Solberg off on SS7! Damaged the left corners of the car pretty good but will be able to continue according to SWRT. Still finnished the stage sitting in 8th. Loeb quicker the hell again.

Solber not rattled
Yes! Solberg back in points after staying in the top 5 fastest times during the rest of Leg 2! A pity about his spin. All things staying the same, had he not spun, he'd likely be in third, but points are VERY good.
Tommi reckons it's possible to catch Loeb tomorrow but still, 28 seconds is 28 seconds. What an awesome start to the season! Can't wait till tomorrow morning!
BTW, Loix says his foot is bruised and he'll likely be ready for Sweden.

Richard is about 21 sec behind Petter, I think Petter still stand a chance.
Does Tommi still have a chance to win? 28 sec behind the hotshop Loeb?

I think Sebastian may push to hard and lose some time in a spin or something. I don't see him crashing out tho.
I think Tommi will push REALLY hard, considering if he crashes out it's only the first rally so it won't matter much PLUS Colin is down on the leader board so he won't be that far behind in the points (I don't see Sebastian winning the championship, so I don't think Tommi should be worried if he crashes out)

I dunno, I think that I would have to disagree totally with that. Look how close the championship came last year going into the final round. Something like five drivers still had a mathematical chance of winning the championship, so not only does every rally count, every single point counts, no matter if it's 1st place or 6th place. One of the reasons why I am very happy when we score any points in a rally, but many others here look at a non-podium finnish as a dissapointment
But FWIW, Makinen already stated he is going to be in "full attack" mode and drive for the win tomorrow. Hopefully he can put some pressure on the youngster and cause him to slip up. We'll see :)

Yes I think Loeb is a fantastic driver. And I would like to see how Tommi can beat him in tomorrow's race.
I don't want to see Loeb crash. Just like I didn't want to see Richard won last year by having Tommi and Colin crashed.
I think Tommi should push tomorrow, but not at the risk of crashing. Even if he gets 2 place, he still wins 6 points. That's actually a lot, consider last year's top drivers had only around 40. Beside, he won Rally Monte Carlo for the last 4 years, crashing this one is bad for him and the team.
but let him out drive Loeb, don't hope that Loeb spins.
By "slip up" I meant screw up as in a young guy who may not be used to the pressure of a four-time WRC Champion breathing down his neck, thus causing a mental break down. Whether that means Loeb starting to drive more cautious(aka-slower) and have Tommi catch and pass him, or just have Loeb get rattled enough that he spins or whatever, I'll take either. Either way, chances are the Finn in the Subaru will have an effect on Loeb's performance tomorrow. You don't have to be faster then your opponent to "out drive" him.
And don't get me wrong, I wish the best for all the WRC drivers and hope they all finnish each rally safe and injury free.
I'm sure Loeb's drive this weekend proves his insanely quick drive in a WRC car last year was no fluke. I'm sure he has a promising future in the WRC. But if there is a Subaru still driving on four wheels, ain't no way in hell I'm rooting for someone else! ;)

Subaru needs at least one more respectable driver in order to compete for the manufaturer's championship. Peter and Tommi are good but they are only two against teams such as Peugeut and Ford.

First, a question for john Felstead... It looks like all the cars have the little Silver Box on the roof just over the driver. Is this a part of the Virt. Spect? I noticed on some cars it's been painted(a blue Pug), but most look like it was left as raw metal. And on the same note, there were a few computer generated airial views of the stages that had a nice clean, yet abstracted character to them - I couldn't help wondering if those were another effect of the Virtual Spectator...
As for Loeb. Sure he's not on my team, but if there is ever a sport where respecting the tallent of the sportsman is more important than the team they play for, auto racing is it. And Rally all the more. Loed, if your reading this, PROPS!! Good show. If you maintain this performance I will not be surprised when you capture the Driver's Champ. And probably the Manuf... But it IS a little early to start talking about that stuff(besides, my Subie friends, I'm jinxing the poor kid)
Rock On Makinen!!! He's FAST today! I say, so what if he didn't get much closer to the lead.... Look at 3rd place, they are just under two MINUTES back from Tommi. Not bad. I loved watching the in-cars with Makinen, that scowl was great, you could practicaly smell his desire to win. PLUS the man had best time on three of todays stages, in a new car, that says something right there. [Matrix quote]He's... a machine[/Matrix quote]
It's become a race between the best, and the rest. I'm glad to see Sainz leading the rest. A month or two back a few I-Club members told me that Sainz was aging and approaching the end of his productive years. I'd say he's still worth having on the team. GO SAINZ!!! To bad he's driving that dumb Ford. It's the only car I actively do not like in the WRC. If only the power steering had held up through yesterday... I kind of think that messed with his rhythm...
So, uh, I was wondering... With the new rules, and specificaly the one about donuts... Was Colin penalized for that donut? He realy should have been... I like that replay they keep using, when McRae was on that winning streak last year, and they win another rally, Grist is like, "Well done. Well done..." up two notches on the sarcastic meter, "Well done, PALL"
-Silas, LOVING THE NEW COVERAGE. Growing rally fan.

