im getting 2 rattles in my dash. the one that erks me the most is the one above the speedo. when i put my hand on the dash above the speedo, it stops. the other sounds like its coming from around the air bag. there is one in the back, but im pretty sure its the spare tire thing for the wagons. this is a GREAT thread by the way.

I used electrical tape around the latch and it worked great. I just need to add a little more to completely get rid of the rattle. Be sure not to use too much otherwise it will barely catch, and as soon as you hit a bump, it will drop hard onto the knees of the passenger....ask me how I know

Why is this not a damn sticky.
Anyways, I will be trying to fix some of these. I hope to find a fix for the divers side vent cover next to the A pillar... drives me nuts.
I also think I have a left rear strut mount going bad, unless its the rear seat? Its a random, and sometimes constant high pitch sqeak. Any ideas? Never heard a bad strut mount so I'm not sure.

A Pillar Squeak Fixed!

I finally fixed the A Pillar squeak that has been haunting me for 2 years!! I thought it was the vents at first, but after popping them out and lining the inside with felt it still squeaked.
I took off the A Pillars, as described in another post on here, lined the bottom that touches the dashboard in sticky-sided felt. I also put gaff tape along both long sides of the pillar cover. I discovered that the squeak was coming from the long side that touches the windshield.
This fixed it for me. I spent the week skiing and didn't have one squeak in the cold weather, driving over rough icy, snowy roads.
I would suggest skipping the vents and work on the a pillar first.

Going to ask a dumb question but is it safe to remove the a-pillar? I'm asking because on the newer models they have side curtain air bags.

One rattle on my GR that took me way too long to find was actually on the outside of the car; the piece of plastic at the bottom of the windshield the wiper arms come through. I think it's supposed to sit flush against the glass, but I had a gap right in the middle of the car. Took some silicone to it and made a nice little seal.
Only reason I found this one was watching Top Gear with my girlfriend...in particular the episode where Jeremy Clarkson races the other two presenters in a Ferrari 612 up to Switzerland with the noisy rattle coming from the wiper arms. In fact, I didn't even think about it applying to my car...she did...

It may be the plastic piece that holds down the fabric on the rear seat. Remove that cargo cover and with a flat head driver, pop put those black clips that hold the excess seat fabric. Once you do, you will see a large plastic piece that is not supported well, and causes rattle. That took a lot of rattle out.

They aren't in the plastic piece that comes off. Pop the tab that says SRS on it off, take the screw out that is holding it in and the pillar piece pops out. The airbag parts are attached to the A pillar itself.

I have a 2012 4 door WRX and since the day I bought it I have had a very annoying rattle that I have narrowed down to coming from the interior trunk little. It happens on a cold start idle and it happens when under heavy load at low RPMS. It sounds like a buzzing. Subaru lined the trunk lid (interior) with insulator between the plastic and the metal frame and it is still there. Anybody experience this or have a solution to this?? It is driving me NUTS!!

Another option for the glove box rattle - These can be picked up at Radio Shack.

They are little rubber feet with adhesive - they keep tension on the glove box when closed to keep it from rattling. You may have to trim them if it's too tight.

Did you look at the wiring? Mine had the same issue and I just ziptied/taped the wire to the door. Rattle gone.
Also, the metal bracket that holds the window/lock switches will sometimes "bounce" around and rattle

Let you tell me about my creaking rear end.

So I was gently tapped from behind this winter while at a light, nothing major, didn't even bother fixing the damage, just spidering of paint on the rear bumper. Nothing came loose, bumper still attached fine on both sides fine.
But now whenever I take a turn for example into my driveway (at slow speeds and sometimes at a slight incline), something back there is creaking/rubbing/shifting. I have pinpointed it somewhere between the rear bench seat and the hatch glass. And it definitely sounds that it's coming from inside the car, not out.
I cannot figure out what is making the noise. I took off the rear strut bar and tightened it back up and it's still there.
I made sure all the interior trim pieces are attached with no broken clips and it's still there.
The actual hatch is adjusted properly with the rubber stoppers, and if you go to shift it sideways when lifted opened, it's not making the creaking noise.
Or is it not accident-related and a sign of something else loose or my struts going?
Did I mention I'm very OCD when it comes to these types of rattles inside the cabin? :furious:
Does it do it with the seat folded down?
I've had the right passenger rear seat rattle too, I would say started right around the same time but I've eliminated it. What rattled was something around the locking mechanism. I stuck a few felt furniture pads around the latch area on the seat back which made it go away when the seats were upright. But then the knob to pull down the seats rattled sometimes too. Wrapped a piece of mastic tape around the knob (which you can unscrew completely) and that rattle went away too which was the plastic knob hitting the metal cutout ring on the seat.
And what I have now is more of a creaking/shifting noise that I want to say is coming from the back end, definitely the hatch to the the strut bar area, nothing farther.
After fixing the seats, I've driven around with them down and it's there.

I installed an all new shifter upgrade about a week ago. Front stay, rear stay, pivot bushings, short throw shifter, and linkage update. Now when i let off the gas around 4000 rpm I get a rattle from what sounds like the tammy. Could I maybe have just not tightened something properly? It wasnt doing this before installation so I know it's one of the bushings or linkage update. Anybody ever had a similar issue?

I didn't search too well, but in my 06 when going up to around 4500-5000+RPM in 1st gear only, and letting off the gas completely and engine braking, instead of going to second, I get a WICKED vibration sound coming from the rear left inside somewhere. Kind of sounds like the metal part of the seat belt, but it doesn't make sense that it would only make noise in first gear?

