Could one of the moderators make this a "sticky" post since there are already numerous RAC threads?
As for the rally, I can't freeg'in believe it!!!!!!!!! I was looking for McRae in the standings on SS4, then I get to the bottom and see "McRae rolled-RETIRED. " I lost my breath :) OMG I can't believe it, I can't believe it!!!
C'mon Burns!
C'mon Subaru!

Someone joked on scoobynet that Burns had retired too, then someone said he actually has!! I can't get www.rally-live.com at work, somone has to keep us informed!!
PS. I asked the mods to sticky this until the rally's over as soon as I posted it.
Edit: They were only joking! Here's another good site for info:-

Stand easy Toerag...
The joker on Scoobynet was joking again.
Stage 5 doesn't start for another 90 mins or so, 12:40 GMT.
Gutted about Colin's retirement. Still not sure if I want Burnsie to win, even though it is a Scooby. It's a Scotland/England thing!
Colin, Nicky, Tommi & his stand in co. all unhurt. There's always next year.
Mike.

Even if Burns only finish the rally in his 3rd place right now, he will be the Champion.

The lowest position Burns can get is 4th. Sainz would have to come in 1st place and they would have the same amount of point. If Burns is in the top 3, then he won it easily. If Burns gets 4th, you would have to look at Sainz and see if he's in 1st place. With Sainz over a minute behind the leader, I don't think he will get 1st.
All Burns has to do is take it easy the rest of the way. He's got to stay cool and not make too many mistakes.

I called McRae's mistake!! Woohoo...had a feeling he would overdue it and retire on the Second Day. :D Let's hope Burns can kep it together and bring it hoe third. I would be sick if Sianz won another one.

Burns finished the day in 3rd place about 11 seconds behind 2nd and 30-some-odd behind 1st. It looks very, very good for Richard at the moment. Let's hope the git can keep it on the road two more days. :D
What really sucks though is he'll be taking his number 1 plate with him when he leaves Subaru. :(

Not looking too good from the team perspective with Solberg and Martin out and Arai down in 13th. Not sure if Burns' success speaks better for him or the car - probably the former. I don't know enough about the sport to say what this spells for the SWRT in '02. Can only hope Makinen and Mannisenmaki heal up and that the car becomes more reliable.

Burns up to 2nd place!
Burns is now in 2nd after SS7, 37.4 seconds down from Gronholm.
Markko Martin is out with electrical failure, and Gilles Panizzi (Peugeot) hit a rock and dropped out due to engine/xmission problems. Solberg also went out due to fuel pressure problems in SS1.
Edit: the mitsubishi site is still being updated, so I've got rid of the driver's placings.
There's coverage at 19:30 on eurosport and 12:35 at night on BBC2 if you can get either of those channels.

Actually, he was still in after that. He retired after he was changing a tire and a passing rally car kicked up a rock and hit him. He had to be sent to the hospital. I don't know how severe it is though.
Also, Sainz and Auriol spun their cars in SS8. Hopefully Burns doesn't make a mistake and he has no mechanical problems unlike the pther Subaru's.

According to http://www.autosport.com/liverallytimings.cfm, after Stage 8 the order is
1) Marcus Gronholm/Timo Rautianen, No. 1 Peugeot 206, 1h20:15.000
2) Richard Burns/Robert Reid, No. 5 Subaru Impreza, -36.500sec
3) Harri Rovanpera/Risto Pietilainen, No. 29 Peugeot 206, -52.400
4) Didier Auriol/Denis Giraudet, No. 2 Peugeot 206, -2:10.000
5) Carlos Sainz/Luis Moya, No. 3 Ford Focus, -2:26.900
Now if Burns can just stay out of trouble!
Edit: Oops, had the stage differentials, not the rally.
Edit Edit: Problem again, this is from Speedvision's site. I'm just going to go back to lurking again

*whips out calculator*
Burns has to finish fourth or better to win the championship.
He must also make sure Sainz doesn't win the rally.
As long as he finishes 4th or better it don't matter if Rovanpera wins the rally.
(back to the reason my calculator was mentioned)
Burns has a 1'50" cushion going into the last day. Did I realy need the calculator? Prolly not.
The eighth and final leg of the opening stage of the Rally of Great Britain
went the way of Harri Rovanpera as the Peugeot driver put in a late charge to move
up into third place on the leaderboard. Partially due to his stage win, and
partially due to the fact that Didier Auriol lost over a minute and a half in the

