Can we get a "fix those rattles" thread going?

Seems liek there's a Lot of repeated questions of rattles.
So I'll just list what I got from various threads.
SOLVED
1. Steering column rattle - This seems like it's the Cruize control button.
Solution - Take stalk apart, remove button, spring and ball, stretch spring. reinsert. no more rattle
2. Rear window rattle - This seems to be the seat bracket
Solution - Take the reat seat back out. The center latch on the seat rattles against the hook bolt. Put some dynamat or some durable thick rubber on top of the bolt head. *note* i put dynamat, it worked for a few months.. but it wore through.. and started ratteling again.. next will be piece of thick leather.
3. passenger Door rattle - this seems to be wiring rattleing against the inner door panel or the cover. Use some sticky foam and wrap wires..
4. wagon spare tire rattle thanks "sjl1614" for solution
solution - Where the spare tire "cover" sits down and rests of the plastic trim, right under there, the trim sits on metal tabs. Which is the souce of the rattle. use some foam tape on the metal tabs and the noise is gone - sjl1614
5. Drivers side door handle thanks "Flat4 STI"
solution - Drivers side door handle, where you pull the door closed would rattle. 3m double sided tape on the bottom of it where the screw pokes through.
6. Steering column top plastic rattle thanks "Flat4 STI"
Solution - 3M double sided tape,Once you take off the top piece of plastic, nearest the steering wheel theres a piece of plastic that sticks up,I used two layers to touch the column plastic pieceAlso about the middle of the steering plastic piece i put another piece of 3M there also.Kinda hard to descibe.
7. Rear deck area rattle where third brake light is "Flat4 STI"
Solution - center seat belt plastic cover in trunk was loose, the piece that covers the retract part,Silicone around top edge to hold it in place.
8. high pitch rattle behind ear thanks "gh32"
Solution - Very faint metal-on-metal high-pitched noise that took me a while to identify. Turns out it was the zipper on the passenger seat on the top of the pass-through (roughly behind where your neck is). Easily fixed with a piece of tape.
9. glove box key hole
Solution - try using some thick silicone grease? if the problem is within the lock, if its outside then, remove the unit and add 3M windows seal
10. glove box rattle thanks "hank3"
Solution - I had the glove box rattle and what I did was wrap some black electrical tape around the U-shaped bracket the door latch attaches to. That fixed the rattle
UNSOLVED
1. Seatbelt top cover rattle - I put this on unsolved because to me removing outright is not a solution.
2. Driver side A Pillar, Vent cover - put puressure on the vent cover piece by the A-Pillar and rattle stops. -
Things I tried
- siliconing the white clips..
- taping the vent cover piece to the bottom piece..
- strips of fuzzy side of velcro (helped a bit but still there)
- removing the entire vent cover
*edit you can emulate this sound by pushing down on the vent piece. repeat until you have the right speed and pressure.. the only way i see to solve this it to jam some thick cloth to maintain the pressure, or take the dash apart... i have not done this yet...
3. Steering column rattle - left wheel goes over bumps - when only the left front wheel goes over the bumps the whole steering column shutters... I dont' think there's going to be a solution to this..
4. Rearview mirror - if you have warrenty left then it's all good but what if you don't? any one have a fix for this?
anyone else like to add?

Thank you!!!!!!!! I have tried everything and had all but given up- I will try this and see if its a fix.........I always thought it was where the rear seatbelt ties into the upper panel but after tearing all that out it was still there. I did notice the sound disappeared when two people sat in the rear seat so I took out the rear seat and looked all over for something rattling....I ended up pulling out the plastic box that covers the middle seatbelt tensioner that hangs through the rear deck. This still didnt fix it!

Seatbelt Whine/Squeak

Most owners report that the seatbelt squeaks when you use it. It's the belt rubbing against small plastic ribs on the inside of the lower B-pillar trim piece.
Remove the piece and grind down the ribs...no more squeak.

Im gonna try the rear window rattle cuz wow that pisses me off so much..
And for the vent rattle... press down a bit and it stops... have no clue i think its the clips in the a pillar... but cant really guarantee that is the sure fix for it.

My wagon rattles in the back some where. I thought it was the venetian blind luggage cover and/or some bungie cords on top of the spare. I took them both out and it still rattles. Sounds like it is coming from the spare tire area, but everything seems to be tight there.
Any ideas?

I have been having a noise which seems to be coming from between my windshield and dashboard. I knwo it is from the cold weather. Anyone else?
| BurtonCR | 12-09-2005 09:42 PM |
Its the vent cover. I fixed it by pulling the vent cover out, removing the white clips, putting black silcone on the inside of the clip (made by permetex - same company that makes RTV), and then reinstalling the clips. Let that dry over night and then reinstall the vent cover.
| suren27 | 12-09-2005 09:55 PM |
Interesting... I am going to try that Burton... how hard is it to remove the vent cover?
And does this have anything to do with the cover to the left of the steering wheel on the same level as it... not near the a pillar?

