You just need to roll that little wheel up next to the handbrake when that happens;) And when theres more grip you roll it back a little bit. It changes the cars charateristics quite noticably.

Yeah but Sam is used to his Camaro also, and it should be way more than .9 ahead of even a fully prepared STX WRX. So to me it looks like either the course setup or the conditions made AWD a big advantage and therefor skewed the results for the STi as well. If the regular WRX made up that much ground because of the AWD, the STi should have blown the Camaro away if it really was competitive. See my point? With the STi still behind the Camaro in conditions that apparently favored it, it doesn't look misclassed.

my guess is that a new set of Hoosier autocross tires on the STi may have made up the difference.

If this STU class -- allowing the Evo to run basically under STX rules -- is really a go for 2004, I'm just a bit disappointed personally. I probably would have considered running STU. Instead, I've already prepped the engine well beyond ST or SP rules, with cams, cam gears, and boost control. I figured that the Evo would get moved to BSP for sure, and so I thought that SM was the best alternative. Oh well, if it happens, at least it's a classing rule that gives us more choices where to run -- even if I personally will have a hard time taking advantage.

Last year in STX, I beat that same car in ESP (of course without Sam driving it) by almost a sec at the Petersburg Pro and even though I didn't run my best during class runs, I was only 0.9s off Marcus Meredith in ESP at the Oscoda Pro (for 60 seconds of runs).
At the Pro finale, Marcus was 1.0s and Sholtz was 1.8s ahead of STX considering a 60 second run time. Also, that same ESP Camaro was beat by STX (again, Sam not driving it)
So actually, 0.9 ahead of a ESP Camaro (with sam driving it) in a "underprepped" STX car is actually pretty damn good! Considering the colder weather and the fact that I would bet the STX car was on Azenis (and would have an advantage at the colder temps), thats right on "nationals winning pace" for Mike. But then again, we expect nothing less. Whats so "underprepped" about your car anyways mike? ;) I thought it was prepped to the hilt!

I agree, I didn't want to deal with the whole ESP/BSP deal, and since BSP is really weak locally I just started prepping for SM for a better depth of field. Although I haven't done any engine mods yet I am pretty sure my STi lateral and trailing links will make me inelgible due to the pillowball bushings. Guess I better go back and read Red Rocket's threads about how to fit some 255 R compounds on there!

255s shouldnt be that hard honestly. AS guys are already running them. Ive done some fender rolling and if I find the right wheels I should be able to fit 265s.

You had to be there to understand...the course was wet and cold the entire time and later had significant amounts of standing water. The right-hand course was pretty much a lake by Sunday.
This is mostly why the Street Touring classes did better than their PAX indices would normally allow. Plus the Subaru launches were more or less unaffected whereas I'm sure the Camaro had fun trying to get the Hoosiers to grip at the lights...

Most of the questions about STU (or the proposed STS2 for 2-seaters) still haven't been answered for the most part that I'm aware of. I do believe the STU ruleset is similar to STX, though, including tire width.

On Saturday, I was running 2.0 60' times on Hoosier A3S03s, which were spinning like mad.
On Sunday, I didn't get any 60' times, but I must have been a bit faster -- the Dunlops were launching with no wheelspin. If I had to guess, somewhere near the 1.8 seconds that Kiko reported in the wet.

[B]The Solo Events Board met at the SCCA National Convention in Kansas City February 6th through 8th. Attending were SEB Chairman Colan Arnold, board members Chris Dorsey, Mari Clements, Ron Bauer, Andy Hollis, Marcus Merideth, Mark Sipe, and Mark Sirota. Also attending were Tasha Goodale, Howard Duncan and Doug Gill of the National Staff, and BOD liaison Bob Introne.
During this meeting, the SEB discussed and approved the addition of two supplemental classes to National Tour events; STS2 and STU. These classes reflect what the SEB envisions to be the continued growth of the Street Touring category, and are being evaluated in conjunction with evaluation of the feasibility of combining several less-subscribed classes and of restructuring some less-subscribed preparation categories.
Reflecting the success of the ST concept both nationally and regionally, the two supplemental classes were developed as the next logical steps in the progression of this category. Variants of one or both of these classes are already being offered in several regions across the country.
STS2 will follow the STS rule set, but the eligible cars will be restricted to two-seaters with engine displacements of 1.8 liters or less. This class will provide a home for a number of popular vehicles, including the Honda CRX and del Sol, Mazda RX7 (non-turbo, '79-'92) and Miata ('90-'97), Toyota MR2 ('85-'89), as well as other similar vehicles. STS category rules 14.1 to 14.10 apply. Further, as in STS, only original equipment viscous limited slip differentials are legal in STS-2. Excluded vehicles include Lotus (all), Mazda Miata (99+), and Toyota MR2 ('91-'95 and '00+).
STU will follow the STX rule set, but will raise the displacement limit for otherwise STX-legal vehicles to 3.1 liters for forced induction and to unlimited displacement for natural aspiration. To accommodate the greater power of these vehicles, restrictions on wheel width are lifted and the maximum tire width will be increased to 275 for front or rear wheel drive vehicles (but will remain at 245 for AWD vehicles). Other than these limited exceptions, the STX rule set as described in 14.11 applies. This class extends the Street Touring concept to cars including the Audi S4, BMW M3 (E36), Chevrolet Camaro, Dodge Neon SRT-4, Ford Mustang, Mazda RX-8, Mitsubishi Lancer Evo. 8, Pontiac Firebird, Pontiac GTO, Subaru WRX STi, Volvo S60 R, and Toyota Supra. Excluded vehicles include the E46 M3 and the E39 M5.
In conjunction with the planned evolution of this category and of the sport as a whole, these two supplemental classes will not be considered for full national status until 2007. One or both classes could then potentially be recommended for full national status provided that rules stability is attained, member participation is strong, and the classes continue to reflect the needs of the current enthusiast market.
Please feel free to forward this information to other lists.

