Repainting 06 Impreza Trunk Emblem

Hey, I'm just wondering if the process for repainting the Subaru emblem in the middle of the trunk on the 06's is the same as repainting the front grille badge ("i" badge, subaru stars, etc.) I'm pretty sure this hasn't been covered, and I haven't seen one repainted yet. I think that a nice black emblem would look good on my car
| samg00dy06STI | 02-20-2006 04:12 PM |
uhh yeah actually it has been covered somewhere just look im not sure where
| MidnightBlackPearl | 02-20-2006 04:52 PM |
All I found when I searched was how to do the front grille emblem, not the one on the trunk. I'm not talking about the SUBARU letters either, but the 06 stars of pleides trunk emblem. If anyone can link me to a thread about this, I'd appreciate it as well. If it's the same as doing the front grille one, I've already done it with the "i" badge, so I was just wondering if the badge is constructed in the same way. Thanks

anyone?

I bet you can't just sand down the backside to repaint - the posts probably get in the way in some spots

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. I wasn't even thinking about how, even after filing them down to be flush, there'd probably still be something in the way of me sanding off the color.... Well, thanks a lot

yes, it can be done.

I just paint matched my front badge fine, but I moved on to the back and found the backplate + posts like the Picture above. I'm stumped on how to get the emblem out from that backplate. Should I just blast it with the heat gun, or do I have to file down that whole backplate to the back of the emblem? I know people have done this, including ESEMES.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Did anybody find out yet? Is it just the hair drier to soften up the glue?
| sperry7 | 07-21-2006 02:38 AM |
Yeah here ya go:
1) remove emblem + badge totally
2) drill a few small holes in the back of the plastic backplate so they get to the emblem, but don't actually pierce it. (kinda tricky just go slow) I drilled 3 holes one on each side and one in the middle.
3) Heat it up (as I did but isnt entirely necessary)
4) tap out the emblem with a few tools. I used the flat side of a nail. It is kinda hard to push it out but just keep pushing and make sure not to scratch the chrome stars or damage the paint on the back of the emblem. I worked one side open and stuck a pocket knife in the crack to wedge it open even farther.
Hope that that helps
thank esemes for the technique!

Well I have another question too... How do you get the badge flush with the double sided automotive tape? I tried for 30 minutes to get it perfectly flush but it was to no avail. Do you just use some kind of adhesive? I might want to redo mine in the future so I don't want them permanently stuck on there. Thanks!

I am not sure about the rear one...but the front grille one, I used thin strips of regular double-faced tape, worked great.
Oh yeah, thanks for the drilling advice for the rear badge ;)

It has a small layer of adhesive on both sides, with a little bit of foam in between...same thickness as the stock adhesive tape, like maybe 2mm. I bought it at a local hardware store, I don't have the packaging anymore sorry bro!

Something I don't quite understand... Is the purpose of drilling it to create holes for prying? Or reduce suction?

^correct. There is basically no way you could pry off the emblem from the front so you must push it off from behind through the holes you drill.

What size holes are we talking about here? Drill into the back portion of the trunk into those 2 posts? There's not a hole lot of room back there. I don't see how that won't go through the surfice and into the inside of the emblem and then to apply enough pressure to push the front part off?

AHHHH! No, don't drill into the trunk, or the posts. Take off the badge first. Then drill holes in the metal backing plate of the badge, BETWEEN the posts but not through the whole badge. Then push off the front of the badge through the hole you drilled. Just drill holes big enough to poke through with a nail, or small screwdriver or something like that. Here is a pic I borrowed from someone in the post and edited to show where to drill:

the holes should be about the size of a pencil's eraser end. That would actually be a pretty good tool to get it off come to think of it. You DO NOT want to drill the holes in the posts. I drilled 3 holes, one at the left side, right side and middle. These holes will be wider than the ridges, but don't worry about them just drill! Try not to drill near any of the stars so you don't chip the chrome paint. The black/blue paint on the back is okay to drill into a little bit because once you paint over it you won't be able to see minor scratches. Just drill slowly until you are through the backing plate and you can fit a tool in there to push it out.
That should do it, hopefully you can figure it out!

so when you drill do you drill through the blue plastic? and is heating necessary?
| sperry7 | 07-25-2006 10:01 PM |
The blue plastic? I think you are referring to the Plastic backplate that is chrome but underneath is a light blue color... not sure though. Once you drill through this chrome/blueish plastic backplate you come to the back of the emblem...this is also a dark blue almost black color. That is where the drilling stops, and the pushing begins.
Personally, I heated mine up although I can't tell you if it helped or not but I popped mine off in 5 minutes of pushing. It didn't hurt anything if that helps.

