One Lap of America picture/story/results/links thread part 2

He talked to Mark today and we've got the replacement intercooler parts for him if he needs them. With any luck he will be back on the road to finish this thing.

I spoke with Fitz, who was helping wrench on Luke's car. Sounds like he's out until tomorrow afternoon; he bent a coilover, busted the windshield, among other things... and crested the hill @ 125mph! That's damn fast.
nrusso14 05-03-2005 10:28 PM

Didn't look so good. Glad he's ok!!

What sucks is looking at the results he was 4th fastest in the first session, less than .2 from 2nd place, so it wasn't like he just went out and crashed after being unfamiliar with the track. **** happens I guess.
MattSTi 05-04-2005 12:51 AM

I was thinking of doing a HPDE shenendoah circuit, even after seeing how little runoff there is. After seeing this video I will definitely not being tracking my car there for a while.

Glad luke is ok though, looks like it could have been a lot worse.

Busy day. It's late (1AM). We just got into the hotel near VIR. I'm sure Luke will chime in here at some point. Good news is that there were no major injuries. Car needs a few components to continue as RyanC mentioned above. Tomorrow morning we run two versions of VIR. In the afternoon we run another. Then we pack up and drive ~300 miles to the Carolina Rod Shop. Get our book stamped and drive another ~300 to the track for the next day. I'll post something at Flat4Racing before I retire.

Its a good thing the STi wing was on there. Otherwise it could have been much worse.

I'm talking end-over-end flip off that crest. ;)

Seth
dwx 05-04-2005 09:16 AM

Heh I don't think the STI wing weighs that much... You aren't going to flip a 3200 lb car end over end on that, wing or not.

I wouldn't look at the video as a reason not to do a track day at the track. People have crashed on just about every turn of every track out there. You aren't going to be pushing nearly as hard as Luke was (at least you shouldn't be at a HPDE).

From Car and Driver
Narrow, unforgiving, fussy and occasionally downright perverse, the multi-configurable Shenandoah course was unkind to others as well, particularly the Luke Russell/Mike McInturf Subaru WRX STi.

The Subie was holding down a solid fifth place in the overall standings going into Day Three, and Russell bolstered that in the days opening round with a strong fourth-place run, less than two-tenths of a second behind Brian Smith in the John Hennessey Dodge Viper.

But in the second round, utilizing a longer, faster version of the layout, Russell carried a little too much speed through a fast left-hand turn that crests a hill en route to a tight banked turn called the Carousel.

Fast cars can get airborne through this section, making precise entry lines critical. And Russell found himself off-line after cresting the hill, then found himself off the track.

As he battled for control, the Subie launched itself into the nearby tire wall, sustaining substantial battle damage, though Russell and McInturf were at work attempting to make it driveable as the other teams packed up and headed for the drag strip.

Bwhaha. You people have to give up on the whole "Sti and EVO wing saving everything and all".

Well Today I skipped my last day of classes to go and watch one lap. I had some stuff I had to get done with school (i'm still in college) before I could get out there so I only saw the last time trial. I arrived at VIR at about 12:30pm. I hung out with Jon, his dad and Martin. It was really cool to see all the cars and watch the second heat of the time trial- as I'd never been to a time trial. After the first two heats- they worked on the car because Jon wasn't happy it wasn't braking in a straight line. They fixed that as I went for a "test" drive on the roads in VIR to test out these brakes holding on for life in the back seat with the roll bars :) At least it was braking in a straight line. He took 1st in his class first two time trials- and 9th and 11th overall in the first and second time trial. Third time trial the SRT4 was f45st4r :( So Jon placed second in his class and 10th overall in the third time trial. Right now he sits 10 points behind the SRT-4 in his class in second place. Overall Jon sits 7th, 10 points ahead of the SRT-4.

Here are some pics I took on my crappy digital camera: http://filebox.vt.edu/users/tknoll/One%20lap%20at%20VIR/

But it was worth missing my last day of classes for ;) :disco:

So my info I guess was kinda biased as I didn't know the other scooby drivers.
1LapGTi 05-04-2005 08:26 PM

Hey Ryan, Thanks for the body parts!! You will be happy to know that they have survived 5 events unscathed!!

Thanks Fitz for your help swapping out body parts!

