How To: Custom Installed Yakima Rack part 7
How long does it take to put on/remove?
Alone, I can pull them off in 5-7 minutes. Putting them on takes about 10, with all the adjusting and whatnot.

bump.
From what I investigated this is the cleanset setup I have found. I like how the clips sit on the inside of the molding and there is no need to cut them. I work at a bike shop and am going through all the different manufacturers and since Yakima dose not make the SST's anymore I think I am going to have to order something older on ebay.
My question is, does anyone know if the control towers will fit on our sedans. I know they fit on 08+ but my main goal is to make my rack as low-pro as possible and this is what Yakima has for thier new line of towers for facory rails.

If not what are the demensions that were used to cut the Y3 clips to make the SST to fit on.
I am not sure what clip it was I used. I called a gal on ebay who was selling them and we went through a bunch of used ones she had laying around. I told her what I needed and she came up with those.

I had to grind them down to about an inch but they work great.

I was for sure not going to mount thouse clips on the outside of the rain gutters. IMO that looks like it is not supposed to be there. I have one more set of 4 clips but they need to be drilled out for the locking mechanism if you plan on locking them to the roof like I did. The first set she sent did not have holes for the locks, These are the spare ones I have sitting around.

I have never removed my setup ever since I put it on over a year ago. I love it and it holds my kmx kart and bike very well.

Next time I put my Kart and bike on the STI I will have to post up a pic or two. It looks badass and lots of people stare!!

i ordered 2 sets of y3 clips (hoping those are the correct ones) i ran across them on the net (super hard to find)

so hopefully when they come they are the correct ones.
the clip # should be stamped in the backside of the clip.
.saint 04-13-2009 04:38 PM

clips and sst towers came in today. the y3 clips are the correct ones that '2.5 turbo hyped' mentioned earlier in the thread. i was a little leery at first not being able to find pictures of the clips before the purchase. got 4 brand new y3 clips super cheap along with brand new sst towers.

waiting on the load bars, load warrior basket, and the lockjaw bike racks. should hopefully be on soon

so I know this thread seems to have been through a few revisions, whats the current best clips to mod/attach a roof rack to a wrx?
garretts77 04-16-2009 12:32 PM

I recently did the original setup: Qtowers, Q7 clips and it works well. I bought my rack two autumns ago, and I was originally using the Yakima preferred install. I was never happy with it. It would pull the black moulding around the windows way up, and it still moved. I had two snowboards on and the front Qtowers moved toward the rear of the car by like 7 inches! I had it professionally installed at a local rack shop too, and I double checked the measurements to make sure they were what Yakima recommended. I feel much more comfortable with the Q7 clips...

.saint,
Where did you end up finding the Y3 clips? I've been searching for some with no luck.

Thanks!!

anyone looking for this setup?
I have a set of SST towers and y-3 clips that I got used without knowing what they are. I found this forum when searching to see if they would still be useful to anybody. If anyone is interested, you can see them here. http://sacramento.craigslist.org/spo/1175928662.html . I'm in Sacramento, CA, will be in the Bay Area this weekend, and I can also work out shipping to elsewhere.

Sorry to jump in with this as my first post, but I hope somebody who reads this forum can put these to good use.

I installed my SST towers and Y3 clips today, and I will post pics later tonight.

I have one concern however. When I tighten down the towers so they are secure, my roof appears to deflect down slightly. If I loosen the clips so the roof doesn't deflect, the towers don't seem secure enough. Is anyone else having roof issues? I don't want to dent mine!

Mine are in about the same spot yours are though. If I move them closer together, wont that move them closer to the middle of the roof and cause more deflection?

TRY IT!!!!!

There is a very small window of where they will sit perfectly flat, you either have them too far apart or too close together. Go out and mess with them until you get it fixed, Do not risk denting the roof.

I dunno  The roof seems to deflect easily if I push on it lightly, or push down on the rack at all. I am worried that the weight of the bike on the rack will dent the roof.
.saint 05-21-2009 07:17 PM

mine pushes in a bit but nothing major. im not really concerned because its not going to leave a crease or nothing and a bathroom plunger could probably pull out the indent if there is any.

Sounds about the same as mine. Well, I drove the bike home on the roof last night without caving the roof in. I guess I will leave it as is for now, if it becomes a problem I will adjust it.

Noah 05-31-2009 11:29 PM

Thanks! My only question/concern, is that it looks like the rack doesn't sit all the way down on the roof. Its really darn close, but when I wiggle the crossbar I can see the towers lift a bit. I was previously using the Q78 clips to mount under the window.

