plasti-dip part 6

IllNastyImpreza 06-08-2007 05:36 PM
All this has been covered early on in the thread. Read it, then ask questions.
actualy I've read it like 3 times.... but its been a while... I forgot :alien:
tairese 06-10-2007 11:24 PM

to keep a great thread going, Acquacow helped me put on a layer of this stuff on my interior. Seems like it will still scratch and stuff, and collects a lot of dust. Regardless, I like how the black interior looks now.

Doesn't scratch that easily though. Also if you screw up, the paint is really easily removable.
arco 06-11-2007 03:38 PM

what interior have you plasti-dipped? i'm really interested in the results. pictures would be great. thanks

Umm, read the thread?

There are pics everywhere...even as early as page 2.

imagine that, but with the red Limited Hazard and a black headunit.

Damn that dash looks good.

I need a red hazard.

i have read it, i thought that you had done other pieces of interior aside from the center console and the dual cluster bezel. that's all. so if nothing else was added to the list then nevermind. i have looked at this thread many times and actually admire your setup but you don't have to reply to me as if i was ignorant of using the forum properly. thanks nonetheless for the help.

I haven't posted any pics in this thread yet...so it's not my setup you are admiring...

people in this thread have taken entire tan, L, interiors and painted them black...that is what I was referring to when I told you to go through it.

I am currently working on a cup holder delete for the 04 dash, using an 05/06 center vent piece.

If that fits right, i'll take pics of it, as it'll be unique...otherwise, my interior looks just like the other 04 interior in this thread.

that looks awesome, how many coats of plastidip did you use for yours. Did you prep any differently than the others had mentioned?
geist 06-12-2007 02:26 PM

just wiped it down w/ rubbing alcochol...
then put it on..
one coat, and if i missed spots just ran over it...
that stuff is pretty forgiving.
imprezaowner27 06-18-2007 01:55 AM

ok ive skimmed for a little bit now and my question is....

If i sanded the panels with 1000 grit sandpaper (basically rubbing it with my fingers, the sandpaper was like a regular paper towel)

the paint did come off, and its REALLY smooth....but anyway

what would be best....spray paint, or this pasti-dip or w.e this stuff is

Does anyone know if the PlastiDip blue matches the STI interior at all??

I don't know, but thanks to you bringing this thread back to life I now have all my interior trim sitting in my room as the second coat of plasti-drip dries.:disco:

So far so good.:)

I'm picking some up on the way home. I might see if the blue is any good.....hmm

I painted my 04 dash with the krylon fusion satin black, but I just swapped an 05 sti console into my 04 so I may go with this and the overlays on the knobs. Ill be sure to post photos :)

Here's a snap of my old dash

Naa, it's one of those SN's I've had for years and use for most anything. Used to be a dog groomer back in high school for a while, that's kind of where it came from.

Looking good everyone, let me know how the blue matches up. The Plasti-dip lady also said the white can be mixed with stuff to color match earlier in the thread, but obviously that wouldn't work with the spraypaint can method. Hmm
rip420tide 06-28-2007 11:18 AM

Any updates on how this stuff collects dust/cleans? what about durability? I have an 06 OBS and was thinking of spraying the chrome grille surrounds with this stuff, in addition to my dash parts...

I've got a stock black hazard button if anyone wants it to match their black dash. Just PM me.

The S204 pieces I picked up from JapanParts are great. But...there's no 4EAT S204. So, Plasti Dip to the rescue! Now I'm rocking 1/2 S204, 1/2 Plasti Dip S204EAT!

Uncle Buck 06-29-2007 06:25 AM

this mod looks great and i want to do it eventually. plasty dip goes on with a little more texture than the actuall s202-203 and so on though. i remember sitting in a 202 and observing these areas of it. plasty dip looks awesome but i remember the s202 having a very smooth rubber feel. wonder if there is any way to achieve this with plasty dip?

You can do either a smooth or textured finish. If you spray it as directed on the can, to a gloss then it will be smooth. But if you further the can away from what you are spraying and don't allow it to get glossy, you can have a textured finish.
bikefreax 07-03-2007 10:56 PM

I have the greddy shift knob and got tired of how hot it gets so I used this stuff for it. The problem is it does not hold up well on parts that are used a lot. I can not keep it from peeling off around the edges. Any thoughts?
sheepdog 07-04-2007 12:30 AM

Hmm.... maybe an etching primer? I've tried spraying smooth metal things as well, and it doesn't stick very well at all. Maybe a rough grit sandpaper would work too.
bikefreax 07-04-2007 06:54 AM

I think the problem is the plasti dip does not actually stick tothe parts but creates a cover. Any sharp angles and it will rub off. Guess I will try and sand the edges down to a more rounder appearance.
SinisterSkube 07-09-2007 09:18 PM

it just makes a rubber coating, so yeah anything you do to prepare it will come off if it does, peel all of it and respray. mine collects some lint, what do you do to clean easily?
scottjua 07-09-2007 09:22 PM

I found that a damp Absorber cleans it really well. And there's no lint. :)
eurospek 08-08-2007 12:06 AM

Well I've finally found the courage and time to respray my 2002 WRB bugeye all in black Plasti-Dip. The hood, trunk, and door jambs are all still WRB which adds a nice contrast to the matte black finish. The car simply looks stunning now and also added gold Rota P45F.

