Monte Carlo - talk about it here! part 3

Rattler 01-21-2002 12:47 AM

I don't think FIA should give the little frog the win(I am Fr. Can., I can say that!). A rule is a rule. Find out sometime today though.

So why do they call Petter "Hollywood"?
Because they think he's handsome.

I think the penalty should be upheld. It didn't give him a competitive advantage, but he broke the rules. If it would have given him a competitive advantage, he should have been disqualified. If there is no penalty, why even have the rule? It would set a bad precedent.

The narrator sounds the same to me. The coverage, however, just blows me away. Unlike the hour-long wrapup shows, where we get a few seconds of in-car coverage, we got what seemed to be MINUTES. I know these guys are the best drivers in the world, but the way they just drive, in the face of the craziest stuff...

There were times when I know that Colin McRae's vision had to be obscured by sun glare, but he didn't even lift. Unreal stuff. I urge everyone to send kudos to Speedvision, so that they know this is appreciated. I would think that if everyone can muster up sufficient ire to complain about the NASCAR stuff, we can do it for something good, which people rarely comment on.

Did anyone else notice that at the presentation of the trophys that the 555 livery was on the car and on Tommi's and Kaj's driving suits. No tobacco advertising ban in Monaco.

I is back

Made it back home from Monte, what an awesome rally. I have tonnes to talk about but i'm a bit knackered for a novel right now.

Glad you guys enjoyed wrc.com I couldnt say before but on the first day of the rally i was working on the site helping the guys take it live. The times you saw for the drivers on stage were updated 1 second after they crossed the finish line, it was that fast!

I was also helping out with the trial run of VS and could watch the rallycars through stage live on the stage maps. Quite amazing when i could tell the guys to expect a stage time to apear in a couple of seconds and there it was, bang, on the website for you guys to see. There is so much more to VS that i saw and how it's being used but i cant say a thing about that, it's going to blow you away.

I'll write up the full trip soon, from start to finish it was truly amazing. I have over 450 pictures to sort ranging from the scrutineering where i was stood next to the scrutineer checking the car and have pictures of the FIA rule books they used, inside the cars, the lot. I then have pictures from the shakedown, got some great ones of the pugs as i was invited into the team area by Burns PA who i met at Nice Airport. Got great shots of all the cars on the shakedown stage. I spent all friday in rally HQ so didnt get to the stages but spent sat/sunday on stage at the col de torini both in day and night then onto some of the sunday stages. I ran out of memory on the camera.

Sunday night i spent in the Stars and Bars nightclub/Bar in Monaco with all the drivers and team members. McRae was the coolest arival as he had the Monaco Police drive him to the club in a Police Car! What a superstar. In the Bar were Solberg, Burns, both McRae's and Pinizi (who's misses is just stunning! :D). There was probably more but it was packed. I feel like crap now.

On the plane back i was sat with the FIA steward that impounded Loeb's tyres, Tommi has won this Rally, no question about it!

I'll get picies up asap. Totally Bolloxed right now. :D

YEAH!! As usual, a great report, John! :D Lookin' forward to the 'in depth' version!
Marc Sawaya 01-21-2002 05:10 PM

Wow John, that's not fair! You can be sure we're all bright green! Well, you have our full attention, we want to hear every detail! And lots of pics! :)

By the way, I didn't realize this, but a 2 minute penalty would put Loeb in 2nd place, just 1 second ahead of Sainz. I bet Sainz is pissed! "One second faster!" Loeb is probably glad for that, though.

Thanks John for the encapsulated update! Sounds like you had quite a time of it! Look forward to hearing more.
The VS looks like it is going to be awesome as I was checking their site today....
I actually signed on right now to see if there was a decision on the penalty...figured it'd be posted here faster than anywhere else....heheh.
