Yes! David Higgins and his WRX beat out Ferreyos and the other million mitusbishi's for the Group N win by 3 seconds!
What an absolute glorious day to be a Subaru fan!
Congrats to the entire SWRT and everyone else who was involved. It's been 6 years, but worth the wait. And as TampaWRX stated, good luck to Burns next year at Peugeot, thanks for past three years and thanks for today.
And congrats to the Impreza WRC2001. First year in competition and it becomes the car to take Burns to his first world title. Not too bad, especially considering the potential of this car that has yet to be tapped(according to DL). 9 weeks until Monte Carlo, but for now...
Subaru is again World Champion. Time to celebrate!

Scooby Scooby Scooby Scooby!! --mocking the Tifosi and their chants of "Schumi Schumi Schumi" at F1 events. If you've ever heard this live, you know how annoying it can be. :D Wish they had a Rally in the US, since I'm going to skip the USGP next year. Would definitely like to see one live.

I was very excited about Richard winning the champion during the past few weeks.
Now he won. But I don't really feel that happy.....
Maybe because Colin, Tommi and Carlo, the closest rivals, all retired early so there was no expected ultimate final battle. And the win felts like a lucky win.
Also because Richard will be moving to Peugeot next year...as a Champion
And because Peugeot will have the the most number of top drivers next year...:( (Marcus who's last yr champ, Richard who's this yr champ, and Harri who's 4th overall this year)

how is it a lucky win? yes, all the other championship contenders DNF'd, but not a single one was mechanical. McRae and Sainz crashed out. sure, Sainz continued until Ford withdrew, but he was not in a position to challange. Makinen hit a rut wrong and broke his front suspension. Burns drove a smart race and won the championship because of it. what amazes me most is that he finally one this year while only winning one rally, yet in the past two years when he came in second overall, he won several rallies. go figure
the pugs are definetly going to be the one's to beat next year, but i suspect subaru will do quite well. the new car seems to be sorted out fairly well now, and there will be plenty of driving talent to complement it.

I felt it was a luck win because there were no battles for time and speed between drivers, like seconds in between time gaps. (4th place was a few minutes behind Richard, so the pressure was low => not as exciting as other rallies).
A win is still a win, but this time it's mostly about tactics, i know it's part of rallying, still I would like to see Richard really beat Colin.
Btw, if Mitsu continued using EVO6 Tommi might get a better chance :) Like Tommi said, the car is just too heavy and big. And it doesn't look as cool as 5 :D
New Age Impreza rules, a champ in first year of running.:)
Hope Tommi will kick ass with Impreza WRC2002.

Colin is a much more aggressive driver than Burns and that is why he is and always will be FASTER...
But on the opposite side being more aggressive also means that Colin takes more risks.
Risks that Burns has learned to take full advantage of...

spot on i'd say. sure, McRae has a tendency to set best stage times, but that's because he pushes sohard. its only a matter of time until he crashes. hence his nickname:McCrash. back in the legacy days he almost got fired from subaru b/c he crashed the car so often. burns has a much cleaner style and makinen is usually pretty good about finishing as well. i still think if they hadn't switched cars, he would have gotten #5.

Just a bit of extra information, Markko Martin's car caught fire(!), I think it was due to a fuelling problem, there was a bit of smoke coming out the engine and fireballs coming out the exhaust (at a standstill). Wearden clipped a gatepost and broke his steering.

Lucky win? That is just crazy to say. If Colin or Tommi would have won, I would guarentee not many would be saying" They won it by luck because look at the rallies this year that Richard scored no points in" Why, because it's easy to hate Burns. As was said before, Richard won the title yesterday because he was the better driver yesterday, plain and simple. He deserves every single bit of that championship. Other drivers may be faster, but you win championships by being the best driver overall throughout the year, and Burns got points when it counted.

Good job Scoobaru ! It is too bad it wasn't a down to the wire finish but a win is a win, no matter how you slice it. If anything Burns gets credit for not wrecking himself out of the race. I wish Burns luck and really hope that Tommi can get some rest and has a full recovery.
Newbie question: Does Subaru change the rally car every year with the newer model ? How does that work ? Or is it just after major revisions ? I realize they are probably making changes all the time but as far as something major, like the different incarnations of the EVO. I am sure that Tommi did some lobbying to try to get back into his old car.
Thanks
Arnold

Very interesting Quote on WRC News this morning...
Just a day after clinching the World Rally Championship, Richard Burns woke up this morning (Monday) to a contractual wrangle over his services for next year between current employers Subaru and manufacturers' title winners Peugeot.
Last month, Peugeot announced that Burns would be joining its ranks for 2002 and '03, a matter of days after Subaru had announced that Tommi Makinen was joining its line up next year.
But Burns is believed to have a clause in his contract with Subaru that allows the squad first option on his services for the following season.
Subaru's team principal, David Lapworth, said: "Richard's contract is a private matter between him and Subaru. We'll be discussing the future with Richard this week.
"There is a contractual relationship in place between ourselves and Richard next year, and we would love him to stay. But he has to want to. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink. Our objective is to persuade Richard to stay. You would have thought winning the title would have been enough," he added.
Peugeot has denied there is anything stopping Burns joining current drivers Marcus Gronholm and Harri Rovanpera in 2002.
"No matter what Subaru say, you can be sure Richard Burns will be driving for us next season," said Peugeot Sport's director Corrado Provera.
What a line up Subaru could have Tommi, Richard, and Petter backing them up.
Almost a dream team!

