plasti-dip part 4

sheepdog 03-30-2007 01:59 AM

I did about 6-8 inches away, doing multiple coats in varying directions
Gatchaman 03-30-2007 02:46 AM

I rubbed down all the parts I did, (steering wheel, dash, vents) with paint thinner before painting them. This will take off any cleaning products that might still be on there, aka Armer All. Everything came out Awsome!
ekw 03-30-2007 08:10 AM

go light on paint thinner.
I can tell you from experience that it will soften some plastics.

a quick pass w/ a cloth would probably be ok, but don't get carried away.
t3hWIT 03-30-2007 12:13 PM

To get rid of streaks in my dashboard, I just randomly sprayed it in quick strokes. It got rid of the streaks, but it's not textured as the paint apparently dried a bit in the air before it hit the dash.

It's not too bad, but you can feel it, and it catches lint from the Meguiars interior wipes. I'll take some pictures this weekend, as everything is back in except for the A-pillar (I need new tabs for the pillar pod).
Cusson 03-30-2007 02:22 PM

i was planning on sanding with really fine sandpaper then applying the plasti dip. how many coats average are you guys doing? like 5 or 6?
AcquaCow 03-30-2007 02:32 PM

What you all need to do is find a good spray etcher and then wipe down with mineral spirits.

Then spray them down with plasti-dip.

That would yield great adhesion on just about anything.

sheepdog 03-30-2007 02:44 PM

I did around 6-8 coats on everything. I didn't use paint thinner, or anything, just a degreasing dish soap.

And you did your steering wheel?? Pictures!
t3hWIT 03-31-2007 01:23 AM

I'll take some pictures tomorrow... later today of the results on the interior.

It's not pefect, but its better than the previous half black/half tan
couchflambeau 03-31-2007 05:27 PM

Interesting... actually doesn't look half bad from the pictures.

Hope it holds up....
sheepdog 03-31-2007 08:21 PM

Yea man, that dash looks almost oem. I'm doing my doorcards here soon.
silverwrx666 03-31-2007 08:28 PM

anybody have any pics of wheels painted with this stuff
Gatchaman 04-01-2007 02:41 AM

Ya, did the steering wheel. Have an '04 STI and wanted to get rid of the silver. It looks great! Never posted pics before but is something I am looking into.
sheepdog 04-02-2007 02:00 AM

please do!
100_Percent_Juice 04-12-2007 07:45 PM

I am buying a few cans of this right now. Those dash jobs look awesome.
IllNastyImpreza 04-12-2007 08:42 PM
I don't care man, sometimes this thread is just a conversation between the two of us

I do indeed have a dash swap, from an 05wrx. I also have my passenger airbag cover covered in suede, because the airbags in the donor car were blown and the covers looked awful.

Here's a couple pictures, the best I have on hand, they're kind of old. You get the idea though.

Oh noes! At least you figured out what went wrong though.
wow thats an AWESOME interior swap... are those 2.5rs door pannels?

ok so as far as this spray on "rubery" stuff goes.... how is it holding up?
skate enjoi 04-12-2007 09:43 PM

hey i just got some black microsuede from jo-anne but they didnt have enough for me to do my headliner.... can anyone else see if they have any at their jo-anne?
scottjua 04-16-2007 02:25 AM

bump for more dipped dashes
un_focused 04-16-2007 02:31 AM

This stuff looks like fun.

They are. The interior has been cleaned up a lot more since then, I'll post a couple pictures that show some plasti-dipped stuff. It holds up great.

edit: This is the best new one I have so far. You can kinda see the plasti-dipped door sill on the drivers side, and the knobs on the hvac.

Looks nice!

I'll be next to do my center console...

