For the guys that went last year and drove:
How much did you end up paying? Where did you stay? Total cost at the end for 3 days?
(I want to drive from Inland Empire area of Southern California, but I don't know where to go/stay)

A lot, we stayed at the Fiesta Americana for 5 days.
Stay at the Holiday Inn in Leon. Much cheaper and just as good.
Don't know.
Get a skid plate if you are driving, if you can for the whole bottom side of the car. Ply wood works fine if not close to the heat.
Morpho, I am not going this year due to brother wedding is March 10th, so you don't have to deal with me next year.

It's still near a lot of the stages, and it's where the starting ceremony is. Besides, at the end of the day, where would you rather be?
And, what in Mexico is "fancy pants?"

As a competitor, there's really no choice - you have to stay in Leon. As a spectator, I would definitely stay in Guanajuato! In fact, I'd like to go there on a non-rally weekend just to hang out.

www.rallymexico.com My advice, yes Guanajuato is a bit more posh than Leon but being that the Poliforum is in Leon which acts as Rally HQ for the event I would recomend staying in Leon. There are plenty of hotels in Leon that are walking distance from the Poliforum and so after a day on the stages you can check out all the teams coming back and not to mention have a Corona with the Corona girls. My Dad and I have been staying at the Hotel San Francisco for the past two years and have left with nothing but positive things to say about the hotel. It's about a half mile from the Poliforum, most of the teams have already reserved the majority of the rooms in the Hotels closest to Rally HQ. The first year we went we were supposed to stay at the Howard Johnson only to find that they gave our room to some one from the Citroen Rally Team. Also if you can't rent a car there is a bus service that will take you from the Poliforum to one of that days stages. All in all to anyone considering going to this rally for the first time all I can say is go, you will not be disapointed.

Yes, we need to seriously plan something.
What are the dates of the rally again?
For people who went last year: Is it suggested that a younger white male drive around with a young female in Mexico...? I've never really been.
If anyone else is seriously interested, PM me so we can try to set something up.

Yeah, it's fine, you won't have any problems. It'd be helpful if one of you speaks enough Spanish to buy a sandwich and a tank of gas, however.

Alright, plans are being put together as we speak.
Does anyone else here want to share a room with myself and two others? Maybe cut some costs?
bjorn240 and Tarmacspec06 and anyone else that's been to Rally Mexico please chime in:
Is it recommended to drive your own car there?
Is a rental car and/or taking a bus really neccessary if you drive there (Tarmacspec06)?
Do you need a passport?
Hotel San Fransisco, the Howard Johnson, any other hotels close to the stages which are recommended?
The Friday stages are in Guanajuato. Saturday in Silao (30 min. from Leon). And Sunday in Leon. So I'm assuming Leon would be the best area to stay.
Thanks for the help/advice!

Driving there would be your own personal choice.
The roads to the stages are rough and very dirty, so using your own car is subject to how much you care for it.
Taking the bus limits your freedom. Rental cars are pretty expensive
Yes, you need a passport, it just became law
Hotels are not close to the stages, they are close to the headquarters. I don't recall any of the stages being more than an hour or so drive. some are less than 30 minutes away
Is a rental car and/or taking a bus really neccessary if you drive there?
No. In that case, you're better off driving your own car to the stages. It'll get dusty of course, but then, it's a rally.

Yes.

The Real de Minas Poliforum is right across the street from the Poliforum and is pretty good. It's where Ford WRT stayed last year. The rooms are just a bit dingy but the restaurant/pool area and gym make up for it. Superconvenient to the service park, to be sure.
But be aware, Leon is a large industrial city, like Cleveland, whereas Guanajuato is a really cool old colonial town. If you want to experience Mexico, the latter might be better. If you're just going to meet as many rally drivers as possible, Leon is preferable.

It should be noted, that there is an old town section of Leon that is really fabulous and in the flavor of Guanajuato, and it is only about 3/4 of a mile away from the headquarters. There is some nice hotels there too.
I had an extra day in Leon last year and only just discovered this after going to the rally 4 times. It was right under my nose.
Also the back streets of Leather district, which is across the street from the Poliforum, is very cool too

I gotta go get that passport now...
I hate long drives too, but I don't think it would take more than 4 hours from southern California.
Are the maps from the HQ to the stages on the RallyMexico.com website?
Any other tips or wisdom for a first timer?

**I have done the drive twice and its really not that bad ... just long! Try and stay on the toll roads
** If you fly its wise to get a rental car... Its pretty much the only way to get to the stages
**Hotel San Fan is really nice! I would recommend that hotel vs the others... Restraunt right across the street that alot of wrc team members end up eating + cheap corona buckets
** Stay in Leon if your single and want to have fun .. the local clubs at night are actually pretty fun.... If your married guanjato is probally a more romantic place to chill
btw find a way into the wrc after party .. you wont regret it

I will be flying to leon on friday early in the morning. If any of you have extra room for 2 more to stay that would be great. Also what are u guys doing for transportation down there. I was thinking of renting a car but if anyone has room to ride alond that would be cool too! Otherwise if someone else wants to pitch in on a small car to rent i would be down also. PM or email me and let me know whats up. Dammit im freaking exited!!!!!! Hopefully they will unveil the 2008 impreza WRC also!!

Anyone interested in chipping in on it?

Um, I think you got Rapid_Roo and I [Rallyroo] mixed up. It was I who PM'd you. People always get us confused. Guess it doesn't help that we're in the same region and we post in the same threads.
Go Team RRRR!
