plasti-dip part 3

t3hWIT 03-24-2007 01:19 AM

Oh, **** dude I almost forgot. I stopped at Jo Ann fabrics today and they didn't have the black microsuede in stock. I did happen to still have my receipt in my wallet since my last purchase in the beginning of October... as per suggestion...

They said any Jo Ann fabric place could order it. The Style number is "8357055" and it is simply called "Black Solid Microsue" It cost me $9.09 a yard. If your local JA stil refuses to order it, tell the tools to shove it and I can get it for you.
sheepdog 03-24-2007 01:49 AM

Lol thanks man. I'll actually be in Atlanta this week, so I'm going to see if I can score some at a Joannes there. It's nice to have the style number though, my Joanne's didn't even have an empty bolt of it or anything. PM me your address and I'll send you those door handles when I get home if you want.

Are you spraying the cards with PD? Or are you talking about when you painted them originally?

Lastly, I just noticed you're from Williamsport. I know a few legacy people from there through SLi. Only one I can recall off the top of my head is Jess, with the green 1st gen legacy.
whiskeytech 03-24-2007 12:58 PM

Ok I think I might be retarded. I actually think I didn't put thick enough coats on. I sprayed the parts 2 days ago and I put them in this morning. Now I have to take out the shifter trim cuz I already scratched it when I was putting it back in. It says on the can to spray heavy enough to make a uniform wet-looking coat. I forgot it said that and sprayed it like I do regular spray paint. Anybody else have similar problems yet?

Yeah, I know Jess. Spencer is on SLi as well (I believe as Strat). I'll take the door handles if you are looking to get rid of them, otherwise that's cool. It was nothing for me to stop at Joannes, it was on my way to work anyways.

My lower dashboard is sitting on the balcony outside, waiting for a fourth coat of paint. It looks good, so I think I'm going to spray all my stock door pieces, as well as any other trim.

Now that I go back and look at the How-To (that forgot that I wrote ), I see that I used Krylon Fusion (for plastics) satin black paint on the door panels. I think I sprayed it too thick and it turned out glossy. Unless someone in PA wants to trade door panels ;) I'll be taking off the suede and repainting the panels again with Plastidip. I won't be able to do that today, but it should be before our car show on the 21st of April.

Hmm.... did you wash them really good before spraying? I did pretty thin coats when I was doing the inside of my console to make sure I didn't get runs, so I doubt that has anything to do with it. Maybe try a light grit sandpaper as well. As I said before, with sanding and a good wash, I haven't been able to scratch mine even with a flat tip screwdriver unless I push hard enough to actually gouge the plastic itself, so that's interesting.

MCL, I'll send you the doorhandles when I get back to Boulder, I'll never use them so you might as well have them. I'm going to try to have my interior done by the car show here at CU on April 14th, so I'll let you know if the Rit dye works on that suede.

Great. If it does, I'll have to look into that for my door panels, and I may wrap my headliner as well. :) PMing...

Nah man, it's holdin up pretty well so far.
Yeah I lightly sanded with about 800 grit, it was all that I had on hand. Then I washed it down with some alcohol and let it dry. Some parts are holding up very well, but the parts near the edges don't seem as strong. I'll give it another go on Monday.
t3hWIT 03-25-2007 05:47 PM

I hope this **** holds up. I'm a bit anxious about all this... today I completely gutted my interior with the exception of the dashboard... which is coming out tomorrow. Headliner and upper A, B, and C pillar covers are all under paint.
sheepdog 03-25-2007 06:46 PM

I used Dawn dish soap to wash my pieces in the sink, and 220 grit sandpaper. Could you have somehow missed a spot with the alcohol?

MCL, pictures please ;)
t3hWIT 03-25-2007 09:31 PM

Keep in mind, both the crappy lighting, the age of the borrowed digital camera, and the fact that the last coat was put on only an hour and a half ago and is still slightly tacky...

The paint lines arent anywhere near as noticiable as the picture makes them look, but its still drying too. The lighter areas you see are actually reflections, and not the tan showing through. If it looks bad in the daylight, I'll put another thick coat on going in the opposite direction.

And what I have left to do... dashboard not shown:

I'm spraying the rear deck with Dublicolor's fabric paint, but that's it.
sheepdog 03-25-2007 09:38 PM

Sweet! It's pretty easy to recover that rear deck, I did mine in black canvas. That might be a better option than spraying it.

Also, don't forget to move the switch halfway through your coats on the dome light thing, I made that mistake when I sprayed it and had to go back and do it haha.
t3hWIT 03-25-2007 09:41 PM

What exactly would you suggest (pictures if possible please :)) that wouldn't look cheesy? I think I have some microsuede left, but I dont know if it would look right for the rear deck.

