nice rack, but Re0-70's in the snow?...have fun!

That is disgusting..and its not even an opinion its FACT. if you can afford an sti you can afford a winter beater to drive to and from the mountain....

You're retarded.... let him do what he wants to his damn car. If he wants to drive this car with the hitch then so be it. Not everyone that buys this car does so for the reason that you do.

Dont be jealous that he has and can afford one, and do what he wants to it.

where in the owners manual does it say you cannot put a hitch on an sti? why would i want to buy a "beater" to drive 3 hours and to and from, up a mountain in the snow? Isnt that what subarus are made for?

thanks for all the compliments guys!
haters hate on!
darknightohio 12-10-2006 09:54 AM

Just curious, why didn't you go for a roof rack instead?
taylormade 12-10-2006 10:12 AM

I like it! I have the same setup on my wagon. I'll have to find photos...

As for what that vs. roof rack, I worried about beating up the roof putting bikes and gear up there, and it is easier with the rear rack (tilts, so you can get the hatch open etc).
gingertooth 12-10-2006 10:14 AM

just wondering how many boards that rack will hold??

chose this incase i plan on towing any type of small trailer in the future. like i said in my first post, if i plan on running r-compunds i could get a trailer to store the tires and tools

to tell you the truth, the STi is a rally car, it's meant to be driven in any condition!! that's why i bought mine, i drive mine everywhere, i love my car, but it's no luxury car that i barely drive. i dont buy it to only drive it durin da summer.
arod87 12-10-2006 11:54 AM

o yea, i also forgot to mention that last week here in illinois when it snowed like 13 inches, i fell into a ditch and drove right out with the STi, pretty sure if i had any other front wheel drive car i woulda been fudged

wow, people tend to forget what a SUBARU is meant to be... (besides a car for lesbians...) They are do all go anywhere workhorses. The impreza line is a little less go anywhere then the other sub's, but it still is a subaru! Personally i think they should come STOCK with a class I receiver hitch...
WhiteFox 12-10-2006 01:46 PM

What kind of hitch is it?
I want to get one for my wrx in the spring so I can trailer my dirtbike. Is it really noticeable when you dont have anything on it?

its the etrailer.com hitch. Its hardly noticeable without attachments and install was fairly easy.
WhiteFox 12-10-2006 02:21 PM

How well does it clear you CBE? I have an SPT CB and its not that big, but I don't want it to hit. I am getting KB hangers so that the clearence will be greater as well.

You sir, are brilliant.

I think it looks good. But - I'd get a set of winter wheels/snow tires before hitting the mountain. Those RE070's are not going to do well...
RskTrance4mer 12-10-2006 03:12 PM

great idea..yeah i tried sticking snowboards into my back seat scratched my back center console and i have some scratches on my doors..anything is better than sticking in the backseat =D
06BlackSTIwith550WHP 12-10-2006 03:21 PM

sweet mod it looks like it easy to pull on and off just like a regular hitch(slides in slides out) if it were there for good i'd be all over this guy but he needs a way to get his and his buddies boards back and forth so why not put a hitch on the AWD beast.
DocWyte 12-10-2006 03:53 PM

I'm just going to have some clear bra placed on the roof where the roof rack feet sit. That way I don't have to worry about the paint being damaged. I already have a full wrap on the front end...
tacomaprime 12-10-2006 04:16 PM

You should have spent the money and gotten a roof rack of some kind. That looks gay as hell.

Spend 33k on a car, and 250 on a gay snowboard holder. LAME

Not diggin the stylin, I have the roof rack, but anyway to get your gear to the moutain is always a plus. Have fun hittin the slopes.

clearance is proably likea centimeter. I bought the kartboy extra long hangers but it dropped the exhaust TOO low so im running the stockers, but so far its fine. I plan on geting some kartboy stock size hangers since they will be stiffer.