-- Dave
Matt_H 04-23-2007 12:18 AM

Gauge pod is next. I was going to do it, but as soon as I took the dash out, I completely forgot about the pod. :(
t3hWIT 04-23-2007 12:24 AM

I have to respray my e-brake handle. I drug my backpack across it putting it on the passenger seat and it peeled off paint. :(
E-Wrex 04-23-2007 12:40 AM

Got a can of this stuff at home depot. Just waiting until I have several hours to take the sanding and multiple coat plunge. It'll probably happen next weekend.
arco 04-24-2007 04:22 PM

anyone with 02-04 interior do this to their centers?
arco 04-24-2007 04:37 PM

woops. i forgot i saw one on the first page. i've seen only black so far but some of the pictures look gray. is there a gray color for plasti dip?
subiLOVR03 04-24-2007 04:48 PM

sounds awesome i might do some of my interior with this stuff if so ill let u know how it comes out
sheepdog 04-24-2007 06:07 PM

No grey color, just the lighting in the pictures.
scottjua 04-24-2007 08:34 PM

any nice macro or daytime shots of this stuff??? I can't find anything but RED around here...
sheepdog 04-24-2007 09:30 PM

Order it online, I found it plenty of places. Even Lowes or Home Depot doesn't have it? Thats odd.
Eric310 04-25-2007 03:52 AM

yeah I want to see some close up of this stuff? How does it feel? I want the black trim but am debating on this or ordering the s204 trim for waaaaaay more but its a really nice flat black.

also want to know how does it feel? does it feel rubbery or like any old flat black?
Matt_H 04-25-2007 09:44 AM

It's not smooth, but it's not rough. I'll get some daylight pictures today...

stripperluva 04-25-2007 10:25 AM

I had played around with the spray in truck bed liner, as plati-dip spray is hard to find around me.

I had used it in my jeep and with a well prepared surface it was tough as hell. The bed liner gave me a really fine (almost sand like) pebble texture that was not bad at all.

I found 4 cans of black pasti-dip and will compare it to the bed coating.
scottjua 04-25-2007 02:53 PM

Stripper, Where'd you find it!? I've been looking everywhere around here and have only found RED... or no one carries it at all..!?!?

Care to get together so I can see what this stuff actually looks like?
stripperluva 04-25-2007 10:11 PM

Red is all I left.................seriously................in all of the fuggin metroplex (or at least 20 hardware stores beside lowes/homedepot as they discontinued it) there were only 4 cans of the stuff in black. And I bought all of them.....but left a few cans of red.
Matt_H 04-25-2007 10:16 PM

I started on my pod bezel today, and ran out. So I went to Home Depot and all they had was red. I went to Lowes and they had 20 or so cans of black.

So you guys know what to look for. :)

t3hWIT 04-25-2007 10:40 PM

Ha. I'm using it to paint the base for a visual aid on hydraulic systems. I was going to use wrinkling paint, but Plastidip is cheaper. ;)
IronMonkeyL255 04-25-2007 10:50 PM

I saw they carry it at our local Northern Tool and Equipment store.

Just a suggestion if you have one near you.

HAH!

Now that you posted that, I believe I actually have two or three cans of black in my trunk

I never made the connection...

I used this stuff to re-do the under body coating on my swap!

I remember that they only had 4 cans when I bought them out of this...at least I won't have to buy more now

Alright i have a question hopefully its not too far into the forum for it not get answered....I have an 02 wrx and i want to do the dash peices out of a 06, 07, i think im mgoing to get it out of a tr (if i can find one) that way i dont have to convert it to the new HVAC knobs, but i get how to do everything, but once it gets down the where the shifter its not the same, can i just replace the piece where the shifter is or am i going to have to go get the rest of the center console, and if i have to get the rest of the center console is the (brain fart dont kno what its called) the center console (the part that flips up with the compartment inside) is that the same with the 06-07 or am i going to have to replace the whole unit
sheepdog 04-26-2007 01:18 AM

Umm, try searching. There was just a thread on this like this morning where a guy explained exactly how to do it.
abgusaf 04-26-2007 01:36 AM

ahhhhh, sorry i read this thread just didnt relize how similair the 04 and 02 interiors are
Eric310 04-26-2007 05:43 AM

i am painting my stuff tomorrow i think after i get a hold of a can of this stuff. There is a lowes and a home depot pretty close to me so i think im good.