SHEEP!!!!!
I can't help but notice that most of the people on this site are chearing for Burns, and of those that are I don't think I've seen any that do it for HIM and most don't even try and hide the fact that there only doing so cause of the car he drive's. And some of the ones that aren't chearing for him clearly say they would be if he wasn't leaveing Subaru, so to me there just as bad.
Favoring a manufacture to get the manufacture's champ. is one thing but someone that chears for a guy for the car he drives sounds too much like a NASCAR fan to me!
I realize each drivers got his problems. If Mcrae hadn't tried too hard I'm sure he would have won, thats his prob. he has a hard time backing it down a notch when he needs to.
But Burns's prob is that BIG lump 3 feet above his ass! Some friends of mine and I were watching some rally vid.s the other day and you'll never guess what your beloved Subie hero said:
"This is the best I can do with this car and these tires." (in a tone of voice that implies HE is GOD and his WRC Subaru is not worthy of him!) don't forget this is the guy you love cause he has a Subie!!
Don't get me wrong! I love Subarus and hate fords but that has nothing to do with who I like as a "driver" (esp. since none of the drivers stay with one manuf. for more than a few years)!
Feel free to flame away at me (as I'm sure you will:monkey: ) I have no frear of sheep.

By the same token, McRae was interviewed on TV a couple o' rallies ago and when asked how come he was doing so badly, he said 'The car is slow, plain and simple it is slow.' Of course people are going to want Burns to win, because if he didn't, Subaru wouldn't win. If you cant follow your manufacterers drivers why bother, next year Tommi will be even MORE popular in this camp because he will be driving a Subaru.

Hmm...
Quote from me:
" Go Burns"
"Go Subaru"
Personally, I have been cheering for Burns, the driver, ever since he came back to Subaru. But yes, you are partially right because while I hope Richard wins the title for himself, I am especially excited because he is indeed driving one of our cars(as in brand name), and the glory, and eventually, money that will come to Subaru from Burns winning the title in their car will be well deserved.
That is Burn's job, that's what he gets paid to do at the moment...win for Subaru.
So yes, you are damn right I will be cheering for Burns because he is driving a Subaru. For the last three years, he was "our" driver and yes I would be happy for him(as a person) if he wins the championship, but mostly I'll be happy for him because he did it in a Subaru. Will I hate him and call him names next year, hell no, but I won't be cheering for him to win either.
I am a 100 percent devoted Subaruist. I rooted for Ari and Colin in the Legacy days back in the early 90's, just as I will root for Tommi and Petter next year.
Just to touch on some things you said:
Favoring a manufacture to get the manufacture's champ. is one thing but someone that chears for a guy for the car he drives sounds too much like a NASCAR fan to me!
That sounds like the exact opposite of nascar fans I know. Most I know are driver-loyal and could care less what he drives.
I realize each drivers got his problems. If Mcrae hadn't tried too hard I'm sure he would have won, thats his prob. he has a hard time backing it down a notch when he needs to.
Not for nothing, but McRae hasn't exactly been doing superb at the last few RAC's. Richard has and excellent track record at the RAC and not because of luck. Not sure what makes you think McRae "would have won"?
Some friends of mine and I were watching some rally vid.s the other day and you'll never guess what your beloved Subie hero said:
 You better watch some more videos. There aren't too many drivers that don't publicly speak in a negative manner towards their team or their car once in a while. Hell, after having trouble on the RAC in 97 or 98, McRae said " I've been telling these people( Prodrive) about this car's windscreen fogging up for the last five years, yet nothing ever gets done about it", not to mention some of Tommi's early comments about the EVO WRC aren't exactly going to help sell EVO VII's for Mitsubishi. And besides that, maybe at that particular time, Burns was better then the car and his tires allowed him to be. Who knows. Some drivers( like Carlos) just have a better way of dealing with their frustration, no big deal.
Please don't think this is a flame towards you, just giving you a point of veiw from a loyal Subaru fan. I liked Jerry Stackhouse and Rasheed Wallace when the played for North Carolina(because I've been a NC fan for as long as I can remember), but I don't exactly root for their teams that they are now with in the NBA.
What I do dispise are fair-weather fans, and there are many of them here. There are some people who only posted to this forum like two times all year, when Burns won in NZ and now that he has a good shot at winning in the UK. How funny is that. When everyone was bitching about him crashing is Sweden saying he was no good and the new WRC Impreza sucks and they should have kept the old car, I was one of the very few pointing out that he and his car( the one that sucked so bad) set more "fastest times" the remaining of the rally and would have easily won if it weren't for his early off. Not too many people here look at the whole picture when it comes to the WRC. They see the finnishing order somewhere and suddenly become and expert on the sport.
I will ALWAYS support Subaru, STi, Prodrive, and their sponsors, teams, and drivers, no matter who it will be, because I am devoted to Subaru. I like just about all the drivers and all the cars in the WRC, and I absolutely love the sport of rallying as a whole, but Subaru will always get my cheers.