Congrats to Burnsie & SWRT !! Yeah sometimes he may be a little whiney, but he is one hell of a driver. Give him some credit> Though he didn't win that many rallies, he was consistantly in the top 2 or 5 and won the most stages of the season. Consistancy is what wins championships. I watched the highlights on Raceweek and RPM2night(super lame). Did anybody else see the shot of Burnsie's chic? She looks like she's 13!
So there is some controversy behind who the champ is going to drive for next year? Will there be a lawsuit? Is Burns just trying to get more cash from Peugeot? Burns, Makkinen and Solberg would make quite a team. I think Makkinen and Burns would fight even more than McRae and Burns did.

It was a rather boring rally when it comes down to it. It would have been nice if Burns actually had to fight for the win. He really only had to drive 8/10ths and finish.

IMHO: Next season here is my SWRT predictions.
Burns will be the first WRC driver to leave a team after a winning season (IIRC).
Tommi will be the #1 driver, Petter #2, and #3 will be Toshihiro... However I feel that Toshihiro will shine better and is a better driver than Petter. Toshihiro just needs a better co-driver.
These are all my opinions so think nothing of them!! I in no way could do half the job that these guys do.

i have to disagree jon. i have been really impressed with solberg's driving this year, much more so than last year. i think he could very well be a champion in a few years (after makinen retires). arai is good, but he just hasn't been able to put together an impressive run at a WRC event. why is it you feel arai is better despite the results indicating otherwise? :p

I think he's better as Petter is still getting his feet wet. He's pushing harder than he can control sometimes.. although it's doing good so far, it's going to bite him in the arse one day and then he'll slow down (firing blazes don't count :D ). The main reason is I like to root for the underdog. It feels good when they do well. I think SWRT just haven't given Arai the chance he deserves. How many races did Petter do this year compared to the number entered by Arai.
I agree Petter has improved and I'm impressed with his performance in some of the last rallies, but in all fairness He isn't consistant.

Quote from David Lapworth : "we would love him to stay. But he has to want to. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink. "
Richard has already stated that he wanted to leave the team. He said something along the lines of wanting to be with a team that will be able to win the championship for the next five years(referring to Pug). Sounds to me like Subaru will try to get him to stay but will not push the issue if wants to leave.
Burns and Tommi seemed to get along well at Mitsu, so I don't think that would be much of a problem, but who knows what a World Championship could do to an ego ;) Tommi, Burns, Petter, and the 44S Impreza, a Dream Team indeed!!!

I'm glad for Richard. Congrats. I don't know him well enough to say I like or don't like him, so the default is that I think he's okay.
However, I rather rooted for Petter. Though I knew he wouldn't do as well as Richard because of the experience factor, I was still excited to see him do well when he did. He got second in one rally IIRC. That had to be cool. I kinda saw him as somewhat the underdog.
From what I saw of interviews of Tommi, he seemed like a cool guy, and I think it's great that he's coming to Subaru. I think I like him better than Richard. I just hope he does well in 2002. I also hope Petter continues to improve. I want to see Subaru get the Manufacturer's Title.
I'm somewhat new to this rally stuff, this being my first year to watch/keep up with the WRC.
And yes, I think it would be radical if both Tommi and Richard were driving for Subaru, but I think I'd rather see Petter continue to have a chance to shine.

Back home now after an absolutely brilliant week and half spectating and doing crazy stuff like driving the nurburgring etc with Jamie, dmross and my bro.
I'll start a new thread soon with some pictures from the shakedown, rally show, rally and finish ramp. I took over 400! need to sort that lot out......
P.S. Jamie is OK Alex, we were on the next stage that was cancelled when Sainz had his accident. Even though it was cancelled we had a huge laugh with some crazy french Auriol Fans and we built a shrine to the departed cars of McCrash, Solberg and Makinen, that turned a few heads.
I drove over 3500 miles in a week and half in my Impreza Sport. I need a holiday!
Gonna be hard to top this trip next year Jamie, huge fun! :D

Hello!
I didn't even realize Burns had won till going to the SOA site yesterday. Never thought he really had a chance this season. WAY TO GO!
