Moshi Moshi Mr. Solberg: Rally Japan starts Friday! (official thread)
Well, Solberg won this event last year, hopefully he can repeat :)
WRXedUSA 09-24-2005 02:00 PM

Daniel Carlsson has replaced Markko.

Mikko Hirvonen is driving the #2 Skoda

It will be between Sebby, Petter and Francios I think.

I'm just feeling 'meh' at best after rally GB. :(
WagonMonster 09-24-2005 02:03 PM

Yeah, what happened in GB does kinda put a cloud on things. But the best way to deal with it is to get on with the show.
wvallwheeldrive 09-24-2005 03:12 PM

is Loab going to drive this one or did Puegot(spelling) pull out
Thumper23 09-24-2005 03:15 PM
is Loab going to drive this one or did Puegot(spelling) pull out
wondering that too

anywho, GO PETTER!!
WagonMonster 09-24-2005 03:27 PM

Loeb drives a Citroen, so I assume he'll be there.

And, if you had read WRXedUSA's post, you'd know that Peugeot will be there too.
wvallwheeldrive 09-24-2005 03:44 PM

oh my bad i confuse the 2 often
bemani 09-24-2005 03:55 PM

Will Petter settle for just some points or go for broke?
WRXedUSA 09-24-2005 09:35 PM

Go for broke. It's home soil

He can't possibly win the champtionship. Loeb only needs 6 points to clinch, and he can make that up on the next tarmac round.
Rallycarperson 09-24-2005 11:30 PM

Yeah, Solberg should push hard to impress Subaru here. Now that the championship is gone...theres not as much pressure on him for the next few events.

Go Petter!

~Mark
FaastLegacy 09-25-2005 10:39 AM

Petter's going for it all, being it's the home crowd and all.
datageek 09-25-2005 03:31 PM
Duval didn't even finish the event last year, so I'm not expecting him to be at the top of the competition. I expect that probably Sebastien or maybe Petter will win. Though I half hope that Marcus does. I think it would be fitting, somehow.

The trees are really close and the roads are really narrow in Japan. I think a lot of people will be going a lot more cautiously than usual.

The weather for the rally looks like it will be really nice, though partly cloudy through Saturday and Sunday.
I'm just feeling 'meh' at best after rally GB. :(
Yeah... It's going to be hard getting too excited about the rally this time.
So Cal STI 09-25-2005 06:30 PM

We'll see what Petter has for the home office-although he was very good in GB he did'nt pull it off. Loeb is very strong this year. hopefully they (SWRT) can gain consistancy and get better results next year.
8Complex 09-26-2005 09:56 AM

For those that want a shred of information, it's being run Sept. 30th - Oct. 2nd.
WagonMonster 09-26-2005 12:29 PM
For those that want a shred of information, it's being run Sept. 30th - Oct. 2nd.
What is up your ass about this?

It starts FRIDAY, I change the thread title as appropriate.

Come Friday, I'll change it to TODAY.

Besides, anyone who posts in this thread knows when the rally is anyway.
8Complex 09-26-2005 01:13 PM

How hard is it to post a date, really?

It's like saying "if you're not a hardcore enough fan to go look at the WRC website, we're not going to tell you when it really is".
WagonMonster 09-26-2005 01:42 PM

What?

"Friday" isn't descriptive enough for you?

I'd have to look on a Calendar to tell you when Sept 30 is, but, I KNOW when Friday is.
datageek 09-26-2005 02:28 PM

Heh... Because of an odd quirk of time zone differences for those of us in North America the rally actually starts on Thursday, local time. (Yes, I'm being a brat. :P)

Guys, seriously. On the one hand it's not that hard to put the dates somewhere in the post. On the other hand, it's really not that hard to go to WRC.com and check the dates. So can we get off the whole dates question and get back to talking about rallying?

The weather forecast for the area where the rally is run is currently calling for partly cloudy on Friday, scattered showers on Saturday, and cloudy on Sunday.

Cool, I'll have to look for the ad

Rally Japan should be interesting to see how they handle the TV show post accident.
One of these days I will make it to that event, but it is always scheduled too close to my annual trip to Japan
Blackboxracing 09-27-2005 06:32 PM

where is the best coverage of the rally?? Online vid, speed chanel??

You know, that's supposed to make it easier, not harder! I mean, you've already got that pesky ocean out of the way, what's a few more days and a few more miles? :P Oh well, I'm looking forward to seeing your pictures whenever you do get there.

