Perhaps this had something to do with the outburst on the plane? :p

Congratulations! That's a solid weekend!

Jon said after that joke I fell asleep with a french fry coupon in my hand..........
man, that fastest lap was light years faster than anyone else. I feel a win coming this year!
I had a real thing going on in the car in that race. I was in "the zone" and I had to deal with the throttle each time into turn 3.

I had a picture of my son and Willy T. Ribbs on the dash for good luck.

I am trying to get the data sheets from the race to post. I was getting on the gas so early in many spots that I could see the distance of second place just being reeled in lap after lap,..THEN....the throttle would stick. The engineer said my sector times except for that one turn would have been 2:24 lap times, which makes sense.

For alot of guys who grew up in racing families and parents have money they get ALOT of seat time, but when you dont have that, you have to do indoor karting and maybe the occasional back road after the wife goes to sleep. My OBS is a great training tool with 104whp and suspension and brakes like a touring car, but I like and need more work with data and the engineers. Instructing is great and we get some free track time, but I want more.

What about the 15 year old that raced in the Subaru STI endurance car last year, and in the diesel 3 series this season (he might be 16 now)? Get that boy in a cart!

ANytime Dan, but I think you would benefit from just simply driving the OBS for 2 sessions. NO power and alot of brakes...no alternative than to carry speed. Then you get back into the STI and you go about 4 seconds faster than before.

That would be Auston Harris........

Bill Lester, Auston Harris, Jon Winter and ( maybe me if I can step up enough) would be the proposed group to make history. Marshall Pruett and I have been talking about this for over a year. A wealthy businessman proposed the same thing on the way back from LeMans in 06. Quote.." Jamaican bob sled team ring a bell ?"....... He kinda had a point.

True, I've never driven a low powered car on the track. I think I would also benefit from having an instructor who understands Subarus and isn't afraid to give me honest feedback. It seems like most of my instructors kind of hold back and let me figure things out for myself, which is cool but sometimes I wish they would just tell me if they think I could be braking later somewhere or carrying more speed somewhere. Since I will be running on RA1's this season I think the low 1:20's at Summit is a reasonable goal, and I can't think of anyone who knows summit a whole lot better than you.

To be honest, I wouldnt necc shoot for a lap time. Let the time come to you. 1.24 and lower in a Sti on r comps and suspension and 300whp is good. Remember "risk and reward" are a factor. Alot of people make claims on lap times but have certain things done and thats not always obvious. First time I dipped below a 1.23 I was shocked. I had gone out and just kinda taken it easy and was working on a couple of small things,...like driving UP a gear and lower RPM's thru the carousel....WOW..BLAM...2 seconds faster !!!

I always like to get into a zone. The " why am I out here zone"....
I like to get away from people and go deep inside and then get in the car in the zone, but everyone is different.

Myles
boost junkie 02-07-2007 01:44 AM

Yeah I don't necessarily focus on a lap time but at this point it's sort of a good way for me to judge progress. I just want to work on some details that most instructors don't really bother to comment on, like carrying more speed through turn 10 and braking later into 1. Maybe that's just something I need to figure out on my own though.

I know what you mean about getting in the zone, sometimes I just like to be alone in the car and completely focused, maybe singing "eye of the tiger" to myself if I'm in the right mood
RaceComp Engineering 02-07-2007 01:53 AM

Carrying more speed thru 10 yes very important. BRaking super deep into turn 1....not as important as it seems.....actually braking less and thinkingabout carrying more mid corner speed and out is more important UNLESS you are racing. So start practicing braking OFF LINE into turn 1, as there is less grip and in reality some day thats going to be what you have to do anyway. I like to pull out a little ( 8 ft) to the left at turn in for turn 1, to get a nice arch on that turn. Maybe not when someone is ON you, but for a lap time, try it.

Carousel will be the place to make it happen. Using a taller gear into 6th and NOT having to shift between 7 and 8 will allow for a higher exit speed, plus you can commit to more gas pedal too without the jerky feeling IF you decide to check up a hair.

My neighbor Bill while racing spec ford racers tried that approach after a season of me saying that( he was my student at FATT the year before) and he got a podium in his last race of the season. He passed someone coming out of 9. Key is to anticipate the drift in turn 9 when you get there, because the speed will be greater than when you do the shift between 7 and 8. Not to mention things are not as busy too,..you can just put that foot down and look super far ahead and commit like a marriage of grip and power. LOL.

..anyway thats just my opinion. LOL.

Myles,

Congrats on your performance! Best of luck in your future racing ventures!

I've been following your racing story posts for a while now and they are truly inspirational, especially as I'm getting my start in wheel-to-wheel (spec miata).

The Panoz series looks awesome. Although it is definitely expensive, it looks like a good value all things considered. Is there any TV coverage?

That'd be Preston Henn.

The Panoz cars, for those that haven't seen them up close, provide some of the best racing imaginable at low costs. The cars have more in design similarities to a John Deere than an actual Panoz, but they are fun.

I would like to make one or two events. I'd like to make more time for racing this year. Get an SCCA license or the like and we'll do an enduro. Enduro's are great for seat time. Maybe Slyme at Caseromp.com will help us a but............;)
boost junkie 02-08-2007 10:58 PM

My plan is to save some money and get either an SCCA or NASA license next year. An Enduro would be awesome...I'm currently thinking about doing either time trials (NASA TTA) or NASA Super Touring 2 but I'd love to do one of the nasa enduros, maybe even 25 hrs. of thunderhill one of these days.
