Nice location as long as you are moving along. Another member placed theirs in a similar spot and had high readings. They theorized that engine heat got blown along the side of the car, especially prominent when the engine fans were on.

Aah, Doug, you remembered. I ended up stringing it straight through the engine compartment and attaching it with double sided foam tape to the front (facing out) of the black mesh grill. I have gotten very accurate reading even at slow speeds, BUT, I AM concerned when the front grill becomes covered in snow.

Hey, how are you? My thermometer is doing just fine ;)
I doubt the snow will be there long. At least you know it is below freezing outside when that happens.

OK, so I just read through pages 1-3 and 8...
What is the outcome of these units? Primarily I'm interested in the clock feature that doesnt look like the 80's VCR fatally stuck on 12:00. My stock clock unit burned up, and the gaping hole needs some attention. Thermometer would only make things better for me. Radio Shack isnt carrying the clock/thermo unit anymore?
Its almost 5:30am...and I should be in bed. Just curious if anyone has any recent info on this part.
TIA
Erik

Just bought myself a similiar product, from local Asian car accessories store

it has voltmeter, voltage-low alert(below 11.5V), out/inside temp, icy road alert (???, must be based on outside temp.)
Where would be the best placement of the outside temp sensors from your experience? in its instruction you should put it on the driver side door well, below the metal lock.

The features on the one you just bought are the same as on the Radioshack. It appears very similar size-wise too, but appears to have the cigarette lighter adapter hardwired in and the temp sensor is different too (yours looks beafier). Most people have found the best location to place the sensor is in front of and below the level of the radiator to get a good outside temp and avoid false readings of engine heat being blown down the sides and under the car. The Radioshack unit blinks the red LED and beeps as well when the outside temp is below 39 degrees F (snow and ice or not). This feature can be turned off if you wish. The beeping is real annoying so I simply modified mine by disconnecting the beeper unit from the internal PC board. Now I just get a blinking red LED.

My local Radio Shack managed to find a spare one of these for me and will be getting it shipped to them this week. I should be able to offer it up to a lucky NASIOC member who can't find one locally since they are a discontinued item. I'll post again later this week when I have it in my hand.

If you're asking me, it's stock, from a Legacy. Got it from the dealer. Without modifying it you'll have to install it upside down (door flips down instead of up), but I thought it looked better that way and it works just as well. Really cleaned up the interior.
I believe they come in black as well.

I put my sensor under the fog light hole on my 05, i dont have fog lights, so little heat there...i have the radio shack one, and the only time i notice big differences is when i'm sitting somewhere on a hot day, or when i'm driving through snow...one thing that i dont like is that the ice allert is at 40, this doesn't seem to help much, oh well i guess i'm back to the "when it slides it's icy test"

I installed the radio shack unit. It was a P.O.S. It lost time every other day. The temp part was only accurate when you first get in the car. The only good feature was the voltage gage. I.M.O.

They stopped making them over 6 months ago.
The only thing I can suggest is to search the internet for another brand. I found some a few months ago. They were pretty close to the ones that people were using on here.
Good luck.

Yes, your dead clock is likely due to a broken solder joint, not a wiring problem in your car. You can fix the OEM clock too, BTW. Do a search.

My batteries lasted over a year. Yeah I have to remove it every 6 months to change the hour back and forth, but the 5 minutes is worth it.
There is a connection write-up towards the beginning if this thread that tells you the wiring from the original clock harness.
BTW, my clock is good to with in 2 minutes every 6 months and my temo is within 1 degree of the news radio weather. I threaded mine through the fire wall and taped it to the front of the grill

bringing this thread up from the dead.
I had been looking for something to replace the dash clock. Was about to re-solder the old one. I currently have a generic temp gauge on the wrx anyway, mounted on top of the dash at the bottom of the A pillar.
I wasn't happy to see the radio shack one discontinued.....but through the wonder of the net, I found this one
Includes voltage monitoring from 11.0V to 16.0V with thermometer, ice alert, clock, stop watch and lap counter. Runs off 12V bike power and is lighted. Also has remote sensor for temperature. Attaches with Velcro. Size is 5-1/2" L x 1" H x 3/4" D.
Its a motorcycle accessory but it runs on 12v, so I don't see a problem. Ordered two, one for the wrx and one for the 2.5rs. Not sure where I'll put it on the RS yet.
I'm somewhat intrigued by the stopwatch and lap counter. Don't know if that would be practical in a lapping session or not, but it won't hurt to see what it can do.
I like that it has the voltmeter as well as the clock and thermometer.

