SICK! Did you order the black centers from Flatirons? They look like they match perfectly. Fahrenheit temperature dial FTW.
DC16A2 09-05-2009 02:50 AM

My friend has Plastidip applied on the exterior (headlight bezels, hood scoop, chrome window trim, door handles, and wipers) of a Mini Cooper S. Still holding up after a month. So i think it's safe to assume that normal interior use won't screw it up.
Evilchargerfan 09-05-2009 03:22 AM

^^^ pics of your FRIENDS car?

sheepdog, these are overlays. i couldnt afford the $100+ price tag of the "real" ones :sadbanana:

Nice. Yea that vinyl and fabric dye is the only thing I've found that will stick to visors (my vinyl GC ones at least), although when I tried to flock over it, it made a gooey mess. Not sure if it was the vinyl + fabric dye (which had dried and been installed for months) or the vinyl itself, but I think it was the vinyl.

Smoke 10-26-2009 07:30 PM

Has anyone ever used a clear coat or anything to protect their plasti dip?

I have a lot of pieces painted and want to keep it lasting.
Evilchargerfan 10-26-2009 07:32 PM

if u want something more durable ... try using dupli color bumper paint/coating

plasti dip will last as long as you dont touch it ... but unfortunately it comes off real easy
sheepdog 10-26-2009 10:31 PM

It doesn't come off if you prep correctly... mine hasn't scratched in 2 years, even on the actual dials of my hvac knobs.
g00dhum0r 10-27-2009 11:49 PM

so what about plasti dip on the silver part of the 04 STI steering wheel? or would you recommend black vinyl spray dye?
sheepdog 10-28-2009 02:24 PM
so what about plasti dip on the silver part of the 04 STI steering wheel? or would you recommend black vinyl spray dye?
There are pictures of this very thing in this very thread.
fishawrx 10-28-2009 06:27 PM

If you're talking about the trim pieces on the bottom of the door well I'd say it's a bad idea. Plasti-dip doesn't hold up well when you apply pressure across the surface of a plasti-dipped surface. I attempted to plasti-dip my steering wheel b/c it was all faded and worn out. It immediately started peeling once I tried to steer w/ one hand, which required that I turn the wheel under my palm. twisted the plasti-dip right off in that spot. If you plasti-dip an area that would get kicked, it'd probably peel/tear.

honestly i went through every page maybe i missed it but..when someone else asked, they were referred to another thread where the guy used a dye instead...i want to do it i just don't know how to get the center piece (airbag) off the steering wheel ... btw i'm not referring to the whole wheel..just the silver part on the STI wheel..

sheepdog 10-29-2009 12:54 AM

Hmm, maybe it was another plasti-dip thead, or the picture link has broken. It has been done though, and yes, plasti-dip would work. Just prep it like you would anywhere else, and peel the masking tape when it's still tacky, otherwise the plasti-dip can stick to itself over the tape.
rshewmake04 10-29-2009 11:00 AM

Plasti dip is amazing I have a friend that plastidiped his wheels on his 09 gti and it turned out really well after a couple months it's still holding up
Smoke 10-29-2009 01:21 PM

My door cards and glove boxes and such are still holding up.

I might have to show some pictures if people are interested.
jpdeville 10-29-2009 09:06 PM

how long will that **** last im thinking if using it on my custom grill
2point0 10-30-2009 01:04 AM

for a grille, I would use something like flat black BBQ grill paint. it will hold up much better to the elements.
Smoke 10-30-2009 01:21 AM
how long will that **** last im thinking if using it on my custom grill
Don't use plasti-dip, use real paint.

I used this and it's extremely durable, but I'd have to reapply now, after a year:

I used semi flat enamel.
92xdahonda 10-30-2009 06:53 AM

it looks good....i'm gonna give this a try. Thanks
Has anyone ever used a clear coat or anything to protect their plasti dip?

yep ive tried it. I did it on a set of old rota center caps that I debadged... regular paint clearcoat does not like rubber as I thought. The clear instantly turned this milky color when it hit the rubber. It couldve just been my clear though

Plasti-dip actually comes in a clear option as well. I bet it would adhere over any color plasti-dip, but its not a 'clear coat' in the traditional sense. I imagine it would be the equivalent of putting a matte clear coat on a normal paint job... anyone used this?

Btw... for everyone complaining about scratching this stuff...

I found out about this from a friend of mine who came across it on one of his bimmer forums.

Except Plasti-dip got popular there from everyone using it to paint EXTERIOR pieces, especially the two front kidney grills and the fender grills on m3/m5. They loved it because it gave the low-profile matte look, but was rubber which did not chip/peel/scratch. He did his and it looked great and stayed that way.

The first time I used it, I painted the chipping metal mesh in my liberal replica grill. It has not chipped, ripped, torn, faded etc for 25k+ miles

You must prep at least decently (clean surface completely, maybe a light scuff), but the key is a bunch of thin layers, a bunch. I mean you need to use a lot of this stuff, but do not get lazy and do 2 thick coats...