Currently using the Q7 clips and all other items mentioned in the OP.

Mine did the same thing when the towers were too close outwards to the doors. When I moved them slightly inboard, they were tighter to the roof.
Noah 05-31-2009 11:45 PM

Thanks for the tip. I have to take it all apart to paint the clips anyways so I'll just move the towers while I have it off.

09' factory rack
anyone know how to convert thule (sq bar) accessories (snowboard rack, yakima basketcase, & thule fairing) to the new 09' factory bars? there has to be some sort of adapter for both yakima/thule accessories, i just cant find it (either can the "expert" at REI). sorry i "thread jacked", but this is my first post and apparently you need 3 before the site lets you out into the wild world of posting your own thread.

I have a local who works in the rack business....perhaps he'll let me test one out
bdj238 06-14-2009 06:11 PM

I think bmw has had something along the line of the little door for removing racks for sometime now but it may be completely different.

any how my main question is for the wagon owners who have done this. I carry multiple kayaks of varying lengths at any given time at speeds of 75+. I have noticed that there is ALWAYS an issue with opening the hatch with the boats on my yakima rack. (installed on factory rails) Would this mod, or is there a variation to this mod, that would raise it HIGHER, not lower, to accommodate this issue. If it won't help with the hatch issue then I think I'll probably stick with the factory rails for now. $$ is already invested with those clips vs spending more for a different setup..
CF-Ninja 06-22-2009 11:04 PM

Yah... so I broke one of the plastic tension bracket things when I was locking down the rack on my car tonight. I guess I'm due for a new set of towers anyways... These have been on 4 different cars and were purchased in 2004. The plastic was getting a little bit sun rotted.

I just did this install today. I am used Yakima Q7 clips and followed the instructions in this thresad. Excellent write up. Went very smoothly.

FYI - you dont have to remove the weather stripping. I just found the brackets by sliding a knife along until it stopped. I then just inserted the Q7 clips and attached the rack.

Rails or towers?
I plan to add racks so I can carry a cargo box and 2 bike racks- possibly all at the same time.

I have a Saab 9-2X and am leaning towards putting on the factory Impreza rails and then Thule Rapid base system clamped to that.

The one thing I'm concerned about is the load rating on the rails. I've read in a few places that the load limit for the factory system is 100 lbs. BUT, is this referring to the factory crossbars or the rails themselves? It seems to me the factory rails are pretty solid and would offer the best load resistance compared to any aftermarket towers that clamp above the window.

I've searched this and came up with conflicting info. Is there anyone here with experience using the factory rails for loads well over 100 lbs?

I'm also wondering how well long cargo boxes work with Thule or Yakima base systems clamped onto the rails. I know I may have to put up with interference as far as opening the hatch but I'm willing to live with that in order to accomodate long items in the box.

I'm also strongly considering jSavages' custom install- great solution! You're a real asset to this community! (spoken by a newbie with only a couple posts :D) I'll gladly send you some bucks if this is the route I decide to go.

Also, is it dangerous to hang a box quite a ways out over the hood or is the issue more wind drag and resulting poor fuel economy?

P.S. I'll be posting in the Buy/Sell forums on this but might as well add here that I'm looking to swap my rail delete moldings from a Sabb 9-2X for Impreza roof rails- hopefully I can find someone in the Vancouver Lower Mainland who's interested- please PM if you are.
CF-Ninja 02-05-2010 10:52 PM

Scavman, Its not dangerous to hang something over your hood as long as it is properly secured to the bars and tied down in the front like you see my kayak above. I dove about 60 miles at 70mph like that and it wasn't even moving in the wind.

Wow just wow you are one of the few that A) is smart enough to tie bow/Stern's down. B) Great usage of the front tow hook.

A lot of new cars have no where to place bow stern tie downs so these are a way to get tied down.

Ninja if you find it's to tight for two kayaks this is also a good option! Yakima Bowdown

Also here is a link for some other regular rack set ups as well as some custom ones!

I wouldn't think to move my 15 foot kayak without the tie down. I can lift the front of it a good 4 to 5 inches without that tie down. I also use a rear tie down to the back tow hook. The short kayak i don't use a tie down, I just ratchet it down really tight and it doesn't move.

I do need to get some stackers. I can fit 3 kayaks on my roof with a stacker. I just had the saddles from my dad's truck.
