First SCCA Tour Event..Georgia Motorsports Park (Valdosta) REG is now open part 4

makofoto 02-23-2007 11:43 PM

just go to Home Depot, buy some 2' long shelf boards and use a metal tape measure to do your toe ...
Actually it was Rob Faulkner driving Charles' car. Rob is a madman, but the car is a killa. If Rob drives it this weekend he'll win by a second with sand in the trunk.

Bill - I didn't think the car pushed. I thought it felt good except for the diff. Fix that and you'll be well ahead. We've got our work cut out for us with Jason Tipple in a S2000 on a transition course. This is basically an airport course, so we may need the rain on Sunday...
oh....sorry..and 3rd gear.....;)
Scooby South 02-24-2007 06:01 PM

Ok....update time....

Suby's are going well....

1st ASL
1st STU
2nd STU
3rd STU
1st BSP (16 in class....All cars are within 2.8Sec of Joel in Brians Car)...

I would be 2nd right now behind Joel...But coned ALL 3 of my Runs...

So I have some Work to do...Jason Tipple is officially in 2nd about 6/10ths back...then it gets crazy close...If I didn't cone...I would have been ahead of Jason Tipple by a 1/10th and half...or so...but I am now in 11th place.. 2.5 seconds down....I am really disappointed...but sometimes thats how it goes...I have incar...but I don't think my hotel allows you tube....we'll see...Car Felt Great...Definitely can be into the mix of things power wise and handling....just needs a better driver :( Oh well nothing to loose now...balls out tomorrow...and maybe I can salvage something...

NO diff issues today as the course was pretty much a balls out 3rd gear (STi) run...
Ian Stewart ran a 36.1 in the GT Porsche in SS... .only to be beat my MR. McGeorge in Z06 by a 1/10th from the ASP folks.....BSP was about 1.2 seconds off McGeorge's Time...For a 37.2 by Joel...(Mine was a 37.7 with a cone...and Tipple's time was 37.8....Fastest Street tired car seem to belong to STX and STS2 in the low 39's....thrdeye is leading STU by a few 10ths... and Meridith is leading ASL By 4/10's...so....Most of the Subies are doing Well
....just wish I could have cleaned up my runs..:(...Oh well...Till tomorrow...

Bill, the 2nd day is for redemption! You can do it.

Do one crazy run.
One clean run
One crazy/clean run...

Good luck everyone!
Crash477 02-24-2007 07:28 PM

Well I found a guy driving an 05 STi in BSP who let me run his street tires, which are RT615s in 245/45/17's.. And Jon Krolewicz adjusted the toe, he said there was 3/4" toe out!! Too damn much!

After today I am leading by .247 over an 05 STi from TN.. THe course was so damn fast too! It was a 1/4 mile down, and back, with some ofsets, and slaloms.. I spun my first run, had a 41.2xx second run, then got a 40.4xx on my 3rd to take the lead! Should be interesting tomorrow. It is supposed to rain.

Bill, don't let your day 1 conage get you down. Go out there and put some fast & clean runs down tomorrow! Great job in STU Steven - glad you were able to borrow some tires from a fellow competitor!
Great job in STU Steven - glad you were able to borrow some tires from a fellow competitor!
Thanks! I was talkign with some friends about it, and we were saying how awesome the autocross community is! I just met the guy, and he lets me borrow some tires.. Mark and Devin had some trouble with their Civic, and people let them have stuff for it.. its so awesome how everyone helps out!
ratt_finkel 02-24-2007 10:50 PM

Damn look at AS, some big names and close competition! And in BS, an old M3 less than 8 tenths off Carter Thompson, very nice. haha, and check out 2nd place in BS, Frictionless Rollers FTW! Interesting shake up in GS as well. 06 National Champ sitting in 4th place.

Justin (alltracin) moved down 6 spots to finish 9th in STS, while his co-driver Pete snatched the last trophy spot and claimed 4th.

Bryan Hertweck from my Blue Ridge Region finished 2nd in BS!

I, on the other hand am pissed at myself....... I had the lead by .4 the first day. My first run today was wet and slow. I coned my second run, picked up 2 seconds on my third and tipped a cone at the finish :furious:
My co-driver ends up beating my by .065..

Congrats to him, but I'm pissed I had to lose that way....Oh well...no more co-drivers...

Hi guys...thanks Justin... Crazy Crazy day......todays course was SUPER Fast...

Even tho I moved up...and didn't Cone 1 Run...I still drove like Crap....Oh well...I couldn't get the damn thing in 3rd gear..sometimes I HATE that....Actually I hate it all the time....

Heats 1-4 got pretty much clean runs (no Rain)...except the tail end of heat 4....Heat 5(BSP, STS) was in grid...waiting...waiting...waiting...the skys opened up.....now we started with the mind games...we purposely brought our Street tires to grid....When it Started to rain...Me and my co-driver leaped into action and changed one side of the tires..to my Streets...which are pretty good in the rain....to watch the fun begin...about 3 or 4 competitors started scrambling for their Hoosier Wets'....2 cars actually fully changed to wets....meantime...when the Jack dropped on the last Car..(Joel's STi with his Hoosier wets....) we quickly changed ours back to the R's....as the course got damp for a few minutes...and immediately started to dry out..(We never intended to run my streets unless it completely deluged the course....)..well the other teams noticed we went back to dry's...they were like ****, and changed theres back...I will say I learned that little trick from Mike King....sorry Joel..;)...it was all sorta planned....which started the 5th heat....Well...I was still having cone issues today....as well as shifting problems........Probably the worst I have driven in last 6 monthes...I felt like I always behind today....I couldn't seem to shake my cone collecting except for one run ....which I took...but still couldn't find 3rd Gear...Meh..whatever...The Car felt great...ran strong...and for the most part was NOT the limiting factor of my results...it definately was Driver Error...I did manage to find 1st gear mid course for a brief second..   which created a brief overrev...scared me a little bit..car seems ok on the drive home...so We will see....No rod knock thank god..which is what I expected...Thank you Jesus...anyway...I finally got a non-coned run...and I kinda let it hang out on last run....took some chances...and had a HUGE Tank SLAPPER at the finish...the finish was sorta tight...and I was going for it...(Now Ian Stewart has this same incident happen...to him in the 2nd Heat...and cranked out a FTD with it...I wasn't so fortunate....and clipped the last cone in finish...Overall it was great to see everyone...I hope I can do better next time and give Joel a run for his money..:)...Congrats to all the trophy winners....even Joel..;)...Seriously tho...It was a great time..I might do Devans now...we'll see...