I like just about all the drivers and all the cars in the WRC, and I absolutely love the sport of rallying as a whole, but Subaru will always get my cheers.

cool!
First off I'd like to apoligize to any TRUE fans of the sport (as Shik obviously is one) that I may or may not have offended.
I guess I just got a little out of hand because it just seems like there are alot more sheep flocking to something cause its the new "cool thing to do!" and less "true fans" of a kick ass sport.
And no worries! I don't take your reply as a "flame", rather like GOOD constructive criticisem (sp? OMG!).
You have made many valid points.
some of Tommi's early comments about the EVO WRC aren't exactly going to help sell EVO VII's for Mitsubishi.
 I love that one! I think Tommi has valid complaints. He was doing alot better with the old car. I'm no expert on the Evo (or the Impreza for that matter) but I think they messed something up on the new one. Inside I was kinda hopeing Tommi would have a real good rally and win this cause I kinda figured this would happen to Colin. And I can't wait for next season. I think Tommi and Subaru will make a good combo.
And I know most others complain too, but I think Burns does more than most.

My guess is this thread is for the rally at hand, not for lengthy discussions on the past attitudes and quotes from drivers. If you don't like a certain driver keep it short and to the point, then move on to discuss the 2001 Great Britain Rally.

car trouble
A major scare this morning as Burns's car was unable to start under it's own power and had to be push started! If that doesn't mess with your head, I don't know what would.
The title is surely not wrapped up yet, as demonstrated. Burns has the task of driving fast enough to stay where he needs to stay, yet slow enough as to not take any risks, which as many drivers say, is sometimes harder then driving flat out. All the while hoping the car performs as it should for the next two days.
And how about Sainz! Things may be a bit different if he didn't have problems yesterday morning. He currently lies in 4th(although quite a ways back there).
And BTW, I apologize for the novel-like post earlier that really did have nothing to do with the rally. If anymore comments are made pertaining to it, I will gladly erase everything in it(deleting it would delete all posts after it as well I believe). If someone wants to say something about it, they are welcome to drop me an e-mail(which I should have done in the first place) to discuss it. Sorry fellas. On with the rally!!!

HYDCSX - Relax a little bit bud, you'll live longer. I own a Subaru, I don't own Richard Burns, but people can cheer for whoever the Hell they want to.
Burns took second on SS10. He's now 01:09.6 back, only 00:17.7 ahead of the charging Rovenpara. He's being caught pretty quickly and will likely lost second soon. Sainz had some problems, but is currently fourth overall.

Rally Stopped!
SS11 has been halted because of an accident involving Carlos Sainz.
From Autosport: "Carlos Sainz has hit some spectators in an accident on SS11 of the Network Q Rally of Great Britain, causing the stage to be stopped.
The Spaniard, who is running fourth in the event, ran off the road 13kms into the Brechfa stage. It appears a spectator has been injured, but as yet, there are no details of the incident"
A major scare this morning as Burns's car was unable to start under it's own power and had to be push started!
No, it was push started. He and Reid had to push it into service. They changed the spark plugs because they were wet. The car started up fine after that. Either way, I bet that whole crew had their chests in their throat. That's nerve-racking.
Hopefully everything is all right with that Sainz accident. But because of that, Burns can be in fourth place and not have to worry about losing.
This is Burns' ideal event. He loves the fog, he's won here 3 times, consectively! You don't get that with luck. He's trying to get that 4th consective victory. If it's too risky, too unatainable, he might not try so hard or even get team orders to take it easy. Either way, you don't get a Driver's Championship because you suck. The Subaru's this year have had poor reliabilty. If it wasn't for all the mechanical problems, Subaru would be going for Manufacturer's Championsip. Then again, so would most of the teams too. :D
Like most sports this is a team sport. The drivers rely on the co-drivers, the service techs, and so on. If Burns wins the Driver's Championship he won so because he was a better driver than anyone else this year. Not only does that effect him, but the team as well, Subaru.
Ok, I'll stop ranting. Just had to say that real quick.