About the texture....is it rubbery? How hard would this be to clean? It looks like it picks up on lint and stuff.
ekw 04-26-2007 08:06 AM

Matt_H - good call on shooting the Autometer pod.
I am not happy w/ the waxy plastic look of mine,
nor the reflections off the upper inside surface.
This should do the trick nicely.
sheepdog 04-26-2007 09:12 AM

it does feel rubbery. its really easy to clean, just armorall or wipe it down.
Eric310 04-26-2007 01:23 PM

^nice...thanks sheepdog....I will be jumping in the shower and then disecting my interior after i pick up a can of this crap.
kaspur_eh 04-27-2007 03:38 PM

Great! Finally a solution to the cursed tan L interior. I'm going to start out with the lower dash, console parts... then the pillars... then the headliner...then the doorcards.
AcquaCow 04-27-2007 03:58 PM

-- Dave
Yup, checked last night...I did have two cans of black in my trunk still.

I pulled all of the parts up, sanded them down, I'll wash them with mineral spirits tonight, then spray them and get installed before the meet tomorrow if all goes well.

ATK 04-27-2007 04:21 PM

I've painted my Autometer Gauge bezel as well. All I used to scuff it up is one of those green scotch bright pads. I tested it on the back side and found that the sand paper (even 400 grit) would be too rough.

I would also like to note that you should follow the instructions on the can. The part where it tells you to spray to a glossy wet state. There was a couple of hard spots to get to and I wasn't able to get it sprayed smooth. So I'm up for round 2.
AcquaCow 04-27-2007 04:42 PM

I've just been using 00 steel wool. Works great...won't gouge anything.

-- Dave
bannerd 04-28-2007 08:24 AM

How well does this stuff perform as under coat? I used duplicolor last summer and after winter that crap just falls off.
gc8.love 04-28-2007 01:21 PM

Daym. I guess we've all been thinking about this.

Been looking at the thread for about two weeks now. I had an inkling of an idea about using it awhile ago, but missed my connection.

I used to use the clear spray-on on plastic models where I didn't want paint coming off of flexible and jointed bits..

Anyhow... Summit ($4.50 a can there) is out right now, so I have to go plunder the local hardware places..

This'll be nice for the RS (and something else), since I've got a few nicks in pillars and crap.

"WTF am I going to do after I sand that out, it'll look like *****.."

Someone going to post it up on the other board? I don't think I've ever seen anyone using it there.
vwown3d 04-28-2007 07:46 PM

i cant find this stuff anywhere. am i missing something. where is it located in the stores????
sheepdog 04-28-2007 08:19 PM

Usually in the paint section. Just call a lowes or home depot or another hardware store and ask, any one I've been to here in CO has had multiple cans.

If you have to end up resorting to ordering it online, that's an option too.
HAN 04-28-2007 10:28 PM

what grit sandpaper is everyone using on thier center console to prep it? I picked up 4 cans of black plasti-dip tonight on my local Lowe's, if I have time, I'll start tomorrow with the project...

Thanks,

Pete
IllNastyImpreza 04-28-2007 11:13 PM

as a undercoat too?> wow....
sheepdog 04-28-2007 11:27 PM

I've heard it works well as an undercoat, I actually used some of mine to cover up some spots on the bottom of my car where I've hit speedbumps/rocks apparently haha. It seems to be holding up fine, and I didn't even really prep it at all other than spraying it with a hose and letting it dry. Granted, it's already kind of a textured surface, and it doesn't need to look good.

I'd use a light grit, maybe 400? Too rough a grit will show through the plasti-dip, so be conservative.