Is there a way we can paint the stars as well?
So from what I've gathered in this topic is that ..
Once you have the Back Emblem off .. You drill holes in the middle. Push it off and than you can just paint the background to w/e color you want. What would you do to make it stick back on??
For the front emblem, you can just heat it up and take it apart with something like fishing line? Again, how would you keep it back on?

I'm doing my emblems as we speak. Not as easy as I thought it would be.
Here's what I did to get off teh front and back: for both, use some strong floss or fishing line (good mechanics gloves will keep your fingers from squeezed to death) and work it behind the emblem, pulling up a side enough to get a credit card or something similarly thin under the badge and then peal back slowly. You'll be fighting uber super sticky Subaru tape. Note on the front, start w/ the driver side. The Passenger side has 2 pin tabs that go into the grill mount that will keep you from really getting behind it w/ the floss or card.
Becareful drilling the holes!!! Doesnt take much. I went to far and punched through the inner surface. Luckily I was using a small bit. I actually found it easier to drill toward the out sides and prying it off that way nail from behind applying pressure. This is more uber super sticky that you have to fight.
To paint the stars just sand them too though it'd take some good painting to get them looking sharp. I'm redoing my rear one, and thought about doing the stars black w/a a painted silver background.
Edit: Also, on the sand paper use something between 160 and 200. I'm using 220, thinking that it'd be smoother but it doesn't seem to matter, only adding more time to the process.
If ya need some pics to illistrate any of the steps, let me know since they are all still in pieces sitting on my dinning table at home right now.

^^ Yoo Shin...
The front badge is MUCH easier to get off if you take off the front grille, and the black plastic behind the badge, and just push the posts out the back with a screwdriver. ;) No need for fishing line for the front. As for the sandpaper, I used 80 grit and 120 grit....200 will take a long time to get the paint off! Yes teh 80 and 120 will leave scratches in back of the clear plastic, but they go away when you paint it. The front still looks sparkly and smooth and shiny after.

Use some double-sided automotive tape from autozone etc. 3m stuff is good. Thinner is better... I had to redo mine because the tape was thick and didn't sit flush with the trunk/front badge holder.
In regards to painting the chrome stars: You can do it and I inadvertently chipped some of the chrome will sanding. It takes more work to get it all off because of the location in the grooves, but It would be worth it. I am going to paint my stars this weekend most likely. (grey stars/black background) Kinda a theme on my car...
Sanding- While I re-did my back badge I tried sanding with a little goo-gone sprayed on and it speeded up the process significantly. It penetrates the scratches and makes it much easier to sand off.

Well, you paint the backside of the badge, so the chrome paint is still there, and you paint over the whole backside until it is covered well. No clear coat...since you aren't looking at the back where you painted, and the front side is clear plastic already.

If your badge is scratched up like mine was, try getting this kit. It is called a headlight restoration kit by Permatex that I picked up for $15 at murray's. It worked really well.

Ok, my rear looks like pooh. I try to do it silver and you can see all the sanding and paint strokes. I would just do it again but the emblem wont sit flush w/ the car any more either nor will the center part sit flush with the silver badge. I must have warped both
Guess I'll just order a new one and keep it stock  What was that part number subiegal?

Before you give up try and sand the back down with a finer sandpaper. Once you get all your paint off put some clearcoat down until it is smooth. This will fill in the scratches from sanding and create a uniform surface. You should put on at least 2-3 coats of the silver to make it look real sharp. I just purchased some goop automotive adhesive to put my badges on instead of the double sided tape so it will sit flush. I will let you know how that goes. It will come off with high heat if I decide to change my badges up in the future.

Yeah I might give it another try. I got a bunch of 100 and 220 paper I could use. I'll just paint it black though since I don't think the silver looks good anyways. Not like it does on esseme's Steel Grey. An adhesive sounds like a better idea too since the double sticky, as thin as it is, is still to think and makes both parts protrude.

you might want to try something even finer than that... like 600 or so if they aren't huge gashes. If you have a good range of papers you should start coarse then work to the finer grits.
I sanded the front of mine starting with 1000 and that was almost too coarse with out damaging it more.

I got your PM. Sorry, thought you're talking about painting the front emblem.
for the rear it's tricky and I don't think it can be done w/out damaging the inner surface a little. You want to drill holes very slowly and lightly. It's been suggested that a eraser size hole is best and I would agree as long as you can get a whole that size without hitting the inner surface. I did a small whole along the side of the emblem so I could get a small dry wall nail through and push up from the corner. Once it started prying off (it's on there really good) I just pulled it apart like an oreo cookie.