SS 12 Cancelled! :(
| MstrDC | 11-24-2001 10:50 AM |
Here's a little bit of information about that accident. It seems that it might be very serious.
We have received a report from the Network Q Rally of Great Britain rally office that there has been an incident in Special Stage 11 (Brechfa 2) involving Car No. 3 (Carlos Sainz/Luis Moya). The Stage was immediately stopped and cancelled.
The Medical Officer in attendance advises that there are 15 casualties involved. All medical facilities on the Stage and two Air Ambulances were deployed immediately.
Special Stage 12 (Trawscoed) has been cancelled and all cars are returning to the Service Area at Felindre.
Ford Motor Company have withdrawn Sainz and Moya from the Rally, due to the serious nature of the incident.

Ford withdraws Sainz, Higgins
Ford has withdrawn both Carlos Sainz and Mark Higgins from the Network Q Rally GB following the accident on SS11, Brechfa 2, when Sainz slid off the road and into the crowd.
13 people were taken to hospital in Carmarthen but nine are expected to be released quickly.
In a statement issued at Rally HQ in Cardiff just before 7pm, the organisers confirmed that there are four people needing further treatment; two children aged 12 and 14 with lower limb injuries and two adults with head and back injuries respectively.
An obviously still shocked Sainz said this evening: "There was a crest that was our braking area but the road was so slippery that we couldn't stop the car. We slid into a car and some people, spectators or marshals, and we knew immediately that there were injuries.
"We reported what had happened to the team and the past four hours have not been very nice but I am happier to hear that the injuries are not as serious as we thought. Even so I am very sorry about what has happened."
European Director of Ford Racing, Martin Whitaker, added: "We are genuinely upset that spectators were injured in an accident involving one of our cars and, as a result, we have decided to withdraw from the event. We are keen to work with the authorities to understand what happened and why it happened."
Police have issued a contact number for anyone with family or friends visiting the event and who may be concerned. The number is 01267 232000.

Forgive my ignorance, but how many stanges are there tomorrow. I can't seem to find the info easily.
If I recall, the reason Group B was lost, besides the incredible cost, was the concern about spectators being hurt or killed. I wonder if it's time to create some rules about where spectators can or can't be.

there are such rules and they work pretty well most of the time but lets face it, ***** happens sometimes when you have cars traveling at high speeds on wet gravel and nothing inbetween you and them. that's one of the exciting parts about spectating a rally. you know the risks going into it. and its much, much better than the Gr. B days. there you had people on the road, steping in front of the cars to take pictures  now everyone is kept back from the road a bit and accidents are much less common. oh, and Gr. B was eliminated because the cars were too fast for the drivers. the corners came too quick and it was impossible for the drivers physically to stay on top of things.

Agreed
I agree with 10th Warrior, sometimes things just happen. When you look at it as a whole though, I think the WRC has been pretty darn safe for both drivers and spectators. This was just an unfortunate case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Best wishes to those who were involved.
Anyways, how about these standings...Both Hyundai's in the points and two Skoda's in the top eight :) Granted, they got a bit of help from some of the retiree's, but it's still nice to see them up there. Especially since Kenneth Eriksson is one of the WRC's more likeable drivers, IMHO.

LATEST: Injured spectators go home
Nine of the 13 spectators injured when Carlos Sainz's Ford Focus WRC left the road on Saturday's Brechfa 2 stage have been released from hospital - but a 13-year-old girl will undergo surgery on a leg injury later today (Sunday).
Two casualties, a 12-year-old boy with severe bruising and an adult who suffered head injuries, will leave hospital later today. Meanwhile, the 13-year-old girl is to undergo an operation for a lower leg injury and an adult with back injuries will stay in hospital for another night.
Following yesterday's events, a further statement from the event's organisers was issued saying: "The Network Q Rally of Great Britain employs stringent safety procedures, including the use of three spectator control and safety cars who go through each stage in advance of the competition cars.
"Every stage is also inspected by the FIA Safety Delegate, who has the power to recommend the cancellation of a stage if not satisfied with the safety standards. Additional spectator safety scrutiny is conducted by the MSA's own Health and Safety Executive and the Spectator and Event Safety Manuals run to over 200 pages."
Ford subsequently withdrew Sainz and its other remaining car driven by Mark Higgins from the event. SS11, Brechfa 2 and SS12, Trawscoed, were cancelled, but Saturday night's Cardiff superspecial ran as scheduled.
The Motor Sports Association has already launched an investigation into the accident and says that any recommendations made will be implemented for next year's event.
