JDM Rear Light Look (04+ Model) part 3

twentynine 12-15-2005 01:56 AM
well i finally got around to this....i just swapped the bulbs around. these are the driving lamps. the brake lights do the outside two
Heh that's how I have mine too.

Yesterday I tried to get more creative by replacing the center sockets with double filaments and making ALL of the lights running lights, with only the outside two doing brake duty... bleh it looked like chubby Mustang lights. So for anybody that was thinking of doing that, heed my warning and don't do it.

Needless to say, I'm back to the exact same setup you have pictured now. I think it looks nice. :)
gqchynaboy 12-15-2005 02:28 AM
So that I understand, the by doing this mod, the circles are now the "driving' red lights.... when the lights are turned on and the OUTSIDES far corners of the brake lights illuminate when the pedal is depressed?

That does really look good!

Now looking at the "S203 lights off braking" I really like that look too... lol

-Nigel
That is correct

He's not pressing the brakes. Those are the running lights.

twentynine 12-15-2005 01:25 PM

Actually if you're talking about the setup that ATX25RS has, which is a little different from the original post, just imagine the outer two lamps getting brighter for the brakes. Looks really slick IMO.

I'd take a pic of mine, but I'm leaving for a weekend getaway in about 45 mins.
intence 12-16-2005 06:32 PM

well i did the JDM tail light mod with an animation

ATX25RS 12-16-2005 06:38 PM

i was going to do that, but for safety reasons i left the outside lights on. people from the side of your car cant see your taillights like that.
G3Red04WRX 12-17-2005 08:29 AM
i was going to do that, but for safety reasons i left the outside lights on. people from the side of your car cant see your taillights like that.
what kind of safety more do they need to see the back end of your car? There are reflectors in the side of the taillight housing.

From behind they can see the circles, from the side they can see the reflectors.

My problem is now that ive done this mod, i switched the outer and inner bulbs (extended the ground on the outer one to reach). Now, my inners still start dim with running lights and go bright with brakes which is fine, but from the initial post, what do i have to do so the inner circles DONT light up at all when the running lights are off, or did i miss something and they are supposed to light when braking with running lights off?
j00ngyang 12-22-2005 07:10 AM

had a problem, but fixed
NewShockerGuy 12-23-2005 09:55 AM

For those that have posted saying that they have done something different could you post pics? So we can see what's different compared to what has been posted...

I wanted to do this but now I don't because I don't want to "remove" any bulbs from the rear...

-Nigel
scrwrx 12-23-2005 10:14 AM

I did something kind of similar except my lights on are the circle and the outside light are on and when the brake is pressed all the lights turn on. I think it catches your eye more since the middle one lights up inbetween the outer two.
If I remember correctly I just switched the middle one with the outside. was alittle PITA to get the sockets to lock but got it with a little elbow grease

sorry so big

Just tried doing this with my sister... Swapped the bulbs in the order on page 3 or 4... couldn't physcially put the sockets in the different order... I did like how the center lit up but I wasn't comfortable taking the second bulb out... I want people to see my ass end at night..lol

scrwrx:

I like how you did yours and actually looking at it I might do it like that! Is it possible for you to take a picture of what you did at night or in a garage.. I just want to see what it looks like at night time.

Thanks,

you CAN swap the bulbs around you just have to wiggle and kinda angle them until they get in there
I need to bump this with a warning;

I just tried to do the left light on my 04 sti to the following

outerleft-brakelight
center-none
inner(circle)-tail/brake

When I was doing it i quickly figured out that my wires would not stretch far enough. So I cut the proper take in trying to lengthen them. It would have worked except there is a wire that connects the BLINKER light and the ORIGINAL tail light, the wire is the power wire. They appeared to be 2 seperate wires just taped together, but i soon found out that they are bound together down at the actual metal wiring by some bind, so i had to cut and splice ect. ANOTHER PROBLEM! In order for the blinker now to funtion properly is must still be connected to the ORIGINAL tail light power wire (otherwise it will flash at less than half strength and some how cause the right turn blinker to flash at less than half strength) SO WARNING DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS IN A SHORT PERIOD IF TIME BECAUSE WIRINGS HAVE BEEN INCONSISTANT AMOUNG NEWER MODELS!
I have the same problem, how do i make those wires longer?

I don't think those are his lights... thats reflection from the flash. I could be wrong, but heres a flash pic of my 05. That's the reflective part of our tails.

Pardon the ignorance here, but I assume dual filament just allows for two settings like on and then brighter for brakes or something. So does the dual filament work on any wires, or are only certain sockets wired to take advantage of it?

kennyvb - can you explain a bit more about how taking the dual filament out of the outside give you that look? I am assuming it comes on when braking but that's it? How do you know it won't come on while not braking?

Sorry, I know it sounds dumb but I appreciate the help.
x5-992 02-12-2006 10:02 PM

I'm about to trade my '06 taillights for an '05. I want to do this mod and would be easy when we're already swapping. I've seen plenty of result pics, but no detailed pics and instructions...well maybe various instructions making it sound easy and others making it sound difficult, but it's helpful to see step by step photos.
Tkacik 02-12-2006 10:19 PM

Cool. Thanks for posting it!
Handsdown 02-12-2006 11:14 PM

that wrc car really does have its lights on in that pic- there are other pictures where you can see it clearly.

notice how the three stripes are lit up by the flash, but in the pic it's the area AROUND the three stripes that glow?
x5-992 02-13-2006 09:02 PM

Bump my request.