My intent is to put the one in the wrx in the clock pod, but I might change my mind depending on where the buttons are on the unit.
Not sure where I'm going to put it on my 00 2.5rs, yet. Might put it on the dash at the bottom of the A-pillar, might attached it to the center storage unit somehow. Somewhat depends on the size.
I think it might be too wide to try to put it next to the cup holder on the wrx, but we'll see.

| sachilles | 12-13-2007 10:29 AM |
OK, I just received the unit yesterday via UPS. Took them a while to process the order. The unit looks nice.
Has a 3 wire hookup. 1-ground, 2 -to constant 12v, 3-to switched 12v. NO batteries to change. My gripe is that the three wires are suppose to be black, red and orange. However the wires are actually 2 red wires, and one black. Its easy enough to figure out. Connect you black wire to the ground. Try one red wire...if it lights the backlight then that is the switched source wire. If it lights the led's then its the constant source wire.
So now I need to figure out how to mount it.
The back of the unit, has the buttons for setting the hours/minutes. It also has the switches for C/F and 24 hour time/12 hour time.
The top of the unit has a switch for the freeze alert settings Led+alarm/LED only/Alert off.
The right side of the unit has a switch for displaying either the interior temp, or outside temp.
The Left Side has a switch to go from the clock to the stopwatch.
The face has buttons for the stopwatch functions and peak recall of the temps.
Its wires come out of the bottom of the unit.
It comes with velcro. Its plastic case has recessed boxes on the back to put the velcro, so that that the unit will stick flush to something if you use the velcro option.
I'm going to take this thing apart to see if I might be able to relocate the switches from the side.
Probably won't get to it until after the holidays.

I had some down time at work, so I brought in the clock pod to see how things would fit.
I'm flip flopping as to what I want to do.
I may just re-solder the clock and put this unit elsewhere. Maybe near the cup holder or to the left of it. To use the stopwatch in any meaningful way, it will need to be closer than where the clock pod sits.
Also to reach the side buttons, it would be important. However, I have the clock fixed...the need for a clock isn't there...so it could be on stopwatch 100% of the time. I'd leave it on outside temp all the time.
My other thought was to put it in front of the clock in the clock pod. Making some cuts in the pod so that it could snap in there. There is some curvature in the pod that would allow it to get in there. The gaps on the side would allow for some one to work the switches on the side. However, I'm not convinced I could cut precisely enough. It would also mean the stopwatch function would not be nearly as useful.
I'm flip flopping as to what I want to do.
I may just re-solder the clock and put this unit elsewhere. Maybe near the cup holder or to the left of it. To use the stopwatch in any meaningful way, it will need to be closer than where the clock pod sits.

Nice find. I like the part about not using its own batteries! I may have to replace my Radio Shack one with this because I'm sick of those batteries dieing or just not working when its cold and then the clock resetting to 12.
Good find! I've had this thread bookmarked for ever hoping to do this mod.
Now that I'm selling my car, I find that I don't have the harness for my stock clock. Thinking I might as well try a clock/thermomenter mod for the new owner. Will likely cost as much as purchasing a new clock plug/harness.
It is too bad the original Radio Shack car thermometer was discontinued. That part looked like it could be made to fit quite easily. Ah well, ironic that I've found the exact same car thermometer you've linked. I'm very curious to know if it can be made to fit. Will order up one myself and try it out if the word is good.
Subscribed!
PS - If I'm able to make this mod work, I'll have a stock clock for sale.... been in storage for 4 years (replaced the stock clock soon after I purchased my WRX... with this.) : P

