so has anyone fixed the glovebox latch rattle without just stuffing the gap with felt or something like that?
I went to walmart and got some of these:

I put them on the inside frame of the glovebox.
No glovebox rattles for me anymore.

So how do you get stones, pebbles and such out from your exhaust shields without removal?

My fix was to simply wrap the latch (u bracket that the door latches to) with a couple layers of electrical tape. No rattle for a few years now :)

2005 STI (No Mods).
Two main rattles. I don't know if they are covered in this thread specifically:
1. What sounds like a "VIN Plate" rattle seems to be coming from near the round vent hole on the drivers side. If I hit it, or hold it, it replicates and goes away. It sounds like a "knocking" or rattling of some relays under the dash. It's not a typical rattle noise. It knocks on slightly bumpy concrete or at low speed over hard bumps. Silent on smooth asphalt.
2. Is the Glovebox. I will try the fixes mentioned above. It got louder since I changed the cabin air filter. I think I may have damaged eh recirculation actuator in removing the filter.

Just picked up my 06 2.5i Impreza wagon, I noticed that in the rear doors (on the inside and towards the back of the car), right below the window frame, when you push on it, it makes an annoying squeak and it's on both rear doors. Anyone else noticed this? Seems like the panel is not attached tightly to the door?

Do you mean the entire long piece that stretches from the driver to the passenger side? If so, you can pop that out (see scoobymods). There's white plastic clips that hold that long piece in. You need to remove the white clips, and put a little dab of rubber cement then place the clips back on with the rubber cement that'll stop the rattling.
If it isn't that piece and it's actually the mounting point of the VIN plate you can try wedging something in-between the VIN to snug it up. I used a little strip of inner tube to get it all snug and since it's black really didnt look odd if a little part stuck out from the VIN.

It might be the black rubber near the side mirror. If you lube up the part that touches the glass that should do the trick. Roll down the window and the inner part of the rubber can be accessed. Just a little dab will do it. Don't use WD-40 or any other similar lube as it will degrade the rubber. I think white lithium or that dry grease stuff should work. Sorry I can't think of the exact name.

I think I have the same rattle. Hitting the dash a few times always works temporarily for me. I'm going to give the glove box rattle fixes a shot soon. If that doesn't work, I'll try the vent rattle fix.

So white lithium grease for the endlinks should work?
And all I need is a lil dab on that rubber seal of the triangle? I'm assuming the glass will spread it around on it's own.
I'm hoping with just a dab it might smear in the beginning but hopefully gets absobed into that seal.
Thanks will try tomorrow...

Sounds like the same type as the drivers one. Does it rattle when you close it? Open it up and check the bolts that hold up the track. Some may not be tight.

Got a new one that I don't think i've seen posted yet. There's a little plastic slot (where you can put small things like paper, pens, etc) below the radio that seems to rattle. I put my hand against the right wall and it stops - so i'm pretty certain it's coming from this little plastic slot (or potentially something behind it). I've tried tightening up the screws in glovebox since me pressing against the right wall might be inadvertently pressing up against the glove box - but it doesn't seem to fix. Anyone have any clues?

Not sure if anyone has this; coming from what sounds like the right rear of my wagon. Not really a rattle. Kind of sounds like an audio/stereo sound, like wires crossed on a speaker or something. Very low, but I notice it all the time ONLY when moving.

Cup holder squeak fix:
Remove cup holder. Remove the screw, and there's a tab you'll need to squeeze down a bit to get it out of there.
You can see that the top back of the cup holder assembly sits under a rail way back in the dash. The cup holder isn't actually attached back there, just uses it as a stay, so it rubs. You can probably find a dull patch on top of the holder where it's been rubbing.
I put a piece of moleskin on that spot and put it all back together. No more squeak!

Permanently banishing the glove box door rattle on an '02......
Changed the cabin air filter today, yuk!
While that section of the dash was apart I decided to check into the glove box latch
situation to see how much trouble it was going to be move the striker and stop
the rattle I've had since day 1.
Basically, it ain't too hard to do. You take the striker off the dash using a phillips
head screwdriver on two screws. You'll need to move the striker about 2 millimeters
in toward the front of the car. (On my car, this amount takes up the slack and lets
the door close tightly- no more rattle) I scooted the striker up to where I thought
it should be and using a sharpie marker, drew two reference marks onto the plastic.
I had to clamp the striker into a vise on my workbench and bend the flat bracket
about 2-degrees. (there's a 90-degree bend that needs to be opened up to about
91-degrees and the 45-degree section needs to be straightened so that it remains
flush with the dashboard, just like it was stock)
It took me about two attempts and about 5 minutes to get the bends just right.
When you mock it up to check the fit, the striker should now be in the forward
position, up against the reference lines you drew.
You'll also need to elongate the slots in the plastic 2mm toward the front of the car
so that you when you bolt the striker back into place you'll actually be able to get
the two screws you removed back into place. I used an exacto knife- took about
1 minute to do.
Sorry, no jpg's..... no camera to take them with
I wish I had fixed this rattle sooner. I feel stupid for having put up with it for 3+ years
when it was so easy to fix

The "obvious" answer is that the gb door is muffling the noise partially.
Noise is behind it in the dash area....
What it is, I don't know. I'd take out the gb assembly (just like you
would if you were servicing the cabin air filter) and drive the car, having
someone on the pass side check it out.
I looked for a rattle in a '99 Malibu once. I had the whole pass right side
interior apart before I discovered that the rattle was coming from the
pass seat adjusting lever

96 Outback Passenger rear door area rattle

I have a 96 outback and have a rattle at about 3000 rpms in the area of my rear passenger door. Thanks to everyone who's contributed to this great thread.