I didn't take any before pics but I'm doing this right now. I just read the part above about spraying to a gloss to get a smooth finish. I haven't been doing that so far. Do you think if I started doing it to a gloss now it would give it a smooth finish? I've done 3 light coats already.

-joel
IronMonkeyL255 08-14-2007 01:18 AM

It seems to hold up pretty well on exterior applications as well.

Whatever paint I put on my grill would eventually chip. Finally I picked up a can and put a few coats on it. So far it seems pretty durable. I figure the rubberiness (made-up words, FTW!) of the paint will help keep it from chipping.

I also painted the steering column cover with it, since the stock piece was grey and stood out between my black cluster and black steering wheel. I haven't put it back on yet, but it turned out looking really nice.
jojotherider 08-16-2007 08:58 PM

i'll try and get some pics tonight. I think I put too much on. I have an 02 and the cup holder doesn't open up anymore. I think the plasti-dip on the cupholder is catching on the piece below and not letting it pop forward. I'll probably just sand it down with some 600 grit.

other than that, i really like it. :) now its time to dye the headliner and pillars.

eurospek 08-16-2007 09:05 PM

^ Let me know how the sanding goes, we tried sanding my friend's Audi rings that he Plasti-Dip'd but we just made them worse. This product at least for us couldn't be sanded and corrected like an ordinary rattle can job.
sheepdog 08-17-2007 02:49 PM

Yea, but you can just peel it off and respray it over again. Time consuming, but allows you to spray a few less coats and fix the cupholder problem.
jojotherider 09-01-2007 03:51 PM

So I didn't have to sand it at all for it to start opening normally. Just opened and closed it a few times and it wore itself down. However, I broke the thing where it screws in so now it doesn't hold it. bummer.

here are some pics:

Don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet, but you can find plastidip at most Menard's stores.
Dragicon 09-02-2007 07:30 PM

^^ Also at Home Depot if you dont have Menards in your area.
bgshiznit 09-03-2007 05:21 PM

I ordered a few cans of Plasti Dip about 2 months ago. They'd just been sitting in the box, I finally decided this was the weekend to paint.

Painted vs stock:

Checking to see if the pieces match:

The paint peeled while removing the masking:

I tried to rescue it but decided it would be easier to repaint:

After the repaint:

i love the plasti-dip look. im gonna have to do this to my 05. the stock paint on it is all scratched up now :(

would look soooo sick with the jdm hazard button :)
Dokturseuss 09-04-2007 08:10 PM

Im in the process of prepping my door cards in my 99L, but how do i get into the door pockets, so there isnt grey when you look into them?

EDIT: just did a test piece on the trim around the door and window locks, looks great. This stuff really does look oem. I bet if we sprayed the clear plastidip over the black it would give it a nice clean look
puma1337 09-05-2007 12:42 AM

I just did this to my '06 wrx. I did the same thing as bgshiznit and it turned out really well. I used 4 coats with 30 minutes in the sun inbetween.
ATK 09-05-2007 02:22 AM

I've got a black hazard switch if anyone from 05+ wants it to match their new black panels since I know 05+ has silver switches.
antiks 09-05-2007 02:24 AM

I got this painted on the back of my front license plate w/ the soopah jdm angle bracket...and it got crushed by the car wash...and the plasti-dip is still on it after bending back my plate straight...i'll post pics later!

doesnt it say on the can try to keep out of direct sunlight? im sure it wont hurt it in short spurts however :)
djosrs 09-12-2007 12:21 PM

Anyone who has done this on the top half of the dash .... did it reduce light glare? Does anyone have closer / HD pics of the top of the dash. I am already doing the whole care up in black suede .... navy blue suede and black plasti dip.

Will post picstures when I finish sometime this week.

Trying to reupholster my Spraco seats (center ) and my back seats too
jojotherider 09-12-2007 12:45 PM

So the cupholder ended up sticking again. I gave it a little sanding and it didn't help. I pulled it out to have a closer look. Turns out the tray in the back had a bunch of plasti-dip spray on it. Cleaned it off and no more problems.

maybe I should have masked it off. ah, well, all is good now.

2001stook 10-18-2007 10:55 PM

Has anybody sanded their dash to remove the textured look? I have some damage to my dash - a small shallow gouge - that I was hoping to repair using, in part, Plasti Dip. From what I am seeing reading through the thread the texture of the OEM plastic shows through. Should I sand it down? Any ideas?

Also, any ideas for how to fill the small damaged area prior to applying the plasti dip?

thanks!

Awesome... looks like the same effect I got out of mine. (posted a few pages back)

For the HVAC rings, if you need to repaint a third time pop out that little orange transparent indicator before painting, so you don't have to mask it and risk it peeling again.

Isn't it awesome that you can just peel and retry? ^_^

TIP: best way to clean it I found was the brush attachment on my dyson. Vacuum lightly and voila.

Everything is holding up fine in the engine bay. I sprayed my washer, coolant and oil caps and the top of the dipstick. Clean up is super easy the way I did it. I didn't allow it to flock, I sprayed until I saw a gloss and it created smooth surfaces. Wipes clean with a wet towel.
