Producing C/F Defi Guage Pod part 1

saewickson 01-04-2002 12:47 AM

Producing C/F Defi Look Guage Pod

I posted about a month back that we would most likely go to production with a Carbon Fiber gauge pod that somewhat resembled the Defi. Well, the most likely has turned into definitely.

Currently there are three prototypes that are being looked at and one more in the initial phases of build-up.

Here is where the members of I-club come into play. I need some more feedback from you guys and girls. And here is why, the prototypes differ slightly. The first is the typical 3 gauge style and contains a 52 mm. gauge, the second will house a 60 mm. gauge, and the third contains only two 60 mm. guages but will retain the stock clock.

The fourth is top secret and will be availible in limited quanities. And as for the GC 8 crowd the gauge pod is not far behind.

Thanks again! for all of your help and I hope to have them ready to ship by mid February. Please either reply to thread with your opinion or e-mail me at [email protected].

im definately interested in the one that keeps the stock clock, thats exactly what ive been waiting for! Pricing and pics would be helpful
sherifx 01-04-2002 01:19 AM

as long as you decrease the height of the hood w/ the 52mm guages I'm interested... keep us posted with pictures please and in the pictures, include the DEFI Guage pod next to yours for basis of comparison. Thanks

In2Deep 01-04-2002 01:26 AM

52mm would look great if the housing itself were reduced as well. If the housing size is going to remain unchanged, the 60mm gauges look the best. Otherwise I don't think the configuration with the clock would be the most appealing "lookswise".

Have you considered teaming up with a vendow who makes Turbo Timers/Electronic Boost Controllers and integrating that into the gauge design? That would be sweet!
saewickson 01-04-2002 01:44 AM

The height of the hood is decreased on the 52 mm. and they are proportionally adjusted so that the it does not look like the 52's where just slammed into the hood that was designed to hold the 60's.

This has been well thought out and will soon have at least one of every prototype produced in C/F ready to be photographed. Currenly we are working on getting the mounting system worked out, and final plug prep and break-in taken care of.

As for the price, currently none has been set. By this time next week I should have a better idea of final cost and know better when and what the final gauge pods will be that will be included in the initial production run.

clocks and guages

I'm not geeked on the Defi pod myself, I think it's a bit to large. I'm also looking for something that's not quite stock. I guess what I want doesn't exist, yet.

Regarding the clock option, that sounds nice but why? I notice that autometer makes a clock sized gauge that appears to pop right into the gauge pod with what ever other gauges you want.

For some the draw back might be that the autometer clock gauge is *gasp* analog :)

I'm trying to visualize how the gauge pod would look if it had two gauges and one digital clock in it. I think it might look a bit odd over all and unbalanced.

Just some thoughts.
ErrnBurr 01-04-2002 01:46 PM

OMG, I was just talking to my friend the other day about the Defi pod.

The smaller Defi style pod with 3 52mm gauges is the exact thing I was looking for, I liked the look of the Defi, just not the size, and C/F to boot! Please keep us informed on this, I'm very interested on how these turn out.

porkchop 01-04-2002 02:42 PM

why not make a pod with different inserts? one for all 60mm gauges, one for 2 60mm and 1 52mm...etc etc..

porkchop, those look awesome! Where did you get a hold of them?
dwx 01-04-2002 06:42 PM

An insert for 52mm gauges in a Defi pod would look wrong. I definitely am interested in a smaller Defi type pod that fits 52mm gauges. It would be great to have one that retained the stock clock but I don't know how doable that is in something that holds 52mm gauges.
porkchop 01-04-2002 07:18 PM

IN2Deep - I found those pictures surfing around. They do look awsome and I wish someone would start producing these....

or if someone knows where I can get these...please post here....=)

Thanks

We will have the 3 gauge 52 mm pods ready first most likely by the end of January. The prototype for the 2 gauge that retained the stock clock was an idea brought to light by a friend (that is the omly reason I have the prototype, it was intended as a one off piece for his car, but it will be available).

I wish thank everyone for the feedback in this post and all others, and wish all members of I-club a Happy New Year.

I'm not so hot about the carbon look anymore. Any chance that you may produce one to match the wrx interior??

Can you make them to match the stock interior, too? I'm down if you can Keep us posted!

i'd definately be interested in the 52 mm one! keep us posted on this, it looks awesome

Dougeefresh 01-05-2002 06:27 PM

I am ready to put my money down for a 2x60mm & clock pod.
I already have a gauge and I need a pod to put it in.
This would be perfect!
Any pictures coming up soon?
Thanks.

saewickson 01-05-2002 07:43 PM

Pics within the week. As for matching it to the stock interior, that may be somewhat of an issue. But, what we can try is to produce them in fiberglass, gel them, and the try to atch them to the stock interior with a flat finish vinyl paint. I am not sure how the finish would be on it, but I can try and will get back to you guys.

