plasti-dip

Hey guys,
In another thread on here someone mentioned this stuff Plasti-dip. After looking it up online, I found several places that have it in rattlecan form.
I was thinking this would be cool to spray my plastic trim around the bottom of the doors with this stuff, due to the rubberized finish. However, I haven't found any in any other color than yellow... does anyone know if they make the stuff (or something similar) in black?

I've seen it in paint buckets in yellow and blue, but never in a rattle can. It seems like that stuff would just peel off eventually.
| sheepdog | 03-14-2007 03:47 PM |
Nevermind, I'm retarded. Googled "Plasti-dip black" and found it right away lol.
I'll let you guys know how it turns out.

Are you doing this for visual purposes only, or is there something else you're trying to acheive? Just curious.
| sheepdog | 03-14-2007 04:07 PM |
Kind of a twofold reason. Firstly, I've been converting my old tan L interior to black to match my wrx dash, and despite Rustoleum textured paint for plastic's durability, it just isn't enough for the daily abuse of those high traffic pieces. I figured the rubberized coating would work well, be easy to clean, and i doubt it would look bad. If it bonds to the plastic right, which several people have assured me it will, it could be a cool solution for those particular pieces.
| rkramer | 03-14-2007 05:12 PM |
plastidip bonds to about everything! it is a huge pain to get off anything you don't mean to have it on. i use it often for wire joints that need to be waterproof, also use it for tools and RC car electronics. (servos can be dipped in plasti-dip)
| sheepdog | 03-14-2007 08:02 PM |
nice! A hardware store has some near me, so I'll be pickin some up and experimenting with it.
| Capt Crunch | 03-14-2007 08:38 PM |
From what I gather, Lowes stocks the stuff.
| LOLerskates | 03-14-2007 08:53 PM |
i just bought some form lowes an hour ago, in the paint section. about 5 bucks a can. it owns...my wanna be s204 interior is drying as we speak

I demand pictures! I'm stoked to try this

...I have dealt with it in the past....READ and FOLLOW the directions ! ! !
Do NOT get it on anything other than what ya want it on ! ! !
It takes longer to completely cure than you THINK ;)

LOLerskates, I did the radio trim with the black plasti-dip rattlecan stuff and it looks great, easy to clean, and holds up to just about everything you throw at it.
| JBravo920 | 03-15-2007 05:21 PM |
Lowes for sure. I did my interior trim with plasti-dip black from a rattle can...that stuff is sweet.

You need to post pics
| sheepdog | 03-15-2007 08:16 PM |
I picked up four rattlecans of the stuff today, and will be spraying various bits of my trim shortly, including the rotating part of the hvac knobs, I think it'll be sick for those to be rubberized! I'll post pictures as soon as it's dry.

Sorry, I've been messing with it and forgot. I'll get a few and post them up, along with some lessons learned. Give me 20 min.

OK guys, here's the synopsis. This stuff is great. However, there are some things to watch out for, which luckily I seem to have run into so you don't have to.
First off: I had originally painted these pieces in Rustoleum textured paint for plastics. It was sticking well, except on these pieces where stuff scratched against them heavily a lot. Anyways, I figured it would be ok to just wash them and spray over it. I was incorrect. The plasti-dip sticks to the paint, then peels off and leaves the original tan plastic panel. Luckily this happened on my test piece before I sprayed all of them.
So I peel off the plasti-dip (worked well, kinda comes off like contact paper or something) and then proceeded to sand the pieces. I used 120 grit I think, since it was what I had, and I figured the plasti-dip would go on thick enough to hide the scratch marks left by the sandpaper. I was wrong again. The spray on plasti-dip is not as thick as the paint on or dip on versions, and it recommends you do several layers. Even then, the sand marks were really obvious. I re-sanded the panels with 220 grit, and it made a huge difference, but I think the damage was done. It doesn't look awful, and they'll do for now, but I'm going to keep my eyes out for new panels so I can start from scratch eventually.
But on to the good news. This stuff owns. If prepped correctly (which you should be able to do now) it sticks to the panels amazing. I've tested them with my fingernails, a flattip screwdriver, the works, and there is really no situation these panels would encounter that would cause this stuff to scratch off. And, it looks great, like a flat black. Here's a couple pictures of how mine turned out, but remember they still look kinda crappy from the sandpaper incident.

