im lovin the look. i just ordered the LEDS for the brake and reverse, i think that i am going to go with either the sylvania silverstar turnsignals or something that has the chrome on the outside of the bulb for the turn signals. i dont feel like messing with resistors, i know that its easy i just dont want the hassle

you're the man! this is exactly the proof i needed for myself to buy led tail bulbs. i didn't think they'd work too well in the 02/03 lenses, but they are obviously just as bright as oems. I'm buying these bulbs right now!
I ordered from superbrightled's and got them less than a week later.
Here's a side by side video: LED's vs stock taillight bulbs:
http://media.putfile.com/WRX-taillights-LED-bulbs-side-by-side-regular-ones (1.1 MB)
And LED's in all the taillight slots:
http://media.putfile.com/LED-tails-full (900K)
They are 7443's and 7440's. I think I have it
7443-7443-7440 [license plate] 7440-7443-7443
which may or may not be backwards.
Problem is that now I need one for the 3rd brake light.
Anyhoo, pretty sharp, pretty cheap, glad I did it.
I did a daytime test this morning and had no problem seeing it. We'll have to see if I get rear ended, but it doesn't look any more dim to me, nor does it appear to affect it from the sides.
I just ordered some 1157's for my Miata taillights.

If you got the festoon bulbs from superbrightleds.com, you might be disappointed. I found them to be way too dim, especially when just the dome light was on. I bought the map lights from here: http://www.taskled.com/dome.html
They look pretty redneckish, but they're uber bright and give off a nice white light. Kinda pricey, but when they turn on, I forget about the price. :)

thanks for the info... but right now i have the 2-led red bulb and isn't 'bright' but is great to put on at night and not affect your vision. so a white version should be like night and day so-to-speak. after spending 60 on led tail bulbs i don't think the wife would be happy with another expensive bulb hehe. however she does complain about the red lights in the car now...

I've ordered from superbrightleds.com - customer service was fine, but the products were disappointing. I bought brakelights, maplights, and a dome light. The maplights were ok, but I've since found brighter ones. The dome light is WAY too dim, as someone else has mentioned. The brakelights made my fuse blow whenever I installed both of them. I still haven't figured out why. So if anyone wants to buy them off me . . .

They must not be sitting in the socket properly and are shorting across the terminals. It certainly can't be from the current draw of the LEDs.
Are you sure you got the proper type bulbs?

I've seen some led bulbs in tail lights before and you could see that it was leds in there and didnt give off a good reflecting light light a normal bulb would?

Thanks for the writeup. I ordered 6 uv 7443 for the brakes and 2 7440 super white for the reverse. I also bought a license plate bulb. With the UV color behind the red do you think i'll get a purplish hue. Like a Harley's brake light with the blue-purple dot in it. I like that look, I'll post pics. Thanks

i dunno about the UV ones man... ultra violet light isnt visible to the naked eye right??
unless ultra violet is a shade of purple???
i interpreted those bulbs as UV as in we can't see it...

Ok, finally have some (sorta) day-light pics. These were taken at 4pm, on an overcast day. When the sun is fully out, these are a LOT dimmer still.
Front turns (left is led, right is normal bulb):

rear turns (left is normal, right is led):

On a bright overcast day, these wash out a ton. In fact, the normal bulb (on the left) wasn't all that bright. You could see the leds had lit, but it would be easy to miss. I don't know how much of an issue that would be.
The big problem is that the reflector is reflecting the sky as well as the leds, so the contrast just isn't there.
rear brakes (left is normal, right is led):

rear tail-lights (left is normal, right is led):

rear brakes + tail-lights (left is normal, right is led)