Why not have them kind of tilted towards the driver. There's one out there already on an Austrian site. I don't have the site right now. They're pretty cool looking.

My "Wish" list is a holder that would hold 2 60mm gauges and my Blitz SBC-iD,even better if it can hold my Blitz DC FATT also (SBC-id being on the far left side closest to driver) That also matched the stock dash color. That would be sweet, I'd buy it NOW. I just recently (last night) made my own pod using the factory gauge pod and ABS plastic to hold my SBC-iD and DC FATT. Looks OK, but would rather have some 60mm gauges:D
tdxflex 01-06-2002 04:22 PM

i would be interested in one for 52mm gauges, but need to see pics and a price first.
WRXnFX 01-06-2002 04:50 PM

I'm also interested in the gauges facing the driver. Just like the RHD JDM version but for LHD.
VKL 01-06-2002 05:00 PM

If it was'nt to much trouble (sendind it to Scotland) and the price is right i would be interested in a 3 gauge pod for my 2001 WRX.

Paul
Dr. WOT 01-06-2002 07:27 PM

I'd be concerned about the CF being too shiny. There's nothing worse than a shiny dash reflecting on the windshield. This is evident even in the pics posted by Porkchop. Can you comment on this?
saewickson 01-06-2002 08:22 PM

>>>Carbon fiber is usually pops out of the plug in a very high gloss finish. But, it can be lightly scuffed to tone this down without loosing the total appeal and w/o damage to the fibers themselves.
It has been my experience that the C/F on the dash does not reflect nearly as bad as guys who have the white dash in their cars (like driving through an eternal fog).

>>>As for shipping to Scotland this should be easy to accomodate, but it may take a little longer to get to your destination (a some additional shipping).

>>> To fit the boost controllers as various other units like an S-AFC for example, is in the works but will probably be released at a later date. Compared to the 52 mm, 60 mm pods, and the cold air box, which should hit the market the middle of next month.

>>> I hope this answer most of your questions and if not feel free to e-mail me, or reply to this thread.

Winslow
saewickson 01-06-2002 09:56 PM

My apolagies Winslow, I believe it is possible that we can face the gauge to be angled towards the driver. I do not have the plug here in front of me right now. But, will look as soon as I get a chance to do so.

I have my gauges angled towards myself located in the glove box, in one of my cars with an AFC control mounted below (personally I like the angled gauges so I don't have to break my neck to see what is going on.

I will seriously look in to this issue. Does anyone else wish to see this happen?

Again I apolagize for the oversight,

as you can see its a horrible picture, but you can get the idea, curve the inner (or outer for RHD) tips of the top of the over hang on the DEFI guage pod, and then add some sort of spacers which will also angle the guages facing the left (or right for RHD).
WRXnFX 01-06-2002 10:25 PM

Thanks for the quick reply! If you can make this in Defi form for 60mm gauges and angled for RHD in either the carbon or stock interior, then I'm IN! Don't mean to be specific but that is what I want. What is the estimated price looking like?

Sherifx - Nice sketch, hahaha!

RS_NW 01-07-2002 10:31 AM

Chances these are being made for the GC8?
smp291 01-07-2002 10:50 AM

sounds pretty damn cool to me! escpecially if the price is right... what about making a Titanium colroed one also, nah that would prolly look odd....
saewickson 01-07-2002 01:06 PM

The GC8 will run about 2 to three weeks behind the release date of the WRX. This one is taking a little longer, b/c we are making it one piece that ties into the A/C vents. In addition I have had a little trouble bringing in a GC8 to get the necessary info. and initial plugs.

No, I didn't forget about the GC8, and thanks for the question RS_NW,

COLD AIR BOX? what's up with that? detail please...
Zahnster 01-07-2002 02:33 PM
The fourth is top secret and will be availible in limited quanities.
What kind of tease is this?

I too like the idea of angled towards the driver a bit. Nothing too extreme that a helpful passenger can't watch the gauge for you.
saewickson 01-07-2002 08:44 PM

The cold air box is a piece that is being worked on for a friend from the area. Essentially the box is an oversized version of the stock that will incorporate a low restriction cone-style element. That will be vented to the outside of the vehicle.

Well, I know this sounds pretty rudimentary, but here is what makes it special (or a least to my friend that wants it). The process that we use to cure the piece and produce makes it resistant to temperatures exceeding 250 degrees. Hence under hood temperature has no bearing on the charge air temp. In additon it is a cold air b/c it is vented outside of the vehicle (lowering charge temp, and increasing Hp), but the filter does not pick-up all the grime off of the road, both extending filter life and overall consistant performance.