Might also be the infamous VIN plate rattle. There's a fix for that posted somewhere around here.
OP- Sorry, wish I could help. I'm a devout rattle hunter but haven't had any of the ones you named except the cruise control stalk rattle.

And with the cruise control stalk... did any of you guys ever think its the plastic cover going around the steering coloumn? Cuz that is what I think is rattling now...

I had that rattle too. You could bump the horn button with your palm, softly without honking the horn, and you will hear the rattle. But the techs at the dealership correctly said it was the cruise control stalk and fixed it under warranty.

My sti rear-view mirror rattles and buzzes when the bass hits. My stereo is not bass heavy. Rattle sounds start at about volume level 25 on the stock deck. It makes everthing sound like crap. If i want to hear the music i can hold the mirror steady wth my hand. Anyone have a solution? I cant tell if something inside the mirror is making the noise, or if the mirror rattles against the windsheild at the mount. Anyone ever tried to take one of these mirrors apart?
| suren27 | 12-10-2005 12:03 AM |
Get it replaced under warranty... mine did the same... i got it exchanged under warranty and no more rear view mirro rattle or buzz.. this is with the optional auto dimming compass mirror... usually when you get a firm grip on it and squeeze... you can reproduce the sound... if they dont believe you on the dealership go do that to any other subaru on thier showroom floor

I have been looking for my rattle for quite some time and found out to be the center console. I removed the console from my car, just a few screws to loosen not a big deal. After I removed the center console I looked underneath it and found like a metal box that was a bit loose and it would rub against the edges of the console. I used adhesive in all the edges and ever since then no more rattles for me.
Also I had a rattle coming from the rear window which happened to be the brake light that sits on the back panel. The screws were loose and was rattling when I went over bumps and especially on the freeway. I tightened those screws and the rattle is gone.

I have one in the fromt passenger door pocket. When there is a song with bass it will vibrate. So far my fix has been stuffing a little towel in there to absorb the sound, Ive been meaning to take off that panel to see what vibrates behind the pocket. LOL

My 04 WRX has/had several.
Drivers side door handle, where you pull the door closed would rattle.
Fix:3m double sided tape on the bottom of it where the screw pokes through.
Steering column top plastic rattled.
Fix: 3M double sided tape,Once you take off the top piece of plastic, nearest the steering wheel theres a piece of plastic that sticks up,I used two layers to touch the column plastic pieceAlso about the middle of the steering plastic piece i put another piece of 3M there also.Kinda hard to descibe.
Rear deck area rattle where third brake light is
Fix: Center seat belt plastic cover in trunk was loose, the piece that covers the retract part,Silicone around top edge to hold it in place.
Many more to find still but now i have some ideas where to look
Thanks to all

Seems like my whole car is a rattle. sounds like my rear window near the headliner rattles. My rear deck does. I had screwed it down before and that almost eliminated the rattle back there but I had to take them out and now its worse than b4
The rear window rattle is also caused by the seals around the window expanding/contracting with heat and cold. It happens primarily in the cold when the seals contract and the window is able to move a bit more with chassis flex...unfortunately, there's not a ton that can be done for this other than trying to keep the inside of the vehicle very warm or turning up your stereo more.
Another cause can be suspension upgrades. After a suspension upgrade the chassis is now under more stress as the stiffer upgraded shocks and springs don't react as much as the OEM ones, sending more street impact to the chassis. The chassis flexes, putting more stress on the seals that hold the window in...eventually causing it to rattle. Once again, it's a pain, but can be reduced somewhat by reducing body/chassis flex/roll with larger and stiffer sway bars and, to some degree, strut tower bars.

Thanks for the info- this must be what it is because it seemed to start after I upgrades springs and struts. I have removed just about everthing in the rear of the car or tied it down- from the gas cap to the trunk tensioning system and nothing has helped! I have removed seatbelts and every trim peice and its still there so I chalked it up to something with the rear strut assembly or now I guess it could be the window rattle.

SOLVED:
1) Cruise Control arm rattled. I just took it apart and reassembled it and made sure to screw everything snugly and it was fixed! (Didn't have to adjust the spring or anything)
2) Very faint metal-on-metal high-pitched noise that took me a while to identify. Turns out it was the zipper on the passenger seat on the top of the pass-through (roughly behind where your neck is). Easily fixed with a piece of tape.
UNSOLVED:
The plastic surround around my steering column rattles/squeaks when going over bumps in the road. It started after I took it apart to get at the ignition harness for my guages. I thought I screwed everything in tightly afterwards, but I'll check again.

I solved the steering column plastic rattles by simply removing the bottom portion (only 1 screw and a bunch of tabs hold it together). I then applied some double-sides foam weather stripping to it and cut any excess off and reassembled.
I also fixed the cruise control rattle a little differently by simply putting a small bit of electrical tape between the PCB and the plastic. The rattle it due to the PCB loose inside the plastic stalk.

