I was at LightWerkz's place getting STi HID retrofits and he showed me his S2000 set up first. I was amazed. Then he showed me my STi setup and disappointment set in
They're awesome, man. I'd love to get them put in but I'm loving my HIDs and an upgrade isn't worth it to me right now.
Definitely spring for the S2000s if you can afford it.
Caesar, I've noticed my lights flicker sometimes at startup. I mean, flicker like strobing for a few seconds. Nothing to worry about?

for the jdm non-hid, are you able to use denso(lexus/toyota) ballasts?
i saw that you cut the wires to the ignitor and the denso ones have a special wireloom to it, are you still able to cut it and reconnect it? also the trimming of the ignitor...
only reason i ask is because i am able to get the denso ones a lot easier than sti ones...

You can use any OEM HID kit you want. I had to cut the wires because the ballasts arent mounted to the headlamps like they should be so the customer needs to mount them in the engine bay somewhere..
Stock 06 STi HID ignitor was just too large, I had to cut if I wanted that stock rear cap to shut. Thats why the JDM HID setup is best to use..

i have RHD STi HID projectors on my car...and one of the bulbs just died... what bulbs are you using to light thos suckers up? I pulled the bulb out and it says HS12
any ideas?

^^^ D2S bulbs. Pretty much the bulbs which are used on the majority of all OEM HID projectors.

lookin at those...and they dont look the same as the bulbs that are in there...they look more like h1's

Then you probably don't have the STI HID projectors most likely. You have the halogen projectors, which like you said, take H1 bulbs.

Sorry, I was under the assumption you had the factory JDM STI HID headlamps, which use D2S bulbs. So you have halogen version with an aftermarket HID kit in them I presume using a rebased H1 HID bulb. I had a similar setup in my old EDM headlamps. I bought rebased H1 bulbs from Xenonfactory.com (actually I've bought from them twice since I bought bulbs for my H7 UK300/Prodrive headlamps as well). Great service, and I'd recommend getting the 4100K bulbs they offer as those will offer you the best light output. :) Unfortunately, rebased HID bulbs do not come cheap. :(

Not bashing, just want to correct you before you spread misinformation around.
Thats a rebased hid bulb, meaning its ready to work with h1 halogen setup.
A true HID bulb comes in 2 sizes these days, d2r and d2s. D2r is for reflector housing, and d2s is for projector...

gotcha...this HID thing is all kinda new to me...
Here is my problem. The rebased H1's dont seem to wanna come out...looks like they sit in a little sleeve, but wont come loose of the sleeve. the only other point i can find to disconnect them is way down where there is a connector that goes to the ballasts...and the ballasts are also hidden...and i cant readily get to them... Any advice on how to pull and replace these re-based bulbs?

replacing rebased bulbs has always been an issue.
Can you provide some more feedback on what happened? Maybe its timne for a retrofit :)
Usually rebased HID bulbs have to wires going to the bulb itself, they should just unclip. Where to get them...well thats a whole other issue!

| disaster999 | 12-06-2006 03:09 PM |
theres a little spring clip that holds the bulb in place. if you look at the pictures lightwerkz posted up 2 pages back, you could see on the non hid version of the jdm projector, theres this wire/clip.
| jrskeen | 12-06-2006 03:12 PM |
I will explain it the best i can.
After pulling off the dust cap, i can see there is 2 wires going into a short sleeve that surrounds the base of the bulb. I unattached the spring clip, and can pull the bulb out of the headlight. The problem is that i cannot seperate the bulb from that sleeve that it looks like it attaches into...or if that is even where i am supposed to detach it. The 2 wires coming from the bulb lead to 2 clips that attach to the ballasts. i can unclip them there...but they are very hard to get to. My question is: Do they detach from that sleeve? or is the piggyback wiring part of it too?
would pics help?

So you do have the rebased HID kit, and youve blown a bulb?
Why are they hard to get to? Who installed this kit?

jrskeen. you cant separate the bulb from the base. the bulb, base and wires with 2 plugs are all one piece. you have to unclip the 2 plugs on the wire to take the bulb out
the rebased bulbs should look something like this...

Rebased bulbs from Xenonfactory.com look exactly like the picture above (which includes everything you see above). You probably have to replace that entire section from clips connecting to the ballast---->rubber thing---->rebased H1 bulb, not just the bulb itself. Like I said, I had a very similar looking kit back when I had EDM headlights.
Pic from my EDMs:

What HID coversion kit do you have? I think you need to go through the same company. Huge downside to having those rebased kits..
| jrskeen | 12-06-2006 03:41 PM |
i cant tell what company they came from. I bought the car with these on there. the light pattern is \__\__, which someone told me is actually a Right Hand Drive light pattern... I can't get in touch with the guy that originally owned the car. The ballasts are hidden and i cant get to them. My guess is that these might be the RHD HID kits found at fastwrx.com
that is the best I have been able to do.
that is the best I have been able to do.
| disaster999 | 12-06-2006 03:41 PM |
looking at your pictures, im 100% sure its just a rebased bulb. the easiest way for you i suggest is to take out your headlights. this way you wont be pulling too hard to pushing things out of your way to get to the plugs.
| sevendhappy | 12-06-2006 03:42 PM |
Don't worry about those two other wires coming out of the back, I did not even use those or connect those to anything. Technically, I only used two of the wires, which connected to my ballast. Hope that clears things up a little. :)
| jrskeen | 12-06-2006 03:47 PM |
whats the safest way to pull out the entire assembly?
| disaster999 | 12-06-2006 03:52 PM |
first take off your grille and the side 2 piece. those are held in by clips and push pins. the painted side grille piece are a bit tricky to pull out. dont be afraid to yank those out...theres no other way of doing it. heres a general idea where the clips are:

http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1525
when you have the grille out of the way, the headlights is held by 3 screws each. take a 10mm socket and loosen once loose, you could start pulling the headlight out. you want to be gental here as you dont want to start tugging the wires and pulling out all the wires with it.

When i order the rebased h1 bulb, do i need the ballast connectors they sell too? I assume the bulb assembly should attach to the ballast cables i already have...

dude, PM. please don't bump a thread from 14 months ago with VENDOR questions.
in other news, i've got everything i need to complete my retro in the mail. 35w d2s and TRS TSX replica lenses for my empty shells.
the only thing that worries me about this is the bracket and getting it to fit right. if anyone has a consensus opinion about where to put the tsx so it's squarely in the center, i'd be all ears.