One thing I have found so far is that the unit is sensitive to the angle you mount it at. You need to be looking at the display at eye level or above, otherwise, the display is hard to view. Not sure why either.
Shouldn't be an issue, with most mounting spots. However if you planned on mounting above the rear view mirror or something, it wouldn't be a good idea unless you angled it down quite a bit.
In other words. If the display is at 0, your eyes should not be beyond 90.
Right now I'm thinking about mounting below the ash tray. The downside being that if anything is plugged into the cigarette lighter plug, it will obscure the time.
The unit is too big to fit in the spot people are putting the turbo timers. However, it looks to be the exact size that would fit in the cup holder spot above the radio.

OK, yesterday I started the install. I have it in and working(sort of). I installed in the space of the cupholder. Being a fool, rather using the wires from the clock for connecting the gauge I used the hazard light switch. They seemed to test fine with my electrical tester. What I failed to realize is the ground I used, grounded through the blinker mechanism.. So if I turn on the hazards or the left blinker, it interrupts the ground reseting the device. :sadbanana:.
I'm going to just hook it up to the clock wiring.
In order for it to fit in the space for the cupholder, you obviously need to remove the cupholder which has two screws holding it in place.
I'd suggest removing the clock pod. Once the cupholder is out. Pull of the piece with vents and hazard switch. It uses the cupholder screws to keep it in place on the passenger side, the other side is clipped into place, and that needs to be gently pried out. To make that easier(you'll have to do this anyway) remove the face plate that surrounds the radio and hvac controls. It is clipped in 4 places. It should pry out easy with a flat blade screw driver.
Both the the vent piece and radio face plate will have to be dremeled(but not in a spot that you can see. So if you don't like how the gauge looks in the spot, you can put it back to stock, and you wouldn't see any of the cuts.
What is important is the need to reuse the screws from the cupholder. You use them to adjust the "depth" of the gauge, otherwise it will not fit flush.
I should have some pics later today

Sounds great, looking foreward to the pics. Question - is the gauge too big to fit into the blank beside the cupholder? Despit its uselessness, I do use my cupholder on rare occasion. I was thinking either spot was great, so I'm glad to see you took the plunge first.

The unit is too big to fit in the space beside the cupholder...sorry. It barely fits in the cupholder spot width wise(requires cutting to make it fit).
I need find a photo host, so I can post up the pics.

Mine was posted in Post #11 of this thread. The unit is still ticking strong on its original batteries (close to three years now) and the outside temp readings are always within one degree of all the tempertaure readings around town. Forget about the inside temp readings during the summer though

Guage pod?

I was wondering if anyone has seen a round style temp guage that would fit inside the OEM triple guage pod that replaces the normal clock. OEM guage pod has the useless oil temp sensor that i want to get rid of...
| Patrick Olsen | 10-12-2009 12:29 AM |
When did oil temp become useless?
And no, I've never seen an external air temperature gauge that would fit a gauge pod.

I guess it's not useless, but there is one on the dash & I'd rather have a clock & inside/outside temp guage than two oil temp guages.

Good to see this thread is still going! Can't believe it's been 4.5 years!
I'll see if I can fix the original pictures and get them back up to help people out with their installs.
For anyone interested, my thermometer worked great until about a week ago when I pulled it out because I broke the wire to the sensor :unamused:
I had actually moved it to under the radio for a while, as I recently installed a center 3 gauge pod.
The Radio Shack thermometer I used fit perfectly into one of these little OEM Forester DIN thingies.

So the thermometer was completely hidden when the door was closed.
I just drilled a hole in the back to run the sensor through. I can take pictures if anyone wants them.
Now that I broke that thermometer though I need to figure something new out. I will post it in this thread if I do anything cool.

Just stumbled accross this thread. Seems like a really cool idea. I searched around for a good quality thermometer and voltmeter, maybe even a digital compass built in there too but couldn't find anything that wasn't some cheap chinese POS or that would fit in the clock pod. Anyone have any suggestions?