silver2004impreza 12-10-2006 09:28 PM

I've got a hitch on my '04 wagon, and it's done some amazing things, like towing my wife's '88 Legend when the ignition coil died, or towing my friend's Malibu when he overheated it and blew the head gaskets. I know that I'm only supposed to be able to tow 2000 pounds, but my little non-turbo wagon doesn't seem to have a problem towing other cars. These things seem to be damn near unbreakable.
gingertooth 12-10-2006 09:48 PM

dude, all you idiots saying that is punishment to your sti or not good for it is plain old sillly. you retards ever get out and snowboard or have any other hobbies? get real yo. if the brother wants to enjoy life then hell, go tear it up man. and why would you want a roof rack on that thing when you don't have to worry about they paint on the roof? You can put a bike rack or snowbaord rack on it and tow little trailers if you have to. Some people are just too stupid to understand i guess!

You get a car to suit your needs, if you need a utility vehicle thats what you get. Im sure the army would like to drive benz in iraq but it just doesnt make sense. If you really want to GET REAL he should have gotten a different car to haul his stuff around in but you cant cry over spilt milk so enjoy your limited... ;)

i take it, you would probably be happier if it was fwd too?? it ain't a corvette. it's a subaru!!
JCity 12-11-2006 06:51 AM

I'm not really into the hitch and rear snowboard rack setup
but i do feel you about damaging your paint, i snowboard too and run a roof rack but when i take off my rack you can definitely see the damage :(

broken driver side roof molding, scratched up roof that looks like it's been in a fight with a bear ftl :furious:
ekw 12-11-2006 08:07 AM

yes! daily driven STi limited for the win.
buying another vehicle and making a garage queen out of this car would be the lame option, in my opinion.
not wild about the look, but for a limited use set up, it is an ideal compromise.
it sounds like some of the posters cannot fathom the idea that it won't be on your car when you are not headed to/from the slopes.

and how can they tell the sexual preference of the snow board holder & hitch?
very odd . . .
gingertooth 12-11-2006 09:08 AM

it's just there to do its job and not harm the beautiful car it is.
steve 12-11-2006 04:57 PM

So many 'tards, so little time.....

To the OP, don't mind the haters. I have a hitch on my STi, she runs 12's, and I bet she'll kill most of the cars owned by the idiots who replied here. Don't mind them, chances are they're still driving the same ****box they have had for the last 5 years, while we're driving new cars. The jealousy runs deep.

;)
Buford 12-17-2006 01:01 PM

I bought my STi specifically for the mountains and snow!! duh

nice addition!!
lobelsteve 01-02-2007 02:56 PM

Just put the factory hitch on my 04 STI. Bolts right up. Have not attempted the electrical yet but the scoobymods makes it look easy.

Warning- practice with a sawzall before trying it on your car as a first go around. I got a Ryobi 18v combo set for Xmas as well as the hitch. My car looks like it got a military haircut to the rear underbelly.
It actually looks better with the hitch and no plastic hanging down.

It's easily removable. I chose to go hitch mount for my bikes because i dont want to scratch my car or get mud on them. Maybe he did this for a similar reason. Good thing it's not your car huh? :disco:
Psybin 01-21-2007 06:05 PM

Im thinking of doing something similar for a bike rack if I can find a hitch that will clear my exhaust. If not Ill have to do the roof rack thing which I dont like too much. But it will be worth it to hit the trails next summer.

Not to hijack your post, but would any hitch clear this?
I didn't think of this earlier, but has anyone here driven any kind of car with this kind of rack in moderate-heavy crosswinds? Is it noticeable?
I've driven with two bikes on my hitch rack in 30-40 mph crosswinds. nothing too out of the ordinary, but having two bikes on the rack WILL kill mileage. 3mpg hit or so, depending on wind.
gingertooth 01-26-2007 08:54 AM

it is worse when the bikes on the top too. so your better off using a tow hitch for them instead.
Aaron'z 2.5RS 01-26-2007 10:09 AM

Personaly, I THINK IT ROCKS....

I mean one of the ultimate rally cars on the "road" in stelth mode with the rack on the back... MORE POWER TO YA....