We are still trying to claw our way out of our hole, and are sitting 17th overall and 3rd in class. Not bad considering we dropped to 62nd and 11th after IRP.

We are running a little behind with our updates, but have some pics up on our site:

I am out of the office right now so I can't get e-mails. If you need wheels for the STI let Kim know at 510 786 1726. We will try our best to get you up and running

Wow, that was hairy! Impressive car control not to spin out at that high speed which would've probably ended up with the car hard against the wall and the end of Luke's One Lap. Good luck to Luke, hopefully he makes a strong comeback!
lukerussell 05-05-2005 11:06 PM

thanks for all the support. here is what happened:

i got greedy.

end of story.

i had a car that didn't belong in the top 5, yet i wanted more. 11/10ths wasn't enough, i had to bump it up to 12/10ths - and paid for it.

we could've put the car back together for Nelson Ledges. however, it took me about 2 days before i could think straight. by then it was too late. i've never been in an auto accident before - it was a little overwhelming. plus my hand starting swelling, it looks like a ham hock now. i couldn't even pick up a wrench with it - so i was down to one hand. seeing my car wadded up made me physically sick. and my neck/back stiffened up, as was expected. - so i called it quits. it's a decision i regret now, you gotta at least finish.

it looked like we needed an a-arm, a housing for one of the JICs, and some intercooler pipes and silicone hoses, and a windshield. i'm sure other items would've popped up. i just noticed today that i flattened my seat brackets, not sure how, but my driver seat is about a foot lower than the passenger.

i would like to thank Turbo XS, Subaru of America, Rota and Safe Drives. the car was a shoe in for a class win. thanks to their help my finishing positions overall were (out of 93): 9th, 4th, 7th, 5th, 5th, 3rd, 5th, 5th, 4th, dnf's. class finishes were (out of 18): 3rd, 1st, 1st, 1st, 1st, 1st, 1st, 1st, 1st, dnf's.

they were all more than willing to assist after the crash too.

also thanks to Top Speed, Doug and Porter (Jason) for some last minute tweaking. Tom Hoppe for some rad suspension setup advice. Fitz (Mark) for jumping right in to help fix the car. If he doesn't do One Lap next year, somebody get him on their team - he's very helpful. The AMS Evo guys were great too. Jon is a great competitor. His dad Ray sat me down after the crash and gave me some needed advice. Braille for hooking me up with a 7.5lb battery. KC for some nice decals. Dale at boxer4racing who is always helpful and was standing by to search and send me whatever parts i needed. sorry if i forgot anyone.

one clarification, the other black STi was a father/son duo - ben and dan, taking in the whole experience - in a stockish car - and kicking butt. 2nd at roebling - awesome.

the dyno comp STi had 3 great guys - enrique, neil and richard. we were all helping each other out and having a great time. you'll see them in the ultimate street car challenge - good luck.

i was thinking this would be my last one lap for a while. but now i think i'm going to have to try one more time (redemption). ideas have been thought up and plans are under way. the experience this year will definitely mature me as a driver and make me better overall. so look out.

We are all sorry to hear you will not be finishing the event with us. But are extremely happy to hear you are ok. Hope you are back up and running soon.

GOOD LUCK and we hope to see you next year!

Luke,
I've still got that whole set of JICs sitting here as spares if you'd like them. :)

Luke, I can't wait for your comeback to keep the big bore's honest. Good Luck!
Patrick Olsen 05-07-2005 06:39 AM

Luke, tough decision, but I think you did the right thing. No point in trying to go out on track when you're hurt and probably not on your game mentally, either. (I know I wasn't "right" at the next track event I went to after flipping my car). Glad you're OK (for the most part) and good luck next year.

Thanks Luke. I was hoping that you didn't mind us tearing into the car before you got back to the pits. :) I enjoyed working on the Subaru. I just wish it was under different circumstances.

Luke, Thanks, and you kick ass. You had us covered hands down and I look forward to going head to head with you again. I hope you and the car recover quickly.

Enrique, same to you.. This class isn't getting any easier, and I think in the future with the very fast SRT-4s, the STi's and the Evo's we are going to be putting ourselves up in the top 5, fighting with Factory Hennessey Vipers, GT Porsches, and well sorted and reliable Z06s.. In 4 door, $30k sedans.

Congrats to all of you guys who put in the effort to come out and do it.