Yeah, the circle light looks pretty sweet. Several '06 owners have already converted to '05 taillights, but this would help make me a little more unique.

No problem. Yes, it'll only work on certain sockets.

Dual filament: 12V (high) for brake, 5V (low) for parking light
Single filament: 12V (high) for brake

So basically replacing a dual filament socket (and bulb) with a single filament bulb will only enable the 12V (high) during braking.

#1=circle light
#2=middle light
#3=outer light

USDM lights: #2 & #3 = running lights. #1 = brake light

A modified JDM look: #1 & #3 = running lights. #2 = brake light

Will that work for this set up?

I like that look, especially if I don't have to rewire, cut, splice, trim, whatever. Just simple moving two bulbs in each taillight assembly.
ATX25RS 03-09-2006 08:20 PM

just switch bulbs 1 and 2. thats what i did. then the three are brake lights.....i think i dont even remember. but this is running lights only.

What I did...

Remove the middle light bulb. Then I made the outer light (#3) the brake lights, and I made the circle light (#1) the running lights. Personally, I Think this looks much better. This way...the circles are always lit (running lights), and the outer lights are the brake lights. The middle light is never used :( . Oh well, it looks better without it.

x5-992 03-29-2006 07:44 PM

I did the switch today. The wires just barely reach, but it looks good.

I tried to take a pic of my tails, but my camera kept causing the middle reflective section light up...

NewShockerGuy 04-09-2006 03:11 AM

I did this then reverted back to stock :-(

I just feel uneasy taking out a light from behind... I want poeple to see me.... When I stood to the side of my car I could not see that the circle was lit up... where the other side since it had the corner light lit up you could see it.. (did the jdm mod to one side and left the other side stock) just so I could get a feel for it...

The circles do kinda look cool but I guess I'd rather play it safe than sorry....

NewShockerGuy 06-18-2006 09:19 PM

Just read through the thread, there are a couple different ways if you want it to light up different mentioned in the thread.. IE: parking lights on = center portion, braking ON= just outer corners... or Parking lights on center and outer portion, braking ON=center and outer portion..

:-p

-Nigel
Handsdown 07-03-2006 05:15 PM

this thread is really hard to understand because no one uses the same terms for the same lights.

we should all start saying the same things, like "outer bulb, center bulb, inner bulb" for each light.

so 04-05 JDM would be
running lights: both inner
braking lights: both outer

02-03 JDM would be running lights:
both outer and both center
braking lights: both inner
WRXDriftR 07-05-2006 09:52 PM

I call this REXDM, since its not the real USDM or JDM style... i like it better than stock, and it keeps the corners lit for people on the sides of me to see that Im there at night

BRAKES: light up all 3 + the wing light
Handsdown 07-05-2006 09:55 PM

that's cool.

i changed my 03 again, it now only has one set of lights for each... complete outer on each side for running lights(so people can still see me from rear 3/4 view) and complete inner, like JDM, for braking.(as well as wing lights and rear deck lid 3rd brake light - i'm not worried about not enough coming on for braking:) )
NA impreza~J 07-06-2006 09:54 AM

I did the "REXDM" as well by switching the circle lamp socket with the middle light socket. I had a problem when puting the circle socket into the middle housing. Some how it popped in. I read somewhere here that something needs to be shaved.....now I understand why. I can't pull the damn thing out now and been to busy to worry about it now. I pulled and tugged on it now the wiring is a bit loose.

I looked at the sockets for the other side but fail to find what to trim. Does anyone know what to trim? Any reference pics?

Thanks.

mine didnt fit into the middle sockets either. Well they kinda roughly stayed in place, but its not a perfect fit. I dont really care, im not gonna be changing them again ever.

obake_SARU81 07-07-2006 04:55 AM
So for this swap guys... you cut the harnesses and just switch em?
You could do it that way if you want!! But this is how I did mines...

1.Get to the four screws that hold the taillamps onto the body..
a.That means taking off that one plastic screw that holds the carpet thingy
2.After step 1,Unscrew the four screws.
3.Unplug the harness for each side.
4.Pull of each rear taillamp.
5.Twist counterclockwise for the middle and inner bulb and pull out
6.Put the middle bulb into the inner socket and inner bulb into middle socket.
NOTE: When doing so, there will be little to no slack so you need to pull the bunch of wires that are in a little groove that keeps the wires cleanly organized.
7.TAH DAH...Your done. Now just put everything back!!!
NOTE:Brake harness will not go back into the place where it originally rested

Here is my take on this mod.

I swapped.
2 and 3, 1 stays on the outside.
Tan-White-Tan
1-3-2

2 in the circle

I wanted the center to continue to function as a break light.
The circle only lights up with the headlights/driving lights.

I tried swapping the bulb in 1 to a single filament bulb, but the 7440 bulbs wont fit in a 7443 slot.
I tried breaking the wires to make it into a single filament bulb, but that didnt work, they just stopped lighting up completely.

So here is the solution, go buy a pack of 7440 single filament bulbs. Near the end where the wires are bent over, are two ramp shaped tabs, one in each side, show in my awesome photo below, take a dremel tool and slightly grind down the tabs. Then your 7440 will fit in a 7443 (TAN) connector.

Results are shown below. In my opinion its a bad idea to not use the center section, it lights up the brightest.

To the left is the straight on, the right is turned to the side/profile, sorry i know it sucks.