Looks like Loeb is going to be penalized...
Citroën screwed up...
The tyres on Loeb's car were apparently changed in an unauthorised area, in fact right before entering the last service area in Monaco where it would have been possible. There is talk about a 2 minutes penalty, on which Citroën intends to make an appeal, but there is no official confirmation yet...
If this is indeed the case, looks like an easy cruise to a record 4th Monte for Tommi... Not the way he really wants to win, though.

The stewards have confirmed the 2 minute penalty! You can say Makinen has been handed his 4th straight Monte victory, all he needs to do is keep it on the road in Day 3.
Poor Loeb, the Super1600 champ was driving so well too.
Oh and in case anyone didn't know, Citroen isn't eligible for the Manufacturer's championship because they're only competing in 7 rounds of the WRC championship.

I wonder why Citroen doesn't compete in all 14 rallies?
They should've gotten enough experience from last year's.... 4 or 6 rallies they joined.
A very cautious manufacturer.

But looks like Loeb will still be at the second place with 16 sec in front of Sainz.

It's still under appeal though which is why Loeb is still on top of the leader board.
I agree with the Puegeot boss in that this totally sucks for Loeb as there was no intention to cheat, but rules are rules-similar to Colin's mishap in Australia last year.
Doesn't make it any easier for Loeb knowing that he destroyed SS 13 and pulled away from Tommi by another 26 seconds( 44 seconds overall). Maybe his penalty will be overturned. He's sure driving like it will be :)
Petter looks safe to finnish in the points

Actually teams are only allowed to take the points from their top two drivers so two is all the really need. But, a third car with a good driver would be nice just in case something should happen. Weird since last year Subaru ran 3 and 4 cars per rally, but now with major backing by BAT, they still only plan on running Petter and Tommi. Maybe Lapworth feels pouring all resources into two cars is better then dividing it up between three and four?

Tommi is counting on Loeb to take the penalty at this point, so he's eased up on his driving. Why push it if he doesn't need to? :)
He drives that subie like it was made for him. From all of his comments, it really sounds as if he's having a great time with it.

Tommi wasn't counting on any penalty in the early stages today as was evident of his second-fastest stage time on SS12, just 1 second behind Petter. The penalty was given to Loeb last night. Tommi slowed the last two stages of the day today.
From WRC.com about Tommi's slow time:
"Makinen could only manage the seventh quickest time on the relatively short stage, and the fact he was just half a second quicker than fellow Subaru man, and previous stage pacesetter, Petter Solberg suggests the Subaru team's choice of tyre was incorrect."
To win, you and your team must make the least amount of mistakes. Citroen made a huge one, unfortunately for Loeb.
Should Tommi win, it was well deserved. Congrats to Subaru on getting both cars in the points, regardless of the outcome.
Sucks about Petter's spin. He would have likely nabbed a third place had that not happened(although that could be said for everyone who messed up ;) )
Congrats again to Subaru! Nice drive by the Ford boys as well.

Last night they showed the on-roof angle from one of the Subaru's. I'm not sure if those cameras are ALSO tied somehow into the VS interface (they weren't there last year) but they at least show normal coverage as well.
They explained that Virtual Spectator provided several of the 3D Animation sequences of the topography on the stages. Oftentimes accompanied by the animated progress of the road in white. Awesome stuff!! I can't wait...
They're doing a great job plugging their title sponsors this year. I plainly saw lingering camera moments on the Immarsat banners, RallyXS was an animated sequence title the first day and of course the mention of Virtual Spectator with demos several times over the event. Good job of that.

It looks like all the cars have the little Silver Box on the roof just over the driver. Is this a part of the Virt. Spect?
yes! John, along with Simon de Banke, took me a bit behind the scenes at the Rally of GB to take a peek as they were doing the final testing on the systems. That's exactly what it is... seems to be fully operational now too as they were just finishing up the testing of the units at GB last season...
So Loeb wins... or does he?
i have $$$$ to lay that the penalty does indeed go through and Tommi will end up your winner... which means also that Ford has a good start on the manufacturers points! ;)
ohhhhh... controversy!!!
:D way to go Tommi & Petter! excellent start!

I guess so. Well last year Burns and Solberg were the only drivers in the team winning the points anyway.
I think A rai is still in the team this year (from swrt.com), driving some of the 14 rallies. But as last year, his main purpose is to get rallying experience for the development of Subaru cars, i think.

Virtual Spectator ???????
I'm intrigued by this Virtual Spector thing. It sounds like its still in development though, and that in the future you'll be able to subscribe to it (for a small fee of course). Does anybody have more information about when and where it can be viewed? I've only been able to find a few articles about it on the net, and they don't say much.
On another note, until this Virt. Spec. is in action, the speedvision (soon to be speed channel) coverage is much improved. Its almost like watching it in England on the BBC. Tea and crumpits (sp?) anyone? I doubt very much that we will ever get the full european treatment.