Yeah, a well-prepped E-36 M3 will be tough to beat (at least for National Tour events), assuming any top drivers choose to run one in a "supplemental" class.
[B]Just read that on the evo list.

I think a STU prepped STI or EVO is a good matchup against a STU prepped E36 M3. You can make gearing changes in BSP/SM and alot of E36 M3 guys do that, but you can't in STU.

I think the Evo guys are going to have a problem with the 245 rule more then the STi guys.

Why do you say that? 275s would greatly benefit the STi.

My guess is that the tires to have for an STU Evo will be the stock 235/45R17 Yokohama Advan A046 tires. They are reportedly quite a bit grippier than the Azenis.

Because the EVO fenders have considerably more room for wide tires than the STi, so 255's are a pretty easy/common upgrade.

255s also fit with minimal modification on stis. Looks like the tire of choice will end up being azenis again in 245/45/17. The sti could use the extra gearing anyway.

If "minimal modification" means mounting them on the stock wheels, then yes, 255s fit with "minimal modification" on an sti.
If "minimal modification" means mounting them on rota 48mm offset wheels, then 275s also fit with "minimal modification" on an sti.

On a AS sti yes everything fits fine. But when dropped on rotas its a bit to close to the rear fender (with 245/45s) and takes a little rolling(yes I just need some stiffer springs but Im working on that.)
If they make some 275s in a lower offset then 45 you should be able to get them in there too.

Can you actually fit 275's inside the STi fenders - even with the fenders rolled? I've never seen anyone fit something larger than a 255. Are the STi fenders wider than those on the WRX?
p.s. Not that I'm going to be fitting 255's OR 275's in the skimpy wagon wheel arches any time soon. It's gonna be tight just fitting 245's! (that is if anyone ever releases a 245 that's actually beeter than the 225 Azenis)

No the fenders arent any bigger then the wrxs. I dont know why the 255s kevin put on were made such a big deal for.
I have 245/45/17 victoracers in the rear with the fenders rolled and I have about an inch of clearance to the strut and little clerance to the fender. I think the reason you havent seen anything bigger then 255 on a wrx is they dont make a bigger tire with the proper aspect ratio for a wrx that I have come across.

STU has the potential to be a really fun & diverse class. Although it could end up being STi vs. EVO, there are lots of interesting alternatives, from ponycars to M3's to Supras. A decent 320hp Supra Turbo can be had for half the cost of an STi and can fit monster tires. LOTS of aftermarket parts available as well. hmmm......

Can you run catless in STU or is that only an SM allowance?

Same cat rule as STX, need one cat. Catless you'd run in ESP or SM.

I've been in SM for 3 years now with a different car and friends. Never looked at ESP.

Tom, your just not going to get the 275's to fit on the STI (easily)... But however, I was able to take my friend Moostang cobra R rims (with 275's mounted) and bolt them on my EVO. OMG  they fit perfectly on the front, cleared the calipers, no rubbing issues on the inner fender wells. Body roll will be an issue I'll have to deal with to make this work. As for the fit in the rear? not worried, I have plenty of room (almost an inch between the tire and rear shock, fenders are not a problem)

Sounds like AWD class is coming... A little birdie told me a Nationally preped STi (Astock...and the ESP National Champion) went at it head to head in Private session....The STi Stomped the National champs Camaro...pretty handily....So changes are in the works...Wahoooo

IMHO there is no reason why the EVO and STI shouldn't be in BSP. It is ridiculous to have both the STI regular WRX in the same prepared class. Makes ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE.

Then put the cars in the same line like they do all mustangs. Cobra Rs are in the same class as v6 stangs and no ones complaining.

So 2 wrongs make a right? To this day I don't understand the whole Street Prepared classing system.

Street prepared is an update backdate modified class. Without slower and faster types of the same make there would be nothing to ud/bd. The mustangs all being in one class isnt a wrong so this wouldnt be 2 wrongs.
Im not sure if the sti should be in bsp or esp yet but saying that the wrx is in esp so the sti cant just insnt a good reason. And if it does stay in esp im sure next year it will be moved to the same line as the wrx and you could put all the sti goodies in a esp wrx.