3. Door rattle - this seems to be wiring rattleing against the inner door panel or the cover. Use some sticky foam and wrap wires..
UNSOLVED
1. Seatbelt top cover rattle - I put this on unsolved because to me removing outright is not a solution.
2. Driver side A Pillar - put puressure on the vent cover piece by the A-Pillar and rattle stops. - I tried siliconing the white clips.. taping the vent cover piece to the bottom piece.. neither worked
3. Steering column rattle - left wheel goes over bumps - when only the left front wheel goes over the bumps the whole steering column shutters... I dont' think there's going to be a solution to this..
anyone else like to add?
the seatbelt top cover rattle passanger rear should be a recall it seems
all imprezas have this one i no mine does.
So I'll just list what I got from various threads.

You must have lucked out with the Hondas because the Hondas I've owned rattled just as much as my Subaru.
Anybody got a fix for rear view mirror (w/compass) rattle?
if the rattle is coming from where it attaches to the windshield, you need to either replace the u-spring, or remove the mirror and bend yours closed a bit then re-install the mirror.

I also had the VIN Plate rattle/vent rattle. The silicon on white clips fixed about 95% of the rattles. I reinforced it more by sticking padding between the trim piece and dash and now the rattle is 100% gone.
I also had the B-pillar/seatbelt rattle. Did a search on nabsico and winded up taking off the trim pieces associated with the B-pillar and tightened up things. What ultimately fixed it was my anger and frustration actually. I had all of the pieces off and just took my hand and slapped everything back there, grabbed a few pieces and yanked them. After that, the rattle was gone. There are some good old threads about fixing the B-pillar rattle.

Has the u-joint in the column been looked at yet? If that's not the issue, it's time to take the steering wheel off and start taking the column apart. GM's, especially the Caddy's, used to loosen up. Half of the column had to be taken apart to tighten a couple of torx bolts. This was part of the tilt column assembly. Columns are very tricky, so if someone dares to attempt this, take zillions of pictures and have a safe place to store the tiny parts. Tamper proof torx bits may be necessary.
My car has a rattle coming from the plastic cover that's below the column (by your knees).. if I put some pressure on the right upper edge it stops. I have yet to try and fix it since I'm lazy - plus I usually forget about it by the time I get home. Is this a common rattle?

I have recently notice a rattle from the plastic piece that surround the dash (the piece that some people replace to put 2 gauges on each end).. I can stop it by pressing it, but i have not tried anything else to fix it...
anyone else has that?

Solution - Take the reat seat back out. The center latch on the seat rattles against the hook bolt. OK, just took a drive with my girlfriend so I could find out exactly where my rear-window (the very back one, technically called a "back-light") rattle/tapping is coming from and hopefully describe it in detail.
I'm almost 100% positive that it's coming from the joint where the back window meets the roof under the headliner. When I pull the headliner down the sound definitely gets louder. It may also be coming from the side and bottom rear-window joints, but I can't get my head close enough to those areas to be certain...lol.
The best way I can describe the sound is like several girls tapping their fingernails on a desk, but really fast, so fast in fact, that it almost sounds like a scraping sound at times. The sound is quite brite, and certainly suggests that the joints holding the rear-window in are compromised.
Has anyone fixed this one?

my VIN tag rattles! at first I thought it was the driver defrost vent but oh no my VIN tag rattles too! I guess it's a little loose like the rivets didn't get tight enough. so just picture me going down the road one hand on the wheel and the other on my VIN tag. ha ha :)
p.s. those two are my only rattles though so I feel lucky compared to some of you :p

You and me both brother. No fix, but that is my EXACT prob. Car doesn't have any other major rattles, except this one. I too pulled the plastic housing ooff from the driver's rear seatbelt area and the noise was definately louder.
I am going to check the seat bolts but I am almost postive the noise is coming from head level, behind that panel. My first impression when I heard the noise was that the rear window was shifting in the rubber trim.
If I can't fix the prob by this week, I'm going to the dealer (or car window comp.) and asking how much to pull my rear window out, and reseat it with some thicker/different trim.
Sound is described as above, fingernail on window noise worsened by temperature drops. If I drive on a smooth road it won't do it, until I swurve back and forth (like an F1 tire warm up move).
My car is 11 months old with 30K miles and I noticed this about 5-8K ago. wouldn't think it would be my struts/shocks.
Again, I will check the backseat bolts and post back, but I'm 92% sure thats not it.

I wouldnt waste my time with the seat bolt- I unbolted all three rear seat belt assemblies along with removing back seat, deck, all trunk material- basically everthing non structural and not the headliner- rattle is still there. It has to be the rear window or some suspension rattling- although I notice it more when cold so rear window sounds very feasible. I need a fix before i break out my rear window with a hammer!

I'm soooooo happy I'm not alone. Honestly, if I could get this one rattle/tap fixed I'd be happy, no need to chase down the rest. Keep us posted on what the dealer says DJ.

Not really a rattle, but a creak. I used to have a creak coming from the back everytime the car would transfer weight (left to right, right to left) when cornering. Lots of threads on this issue, but my problem had nothing to do with the suspension. It was the two vertical brackets behind the rear seat, on either side of the armrest. I was surprised to see that they had somehow loosened themselves over the period of time, once I torqued those the creak was gone. As far as I know, this only applies to sedans, unless wagons have these brackets as well?
