KVR and Racecomp get podium in first Panoz race of the season... part 1

KVR and Racecomp get podium in first Panoz race of the season...
After missing the first 2 races of the winter season in the Panoz series, I finally made it to the 3rd race held at Sebring International Raceway in Florida. The day started wet, cold and nasty out, with blowing winds and left over hurricane conditions. We started on Pirelli wets and I was "ok" in morning practice. I didnt feel fast and didnt feel slow, just OK. I never have liked that feeling because sometimes you need that extra bit of confidence to make it happen under some circumstances.

After sorting the car and how different this car felt than the same version in October's test days I managed to qualify 7th. The only guys in front of me were regular front runners. My wet times were 3.17 and 6th, 5th, 4th and 3rd were all within 1 second of each other, so it was "on" in my eyes.

You ever sing that song..." rain, rain go away...come back another day?"...well at lunch I was humming that and after we ate, the rain stopped and the typical Florida breeze stepped in and we had a dry line and the Panoz crew put slicks on. This changed everything. Alot of guys needed alot of time to "change modes" from wet to dry . I am " that instructor" who is always on the track at lunch time when it rains at my local track, so I can go in and out of that mode pretty fast.

At race start I move up to 5th right away aa some guys didnt trust the cold Pirelli D3's off line. I love cold Pirelli's and took the inside line. I fought for 4th place for 2 laps and found 3rd place after 7 laps. ( all while this was going on I did NOT know I was up to that spot because one of the front runners crashed)....Once I had my eyes on 3rd place, I fought for 4 laps to out some distance between 4th place and myself. Just as I pulled out about 10 car lengths, the throttle started sticking WOT at turn 3 !!! "WTF ?..you gotta be kidding me.....?" So for the next 9 laps I would pull out 10 cars from 4th and I actually caught 2nd place and then would loose it because of the throttle. Each time I would have to shut the engine down, stabb the gas pedal like a world cup kicker and then restart as I jammed the gear shifter into 2nd to slingshot out of turn 3. This made 4th place think he had a chance !!

Finally I realized that I could only use 90 % throttle and that the bumpy nature of turn 1 was part of the problem. So with only 90% throttle, I was carrying more speed and taking more risk. This proved to be a good thing in some ways as I was driving better with less !!

All in all I finished 3rd, but remember ,. I didnt know it..I thought I was maybe 4th. While carrying speed, I got the fastest lap of the race. With the track drying out, and carrying gobs of speed, I ran a 1.26.001 !! First places best time was a 1.26.9 and second place best was a 1.26.7......so I was coming for both of em' both later admitted they had nothing left for me.

So a podium 3rd place and fastest lap was very surreal. The real surprise was as I came into the pits I saw the car that crashed and I only saw 2 other cars !! Ithought.." there is no way I got a podium"....and Jon Winter, my first instructor and one of my driver coaches was smiling. Jon NEVER smiles. He was waving 3 fingers and people who NEVER even noticed me were all smiling. Once I got out of the car it started to set in that I got a podium in a race that I didnt have a good feeling going into at the start of the weekend.

First person I called was my wife and then I called my sponsor who couldnt make it to the race.

Tomorrow is another race day and I hope to at least do as well if not better.

I would like to thank Keith Vaughn for giving me the opportunity and making the race happen from a money stand point( cant do it without the money). Jon Winter came down and helped me think about things I need to think about in general and keep me focused.Jon was my first instructor back in the early nineties and has kept me focused. We both became instructors and he went on to race in Speed World Challenge in TC. We both raced Porsches and raced from our wallets. There is a big difference racinng from your wallet. Chad Block, has spent endless time talking me thru that track , turn by turn, inch by inch. Wet line, dry line. HE knows Sebring very well and I can say I know where each blade of grass is on the track. Thanks Chad !!

ANyway, not as big a deal as Grand Am or Speed World Challenge, but top level spec racing none the less. Since I started RCE and GTWORX, I havent been able to do as much racing as I have wanted to , so people like Keith Vaughn( KVR ) making it happen means alot to me. Having the ability is one thing, having the money to make it happen is another. Keith from minute one was THERE and did his part. I have had sponsorship deals fall thru in the past, but this time it didnt and I feel lucky. We hope to do more this year if I can get a couple more sponsors to come forward. I hope that this finish shows some promise and ability.

Pics comimg soon.

yeah it was crazy knowing that I could have placed 2nd. I was faster than 2nd place in 3 turns, so it would have realistic.

Thanks.

