I kinda chortled at the H-T guys in awe over 430hp.
edit: finished DL'ng video. Looks like the turn in was a bit early on the first few corners, some serious understeer before he wrecked. I bet he's thanking his hide for the rollcage!

That's just the rollbar padding.
The main hoop has nicks in it that don't look like metal.

If you are referring to the gaps seen in the "tubes" at the end of the video after the camera was knocked to the ceiling view, what you are seeing is the rollcage padding not the steel itself.
Edit: Beat by maxQ.

EVOs are fast. STis are fast. Bad stuff happens on track. More badder stuff happens when you are moving that fast.
This wreck would have been ugly without that cage. Like "just pull the hearse straight up to the track" ugly.
I see waaaay too many EVOs and STis at track days without even rollbars. Get your safety equipment squared away before you worry about whatever 2,402,342 hp turbo you want to bolt on.

While I'm not a road racer, it would make me second guess some things after hearing these two things from what I imagine were the course workers.....
1. "How do you work this thing" (referring to the window net)
2. "Wheres the kill switch to kill the battery"
I thought the kill switch was supposed to be labeled with a big red arrow and big red switch.
Maybe the guy asking wasnt actually a real course worker, dont know..... It just made me wonder.....

dont wonder. there are lots of different ways to attach and mount a window net. hell most racers have a hard time attaching it when they know how it works.
kill switches may or may not be installed, and they may or may not be labelled. even if labelled, it could be in a totally different part of the car

Admittedly, I've never been to Buttonwillow, but I can see where he got his nickname.
With as consistently and as badly early apexing as it looks like he was, I'd give him 3 laps before putting the car on its roof in West Bend if he was ever to drive Lime Rock. This guy really needs to learn how to drive, and has no business being in a car with power.

you can drive well too!
I have never been to that track so I'll just add that it looked like he was turning in WAY to early (but again i have never been there). Another thing i noticed is it looked like he was going off 1) I wonder if he knew he was going off 2) he should have gotten off the gas and went off and then come back on. Its better to be safe than sorry really.
And I'm glad he is ok..

It's to bad there whole team is a bunch of a-holes. It seems like at every regional event were always next to each other, and I get to hear how full of them selves they are all day :) And from what I've heard, it's all the driver that is keeping the team down. If they didn't act like they were the most important team of the weekend, they would probably be more popular.

That sucks, luckily he is ok. I am not sure I like the look of all the run off there. You think with that much $ and time into the car and whatnot, that they could get hooked up with a good instructor to teach the line.... oh well.

STi's have the built-in reinforced ring structure around the B-pillar, roof, and floor sections. I wonder how much this protects the driver/passenger. Read somewhere that rescue crews have difficulty cutting through these layers with the jaws of life. Of course a roll bar/cage gives much more protection on the track but can do serious damage to occupants in street crashes.

I don't think the driver was particularly jerky, or that the car was "all over the place", but he clearly was way early on his apexes. You can see where the "rubbered in" portion of the line is, and he was turning in way before it every time. I thought his inputs were pretty smooth - the only quick movements of the wheel I saw were in response to the car bouncing around mid-turn on the not-so-smooth Willow pavement. Nothing unusual there. Even after watching the video a few times I'm surprised at how quickly the car came across the track when he put the two wheels off. He didn't make any abrupt inputs to jerk the car back on track, and it doesn't sound to me like he tried to power through it, just a little steering input and zoom! off he went to the other side.
The rollcage did hold up amazingly well. I couldn't believe the pictures - the back of the car is just gone! Nonetheless, the driver clearly got his bell rung. Pretty scary the moaning/groaning sounds, and then restarting the car - that could have been a big problem. Obviously he was out of it at that point, good that he is apparently OK.

the ring structure is definately a fantastic saftey feature to have ....for 35 mph accidents that it was designed for. There is no replacement on a racetrack for a proper rollbar or rollcage. I understand its difficult to make the compromise between street vehicle and track vehicle, but a rollbar is not a danger on a street wreck. The option that most come to eventually is the need for a seperate track car.

Putting your hands on the roof is a natural reaction to rolling your car. Takes training and experience to let go of the wheel and cross your arms across your chest.
Not only did he early apex 9, he wasn't anywhere near using all of the available track on driver's left.