I want to go sometime, but bang for buck I'm not sure it will be worth it. Ticket prices are the highest out of all the WRC events, and there aren't that many stages that are open to spectators.

A few pics from an event at the Obihiro Subaru can be found here. Man, Petter reeeeally needs to get a haircut!

Weather forecast is still calling for showers on Sunday. Friday and Saturday look like they will be clear.

Shakedown starts in three and a half hours. It's really weird being awake while it's running.

I go to Japan annually for New Years to visit family, rally is scheduled too close to make two trips, yet too far to make it one big trip :(
datageek 09-29-2005 01:57 AM

Shakedown times
Chris Atkinson was fastest at shakedown! Which shouldn't be so much of a surprise I suppose, since I think he's got more experience of the event than anyone else, since he's done it three times before as part of the Asia-Pacific Championship.

Rally Japan shakedown times
1 Atkinson (Subaru) 3m06.6s
2 Solberg (Subaru) 3m10.3s
3 Duval (Citroen) 3m10.5s
4 Gronholm (Citroen) 3m10.6s
5 Loeb (Citroen) 3m11.1s
= Schwarz (Skoda) 3m11.1s
7 Hirvonen (Skoda) 3m11.6s
8 Carlsson (Peugeot) 3m11.7s
9 Gardemeister (Ford) 3m12.2s
10 Rovanpera (Mitsubishi) 3m12.4s
11 Galli (Mitsubishi) 3m13.8s *
= Warmbold (Ford) 3m13.8s **
13 Kresta (Ford) 3m14.6s
14 Panizzi (Mitsubishi) 3m15.8s
15 Sola (Ford) 3m16.1s
* third works car (not registered for manufacturers' points)
** privateer entry
Rallycarperson 09-29-2005 05:33 PM

Yes, that is true...Chris has run Rally Japan many times before in different cars in the Asia-Pacific Chapionship. It'll be interesting to see how he does...but Im not expecting any miracles.

But, as usual the shakedown times have rarely anything to do with the real stage times...

~Mark
Anibalz 09-29-2005 08:46 PM

Well, Chris is leading the rally after SS3! Closely followed by Petter, 4.4 secs behind.

WRXedUSA 09-30-2005 09:39 AM

Explain me this:

Why the hell didnt Mitsubishi nominate Galli for points??

Poor Hirvonen out on technical problems, he was riding in 4th.

Road position is key here.
Anibalz 09-30-2005 11:50 AM

Neither Panizzi or Galli have compted in Japan before, so I'm guessing they decided to give Gilles the chance.
ottawars 09-30-2005 12:02 PM

Keep it up Solberg! Lancia Delta Integrale and the Subaru Impreza have 46 WRC wins each. One more and the Subie will be the most successful rally car in WRC history.

Really? I would have guessed like the old Ford Escort.

But anyways, Im really impressed at Subaru's pace this rally. w00t!!

God I hate this white trash town I had to move too. The cable company doesn't even have f'n ESPN. Stupid ass redneck farmers  Thanks for the rally radio link. I used to use it from wrc.com when they offered it for free now I have missed half the rally season this year. :( Is there any source for tv coverage which can be downloaded?
Anibalz 10-02-2005 12:04 AM

Petter's Out on SS25. :furious: They hit a rock less than 1 Km from the start and damaged the suspension. :(
datageek 10-02-2005 12:31 AM

Wow, what a bittersweet, exciting rally. Petter out, but Chris on the podium. And close-fought battles throughout the entire event, all up and down the leaderboard. I think next to Mexico (which I was at) this is the one event I've enjoyed the best this year.

Major kudos are due to Marcus, Timo, and the entire Peugeot team. It's incredible that in less than two weeks they were able to regroup from the accident in Wales and pull out a win.

There's a thread in the sticky section where you can talk about rally Japan. There's usually one for every rally in the sticky section so you can talk about them freely.
But yes, I know, I was listening to Rally Radio when it happened. Very Bad luck for Petter.
FastSS 10-02-2005 03:39 AM

I like seeing Gronholm take the win, but I'm not a fan of any frenchman, let alone a frenchie driving a french car.

I think Solberg is damn good, just seems to me he is never comfortable.

Well...this sucks...

I'm sure Mr. Subaru isn't thrilled either.

That would have happened to anyone running that line, did you guys see what looked to be the brake disk, broken in half, lieing next to the rock?

This has been the story of Petter's year though.... :(
That was no crack up by Petter.

If he's leading by 20s+, he didn't need to push so hard that he cannot adjust his line at all.