While I have raced before this was kinda special. As I sat on the grid I remembered being there for the FIA GT race 10 years prior ...thinking and wishing that I could race there someday. To better put this in perspective,..this is coming from someone who was told as a 4 yr old that I would never become a race car driver. Most think of that title " racing driver" as PRO, when in reality if you're doing it, you are just that, a racer. When I told my mom about today she remembered the conversation when I was a kid. And my dad who NEVAR gave a ship about racing let alone me doing it,..still had nothing to say, but it didnt bother me. So its a huge deal for ME, and I wanted to share it with this community. I hope to continue on and do things to make my son proud, and maybe some day get to race with him.

YOu know its funny. I did not even put the camera in. I think I will tomorrow. I have some footage from October test day, but I wasnt feeling it yet. So yeah we will run the HD video tomorrow. I didnt today because of the rain and the car leaks at the rear window. I think its time for a chase cam !!

Oh and Audi ALMS team is there tonight(NOW) testing,..so knowing you need a LMP ride, I spray painted their transporter...." The Spyder rocks !! signed, Chad Block.."

So you should get a call from Audi any minute now......lol.

1.28 in morning practice..cold track still puddles.

Qualified 5th with a 1.25.4. Pole was a 1.24.8 and so top 5 aare all within 1 sec.

Drinking water and eating pasta for lunch.

Fingers crossed and throttle not sticking any longer.

care felt good and I felt like there was more left. These D3's go away after 20 minutes..so basic late attack mode for that reason alone.

Talk tou guys soon. Maybe 2 podiums. Just want to have fun. no pressure.

RaceComp Engineering 02-05-2007 01:44 AM

Guys, THANKS A TON !!! I cant tell you what it means FIRST to get the thanks and support. Second its a bigger deal to me than most know about. I dont think most people even know about the series and then they dont know that the guys and gals that are racing in the series ARE GOOD !! I Realized more of that this weekend. I missed the first 2 races of the season because I was working for a marketing company that hires drivers for the ride and drives for BMW North America. So ALL these drivers have ALOT more time under their belts at Sebring. So for me to come in and NOT even attend the friday "lapping" day, and then get double pods, that blows my mind. I was also chasing some personal gremlins too since I had a wierd off on a parade lap in 2003 in the rain. So qualifying in the rain Saturday was good for the soul. Alot of SCCA guys, a couple of Grand Am guys, alot of Porsche GT3 guys, NASA guys, Susan Krohn of Krohn Racing was racing. Its NOT like the field was spread out like 20 seconds. It was tight racing. Very much like the Runoffs.

Todays race I started from 5th and got a great start. I moved into 4th and 4th place and I fought for 10 laps. We were running qualifying laps for 10 laps. I would pass him, we would pass me. I finally felt the tires going away and was putting in more and more correction coming out of 10/13/15/16....and those are places you NEED grip and to put the power down. So after both of us made each other make mistakes for 12 laps, I settled in on 4th. At one point I pulled out a nice lead on 4th when I was in 3rd and then I made a mistake that cost me about 8 car lengths. Then he passed me and I settled in on 4th. Meanwhile I stayed with 3rd place, as in 2 cars lengths back. We both noticed 1st and 2nd were locking up and going deeper and deeper and fighting more and more and we were guess what?..catching them !! So now we have after 14 laps( i think) of running 2.25s almost catching the leaders. On the last lap as I was mounting and preparing in my head to make a last ditch turn 17 last turn late deep brake on 3rd place, I noticed 2nd place WENT off into the grass !! Making room for BOTH of us on the podium. At that point with the Pirelli D3's more than SPENT,..I saw no reason to risk things to try for 2nd. I crossed the finish line in 3rd and made the weekend more consistent than anyone else that weekend with 2 podiums.

Yes I cried on the cool down lap. People were jumping up and down at the corner stations as I found out later that our fight ( 3rd and 4th) was THE fight of the race. We turned the fastest consistent laps over the entire race. We collectively cranked out 2.25's for over 90% of the race laps within 1 tenths of each other. I never knew why you see some racers get out after a race and hug the other guy( no matter who won or who was in front) and now I know. When 2 drivers/atheletes are doing ALL they can for a long time its a weird thing since you both know you are both doing all you can.

Alot of people were asking if I would make the IMSA sanctioned Pro race at the 12 hrs of Sebring, and I could not tell them yes nor no. A couple of people offered to connect me with people who are great at marketing and getting funding for racers who dont have funding, so I am working on that.

Great racing, great people, great series.

I hope to do more SCCA racing this year, some time attacks and maybe a T2 race here or there.

Ok, so I took pics and tomorrow I will upload them. I just got in after catching 2 flights etc.

Again thanks guys for the support.

Interesting point. I noticed that there are only a hand full of consistent guys. Everyone shows speed, so if I could make the Sebring 12hr event, and do well, I could be a good ways up in the points for the season, even though I missed the first 2 races.