I would however consider full on winter tires, they simply can't be beat in the slushies.... i wouldn't drive my bebe without'em.... summer tires are for summer, winter tires are for winter.... WHAT THE HELL ARE ALL SEASION TIRES FOR.... (puttin your baby in a ditch on a mountain pass, while rockin out with your friends)

I'll tell you all what, my RS LIVES FOR THE WINTER..... it's my friend, has always done me right, even when i use it as a TRUCK...

Ya'll wanna laugh at some funnay ass pics of my RS WORK TRUCK...well here ya go....

Helpin my pops take some hay to the market.... :D

Here is THE way to do yard work.......

I didn't haul this one full.... but we did have to get it out of the field.... the white trailer in the background get's hauled round by me to... there is never a problem unless the toung weight gets to high...
Oh, and Jetskis... notta problem, i don't have pics of the car with the Seadoo XP on the back, but sure wish i did

So go ahead laugh it up, but when i pass ya, with my trailer on the back, while your tryin to kill yourself in your winter-beat.... just think, you COULD have been driving THE BEST dam winter car EVER.....
Dr.Chris 01-26-2007 11:02 AM

I think it is briliant. A friend of mine who is also into bikes like myself just got an STI about 3 months ago. He managed to get his hitch on and cut just a small notch in the diffuser and still get it to work. Looks great, and now he'll be able to intall a great bike rack. I'm thinking of doing the same thing because the rack will be easier to take off from a hitch than a roofrack that may scratch the pain. I drive a SRT-4 now, so I just throw my bike in the back seat, but at the end of the year I plan on getting a STI and I may be installing a hitch too.
Love the Limited, love the hitch.

I would have started a new thread for this but I'm new and I can't.

I have an '04 WRX sedan, and I'm thinking about adding a hitch to do some light towing. Subaru lists the towing capacity for my car, but apparently towing is only recommended for the wagon. Does anyone know why this is? I was under the impression they were basically the same car. Can I tow with the sedan?

Thanks
IllNastyImpreza 02-03-2007 04:00 PM

using a utility rack thing on the back, sort of contradicts the point of buying a "sports car". I agree that for sport utility, one should use something designed for that. why not just pick up an old legacy wagon? besides...how much freakin wind resistance does that thing add??? the price you save in gass would almost pay for the old legacy :)
quentinberg007 02-03-2007 04:21 PM

But then you add in the cost of repairs and insurance for the legacy, and it doesn't make any sense. Getting a 2nd car makes no sense when you've got a car that is already as practical as an Impreza. If he were putting this hitch on an S2000 or BMW Z4 M coupe, yeah, you might have a point. Either way, he'll only have the hitch rack on when he's taking trips. Regardless, I have my doubts that someone who drives an STi is concerned about gas mileage.

I would have gone w/ a hitch mount on both my cars given the oppritunity. On my Impreza, a friend was selling a generic brand roofrack for really cheap (already had the fitkit for the Impreza), so I bought it. I then bought Thule trays to mount my bikes up there. The roof rack destroyed the roof of my Impreza. There are visible scratches where the rack sits and the back crossbar doesn't stay on well at all.

When I ordered my GTI, I got the factory aero kit, so that ruled out the rear hitch option and I've already spent $200 on bike trays. So, for the GTI, I bought a complete Thule crossbar, feet, and fairing. I have 3M clear pads to put down where the feet and fairing touch the car. Hopefully I don't end up w/ the same damage I got from my Impreza. Still, I think hitch mounts are by far the best way of keeping your car from getting trashed.

^^^^
Call your dealership and ask the service manager. They will give you the straight scoop with towing and your warranty etc etc.

I put a De Lan hitch on today that I bought used from a member here. It was kind of a pain doing it by myself but it went on and fit decent, I had the kartboy long hangers on and put my stock hangers back on. It pushed the exhaust down about a half inch. I ordered a black receiver plug from ebay tonight. I know it doesnt exactly look pretty but when Im enjoying the trails soon on my Gary Fisher, it will be worth it (rollin on 29's). Plus I dont think anyone besides car fanatics will look twice at it, and I dont run into that many.

Oh yea, what do you guys suggest as a rack, a two bike rack, i dont need a swinging or swivil type.