As for the ***TOP SECRET*** Here is the deal someone touhed upon it earlier. It will contain 2 gauges, a boost controller, and one more device that I am going to leave out....

Thanks,
KaSpeR

I like that 3 guage pod in cf looks real good I origonaly wanted a dual A pillar but that ones pretty nice
jblaine 01-08-2002 10:31 PM

As far as tallying desires go: I'd be down for a 2 (or 3 if needed) 52mm gauge, non-CF, smaller-than-Defi, interior-matching, and slightly driver angled hood/pod. :)
saewickson 01-08-2002 10:33 PM

Well back to answering the questions, I will answer the questions in the order that they appear on the thread.

>>ezparts: We currently do not have a price. In order to answer why we do not, we have not ran them through production yet. So, we have not figured out what are cost is (i.e. resin, c/f, gel, and mounting brackets). We calculate our cost per piece to produce and include the labor. I intend to set the price at what I believe will be exceptionally fair and within the means of everyone who wishes to own it.

>>wop: It may have the clock and the boost controller, initially however the plans ar for the 60mm with 3 and the 52 with 3. As for which boost controller the one that will be built (that was top secret) houses the blitz.

>>DeliciouSpeed: I intend to keep everyone posted, with all news that occurs.

>>illmatic: Price is a major issue for all of us, and we all have wanted a piece for are car and found it to be out of reach due to an absurd price. That is not our intention, we want to make this availible to the masses not just the upper 1%. And I have not been able to find a price on the defi, so if someone know's it post it up and then I will reply A.S.A.P..

I hope this answers all questions at the moment, I will end this post with... I can't thank the members of i-club enough for your feedback, without your feedback we would not have the sense of direction that we do for both the WRX and the GC8. Our goal is to produce pieces that you the owners want to see, and of a superior quality to what is currently on the market. I will also take this time to apolagize for anyone questions that I have missed.

Thanks,
KaSpeR

saewickson, was wondering if you could make a guage that could house two 52mm guages (or one), and an Apex'i AVC-R? Man thanks for all the constant updates, I can say that I really appreciate it from a consumer standpoint :) Keep up the good work!

odd but true

I don't like the carbon fiber look. It's just freaky to me. I'm very interested in gauge pods like described here but am disapointed to hear that as of right now it's a carbon fiber only finish.

Matching the dash color in the 02 WRX would be much prefered for me. :)
saewickson 01-09-2002 12:14 AM

Working to see wether or not we can produce the piece in fiberglass and then match with some sort of vinyl paint to match. Then only problem is we are having problems finding a vinyl paint that matches the wrx interior perfect. In addition I have some issues with the durability of vinyl paint. I plan to contact a friend in the days to follow the works in plastics, to see if he can use one of my molds to pour a plastic into. And produce a piece that will have the factory look.

>>>Sherifx, it is possible to make one to fit the AVC-R, but am unsure how many gauges will fit with it. Will post up or send me an e-mail and I will look into it and reply.

Defi Pod for WRX retail for around $160. Last price I saw on www.defi-shop.com was $145
postr 01-09-2002 05:34 AM

Defi price and paint...

The cheapest that I have seen the Defi pod is $140 from MachV.

Info that I received from another forum member that is apparently an exact match for the factory color:

The paint, as I mentioned earlier, is made by SEM and is for use on plastic and rubber. It is actually labeled as a urethane bumper coater and the color code number is 39163 and it is called "Ford Smoke M".
saewickson 01-09-2002 10:53 AM

Thanks! Well I can say this with certainty for the factory look the factory look interior gauge pod will be siginificantly less than the defi.

Postr: Wow thanks for the definitive information on the interior color. I know of a paintshop near my place that carries some of their products. I will stop there later today to see if he has it in stock or can order it for me.

Thanks for the help,
KaSpeR
WRXnFX 01-09-2002 06:49 PM

Thanks for all the updates. To keep production cost low, I wouldn't worry about color matching the pod to the stock interior but if it wouldn't increase the price too much then go for it. I have found that Testor's spray paint #1949 matches perfectly.
02WRXer 01-09-2002 09:03 PM

Saewickson I would like to know if your pod will look anythinglike the POD's porkchop post a little while back. Those Pods are phat and I would deffiently buy one especially the second image on a WRX ( the one that includes the vents and radio.) Plz keep us posted and give us some pics soon.
porkchop 01-09-2002 09:47 PM

actually the 2nd pic is from a GC8, but if someone can rig something up like that for the EJ20 that would be nice...put the gagues closer to the driver...and keep the pod hood's profile down a bit...I'll try to photoshop a picture of it...

bewarned..my PS skills sucks! haha..