I hear ya.....Usually I don't either.....but you know it happens just in passing...
Some random comments from the weekend to try and get into competitors heads...

"You havn't done your diff yet huh....there is a few 10's there if you do it" I will say this one was honest...but I still thought about it all weekend...

"Man those tires are wide....Are you sure you not going to hook a gate with them things..."

"Man those cones like you huh"

"I think all the Rally cars should have their own class"

"You didn't drive a 100%.... Holy ****"

"Wait...you got beat by a Civic with no LSD...   "

"A GT3 is Easy to drive fast...it will make anyone look like Superman"

"Holy Crap that guy is fast" After Ian Stewart Tank Slapped the Finish and got FTD

These are all mind game comments....meant to get into competitors heads....
alltracin 02-26-2007 09:06 AM

UGH. Second day. One wet, conservative run, and then getting too out of sorts to stay on course the last two. :( Third to ninth is a hell of a drop.
jcroy66 02-26-2007 09:24 AM

I disagree that those are all mind game comments. They CAN be. Some of them likely were. Doesn't mean they were all meant that way. For instance, quite a lot of those were comments I'd say, and I almost never play mind games. I'd say them either in the course of a normal conversation (like the comment about the diffs) or just to tease a buddy (like the comment about getting beat by a Civic with no LSD). :) But that's different than playing mind games.
thrdeye 02-26-2007 09:50 AM

I'm just lucky I held on to 2nd spot in STU. Kornhaus drove great under the stress of trying to find some tires, etc. I am really not used to shifting that much and I think that's one reason STU was so slow compared to the other ST classes. I just suck at shifting.

Saturday I had to go from 2>3, 3>2, then 2>3 again, otherwise, I would have been on the limiter for a looong time.

Sunday was a little easier, but still had to go into 3rd and back into 2nd. It sucks that everyones last runs in STU were a washout. Mine was dry up until about 15 seconds in, then there was VERY heavy rain and that was it, I actually had to turn the wipers on in one of the straights.

All in all, I am pleased and it's the first time I've ever won any money racing (w00t!)

They were running 285s all around, and Carter actually turned a 37.0 on his last run Sunday (but danced a few cones too far). He looks at home in that car, and should be very tough in Topeka. Jim (Carter's dad) looks 5 times better in the 8 than the 350Z. When I was watching him run on Saturday I thought it was Carter at first until I noticed the car number.

As far as the mind games were concerned, the tire changing thing didn't really get to me. When it was raining it was coming down hard enough to justify the Wet Radials, so we switched them on one half of the car and started playing the waiting game. If it would have continued raining we would have switch the other side to wets and run, but it stopped raining and the breeze quickly dried the course so we swapped the drys back on. I was just hoping that it wouldn't turn into a 1 run heat, but the course dried so quickly that 2nd drivers had a dry line on their first runs.

A question for the entrant's, why was STU so much slower than STS2 and STX? Did weather play a role based on run group times? Driver pool? etc.?

Dave
thrdeye 02-27-2007 10:11 AM

I answered that in my other post, I think. I am the 2nd place guy in STU.

A lot of new experiences for me on this course with all of the shifting. We have also added a lot of power since last time I drove the car, and b/c of that, we were in between 2nd and 3rd a lot. Also on new tires, new front spring rates, and a stiffer front bar.

I was also being careful not to cone away a win because of all the slaloms and transitions. After talking to the experienced guys, I've realized you can't be careful....you just have to drive.

I feel like I would have been faster in my STX WRX, back in my comfort zone.

But the real reason STU was slower is because the guys at the top of STX and STS2 are way better and more experienced drivers.
Scooby South 02-27-2007 10:23 AM

Dave
Nationals contenders....Not to take away from the STU folks as they drove great...

STS2: Andy Hollis, Darrin Desimo...etc

STX: Mike King, Meridith etc....

I think the gene pool was deeper in those particular classes with no less than about 4 Nationals champ/contenders in there..

Bill
DrBiggly 02-27-2007 10:58 AM

thrdeye and Bill are dead on. Put those top guys in STU cars and they'd have been miles ahead of STS2 and STX. :)

I talked to Carter, Story goes. He got back from Nationals and Got a Call from Nissan informing him they we're hiring in young guns to replace the veterans at less salary and they wanted their Leased 350z back in 10 days.
So Carter Bought a Mazda (which he thinks will be better on the slippery surface in kansas)!

So Carter Bought a Mazda (which he thinks will be better on the slippery surface in kansas)!

yes, that last finish was quite entertaining. I wasn't sure you could get through that last offset that far sideways without a cone.

Only picture I found of me in all those pics is of me driving the sweeper. Oh well probably some of my best driving all weekend.

National Tours are good for contingecy. I think I am getting $150 from Yokohama, some guys get free tires, etc.
