March Gran Turismo Challenge part 4

rt4me 03-09-2007 09:12 PM

I tried the mixed tire type and although I thought the car was more fun to drive the times went up a little. Maybe someone else will have better luck.
nerdydorkus 03-10-2007 02:02 AM

man i cant get below 1:07.7
MattDell 03-10-2007 02:36 PM
I'll have to give those a try - if I improve I'll give you credit! ;)
Haha, I really think the 11 understeer is the key. This car DEFINITELY likes to understeer.

And yes, Super Soft on F/R.

MattDell 03-10-2007 05:42 PM

Quicker! I think this is gonna be my official time... it was a very clean run!

damn you guys are good.... 1:09:855...
when you say we can alter the weight "balance" can we LIGHTEN the car?
I left mine a porker (untouched)...
scrwrx 03-10-2007 08:17 PM

I got 1'06.xxx after maybe like 10 laps or so. i think i should be able to squeeze out another second or so if I can take every corner perfectly.

I want a Deep Forest challenge. :)
bitterWRX 03-10-2007 08:30 PM

I want Trial Mountain! :D

He means you can add weight in the car settings menu where it allows adding a "balast" in whatever amount of weight you want to the front or rear to balance the car.

*hint* a little weight on the rear helps turn-in dramatically with this car

and i'm down to 106.11

That's it. I'm done with this POS. I must be missing a major trick with this track or car.

No driver's aids. No ballast. Same tires front/rear.

No kidding. I can only drive the thing for 10 laps or so before getting frustrated enough to say "Forget it. I play this game to have fun. I'm not having fun. *click*" :furious:
LatentWagen 03-11-2007 01:50 PM

i think there are a number of turns where the best-looking or more conventional line doesn't always set you up correctly for the next, more important corner.
also, a little added weight actually helped me. i was able to shave .3+ off of the final hairpin alone with a ballast on the rear...
RexInit 03-11-2007 02:36 PM

i definetly can't get into the 1:05 thats damn good matt. I tried again for like 30-40 laps and couldn't even get to my 1:06.132 time again. I admit defeat on this track....but i will get you next time!:furious:

Hmmmm, that bothers me. I want everyone to have fun with this. I'm personally having a great time with this car/track combination.

You or Gary, care to elaborate on what's frustrating or not fun? Anything I can improve for next week?

I had no ballast, racing softs front and rear, and driver aids at 3 Understeer, 2 Oversteer, 1 TCS. Granted, you are faster already - so I don't know if I'm telling you much. It wants to understeer like a pig, that's for sure.

I like this track, and a fast car for me is more fun - I typically don't like the low-powered car challenges.

why not use the best tires? with the r5's you don't need any driver aids. as for understeer, try some weight in the back and a little flick into the coners.
GarySheehan 03-11-2007 04:40 PM

Any driver aides, ballast or tire changes I make to the car just slow it down dramatically. Even with Understeer set to 1, the speed difference at the Start/Finish line for me is something like 3-4 mph. My non-assisted ghost just walks away from me. Same thing if I put 20 lbs of ballast in the car.

I get frustrated with this car because it never does what I want it to. It's a heavy understeering car to drive than never rewards the driver.

try turning your understeer assist up to 10 and oversteer off. with traction control at 1 or 0 however you like it.
MattDell 03-11-2007 05:46 PM

Yeah, the car really doesn't understeer much with understeer set to around 10. I had mine at 11. It was night/day when I did it.

Same for me. I used the R5 tires with no aids and got my fastest time. Then went to R5 front, R4 rear. It was more fun to drive but the times went up. Then tried R5 all around with Understeer aid bumped up to various levels (from 5 to 15). Again, seemed to help the feel but had slower times. I keep coming back to R5 tires and no aids.

I like the course, always have. I just don't care much for the car. Or maybe just this car on this course.
try turning your understeer assist up to 10 and oversteer off. with traction control at 1 or 0 however you like it.
I tried all that. Any time I had any understeer aid on at all, the light in the lower left corner of the dash would flash if there was any steering lock in at all. Even the two sweepers after the hairpin coming on to the front straight, that light would be flashing and the engine would cut power. I would cross start/finish and just watch my non-assisted ghost get 5 carlengths on me before the first corner!

Maybe there's something messed up with my driving aids. But any time they are on at all (even Understeer at 1!), the car is dog slow.

I'm sorry - I meant super soft (R5). I may try to go with no aids at all, maybe TCS at 1 or something. It's strange, with all that power, and the TCS off, you *still* can't provoke this thing into power-on oversteer.

So it doesn't seem like I'm getting lower than 1'06.112. :( This car sucks. I'm still going to try to break 1'05 but doesn't look easy.
MattDell 03-12-2007 09:59 PM

So many people hate this car. I found it to be quite balanced, but maybe it's my driving style.
sirfrankwilliams 03-12-2007 10:56 PM

Driving this car is definitely work. But with hints about ballast, weight balance, aids and such (plus a great many laps) have been able to come down a few seconds. So I am making progress, although I prolly won't be contending for any points.
lil'redwagon 03-12-2007 11:01 PM

my best was 1'08.372. probably no points for me again!! i feel like takuma sato!

I'm going to wait for the next challenge. 1:06.998 will be my time.

recnelis 03-13-2007 08:21 PM

Just submitted my 1:06.669.

The day MattDell announced week 2, I played and got that time within 15 laps. Couldn't do any better than ~1:06.7 today. I had so much understeer in the turn after the "tunnel" and that hairpin...
ScubaruImpreza05 03-13-2007 08:46 PM

So, what's the next challenge? Hopefully the car will be cheaper haha. I didn't have enough time to earn money for the McLaren :(
nick735 03-13-2007 09:22 PM

Since F1 starts this week, why dont we time attack in the f1 car!!!!!
sirfrankwilliams 03-13-2007 09:32 PM

Is there just one F1 car or a few?
MattDell 03-13-2007 09:40 PM

Only one F1 car. Multiple colors, though. And you can't change the oil, ever. So, you kind have to keep winning them to have a competitive car.

I'm undecided on the F1 car. They're a real bitch to get if you haven't progressed far into the game. And some people are saying they had a hard enough time getting the SLR. Still, there's multiple ways of getting money in this game, so I really don't think that's a good excuse. But getting an F1 car doesn't involve money, it involves progress.

So yeah, I'm sorta trying to stay away from cars you can't actually purchase. Prize cars are a bit of a grey area thus far. :o

I have next week's challenge picked out. Hopefully everyone will like it! Lots of customization will be allowed, so regardless of the car choice, everyone should be able to set it up however they please.

And yes, I'm very open to suggestions as asked earlier. ;)

yea stay away from the f1 car...because im not that far lol. I'm sure a lot of other people are in the same boat. I had to earn money for the SLR but i can earn money prety fast. All you have to do is the 24 hour of the ring and b-spec it....

I just wanted to share some of the problems we had with "dishonest" people when we did a Gran Turismo challenge on evom.... The last two challenges you did involved stock cars...this is great until someone desides to add mods when they cant beat others times. My solution to this is to allow FULL modification of the vehicle (minus nitrous), otherwise you will always get cheaters...... What I would do is allow full modification but make people show screen shots of of their lap that prove the car they used (ghost), and that they didnt use nitrous (there wont be a nitrous level meter on the side of the tach). I dunno just some suggestions....
