New fabrication project- think motorized clock pod LCD
So I am about to embark on another DIY project in my car.. Namely a Carputer. I had a whole bunch of computer parts kicking around so I figured I would throw them all together and have some fun.

System consists of:
- PIII 500
- 1GB memory
- 8GB Compact Flash card as a hard drive through a CF to IDE converter
- thumb keyboard
- DVD Rom
- Lilliput 7" Touch screen LCD
- Road runner open source front end
- 802.11g
- iGuidance GPS

LCD:
I've chosen to go with the headrest version so that I can use the housing to fabricate my hinges and rolling mechanism. The motorized portion will actually be controld by an old gutted CD Rom tray that I can tell to open and close from commands from the computer (I am a .NET software developer so I should be able to do some cool stuff)

Keyboard:

I have an extra OEM clock pod that I will be fabricating the LCD screen into so that it opens like the JDM navigation system. And it will snap in using the existing pressure clips for the clock pod. For those who haven't seen it.. here are a couple of quick pics of the JDM navigation system.

I'll be posting my progress as I go along. Just waiting on my CF to IDE convertors so I can boot from Compact Flash and my copy of XP Home.

The goal is to make it look as OEM as possible with a custom fiberglass computer enclosure in the trunk of the car... should be a molded box with a raised Windows logo.
Psybin 12-05-2006 09:33 PM

Awsome. I want one! Looking forward to seeing the progress. How much $$ do you think you will have in it when its all said and done?
brcewane 12-05-2006 09:39 PM

All in total about $400-$500 including the LCD.. already had the motherboard, processor etc.. then just lots of blood sweat and tears :D
Handsdown 12-05-2006 10:20 PM

that JDM nav pod is so sick. can't wait to see how this turns out.
Ghosthound 12-05-2006 10:34 PM

wow... i have never seen that jdm navi unit... i wonder why its not even an option in america.. im sure a good amount of people would be highly interested... such as myself
Handsdown 12-05-2006 10:36 PM

it would interfere with the legacy/outback sales.
G3Red04WRX 12-05-2006 11:11 PM

Your going to ditch that minikey for something more PC friendly after about 3 days. Another much better and cheap alternative is the Logitech Netplay USB Playstation2 controller. Just detach the keyboard from the controller, toss the controller in the trash, and use the keyboard in the car like this...

BTW, what are you planning to use for media storage? Can't really fit a whole lot on an 8gb CF card after OS, drivers, and iGuidance Maps have been loaded.
Ghosthound 12-06-2006 02:55 AM
it would interfere with the legacy/outback sales.
hmmm... id like to disagree. first of all, the legacy/outback dont have navi as an option either, unless your talking about the spec b. aside from that, i dont think that the impreza and the legacy are considered competition for each other.
cpages2 12-06-2006 06:46 AM

My question is how is the screen goign to close? The AC Ducts are right below it and last time I was in there it didint have to much clearence.

Thanks,
Mike
ekw 12-06-2006 08:13 AM

looking forward to the step by step!
nice to see there will be at least 10 posts in this thread before some knucklehead says:
"that won't work, why don't you just buy X and do what everyone else does?"
Vew 12-06-2006 09:42 AM

You are my hero. I've been wanting to do this ever since I found out if you rip out the clock on road trips, those portable DVD players fits in there nicely and is at the perfect height and distance.
brcewane 12-06-2006 09:54 AM

Yeah, there is lots of clearance in there to make it all happen. As for storage, I will be expanding to more CF storage as needed, I have 2 CF to IDE controllers that should give me a total of 16G if needed...

And as for the thumb keyboard.. I have no worries about it.. I work for RIM (Blackberry) and type on thumb keyboards all day long :D

The screen will be on sliders and pivot its way back into the storage area.
Notnice 12-06-2006 10:00 AM

nice
thats one of the freshist ideas i have seen in a while. props to u cant wait to see how it pans out
Mayor McCheese 12-06-2006 12:22 PM

Do you have a worklog on mp3car.com? If not you should start one :)
I am cool 30 12-06-2006 12:28 PM

Good luck Tim...this is going to be a nice winter project for ya!

Knightmare69 12-06-2006 12:30 PM

Awesome, I'm looking forward to this as I would like to move my double din Naigation to that spot and then have 2 dins for storage space.

Thanks Dan.. hopefully the pro-hockey thing is going well for you this year, you will have to check the finished product out when you get back for the summer.
brcewane 12-08-2006 09:32 PM

CF to IDE controllers came in today, now just waiting for my buddy to get me my copy of XP for cheap and we get the party started.

Also picked up a spare clock pod from a local TSC member for free for my project. The goal is for it to snap right in place in the OEM mounting holes.

Stay tuned :D
Imprez04 12-10-2006 11:28 AM

to whoever asked if he would need more space...

if he is looking for more storage without having to use a HDD, he could always jsut use some kind of raid array to do so...
RskTrance4mer 12-10-2006 03:40 PM

i've always wanted navi in my subie without taking space away from my dins..i plan on getting a double din dvd deck and that way my passengers can watch movies while i look at my navi that way i dont have to switch from navi to movie everytime i get lost on a trip =D. good luck and can't wait for the results.
fastwrx25 12-10-2006 07:00 PM

that is super pimp man. Let us know how it works out! pics and video of it in action pls.

Will do.... just about to start in with the cutting of the clock pod.. I will post progress pics and post an AVI of it in action when it is working
GetUpKid 12-11-2006 07:08 AM

im interested in how you do the pod setup... id like to do this to my clock pod as well, so i can hook up a satellite radio setup.

can this be done with just a clock pod?
jupiterrex 12-11-2006 07:29 AM

that is one hellova Idea... DO IT!!!!