If I have to buy fabric, I'm going to spray the decklid for now and wrap it at a later date. I was really unrealistic when I budgeted $20 for this. I already used that much, and I'm looking at another $20-25. I can't afford to really do anything else (other than paint) until I sell more car parts.
t3hWIT 03-25-2007 10:05 PM

Just a caution to anyone... these fumes are obknoxious. I would bet that if I light a match, I'm a goner. :sadmonkey:

Thats black canvas with dark grey speaker cover fabric, both from good old Joanne's. Sprayed the plastic pieces with textured paint for plastics, but will probably be redoing them with PD once I get back in town. I also need to reglue the canvas, as the crappy glue I used is starting to fail.

Oh, and btw I scored some of the black microsuede at a Joanne's here.... on clearance!!! 7 bucks a yard baby. However, they only had 3.5 yards, I'm not sure it's enough for what I need. I'm going to check a couple other JA's around here this week when I get a chance. They also told me it's a winter only item, so they can't order it.

Clearance? Thats not good a good sign... I was told by my local JAF that their warehouse has it. Glad to hear you got it though.

Thanks for the pictures, and it does look really good (OEM). I'll see what I can come up with to replicate your setup.
mtwilson81 03-26-2007 03:19 AM

im hooked too im gonna do everything minus the dash too. I bet plasti dip sales has increased in the last week all over the place just from this thread. maybe prices will go down, wishful thinking i guess. $6.25 everywhere. cool product though
Gatchaman 03-26-2007 05:34 AM

I am soooo glad I found this thread before I painted my dash with just the normal plastic paint. Thank you!

Mcguckins charges a bit more for it. You should join the CUSCC if you're in Boulder, even if you're not actually a student lol. We meet thursdays in the 29th street underground garage. (not this next one though due to spring break)
KellyG6 03-26-2007 10:26 AM

Colors
It comes in 6 different colors. Red, Blue, Yellow, White, Clear and Black. You can also mix colors and tint the white or clear with a paint tint. Such as an enamel based paint tint or solvent based paint tint.
he is talking about spraying the actual metal rims, not the tires... what colors does it come in anyways?
damn i was gonna do the headliner too... did you spray the plasti-dip over the factory cloth on the headliner or what? does it crack or anything or does it flex with the fabric? the dash is still holding up good and it still looks great
sheepdog 03-26-2007 02:30 PM

The headliner in our Ls is covered in a vinyl, so he sprayed that. Good to hear about the dash.... I'm getting tempted to do mine as well. How hard is it to pull the dash cover off?
t3hWIT 03-26-2007 04:04 PM

Does anyone know how to remove the speedometer on the 93-97 clusters? I'm going to try to pull my dashboard before it gets dark.
skate enjoi 03-26-2007 05:19 PM

my dash had a bolt on each side that you would have to open the door to get off, a couple where the center console goes, 3 on top by the windshield, and then the airbag had 3 bolts holding it down... im pretty sure that was about it... it was a lot easier than i thought it would be
sheepdog 03-26-2007 06:34 PM

Hmm, I might need to do my dash as well then. JDM black ftw!
vwown3d 03-26-2007 06:43 PM

can someone post a pic of the can of this stuff?

thanks!

Yea, I learned my lesson the first time haha. I'll use a really light grit paper this time around.

Thanks dude, but the main problem is that the 93-97 dashboards have a mechanical speedometer, as opposed to the simple electronic ones on the later models. Ryan (ryno50485) knew how to remove it... he just pulled on the cable.

Big thanks to ryno50485 for helping me kick my dashboards ass. I'm trying to remove the airbag right now, and I'll have it prepped for paint by tomorrow. :D Ill have pics when its all done. I'm working around the weather, my classes, and various projects. Hopefully I'll have it done by this weekend or I'll be driving down to Altoona with my gauges duct taped to the impact beam.
sheepdog 03-26-2007 08:21 PM

Lol. I think his comment might have been for me, I have the same dash as him.

I can't wait to see the reincarnation of your interior!
t3hWIT 03-26-2007 09:08 PM
Lol. I think his comment might have been for me, I have the same dash as him.

Yeah, probably now that I read it. He didnt quote, so I wasnt sure. It says you have a MY93 Impreza... did you do a dash conversion? I'll have some pics of my current interior setup soon.

I wont have my full interior together probably until next week because I still need to paint the door trim pieces, and I'm debating tinting my rear windscreen while I have the trim out.

The door panels are staying the way they are for the moment, because I don't to get way in over my head.
whiskeytech 03-26-2007 09:39 PM

OK I found out why I thought that the coats weren't thick enough. Well I just
bought a house and there are a lot of projects my wife and I are doing right
now. I deduced that after I finished my last coat, she snuck out into the
garage and put a coat of spray paint on some of our interior doors. She sprayed
so much that there is now a fine coat of white overspray on everything in the
garage.

