is in some REAL DEAL racing if you are getting him to go away from Formula One.
You should go on the Porsche forum and ask any of the club racers who just raced at Daytona what it's like to be on the banking at 150 with noone around you. Everyone who was there for their first time has made comment that NASCAR is definitely some intense seat time.
Montoya's Cup debut confirmed
By Glenn Freeman Thursday, November 16th 2006, 15:10 GMT
Juan Pablo Montoya will attempt to qualify for the Nextel Cup season finale at Homestead this weekend.
The Colombian will have to make the grid on pure speed though, as he will drive the number 30 car which is not guaranteed a spot on the grid based on owner points.
"This is a good move for me and our team as I continue experiencing the new challenges of racing a stock car," said Montoya.
"I'm really excited that my first Cup race will take place at my hometown track in Homestead as I will have lots of friends and family around."
Montoya, who lives in Miami, will also compete in Saturday night's Busch Series race.
Chip Ganassi had contemplated putting Montoya in the number 42 car of Casey Mears so that he was guaranteed a starting slot in the race, but decided against it.
Mears was understood to be against the plan for him to drive the secondary car and have to qualify on speed, and Ganassi decided that Montoya should have to earn his place on the grid to gain respect.
Ganassi said: "Juan Pablo is making great strides in his transition to stock cars, but this is just another of many steps in preparation for the 2007 season."

Kahne takes Homestead pole
By Matt Beer Friday, November 17th 2006, 22:14 GMT
Kasey Kahne will start from pole position for the NASCAR Nextel Cup season finale at Homestead, while points leader Jimmie Johnson edged closer to the title by taking 15th, and Juan Pablo Montoya comfortably made it into the field for his Cup debut.
The Evernham Dodge team dominated qualifying for the Ford 400, with Kahne's teammate Scott Riggs joining him on the front row, and Elliott Sadler putting the squad's third entry in fourth pace behind Kyle Busch.
"The engine package we brought here is very strong and the Dodge Chargers are working well," said Kahne.
"We'll see what happens, but it's pretty nice to have all three cars up front."
Needing only 12th place in Sunday's race to clinch the championship, Johnson was perfectly content to take 15th in the starting line-up.
"We're certainly excited to get to work and just get out there and do the job that we've been working so hard on," said Johnson. "We had a good practice session and now in qualifying that's the best lap we've had all day."
Kevin Harvick was the best placed of the outside title contenders, taking seventh. Fellow long-shots Denny Hamlin and Dale Earnhardt Jr went 33rd and 14th fastest respectively, with Johnson's nearest rival Matt Kenseth securing 19th.
With a massive 56-car entry aiming for 43 places in the race, Nextel Cup debutant Montoya's first challenge was simply to qualify. He did so with little drama, taking 29th despite not yet being content with the handling of his Ganassi Dodge.
"I think the team did a really good job for me, but it was pretty tight," said Montoya. "We improved it a lot, but we're still not there yet."
Having been fastest in morning practice, Kurt Busch expected to be a major contender for pole. Instead he struggled to 36th.
"We made too many changes and got it real loose," Busch explained. "It was an animal!"
He fared better than Robby Gordon, who will drop to the back of the field after a massive engine failure on his second qualifying lap.
"It's kind of how the season's going," said Gordon. "I think that's our fourth motor in five weeks, so we've got some work to do."

He didn't just out qualify Mears, he made the race on time, Mears had to use a provisional (I wish they would remove that from teh series, as well as remove points for finishing outside the top 20.)

Oh well, cool exit, and he was running well.
EDIT:
Apparently Newman took JPM out after JPM made contact with him...
Damn, those guys go at each other...
Taking someone out with a few laps to go...wow