LastResort 12-11-2006 11:36 PM

quite the project.
DieselClown 12-12-2006 02:23 PM

I;d been trying to do that since before I even got my car. Good luck!
RskTrance4mer 12-15-2006 01:54 AM

where's the update?!?! what happen?
brcewane 12-15-2006 09:53 AM

Hopefully can get some cutting done this weekend, picking up the sliders today.

FYI, I don't have a ton of free time as a lot of that time is spent with my daughter... as anyone who followed my headlight project knows, I tend to take my time with these things and piece in the work when I can... Damn cold weather up here doesn't help much either
GetUpKid 12-15-2006 03:07 PM

are you using just a standard clock pod?
brcewane 12-15-2006 03:33 PM
are you using just a standard clock pod?
yes, but I will be doing a bunch of fabrication to it :D

when I am done, it should snap into the stock clock pod mounting clips
SuperStreet 12-15-2006 11:27 PM

Can't wait to see how it comes out.
G3Red04WRX 12-16-2006 01:25 PM

So hows this project coming along? And as for my comment earlier about that thumbpad keyboard, theres almost NO extra function keys that a standard keyboard provides (home, end, f-keys, windows, shortcut, etc...) and they become a total pita to use once you have windows up and running and try to actually do anything that requires a keyboard. If not a permanent part of your system, you should keep a real keyboard in the car for emergencies when required.

Just putting the hardware all together and installing XP tomorrow.. I've been working on customizing my front end (RoadRunner) to the way I want it. I'll likely be doing some custom .NET development for some stuff so that when my car comes on, it will connect to my home wireless LAN and download or upload any data it needs... this weeks weather etc.

For 99% of the time any input that I will be putting in will be on the touch screen keyboard that is part of the front end... Not doing much email typing or any of that stuff.

I picked the keyboard up for $11 so it is just somthing that I can use if I am typing something long which I don't expect to do hardly at all.

I will hopefully be starting a thread on mp3car.com once my trouble ticket gets answered for activating my account.. no email activation has been sent to me and it has been over a week now.

Some of the construction stuff I've been putting off because I will be prototyping it in thinner MDF.. and might end up leaving it that way.. I am hoping to get my table saw and scroll saw this Christmas...

I'll likely build my own custom BlackBerry Pod with USB connection to use my BlackBerry for a wireless modem if needed and it will charge while I am driving...

Also hoping to hook into its bluetooth interface for handsfree as well..

Should be a fun project

Why not get a 2.5" USB HD enclosure and a 2.5" laptop drive (I got an 80GB one for $90) and clone the with your XP?

And for connectivity... GPS cant you use XM, and internet.. I dunno... EIOS card?

I'm trying to stick with CF instead of a hard drive because of some of the extreme colds that we get here in the winters.. don't want the drive freezing on me.
moss 12-17-2006 01:18 PM

Ah, ok, very true. Just wondering on that point since 2.5" HD and even smaller ones can hold up to like 100GB.
brcewane 12-17-2006 09:23 PM

Made some progress today... bought my drawer sliders.. I will have to modify them a bit to get them to work. Got the computer put together and started loading XP..

Having some booting issues from the CF.. XP installed on it fine, but the BIOS is having some boot issues with it.

*********** UPDATE ****************

Got to work on some fabricating today.. for those of you interested.. this is the kind of room you have to work with under the clock pod... It is tight but should do the trick.

here is a quick mockup of the LCD holder in the hole to give an idea of the end result.

Marked out the area that I wanted to cut out of the OEM clock pod and got it cut out.

And I have almost finished the skin for the front end of the software:

I think I have the sliders and hinge action figured out and will have a prototype whipped up tomorrow as I got my new table saw :D

As usual, when I get some progress done I will definately post.. My original idea for motorizing it doesn't look like it is going to work, so I'm going to have to get creative.

Stay tuned....

yeah man, keep us up to date on the progress!
brcewane 01-01-2007 06:19 PM

******** UPDATE ********

Made some more progress today.. First I put a backing on the Headrest mount so that I had something to fasten stuff to. I then put on my T-hinge that will be part of the mechanism for popping up the screen.

I then put some small strips of wood around the headrest mount to make it flush with the sides of the housing... The corners will end up being rounded with fiberglass/bondo and then painted.

Then put the rollers on the bottom of the screen frame that will be used as sliders.. just used good old kitchen drawer roller hardware.. the guides will be attached to the base:

A couple of shots of the LCD unit in the spot with the cut clock pod.. the LCD sits a little low compared to where it will be when I am done.

I also cut the base to go into the clock area.. just need to measure out the side sliders and put my second T-hinge on the base to act as the pivot arm on the LCD unit.

Just trying to fit the work in around my daughter's sleep schedule.. that table saw gets loud.
MFR Sweep 01-01-2007 06:51 PM

looks good man

brcewane 01-18-2007 04:05 PM

*********** UPDATE *************

I've been doing some ergonomics testing for myself about having the screen where I have been mocking it up in the previous pictures. I am pretty short (5'7" on a good day depending on barometric pressure) and being able to reach up into this area when driving or plain sitting in the driver's seat of the car is a bit far for me.

It wouldn't be bad if it was just a display, but since it is a touch screen display and I will be doing navigating with my finger this is a bit of a problem.

So I have been doing some more research and have found another place that I think I am going to put the LCD. It will require a bit of re-routing of the HVAC system behind the dash and the hazard switch but I think it will work better for me. I will have to get some different vents or make my own but this is the general idea... from the measurements that I have taken with my screen it looks like it should fit.. it will be tight but should fit.

Let me know what you think :D
