Lowering My Stock Seat

this cars only fault to me is the height of the seat. with a helmet i hit the ceiling. i have heard of a guy 6' 6" that had a bracket custom made to lower the seat a couple of inches. that is what i am setting out to do, anybody know anybody that has done this or can do this??????
i like the stock seats and the airbag....so i desire to keep the stock seats
thanks

I am interested as well. With my helmet on an extra 1/2-3/4 of an inch of clearance would be nice.

If I can do the same on my 04 JDM seat in my 00 car...

I'm interested as well. I'm 6'4, and with a sunroof, my helmet hit the roof of the car. I didn't have this problem in my non-sunroofed 02.

You guys DO know about the driver's seat height adjuster, right (I was driving it for a couple of months before I even noticed the lever there!)??
| ilnmcom | 04-22-2005 04:10 AM |
There are only four bolts holding that seat onto there. I'm sure you could modify the bracket without too much effort. The seat is really easy to take out (though your AIRBAG light stays on afterwards if you unplug the seat).
Just be careful as you want that sucker to hold on while you're racing/auto-x'in.

yes, there's a height adjuster. although for these tall guys, sounds like they would need more clearance anyway. :(
and for those who don't know, there's a big ol lever on the left side of the driver seat. you pump it up for the seat to go up, you pump it down to make the seat go lower. it's in the manual though, and EVERYbody read the manual right? ;)

That's hilarious. Man, I would have been like, "Holy cow! A whole new feature!"
Seat height is an issue for me too becuase I went from a very very low sports car to the more upright sedan feel of the Scoobie. Night and Day. I'm going to take a look today and see if I can unbolt the seat, drill some new holes, and lower that puppy. If I can, I'll post some pics of the mod.

For real...and I *did* make a point of reading the owners manual, too...even for stuff that I didn't have
To stay on topic, I don't _think_ there's much you can do to lower the front seats--I had them out, along with carpet etc, doing deadening last summer. I wasn't specifically looking for lowering, so I might be wrong on that. There's some raised cross-portions of the floor pan under both seats, and there's not a whole lot of clearance as is.
One caveat: be VERY careful when you go to put the seat mounting bolts back in...they are fine pitch, and easy to cross thread. Use a flashlight to see that the bracket & mount holes are lined up, or you may not feel a mis-thread starting (guess how I know this!). If it starts feeling smeary, back out and clean up the bolt threads before it gets too far gone. I'd also recommend some loctite on the bolts...my driver's seat was loose at one point, even tho I'd torqued to spec.

It looks like Myles is/was going to work on this. But unfortunately it sounds like the seat rails part is being delayed until after racing season according to some correspondance I had with him. I for one would love to see this happen sooner though. Maybe if some more folks ask for it he might bump it up on the priority list.

I replaced my STi seats with aftermarket sport seats. Its about the only way to get any lower. I will go look at my drivers seat, since its in my basement, and I will confirm this. Great idea, you should market it and make millions. Your audience could be all those people that don't wan't to fuss with their seat brackets and would rather cut their roof off instead.

I'll be lowering my seat...
...but I can swap a '98-'02 Forester seat base onto my OE driver's seat and get the dual adjustment knobs for front/rear bottom seat cushion height/angle. :)
(It's the same as the passenger's side adjustment on the JDM WRX/STi seats from the GC cars. Which of course were driver's seats overseas--RHD cars.)

Off a tangent, I would like to lower the roof of my car. It looked too damn tall compared to the low hood. Springs could only do so much. Maybe shave 4 inches off the top. It'll give it a sharper windshield angle too.

We are refocusing our efforts on this seat project , but legally anyone who makes a bracket for the street is risky without a ton of disclosures. As this would work with your airbag in an accident. So the insurance companies would be looking for a "way out". Thats the reality of it. But the same thing for competition only would be great, as it would have a harness used with it and prob a roll cage of some type.