Luke,
When you were still in the event, we didn't even look at the class results, knowing we didn't have a chance to even get on the podium. After you left, and everybody else looked at you as a reality check, the SRT-4 floated to the top of the class.

You need to come back next year, the class was yours, come back and take it.

If you are ready to see them, my team has the only still images of your car (from the corner station) as you came in and launched out. The two videos are up, as far as I know, my guys have not posted up the still sequence though.

Get better, fix the car, continue kicking ass...

Regards,
Dale
hyedracyl 05-09-2005 10:41 PM

Wow, great battle this year. Lots of well prepared cars and up to the task drivers.

Luke simply rose to another level in this event. I don't know whether the other competitors (outside of the MPS class that is) overlooked him and inspired him to kick their butts, but he sure did. He definitely showed a LOT of growth as a driver from what he did back in 2003 - which was damn respectable if you ask me (and I told him so after the 03 event too). He'll be back, and much wiser from his mistake next time around. He also won't get overlooked by ANYONE out there, no matter how good that they are, or think that they are.

Enrique and Richard were another interesting story this year. I've known Enrique for quite some time now and have really enjoyed his personal development as a driver. Nobody is going to overlook him ever again I'll tell you that for sure. Richard had some tough moments out there this year, but when he re-assessed the situation and got back in the car, he showed that he can do the job just as well as anyone else out there. These two make a hell of a team if you ask me. Oh, and that rig of theirs was AMAZING.

Dale is my buddy, a friend from back in our initial OLOA entrance back in 98. He's single minded, and successful at whatever he sets his mind to accomplish. I look forward greatly to his spending time with Brian Smith to aid in the expansion of his driving ability to match his demonstrated auto development skills. I've helped Dale out in the past, and I'll continue to help him out in the future. They don't get much better than this guy, believe me.

I met Jon back in 03 and he's a very capable driver who I anticipate will accomplish much in his lifetime. A real pleasant guy who will surely be back once again to torment the guys at the top of the standings. Jon, I hope that you enjoyed your stint behind the wheel of the Radical - but I don't expect that you're going to extracate that ride out of Damon's hands any time soon! I'm just glad that we didn't meet up with any of the local authorities during your joyride behind the wheel of that car!

As for the Schautt's, how many other father/son teams can take a practically bone stock STI (purchased recently before OLOA, and likely to be disposed of equally quickly now that the event is over - an idea that made a big impression upon me, and one that I might experiment with myself in the future) and consistently run times only marginally off of those previously mentioned teams. These guys are equals behind the wheel and I really hope that they elect to come back. The event is always richer with such nice (and talented) people amongst the entrants.

As for myself, it was a tough year. The cars out there have progressed significantly since my last Subaru run in 2002... That and the elimination of practice events that my work schedule has forced upon me conspired to put some MAJOR rust on ye olde driving skills. I made a lot of mistakes this year that I shouldn't have. Hopefully, none of those will be repeated next time around... I don't know what I'll be driving at that point, but I certainly wouldn't mind returning to this particular class and being surrounded by such a great group of drivers and vehicles. Till next year, here's to successful adventures for all of you!

Rumor has it someone stuffed 285's on Rota Slipsteams on an STi at 1lap. Anyone have pictures of that?
dwx 05-10-2005 12:44 AM

Good writeup Greg.

I don't know of anyone running 285s. I think the Dynocomp STI and Luke were running 245s. The AMS EVO had 285s, but not on Rota Slipstreams.
lukerussell 05-10-2005 08:21 AM

i had the widest tires on an STi - 255s. rota torques w/ a 5mm spacer and rolled fenders. the ams evo had 285's.

luke
CirrusWRX 05-10-2005 01:07 PM

luke - congrats on everything you've accomplished. I am in agreement with Pat Olsen that it was probably wise to call it when you did. It just would not have been the best decision IMO to continue in both your current physical AND, almost more importantly, mental state.

You're not forgoing millions of dollars of prize money, or 18 year old nympho's wanting a piece of your success. You're going to come out of this experience a much better driver and while it may not hit you for a while, when it does, (ie. you do something you didn't think you were capable of doing) that will be the magic moment that makes your decision justified.

Way to go representing the subaru community! Your attitude and your skills will certainly allow you to acheive both on and off the track.