Also, I pulled apart my hvac knobs and sprayed the part that turns with it, this was after my experience with the other pieces. Light grit sandpaper and a wash, then 4 coats of plasti-dip. It came out great, and it's pretty sweet having a rubberized grip feel on those knobs. The rest of the parts were sprayed with the textured paint for plastic, and the JDM s204 center buttons should be here sometime in the next month. I also stuck my new Clarion head unit in there, to give you a better idea of how it would look in the dash, but also just to show it off :D

what colors does it come in? and is that the stock texture on the panels i see or is it a texture you get from the plastic-dip?
| sheepdog | 03-19-2007 03:09 PM |
I'm unsure what colors it comes in, I know it comes in yellow and several others.
As for the texture, on the interior panels you can see the original vinyl ish pattern through the plasti-dip. The spray in and of itself has almost no texture.

okay i might have to pick some up tonight... how long do you let it dry until you apply the next coat and how many coats? how is the rubber texture?
| sheepdog | 03-19-2007 03:28 PM |
It says to let it dry a minimum of 30 min between coats, and I stuck to that pretty well. I've done anywhere from 4 coats on those knobs, to 10 on some of the door strips. It's just how thick you want the rubber. When in doubt, go for more lighter coats than fewer heavy ones, I've noticed it doesn't look as nice if you spray it on really thick.
The rubber texture is awesome though, and really durable.

Sheepdog....I love the pics, and have the same radio. Can you please post pics of everything installed during the day?....that would be great.
| sheepdog | 03-20-2007 11:35 AM |
I will, but the car is going into the body shop today. Might not get all this stuff installed for a week or two. I'll post it up as soon as I do though.
How do you like that head unit? I just got it and it's never been in the car before.

Nice... what is that cnet thing? It sounds sick, but I'm car audio retarded. It's just never something I took time to learn anything about haha.
| Kahres05 | 03-20-2007 02:41 PM |
Cnet...is the ability of having multiple devices that all inter connect with each other; almost like adding external hardware to a computer. Your head unit see's your devices and then you have the ability to use them. The Clairon sirius unit connects through Cnet and from the Sirius unit you can plug (Cnet plug) in a cd changer or a tv tuner, Ipod adapter, etc....
| Kahres05 | 03-20-2007 03:05 PM |
I picked up a can of this stuff, sheepdog only used it on the knobs and panels...has anyone tried doing the whole radio surround with it?
| sheepdog | 03-20-2007 03:28 PM |
Yea, someone did it in the "s204 look alike interior" thread. He said it looked awesome
| Kahres05 | 03-20-2007 03:41 PM |
Cool...looks like I'm going do some painting tonight....this is all your fault sheepdog...if you didnt post your pic of the paint job with the radio I wouldent even be doing this...lol. But it looks so damn good...I have to do it now.
| jet8300 | 03-20-2007 08:27 PM |
I have to admit I was very skeptical of the results, but that looks pretty damn good!
| jimbobrand | 03-20-2007 08:44 PM |
I'm using the Plasti-dip black on my silver interior trim and its drying right now. So far it looks and feels great and should go well with my STI limited red hazard button.
| Kahres05 | 03-20-2007 09:08 PM |
I finished my whole install. I did all the silver on the center console...minus the HVAC knobs and the hazard button.....looks really sharp. My Clarion head unit no longer looks out of place....tip...I used a hair dryer. I was able to do the whole install in 2 hours that's including taking out the pieces and installing them....and I painted 4 coats on 4 major parts...took about 2 minutes to dry a whole piece to the touch with a hair dryer.
| sheepdog | 03-20-2007 09:22 PM |
Nice! Post pictures :) My car's in the body shop, and the junkyard I ordered my hood from screwed me and now I need to find another one, so it'll be a couple weeks before I can re install all my stuff. However, my reinstall will be like a whole new interior going in! lol.
Did you not do the rotating part of the knobs? Thats one of my favorite parts! It's so sick rubberized. And yea, the stuff dries to the touch in like 5 min max without the hair dryer, I just stuck to the guidelines on the can. It says to let it cure 4 hours before scratching or anything though.
Edit: Oh, and before I sent the car off today, I pulled my windshield wiper arms, which were getting faded and kinda rusty. Sanded and sprayed them too, I'll post pics later.

It was pretty easy actually. Once you disassemble it all down so you have the circut board with them attatched to it, you just pull them off.

Just an added note....from what I can tell, this stuff is not coming off unless there is constant friction.... or something really sharp really scratches it...it's a lot more durable than paint.
| skate enjoi | 03-21-2007 11:45 AM |
do you think this stuff would stick to my entire dash and headliner?
| Kahres05 | 03-21-2007 11:54 AM |
LOL....yes to anything that is metal or plastic....headliner...I says on there web site "Rope/Fabrics: weatherproofs, prevents rotting and fraying."...sounds to me it will work. If you do it we definitely need pictures of that!...please check out that link to there web site listed above...it tells you everything you need to know about it.
| sheepdog | 03-21-2007 01:05 PM |
Yea, It'll stick. I'm actually spraying my center console right now, I'm addicted to plasti-dip  So far I've only done the cover for the center console compartment, the cover for the rear cupholder area, and the cupholders themselves. Seeing as these pieces are the same material it looks like as the dash, I'd say it'll stick. It looks great, and I'll be doing all the way up to in front of the shifter with it. If I down the line get the dash top done in suede like I want, I'll match the lower half of the dash in plasti-dip as well.
Looks great kahres ;) I can't wait to get mine in!

Couldn't be happier, this stuff is terrific.
HVAC faces look pretty light in these crappy pics but in real life it matches up nicely.