Wow tough crowd. Have to say that in my experience at the track, Kent has always been very friendly and gracious. John tends to rub a lot of people the wrong way, but I think few that have dealt with him would doubt his chassis tuning abilities. That said, it's very easy to to second guess a driver's abilities in a short video where an accident takes place. At least Kent gets out there and competes which is more than I can say for most of the folks out in internetland.

Hook us all up with a sponsor (or sponsors) and a decent paycheck to be able to run, combine that with being able to take time off from work to race and travel to events on workdays... and you'll see more of us out there.
For most of us unwashed heathens, it's not THAT simple.
Otherwise... I find that statement and comparison very poor and holier than thou. I expect better from you than to see something like that.
About the video... many that have watched it and commented on it have track expereince. Sure, there are some that have never been on a track... but WTF.. it's not HARD to see someone early apexing a corner from an in-car camera.

I also don't think he's too bad. Problem is that everybody going to Big Willow should know you just cannot early apex Turn 9 there. There is no good results that can come out of that.

About the video... many that have watched it and commented on it have track expereince. Sure, there are some that have never been on a track... but WTF.. it's not HARD to see someone early apexing a corner from an in-car camera.

There are more classes out there than the ones Kent runs. Pickup a copy of Grassroots Motorsports. You'll find that many fiscally challened race enthusisasts manage to get out there. My point was that many people sit on the sidelines and criticise because it's much easier than getting up off your bum and doing.
You expect better of me? You don't know me so how can you expect anything.
Again, my point was that it is very easy to second guess and criticise. For those who actually race, and I recognize a few well respected names in this thread, please tell me you've never made a bad mistake on the track yourselves.

I can't believe no one noticed that the tube that is in the frame after the roll over was only tack welded in!!!!! Makes me wonder about the rest of the cage. I know that in my rally car all of the tubes are TIG welded ALL the way around the tube, cars will not pass any tech inspection if any of the tubes are half welded let alone tack welded. I can see from the other pictures that the cage did work, but it doesn't look like he took that hard of a hit to the roof. That is where my concern lies, just wondering about the tubes being completely welded.
just inquiring
You'll find that many fiscally challened race enthusisasts manage to get out there.
When I see that it costs upwards of $1000 per race, counting gas, hotel, travel, entry fees, brake pads, rotors, general pre-track maintenance, time from work, membership.... $1000 per race is STILL too expensive for MOST people.
What someone calls 'fiscally challenged' is still 'too much' for others is all I'm saying.
Heck, just to auto-x in Topeka this year it's going to be about $800 in gas ALONE for me to tow the car out there and back.
Those that make it, fine. But believe me, there are more people that WANT to be out there than those that CAN be out there.
I've known you on the forums for a long time. So yeah, I sort of know you. Your online persona anyways.

First off let me post this since no one else has.
THIS VIDEO IS FROM JANUARY 2005!!!!
Kent was a novice driver and had never even competed in a SCCA race before. He was a new driver and was still learning how to race and what the proper line was. How do you expext anyone to learn how to drive without going out and actually doing it?
We run video in the car so John (My Boss and driving instructor) can crituique his line and make him faster without having to ride in the car incase someting like this happens
All these pepole on here talking **** yet no one has posted any current video? Whats the deal, you all want to rip on the EVO crew that has a driver that has finaly got his stuff together?
If your all such great racers why dont you come out to a race and show us how its really done? Im not saying to come out and run a full season but just do 1 race...... 1 race to show us the proper line and how to go fast. And your also welome to come to Thunderhill, Laguna Seca, and Seiers Point and beat our lap reacords in class.
"20 wins"
Nice to forget the fact that usually ITE is 1 or 2 cars.

1 or 2 cars... are you high? When was the last time you checked the results in a SCCS SFR ITE race? We start with a very large feild so I dont know where you get 1 or 2 cars
and BTW, its 20 straight wins for Kent now...... not just 20
It's to bad there whole team is a bunch of a-holes. It seems like at every regional event were always next to each other, and I get to hear how full of them selves they are all day :) And from what I've heard, it's all the driver that is keeping the team down. If they didn't act like they were the most important team of the weekend, they would probably be more popular.

Sorry if you think were a bunch of "A-holes". We love what were out here doing and take a ton of pride in it. We are so pumped when we get off the track who knows what we say. Every race this year we have run 2 classes (ITE and SP) and havent had any problems yet. If you only knew the work it takes to make a EVO run that hard and long you would have a tottaly different outlook on our program. If you want to come by at the next race Id really like to talk to you and show you the real us.... cause you obviously dont know me or the rest of my team very well
