A good idea, I will probably give it a shot. From what I've read about the spray stuff, it does not coat in an even manner.

I thought it was more the liquid itself, but I do have a few can tips from painscratch lying around. I'll give it a go on a piece of scrap metal first to see how it comes out.

Did mine a few months ago, it`s holding up really well, no marks or scratches whatsoever.
Though it does seem to attract dust somewhat :)

I'll take some pictures for you when I get a chance (tomorrow) it looks like perhaps the style of painting leads to different finishes. -Because mine is pretty close to flat black, and more textured than some of the ones found here.... I LOVE the way mine came out!

I'm thinking about doing mine since my trim got all scratched up on one side. Unfortunately I have the CD player that's the same color as the trim as opposed to the black CD player. It doesn't look as bad on the 06-07's since they at least have the HVAC knobs that are the same color. What do you guys think.....leave it as is or plasti-dip it? I just can't decide how it will look with the silver CD player.

hey guys just wondering if this would be a good idea.. I have some springs on a set of coilovers that are a bit chipped and flaking. would it be a decent idea to sandblast the springs and then use plasti dip? is the paint flexible enough? do you think it would withstand the elements?

Hmm so far I like the look of these projects. I have an 07 Sti and it kind of annoyes me how the bottom half of the interior and dash is black/blue, and then the pillars and headliner is a light color.
I was thinking of plasti-diping the pillars and dying the headliner black. Thoughts?

It is all about spray diffusion. I did mine from a fairly close position and put a heavy coat on each time. They guys that wanted and got a more matte finish simply did lighter more diffuse coats. When theirs dried, each little droplet of spray kept it's shape. With a shiner finish, all the little droplets dry together....get it? There is some guy on here who has a REALLY rough finish. It almost looks like fine truck bed liner. Practice first. If you don't like it though....it just peels off.
FWIW, I have heard guys with the mattte finish complain about dust collection and trying to clean it. Dust just blows off mine.

I just used the black pastidip in the spray can - and did like 4 light coats from at least 6 inches away, Im thinking the others did really heavy coats or didn't use plasti-dip.

Its REALLY easy - once you get everything out - the hard part is over ... if you mess it up (I did) ... just peel it off and spray it again! Its not like spray paint, and it seems to peel up very easily.

The difference in finishes is just a difference in how the product was applied.
To get a really good matte finish, you need to spray light coats about 6-12 inches away from what you are spraying. For even added texture spray short bursts from about 12-16in away until you get the build up and finish you desire.

Yeah, I hit my panels with this stuff too. They we all nicked and scratched from the years of use. Worked out well. Just looks like it should have came from the factory this way, not as obtrusive to the eye.

Remove the screws and then there are tabs on the bottom that hold the shift boot in place. Gently pull one of the tabs back until you can get the boot to pop up, then slide it out.

When I did my circuit breaker panel in the rally car, the heat inside of the car caused it to run a little bit. Not a ton, but where I drilled through the plastic (prior to applying the plasti-dip), it ran into a sort of drop shape below the circuit breakers, almost hanging off of the circuit breaker ring when it heated up.

So is there a way to get a matte finish that is smooth? I want a smooth "soft-touch" finish, but not shiny.
| 2:43AM | 05-15-2009 08:55 AM |
How smooth? If you put one or two coats on then let dry, come back and spray from far away. The partly-dry "mist" will matte down the first two coats, but leave a little bit of texture. You can do this with any spray paint, not just Dip It.
Or do the above technique with spray paint over Dip It, if you used the can.

Plasti-Dip FTW. It's way more matte than these pics look (thanks cell phone cam).
Scuff, Prep Wipe, Dry, 2 coats primer, Dry, 4 or 5 light coats of Plasti Dip gets you...

I just did my gauge pod, and it came out a little "hairy" (for lack of a better word). It seems just a little to rubbery to me (go figure huh). Did I put too much on? I did 4 light coats on the stock ATI pod. It does match SOOO much better now, just feels kinda weird, for all i know its supposed to be that way. For those that did the center consoles are they super rubbery as well? or smooth like plastic?
