I did this mod a couple of weeks ago and now for some reason my battery keeps on dying and leaving me stranded.....The way i wired it was the "hot line" (wire with white stripe on it) to the #4 wire (yellow/red wire) accessory and other ground wire to #2 (ground). Now when i leave my car overnight it has just enough juice to start up and then when i get to my destination (only a couple of miles away, not enough time for the alternator to charge the bat up) im left stranded. I dont think its my alt b/c when the car is running the voltmeter reads 12.4V (iirc) and the battery icon is full. THe only other thing i can think of is that my battery is going, but i just replaced it last winter (with a non oem spec)! ANy help?
I'd recommend taking the AAA batteries out from the back of the temp. unit, and just not use the clock feature on the thermometer.

Its possible you could have switched the harness around on accident, because the bottom most lead is the accessory, but the top most one is the constant power source. You could be creating a closed loop that is draining your battery.
My only suggestion is to unplug the thermo unit and run a few days without it to be sure its not the thermo unit thats causing your battery to drain.
Ive had mine plugged in since i installed it, and my car still starts just fine. I leave mine on exterior temp and voltage since i dont really need the time. But i do leave the batteries in it so the car doesnt have to be on to see the exterior temp. So far temp has been fairly accurate, onyl fluctuating slightly +/- .3 degrees which is well within the acceptable operating function spec'd in the instruction sheet.

anyone have the problem where the thermo unit just resets itself? mine just rests every now and then! its a pain in the ass taking it off and adjusting the time and i dont want to resort to drilling holes so i could adjust witout taking it apart

so i know someone already warned me about this, but i was taking out the rubber plug, and accidentally pushed it into the engine bay somewhere. where is it? i can't find where it goes anywhere. and i also need to know where that hole is for when i feed the temp probe through.

Great mod!
I just stopped by my local Rat Shack and picked up 2 of them (I plan on ripping one apart and swapping out the light with some Red or Blue LEDs to match my dash or CD player)
I have my CD player up in the location of the factory clock so I was thinking about placing it down under the ash tray instead.
as for the probe, has anyone found a really good location for it yet? I have a replica STi grill with no emblem so that location is out.
Thanks again for the great idea!

i fed mine up to just next to where the driver side wiper is. it is an excelent place, sheltered under the top corner of the hood. does anyone know if the temp sensor can get wet?

Good idea... I may steal that... thanks.
And yes the external temp sensor is water proof... at least that is what the instructions claim.

I fed mine to the driver's side mirror and placed it on the side of the mirror base (the black part). It's been raining and snowing here and no problems with the temp readings.
| Rick Schu | 03-29-2005 08:38 PM |
I put my temp sensor behind the oval "i" badge, because this is close to where the factory temp sensor sits. But after driving and parking, it gets major heat soak and gives way high readings. I need to move it somewhere out of the engine bay but not in direct sunlight.
The sensor is apparently weatherproof, according to the manual.

mine reads high after sitting as well, but after a few min of driving it's fine
| MB38 | 03-29-2005 10:23 PM |
It probably reads high from the heat of your engine venting out the front of the grille.
I wish I could do this with my car. I've already taken up the space with my iPod mount, so no dice. I've been considering moving it to the retractible cupholder, however.

i ran my sensor up through the hood scoop. Works great. My biggest misreadings seem to be the internal temp. Other than that, i like the mod.

Different location?

I don't want to have to go through removing my stock clock pod so I just want to mount it above my rear-view mirror, is there still a way to get the power hooked into the system up there somehow? I am already using the auto-dimming mirror so maybe I could tie into that somehow? Also if there isn't how long do the batteries last if I just run it off of them?

I located the sensor behind the fog lamp (in the lower fender area, it sticks upside down to the frame that supports the battery tray).
Paul G.
I don't have any issues with wind or with engine heat while I am moving. If I am stuck in traffic the location seems to pick up the higher heat levels down by the pavement (via exhaust and probably my engine bay).
To access the area I am talking about you can either remove the fog lamp and/or pop out the part of the fenderliner near the bottom of the bumper.