Loeb is awesome, what an amazing guy. If you watch the video at wrc.com of them interviewing him about the penalty, he's really calm, says he's not really disappointed about the penalty. If that's not a role model I don't know what is. Plus, as someone else said, he's ten times as cute as Burns. Er, from an objective standpoint that is. :D

quoted from wrc.com:
"Tommi Makinen saluted Sebastien Loeb on his performance throughout the Monte Carlo Rally, but the four-time world champion reckons he had the measure of the Citroen driver, and believes he could have won outright had Loeb's two-minute penalty not been awarded.
Loeb is currently the winner of the event and certainly was the quickest driver over the three days. However he was given the penalty on Saturday evening when his team illegally changed the tyres on his Xsara T4. It is now down to the FIA to decide whether Loeb or Makinen is the winner of the season-opener, but the Finnish superstar says he had planned to go for 'maximum attack' on Sunday's four stages, but backed off when Loeb got the penalty.
"Loeb's performance was very, very good," said Makinen. "He did an excellent drive. I expected him to be very fast because the conditions were good, the driest I have ever seen. There were many other good Tarmac drivers here but he was the best.
"Of course, it is now not such a good feeling," admitted Makinen. "We were very well prepared to make it difficult for Loeb today. The conditions this morning would have suited our car and Pirelli tyres very well. Then we heard they had a two-minute penalty and we dropped our engine performance level down. There was no point to push. But I'm sure I could have been two minutes faster today if I'd gone flat out like I was preparing to do."
He added: "At the end of the rally we were told there was no penalties so we have to wait and see what's going on. It's not in my hands.""
Tommi is a great guy and a real competitor. Way better than Burnsy.

I have to agree that Loeb seems like a classy guy, almost feel sorry for him. Seems cut and dry for Subaru's case though (doesn't it).
| Crashton | 01-20-2002 01:59 PM |
As much as I want Tommi to win his 4th Monte & his first for Subaru, it is a real shame that Sabastien will probably lose on appeal. Can't believe his team made such a stupid screw up. It really didn't give him any competitive advantage either. I hate when events are decided by the rally lawyers. Sabastien has shown the world that he is a force to be reckoned with on tarmac. We'll have to wait & see if he can run up front on the loose. http://www.rally-live.com/2001/en/index.shtml

Well rules are rules. Colin was penalized last year for showing up late so those Citroen guys must be penalized and take the incident as a learning experience. A question? If only the two top drivers are allowed to get manufaturer points. Does that mean that if Mitsubishi registers twenty drivers and only two finish( 1st and 2nd place) they still get the manufaturers points or how does it work? Thanks for the info!!
| Shik | 01-20-2002 03:39 PM |
Yes. Though someone with the rules can better explain, I believe it's a bit different then last year when two drivers had to be "nominated" and only those drivers could score points.
This year, the top two placing drivers score the points, plain and simple....I think ;)

I thought it was this: The teams nominate up to 3 drivers, but the top 2 finishes for the team bring points to the manufacturers.
Since Citreon is not in the manufacturers championship, Tommi's finish of 2nd (6 points) actually gave Subaru 10 points cuz he was the first place for manufacturers since Loeb doesn't count.
So the interesting this is, if Loeb does take the 2 minute penalty, It would drop him into 2nd, and only Tommi would benefit, no one else...not even the manufacturers.

So how long would it concievibly take for this time penalty to be confirmed or denied?
Are we all going to blast SV with emails thanking them for the increase in coverage?

No. Burns has no allegence to any make.
Hes a paid driver for hire. He follows the money.
While he is very good, he is not as spectacular as the many greats of Rallying.

Hmmm... A French car, driven by a Frenchmen, in a French rally, crosses the line first because the second place finisher thought that the 2 minute penalty would stick... I dunno, seems to be poor planning on Tommi's part.
Anyone care to recall the 1967 Monte Carlo rally ?

Its really too bad that Petter isn't a little more consistent. He won 5 out of 14 stages and only got 6th. Oh well pretty impressive in general. And Subaru as a team sure looked good.
Can't wait to see tonight's coverage.

I think the coverage is awsome. I never knew a rally was longer then an hour before. J/K. The narrator from last year does sound better though.

The controversial Monte of the past was '66, not '67. History here: http://atschool.eduweb.co.uk/gyhsmith/bsrally.html
Certainly the fact that we are dealing with a pricipality that is heavily French, and this decision benefits a French driver and team, seems to smell a bit. It may be that the penalty will stand, that the "suspension" of the penalty was for the benefit of the French fans at the podium ceremony, and so that Citroen can print up a few posters for their showrooms before the result is changed ex post facto.

The new 4 day coverage on SpeedVision is AWESOME!
I was all set to cancel my cable when they bring this on. I'm going to actually email SV to tell them how much I enjoyed it, I never do that sort of thing.
Looking forward to seeing the finish tonite.

As I recall from reading of things past. The Mini of Paddy Hopkirk won the rally, but was DQed for a tech infraction. Something about how the lights dimmed. Anyway the outcome was that Citroen won the rally.

Like Ten Easy Lesson's Learning to Speak Rally Pace-Notes in A Foreign Language.
Just ten day's until the Rally of Sweden! Snow,Snow,Snow Glorious!