It could be possible that a stiffer Bushings is causing more emitted noise.

It's definitely not just an increase in a previous noise it's new. Like a clunking from the tranny itself. I'm installing a new tranny mount/cross member bushings soon I guess I'll take a look then

I'm going insane trying to find a squeak that seems to be coming from inside of hatchback area (2011 five-door WRX) when I'm going over bumps. It just started, at about 5,000 miles. It sounds like styrofoam or rubber rubbing. And it's pretty bad. :furious: Searching here and elsewhere has not helped.
I have removed the roll-up cargo cover, OEM accessory rubber trunk liner, spare tire storage area cover, spare tire jack holder styrofoam insert, trunk lid interior trim pieces and the spare tire. None of those helped.
I also put some padding under the plastic piece that holds the lower edge of the fabric covering the rear seat backs. No help.
I have pushed and pulled on the interior trim pieces, but they seem quiet.
All that I can think of now are the styrofoam tool holders to either side of the spare, but I can't figure out how to remove them without damaging the plastic pins holding them in place. However, bracing them in place does not seem to help.
Any other ideas? My next plan to is to ride around in the back and press on things while my wife drives the car. Oh, and back out the rubber trunk lid bumper / stops a hair.
Thanks!

ah a thread from kindred spirits...
i haven't found any responses on the 2012 Impreza forum, but maybe someone here can at least advise?
i have an intermittent rattle come from the steering column area. i can make the rattle go away if i pinch the "knee airbag" panel and the one above it together.
i'm a little scared about trying to open it all up since there is the airbag in there.
it's a mixed blessing, but the sound goes away once the car has been in the sun for 30-60 minutes presumably because the sun has warmed something to expand enough so there is not play in the panel that is rattling.
it's good that it isn't there all the time, but i think that makes it almost impossible to bring to the dealer unless i left the car overnight. even then, there would be no guarantee that they could find/fix it.

Most vent covers I've worked on do just pry out. They typically have little tabs that need to be pressed inward slightly, if you can reach them; otherwise, you just close your eyes and pray while prying gently. There are gentle plastic pry tools on Amazon that can be very helpful without marring the finish.

Going to try to find some rubber spacers or something to see if I can get it to stop. If not I'll probably end up ripping it off. Anybody else have the same issue? Might have been mentioned but I haven't read all 31 pages

I fixed the most annoying rattle on my '02 WRX this weekend. It was on both ends of the vent cover (long piece of plastic that runs along the base of the windshield). Pressing down on either end makes the rattle go away. Very loud, very obnoxious, and ever since I stiffened my suspension and replaced several bushings and mounts infinitely worse.
To fix it:
1) Pull out the vent cover. I used my fingers to lift it slightly, then used an upholstery clip tool to get into the exposed crack and pry it up. It takes almost no pressure at all to pop it up. 2) Remove all of the little white clips on the vent cover. Just pry the base of the white clip apart and it will come off pretty easily.
3) Cover each of the plastic tips that the clips were sitting on with silicone, then place the white clips back on over the silicone. Be sure to do this immediately, don't wait for the silicone to dry. (http://contentinfo.autozone.com/znetcs/product-info/en/US/ptx/81158/image/4/)
4) Re-install the vent cover. Be careful not to get silicone on the car, it can be annoying to get off some material and will ruin cloth entirely I think.
I also used a fix from earlier in the thread to fix the glove box. I bought some rubber adhesive feet from radio shack and stuck one on either side of the glove box, doesn't wiggle at all, no rattles. great.
Now if I could only figure out how to fix the plastic steering column cover. it rattles really bad. touching it makes it stop, but I can't find any loose screws.

Very annoying rattle from passenger side dash board in 09 impreza, I cant isolate it at all! It's not the drop out cubby for sure since I took that out and drove around. Happens all the time. Idle, crusing, and accelerating.

I fixed this. Simply take off the top portion of the steering column cover and you will see a flat white plastic piece axtending across the column, it'll be decently sized. All I did was place duct tape on top of it to act as a barrier between it and the plastic column cover you removed. What happens is that the black cover slightly vibrates against this plastic piece as you drive. I havn't had any rattles from this since.

Anyone hear creaking coming from their hatch? Mine was doing it before and after springs and rear sway, so I don't believe its related to those. I tried adjusting the rubber bumpers, but no luck. Its mainly when driving around parking lots and low speed turning.

Maybe stiffer springs causing more noticable creaking...?
Im noticing this on stock springs too though on my 2.5i

How do you get the top plastic piece off? I found the 1 screw that held the bottom piece on, then I found another screw inside that on the bottom that was half out. I tightened that up and *most* of the rattles went away.
I tried to get the top cover off to look for anything else that could rattle but I couldn't get it off for the life of me.

From what I remember, I think there were some screws holding it on that you find when you take off the bottom piece. I can double check when I get home this afternoon.

Anyone have any luck with the plastic door piece which attached to the door cupholder underneath the driverside arm rest? Sometimes I push the plastic piece in with my hand to get rid of the sound so I know its that plastic bit.
YES!!!! It will rattle, I will touch it with my hand, it stops for 2 minutes and for it again! Very annoying!
On mine the mirror itself actually separated the slightest bit, causing the rattle. I just glued it together.

I got a 2012 WRX and when i hit bumps i hear my exhaust rattle/clang (all stock). On bumpy roads, i feel like i'm driving an old Civic.
Passenger side upper door cover area (right underneath glass closer to the B-pillar) i hear an annoying rattle as well coming from inside the door card.