Here you can see that the 7443s just don't gain much brightness from "dim" to "bright", which makes very little change. In fact, watching them come on/off, I didn't think they WERE changing at first, compared to the normal bulbs.
So, my general thought is that the LEDs just aren't as bright as the bulbs.
If you were to look at a bare bulb, and a bare LED bulb, the LED would win hands down. The problem, though, is the reflector, especially with the turn signals.
The reflected light from the 6 LEDs that face out radially just isn't enough. The LED bulbs aren't really good replacements for the glowing filament, because the light produced is differently oriented. This is the same argument that Dan Sterns uses about not using HID retrofit bulbs in halogen light reflector housings, the light's in the wrong spot.
This is most apparent with the inner brake light. That's actually a projector-style housing, but the bulb comes down in at an agle, and the 9 leds that point out the end of the bulb actually end up pointing down uselessly.
Now, I DO think that a better LED bulb could be made, especially if you were to go about trying to replicate the angles from which the filament can be viewed with LEDs, using very high power leds (www.superbrightleds.com has some 1W leds. The LEDs just don't throw enough light to the sides to be able to fully light up a reflector. With a good reflector design, you're really looking at 100 bulbs or more, due to the reflections. a single LED isn't as bright as a the filament, and so while the leds are reflecting off all the facets of the reflector, it's not nearly enough light.

Agreed, the LED bulb by itself is not yet bright enough for daylight. Im actually thinking there has to be a way to fit TWO bulbs for each single bulb; It would just be a matter of buying a bulb holder and connecting the wires to the indivdual stock bulb sockets/holders. Attaching this 2nd bulb socket to the reflector also would seem easy(drill/cut hole in the reflectors, a little rubber cement, etc). As these are LED's with low power usage, electrical drain shouldn't be a problem.
I'm going to try this when I get a chance, BUT I encourage anyone with more time to try it first

To me, the LED bulb in the brake lights is fine because of the bulb being covered by the red plastic diffuser. It's perfect in fact and much better than the slower regular bulbs. And to me, they are as bright or brighter than the regular bulbs, especially if you are creative with your wiring.
But the LED in the turn signal position isn't that great in direct sunlight. However, the regular turn signal bulb in direct sunlight isn't that great either. So 6 of one...half a dozen of another. Personally, I think they work fine in Chicago since the sun never seems to come out anyway.
Glad to hear what other people think. Sorry for that first post. Man, that is a long post! Does anyone read it all the way through?! I probably wouldn't.

mmmmmk my advice is to not use superwhites or xenons in any of the tails - they are significantly dimmer. However I put in the half-chrome "chrome domes" from superlumination and I am very pleased. The bulbs are only half chromed and are just as good as stock only more yellow - they look great and my lenses look clear. I also put in a 7440 bulb instead of the stock 7443's in the outermost spot and they only light up with the brakes - viva la WRC. However I don't think they are getting the maximum voltage. Any ideas?

That would definitely be the way to do it. The same wattage in an LED matrix as the bulbs provide would be rather bright.

most people say you only need twelve 10k MCD led's in a rectangular pattern to equate to the brightness of a 24watt bulb... so yeah, it would be very bright if you used more. maybe even too bright. i'd probably wire it up so there was 6 for running lights, 12 for brake, and 18-20 for a fog light:devil:
I ordered from superbrightled's and got them less than a week later.
Here's a side by side video: LED's vs stock taillight bulbs:
http://media.putfile.com/WRX-taillights-LED-bulbs-side-by-side-regular-ones (1.1 MB)
And LED's in all the taillight slots:
http://media.putfile.com/LED-tails-full (900K)
They are 7443's and 7440's. I think I have it
7443-7443-7440 [license plate] 7440-7443-7443
which may or may not be backwards.
Problem is that now I need one for the 3rd brake light.
Anyhoo, pretty sharp, pretty cheap, glad I did it.
To bump this from the superdead:
I'm 99.9% sure that this mod caused my 3rd brake light bulb to get so hot that it melted my 3rd brake light assembly. I just put in the replacement assembly tonight. I'm back to OE bulbs and I don't miss the LED's.
that is all :)

Do people install with LED strips instead?

Just want to add to this thread, since it was five years ago when the OP first noted using the Matrix I style LED, there are many new versions now, including the Matrix II. My thought is, what about the even newer ones that use 120 LED SMT high-powered (360 degree angle) bulbs? Will these LED bulbs perform at levels where they are no longer dimmer in the daytime?
Also, can someone confirm that super-white LEDs are actually dimmer than a red LED using the same brand/model?