To include my dash parts.

Looks like one or two more coats is in order.
t3hWIT 03-26-2007 10:02 PM

That sucks dude.

What do you guys think. Should I wrap my passenger side airbag in microsuede, or just paint it like the rest of the dash? I don't think the fabric would interfere with the airbag operation. I'm not sure if a suede wrapped airbag would be a nice accent or be a bit too much.
skate enjoi 03-26-2007 10:13 PM

i would wrap it, and take it off if it doesnt flow or looks bad... fabric will be a lot easier to take off than the plasti-dip
skate enjoi 03-26-2007 10:14 PM

or i can get you a picture of what my painted dash and painted airbag looks like tomorrow?
t3hWIT 03-26-2007 10:25 PM

I guess I could do that, but I need to know for sure before I put the dashboard in. Removing the airbag was a PITA with the dashboard out, and I can't imagine what it would be like with the dash in the vehicle. I might not have a picture until wednesday, as I have to get enough coats on. I should have enough time for 5 coats between classes. Currently wrapped: center console lid, all door panel inserts, glovebox cover, and rear speaker covers (just finished a few minutes ago). I was going to wrap the pillar trim from the bottom of the windows up to the ceiling, but I may wait until I get the $$ for a CF gauge cup to move my EGT from the pillar to the steering column.

In case I didnt state it earlier, I need to have my dashboard in by sunset on Thursday, which might mean skipping my evening class.

I appologize to sheepdog if I seem to be hijacking your thread. I'd like input on some things, as well as update, but I don't feel the need to create another thread on the subject.
sheepdog 03-27-2007 01:21 AM

I don't care man, sometimes this thread is just a conversation between the two of us

I do indeed have a dash swap, from an 05wrx. I also have my passenger airbag cover covered in suede, because the airbags in the donor car were blown and the covers looked awful.

Here's a couple pictures, the best I have on hand, they're kind of old. You get the idea though.
where are you guys getting this ultrasuede from? i cant find it anywhere
Jo-Anne Fabrics. The style number (synthetic microsuede) is 8357055.

If you can''t get it locally, I can see about getting it from my local JAF and you can just send the Paypal for it. My local JAF said they could get it for me, but Sheepdog's JAF said it's seasonal, so I would have to check to make absolutely sure.
That's pretty sweet dude. I'm hoping to do the same for a summer project, but I'm not sure about it yet.

It's supposed to be partly sunny and 75* today in north central PA. Looks like I should have my dashboard done with paint (assuming that I was able to remove the ArmorAll residue), so hopefully I won't have to be driving around with my current dash setup.

sheepdog 03-27-2007 09:39 AM

sweet! I'd think any dish soap would take the armorall right off. I didn't do the dash swap myself, ECS did it, so good luck with that haha.

In terms of the microsuede, try fabric.com. They carry it year round, however theyre next shipment of black comes in end of april, which is too late for when I need to have mine done by. They also carry sapphire, which is supposed to be really close to the STi blue.
skate enjoi 03-27-2007 11:13 AM

yeah i originally started at fabric dot com and covered a bunch of stuff in red microsuede--headliner, pillars, door panels, some other stuff... i also ordered a sample of the sapphire and it is almost an exact match to my sti door cards... the only problem is the fabric does not stretch AT ALL... hard to work with, thats why i was looking for other microsuede
Poekin 03-27-2007 12:00 PM

wouldnt rubbing alcohol do the trick to take the armorall off?

Also, how easy was it to get that ultrasuede on? How does it work, im pretty unfamiliar with it.
skate enjoi 03-27-2007 12:15 PM

the ultrasuede is a material that comes in sheets.. you cut it to fit, then basically glue it and fit it to whatever you want...
Poekin 03-27-2007 12:21 PM

any special kind of glue?
sheepdog 03-27-2007 03:52 PM

I'd use headliner spray. Joanne's has a blue that is pretty close to hte STi blue and their microsuede stretches a bit.
mtwilson81 03-27-2007 04:39 PM

hey sheepdog, is CUSCC CU Sport Compact Club? Is the 29th st. garage in the old mall location by home depot? What time thursdays, i might come check it out. i dont really knmow anyone else who has a subaru, (at least that does anything to it.) Might be cool to get some ideas and show off some stuff at the same time. holler back. PS Quit buying up all my local microsuede. ya bastid JK:devil:

the dash looks great!
Cusson 03-29-2007 05:02 PM

what is the best way to apply plasti-dip so you get the least amount of streaks? just do multiple coats? how far are you guys spraying it from the dash trim, about 12 inches? ill be doing mine this weekend. :)