Ive painted a bunch of different parts with this stuff from metal (a grill, an intake, two hella horn cages, and two catbacks soon to be 3 with the wife's stromung:D) to plastic (interior trim) to faded gel coat over carbon fiber (hoodscoop and crappy ebay knockoff jdm sidemarkers). I have painted them in different ways and the finished product shows it. The most durable, hardest ones ive done though were a lot of thin coats, with a lot of paint total. Hope this helps a little for those interested
2point0 02-05-2010 12:51 PM

^Interesting. For the multiple thin coats, how long are you waiting in between? It seems every time I did another coat, it got chunkier.
Kupkake 02-05-2010 04:05 PM

I just did my dash maybe a week or 2 ago, I love it. Looks soo much cleaner, Just got my JDM Haz button installed and my interior lights finished off by Cory over at Interior Flair.

Should have pics up soon, if the snow hold out that is!

You should wait about a half hour on a nice warm day.

I can officially say my ricer spray painted interior held up beautifully during the winter.

hehe, I did mine in my garage in December. Been holding up very well, especially seeing as I removed the dash panels prob another 3-4 times since its been painted

For those of you concerned about it peeling off plastidip makes an acrylic primer, apparently it increases adhesion by 400%...and i can pretty much vouch for that...here are a couple handles I did for a machine I'm building.
there where areas i had to trim, and where there was the primer i basically had to pull it off with pliers.

2point0 02-05-2010 05:30 PM

Will the adhesion promoter help with items like the sun visor clips? Looking at Evilchargerfan's pics, it seems like pushing the visors in scraped the plasti-dip off. Hard to tell from the pics, though.

Thank you that's very helpful. And 400%?!

Yes, it will, mine are still holding because I hardly touch them. Adhesion promotor is definitely a must.

i just plati dipped my killer b shift knob.now its perfect.wont get hot and i can grip it really well

does lowes, home depot or OSH stock/carry the primer?
2point0 02-05-2010 09:49 PM

Better yet, will any adhesion promoter work (like you can get @ Autozone for automotive plastics) or is there something special about the plasti-dip one?
RexGF8 02-06-2010 09:04 AM

Anyone knows company that ships Plasti-dip internationally? Can't find one. :(

On the can of the platidip primer thats there claim.
On bare metal it peels off pretty easy.
But once primered its almost permanent.
does lowes, home depot or OSH stock/carry the primer?
I'm not sure about that
Better yet, will any adhesion promoter work (like you can get @ Autozone for automotive plastics) or is there something special about the plasti-dip one?
I dont think any regular adhesion pro will work since the plastidip one is acrylic.

I got my dip and primer from mcmaster-carr
Austin2334 02-08-2010 11:26 AM

Very interesting
05EJ25 02-21-2010 03:12 PM

I sanded the parts with 150 grit, washed in soapy water, then primed with a rustoleum auto flat black primer, sanded with 220 very lightly and washed again. Let it dry and two coats of plasti dip. the picture doesn't do it justice. too sunny out.

TXwrxWagon 02-21-2010 04:16 PM

/Northern Tool carries the black spray cans as well... I will be over there later this week, I will see if they carry the ad-promot. They don't show Plasti-Dip on their website.
mother of god.....you sanded plastic with 150grit!?
Um yeah and it really only takes the original silver off. 150 is not that harsh. you sound like I said 80 grit or something.
eurospek 03-05-2010 05:30 PM

To those that didn't send down your surface before, can I always go back to the original look? I plan on painting my chrome and rock pitted grille surrounds but afraid I won't like the look. Can I just spray it on the clean pieces without sanding down the chrome and peel away the plasti-dip as I see fit?
2point0 03-05-2010 07:53 PM

I have sprayed a few metal items w/out sanding and it usually peels off before I want it to.
eurospek 03-05-2010 07:56 PM

Not really 'metal' per say. This is what I wish to plasti-dip.

I plasti-dipped my entire interior and when it comes time for a wash I use armor all cleaning wipes just dont press down to hard or it will leave residue on the black. No point in trying to make it shiny it will not work.
txl146 03-22-2010 12:39 AM

Have anyone used Plasti-dip on exterior parts like suspension and moving parts? Wonder how they will withstand if their special primer is used.
Smoke 03-22-2010 12:43 AM

I used armor all to clean.

My entire interior is plasti-dip. After a while it loses its rubbery feel and becomes more smooth.

As for using plasti-dip for exterior, I don't think that's a good idea. It's still rubbery and dust will attach to it and it will look gritty and really bad.

There's this paint that my dad uses for frame pieces and it comes in a can from auto body places. You just brush it on and it's permanent (no prepping needed, except cleaning).
txl146 03-22-2010 12:47 AM

Da-Risin-Smoke, can you please get more detail about that paint?

I am looking for a paint to repair the damage on Prodrive spring:

POR 15 for the springs
txl146 03-22-2010 01:00 AM

Looks like POR 15 will be the perfect paint to use on springs.

Any idea where I can pick them up? Doesn't look like either Lowes or HD carry them.

i really dont see any reason at all to use plasti dip....................why is everyone so obsessed with this crap!? just use flat black spray paint or under coating if you want the texture. i honestly dont see the allur of this stuff.
Madtinter 03-22-2010 06:58 AM

I use rust oleum textured black, it leaves the parts looking as if they came black from factory(nice clean look), washed my car a few times and no problems either.
bwrx03 03-22-2010 01:43 PM

I am doing my interior and i did the seat belt rings like Koji did but the seat belt just pulls the paint right off. Would rhino liner work any better? Would it even be a possibility?

POR 15 doesnt come out textured like this plastidip garbage. its a very very thick self leveling paint that will kill rust.