Awesome Mod!!! Just as good as the Mechanical CEL fix! :D Off to Radio Shack I go, now I need to buy a Dremel any suggestions? (I know nothing about Dremels)
Also just curious does anyone know where they mount the temp. sensor on cars that come with one stock??
UPDATE: Another thing I wonder after picking this up is how are you going to be able to update the clock once it's installed in the car? The clock adjustment is on top of the unit and seems that once it's installed you won't be able to adjust it.
Thanks for the mod! :disco:

i used L brackets, that i mounted underneath the unit, rather on top, which is where the clock adjustment buttons are located.

Yeah I thought about this idea too because I want to put a gauge pod up where the factory clock is. I haven't measured it yet but I bet it will fit below the ashtray, looks to be perfect . Then I figure you'll still be able to adjust the clock without having to take it back out. Also I am not a smoker (and I don't use the ashtray) so I plan to use the wiring from the ashtray light to wire up this device. :D I'll post some pics when I get this in.

I finally got it all set up just perfect yesterday...with double stick tape and duck tape. Got it perfectly straight.
I decided to install the outside temp sensor inside the right fender, since there is where the car breathes.. I just wanted to know how hot it really is in there. (It gets pretty hot in Miami's traffic.) So I call it my "air intake temp meter" and my inside one my "dash board temp meter".
It looks very nice and very stock. The green ligth is just perfectly dim and yet you can read it.
I don't know if I can get used to the constant green battery light. I think I'm going to have to cover it or dim it somehow.
I also got the batteries so I didn't have worry about the time, you know, now that it is just right.
My wife couldn't understand why I got so mad when she reminded me this morning to "move forward one hour" all the clocks in the house. :furious:
I missed the memo. :p

I stuck the sensor right to the underside of the front emblem. It is very accurate,.. when I drive by the temp displays at like banks and stuff, it is always within a couple degrees.
I just wish there was a way to get all of the heat out from under the dash, because the temp under there often gets in excess of 110F, and sometimes the tape adhesive gets week and causes the unit to sag.

That is my ONLY beef with this mod. I'm trying to figure out a way to block the heat with something lightweight, and heat absorbent. Something to shield the interior temp sensor. I'm open to suggestions.

When I did the installation I followed the instructions that were listed to put the black w/ white stripe into the #4 accessory spot and the ground to the #2 ground spot. Problem was, the unit stayed on with the key out of the ignition. I saw that this could possibly drain my battery so I switched the black w/ white stripe wire to the #1 batt spot and everything seems to work as it should... the thing is off when the key is out or off.
I also noticed a problem with setting the clock. I used JB Kwick to put the thing in place... damn. So I got to thinking and I remembered an old indian trick...that I could reset the clock by pulling my neg of the battery and putting it back on at either 12:00 AM or 12:00 PM. Heh! I also would be resetting my Ecutek in the process.

If I used the #1 "battery" port for my hot wire, the display would light up when the headlights were OFF, and it would not light up with the headlights ON, and it drained the battery. Kinda counter productive. ***!
Any suggestions?
I know- look at the plug from the right perspective and the original instructions will work! Derr. Black/White - #4 ACC and Black - #2 GND. Works like a charm.

Hey Guys.
I just did this mod last night. If you take apart the stock clock harness, you will see four wires - battery (always on), ground (black), light (pink with a blue stripe I think) and accessory.
You want to put a battery in your clock, then hook the clock/thermometer to the ground and the pink wire with the blue stripe labeled (LIGHT) in the factory clock harness. Just tape up the others, they aren't needed. If you wire this correctly, the clock/thermometer will light up only when the headlights are on (just like OEM). It won't drain your battery because there is no power to the unit when the headlights are off. The clock and thermometer will still work however, because it uses the internal battery. Don't use accessory or battery wires.
I tested all the wires in the clock harness using a voltmeter to deduce this, but if you look at the back of your factory clock, you will see labels for each wire.
I still need to run the temp sensor to somewhere outside the cabin - didn't quite get there yet. And I will probably need to get some real double sided tape or velcro to mount the thing better (I just taped it in).
Oh yeah, FYI - make sure you disconnect teh battery before messing with the wiring (don't want to blow a fuse like I did -- duh).
I'll try to get some pics up when I'm done. It's a great mod for ten bucks...