I've developed a very strange rattle in my auto-dimming rear view mirror over the past 2 days. Unlike a lot of other complaints, this is not because of an aftermarket sound system. It seems to have occured out of nowhere. At about 40mph, there's like a buzzing sound coming from the mirror, almost scratchy. At first I thought it was radio static because it sounds very similar, but it's definately coming from the mirror. It's not any exterior vibration, because I've tried holding every part of the mirror in place and the noise will not stop, so I suspect it's something inside. Has anyone encountered this kind of problem? Or, does anyone have detailed instructions on disassembling the auto-dimming mirror so I can find out what's going on? I swear it sounds like a small screw vibrating on the inside somewhere and it's driving me UP THE WALL :(
| DrD | 11-03-2006 07:24 AM |
Ok - so here's a new one - I have a clunk/knock of some sort - it happens every time I drive, and appears to be in the center or rear of the vehicle - it sounds like someone knocking on the underside of the car once - the weird thing is that it only happens a single time, then not again until the next time I go drive - and it doesn't happen at any particular time after I start driving - usually within the first mile or so, and it usually coincides with a bump or turn, but that's it... the rear strut tops are all torqued down properly, the jack, spare tire, tools, etc. are all secured, etc. - I can't figure out what it is... I did replace the rear transverse bushing on the drivers side, so I had the subframe off, but everything is torqued down properly, and nothing appears loose... any ideas?
| drees | 11-03-2006 12:59 PM |
I've got a similar knocking from the rear, DrD, but it happens all the time and is noticable at low speeds over small bumps. Annoying! I'm thinking it may be the seatbelts? It's certainly not my struts as I've had them apart a couple times and the sound remains.

I have the same problem. It's a rattle whenever I hit a small bump. From what I heard, it's the rear middle seatbelt mechanism. The locking latch on it is loose and rattles like a SOB!!
I'm tempted to rip open the rear cargo area to throw out that seat belt mechanism!

best thread ever!!!
for the A pillar driver side rattle....I removed the vent (it pops out) I lined the rounded vent part with foam insulation. It doesn't go back in all the way but I expected that with the foam making the piece larger, but the rattle isn't there anymore. The job makes the vent piece stick up a little, but no big deal for me when compared to that killer rattle.
Thanks to all who have contributed to this thread. Subi people are fanatics!!! :D

anyone ever figure out the rear deck tapping noise? it's metal on metal contact and it ranges from a tapping to a squeeking noise. i thought it might be the black metal bars that go across the trunk (i think they're part of the trunk hinge mechanism). does anyone have any feedback on rear strut bars and the effect on any rattles in the rear deck of a sedan?

+1, i've got something similar. it sounds more like a fingernail tapping on the glass. i thought it might be the rear seat top center mount, but it's not.

I just fixed the dash rattle on my car. Took out the plastic peice on the very front of the dash then I used silver RTV silicone used for sealing diffs and engine parts. I put it under the white clips and on the white clips, let it dry for a day then put it back in no rattle :D.

The trunk springs was the source of my creaking/tapping noises from the rear deck area. Adding grease to all the contact points on the springs to the trunk and hinges kills the sound completely for a couple of days. Then it comes back and I have to shift the grease around again. I think the only permanent solution is to remove the two springs completely.

The trunks springs are also the culprit with one of several noises, though I wouldn't want to take them off since it would suck to have to always find some way to keep the trunk open. Some noises you just have to live with unless you can figure out a way to put some thing between the trunk spring and the metal bracket its stays in.

i wonder if hood dampers could be modified or if the trunk could be modified to work with hood dampers....hmm...anyone?
I found the "VIN plate rattle" It in fact does not have anything to do with the actual VIN plate. The rattle is coming from the vent pointed at the driver side window. The vent tube is an attachment to the main vent. The point where the smaller vent tube slides into the main vent was causing friction. Thats why when you push down on the VIN you are actually placing pressure indirectly onto the dash piece that holds the defogger vent and the rattle goes away

The Solution: Remove the defogger vent. Then wrap it with Adhesive-backed felt on the outer tube area. The felt was purchased at Wal-Mart for $.79 its in the crafts area. Re-install tube and presto!
Results: No rattle, well at least not that one anymore
How do I get this vent out?

I had the squeaky rattle from the steering column shroud. It was coming from the bottom center. It seems to have stopped on its own - maybe the parts that were touching wore themselves down just enough that they aren't touching any more.
Now I'm getting the "fingernail tapping on glass" from the back. At first I thought it was the CD player skipping, until I realized the music wasn't skipping, and it also happens when the music is off.

Who doesn't have the dreaded "fingernail tapping the rear glass" noise?
I think it comes stock on these cars
I've had it on my '02 sedan for the last year and a half.
Drove myself nuts for about a month, trying to find it and silence it.
It's really quite insidious, but I'm learning to cope with it. The only thing
I haven't tried is removing and replacing the rear glass......

I just began hearing it when it started to get cold outside. I thought the glass was cracked. Not cool. Didn't hear it at all last winter though...