I used 2, two inch "L" brackets, which holds the unit in place, firmly against the pod. I did have to bend the brackets slightly, to get the right angle. Then, i used outdoor, extra strength double sided 3M tape (got at home depot, designed to mount exterior items on your house, building, etc.)
Secured the "L" brackets using the double sided tape. Did this last week, and the unit has not moved a centimeter. All in all i spent 8 bucks at home depot, and problem solved.
I was having the EXACT same problem as you, when i would get in the car after a couple hours of sitting, and the unit was completely disconnected from the pod. Sinse i beefed it up a little, i havent a had a single problem.
I can send you pics if you still are having problems.
Hope this helps!

A question:
What are the dimensions of the thing? (Trying to think about other mounting possibilities before purchasing.)
An idea:
Some people have noted the annoyance of heat soak on the temperature reading. How about turning this annoyance into a benefit - mount the temperature sensor right on the intercooler. Now you have a "heat soak" meter!

so basically, i used double sided, super super strong tape, and attached the "l" brackets. Then i secured it with two additional strips on tape (red backing). I only used one side of this tape, so i left the red backing.
hope this clarifies things a lil.
peace.

npreston, i don't understand how the metal brackets are really holding anything together. it seems like you use the double sided tape to stick the thermometer to the plastic trim, then use the other side to stick the metal brackets to the tape. i don't see how the metal is providing additional support. how are the brackets being attached to the trim?

I do like this color better but doesn't come with voltmeter. Do anyone know how to connect the clock with a thermometer so it turns off when key out and keeps the memory for the previous setting. I didn't replace the OEM clock with it, I kept the clock and instead I mounted under the ash tray area. I like the thermometer and voltmeter. If I insert the AAA battery and connected the power to key on will it keep the memory of my setting when key off?

I understand what youre saying. The brackets are not permently atteched to the pod, so, if i need to access the hr/min. function to change the clock, it would be very simple to de-attach. I guess the tape is probably doing most of the work, in terms of holding the thermometer to the interior of the pod. I would estimate that the brackets provide stability, and keep the thermometer from shifting either vertically, or horizontially. If you have better luck without using the brackets, then right on. This is the best that i could come up with, being in home depot with less than 10 bucks in my pocket. Like i said, it hasn't moved a centimeter from the day i beefed up the support. Before that, the thermometer would not stay in place for longer than 15 minutes, esp. on a hot day.
Good luck and god speed.

Does anybody have any solutions for mounting this thing that don't require glue/tape/hot glue gun? I havn't had any luck with using adhesives to hold the thing on, as the dashboard inevitably gets very hot during the day (130 degrees or so) and the adhesive melts and the thing falls off...
Right now I just have it sitting on the dashboard, as I got sick of trying to fix it everyday. :(

i used hot glue after i gave up on tape. trust me, it's not going anywhere!

Yeah, I tried that too. It held fine until the first warm afternoon with the windows up, then it fell...

yeah....i just ate my words when i went out to my car today and saw that the hot glue gave way and it fell again.....any suggestions anyone? maybe a different kind of glue that doesn't get soft when it gets hot?

lets see a pic off your mounted and how did you wire it up

I don't have pics, unless someone can post it for me. I mounted on the tray under the ash tray and lighter. I just used double side tape and inserted 2 AAA battery and connected the power lead to key on.

Where you are guys mounting the senor and how did you get it there? This thermometer is sitting on my desk at home.,..

I installed my on the front bumper next to the lic. plate (unpainted area) I don't know if is because the area I mounted the sensor at but eveytime after work when my car had sit under the sun for 5 hours, it's read 110 degree F, but it's only in the high 70's all day. I guess you get what you paid for, that least the voltmeter works (I hope).

Wow, I got this clock a while back, as a solution to a good basic clock to replace the one I lost with the gauge cluster, but had no idea this cheap solution would appeal to others, or work so elegantly in the clock space....
Since I have the guages, I simply used the enclosed double sided tape and mounted it in the leftmost corner under the windshield. I ran the sensor just outside into the doorjamb near the hinge, which seems to work great, except that when idling, the fan can blow engine heat to that area. Otherwise, very accurate.
I gave up on the cigarette lighter w/ batteries, as it would reset the clock regularly. I lose the voltmeter, but have one on the guage cluster, and can still hit the big button for brief illumination. On batteries alone, it keeps time fine.

After reading the first post I decided this was a mod I definetly had to do. Just ordered two of them from radioshack; my friend and I are going to have an install day with these things and a bottom grille! Good times!
Will post pics when completed.
